욥기 16장

 

Then Job replied: "I have heard many things like these; miserable comforters are you all! Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing? I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you. But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. 욥이 대답하였다. 그런 말은 전부터 많이 들었다. 나를 위로한다고 하지만, 오히려 너희는 하나같이 나를 괴롭힐 뿐이다. 너희는 이런 헛된 소리를 끝도 없이 계속할 테냐? 무엇에 홀려서, 그렇게 말끝마다 나를 괴롭히느냐? 너희가 내 처지가 되면, 나도 너희처럼 말할 수 있을 것이다. 나도 너희에게 마구 말을 퍼부으며, 가엾다는 듯이 머리를 내저을 것이다. 내가 입을 열어 여러 가지 말로 너희를 격려하며, 입에 발린 말로 너희를 위로하였을 것이다.

"Yet if I speak, my pain is not relieved; and if I refrain, it does not go away. Surely, O God, you have worn me out; you have devastated my entire household. You have bound me--and it has become a witness; my gauntness rises up and testifies against me. God assails me and tears me in his anger and gnashes his teeth at me; my opponent fastens on me his piercing eyes. Men open their mouths to jeer at me; they strike my cheek in scorn and unite together against me. 내가 아무리 말을 해도, 이 고통 줄어들지 않습니다. 입을 다물어 보아도 이 아픔이 떠나가지 않습니다. 주님께서 나를 기진맥진하게 하시고, 내가 거느리고 있던 자식들을 죽이셨습니다. 주님께서 나를 체포하시고, 주님께서 내 적이 되셨습니다. 내게 있는 것이라고는, 피골이 상접한 앙상한 모습뿐입니다. 이것이 바로 주님께서 나를 치신 증거입니다. 사람들은 피골이 상접한 내 모습을 보고, 내가 지은 죄로 내가 벌을 받았다고 합니다. 주님께서 내게 분노하시고, 나를 미워하시며, 내게 이를 가시며, 내 원수가 되셔서, 살기 찬 눈초리로 나를 노려보시니, 사람들도 나를 경멸하는구나. 욕하며, 뺨을 치는구나. 모두 한패가 되어 내게 달려드는구나.

God has turned me over to evil men and thrown me into the clutches of the wicked. All was well with me, but he shattered me; he seized me by the neck and crushed me. He has made me his target; his archers surround me. Without pity, he pierces my kidneys and spills my gall on the ground. Again and again he bursts upon me; he rushes at me like a warrior. "I have sewed sackcloth over my skin and buried my brow in the dust. 하나님이 나를 범법자에게 넘겨 버리시며, 나를 악한 자의 손아귀에 내맡기셨다. 나는 평안히 살고 있었는데, 하나님이 나를 으스러뜨리셨다. 내 목덜미를 잡고 내던져서, 나를 부스러뜨리셨다. 그가 나를 세우고 과녁을 삼으시니, 그가 쏜 화살들이 사방에서 나에게 날아든다. 그가 사정없이 내 허리를 뚫으시고, 내 내장을 땅에 쏟아 내신다. 그가 나를 갈기갈기 찢고 또 찢으시려고 용사처럼 내게 달려드신다. 내가 맨살에 베옷을 걸치고 통곡한다. 내 위세를 먼지 속에 묻고, 여기 이렇게 시궁창에 앉아 있다.

My face is red with weeping, deep shadows ring my eyes; yet my hands have been free of violence and my prayer is pure. "O earth, do not cover my blood; may my cry never be laid to rest! Even now my witness is in heaven; my advocate is on high. My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; 하도 울어서, 얼굴마저 핏빛이 되었고, 눈꺼풀에는 죽음의 그림자가 덮여 있다. 그러나 나는 폭행을 저지른 일이 없으며, 내 기도는 언제나 진실하였다. 땅아, 내게 닥쳐온 이 잘못된 일을 숨기지 말아라! 애타게 정의를 찾는 내 부르짖음이 허공에 흩어지게 하지 말아라! 하늘에 내 증인이 계시고, 높은 곳에 내 변호인이 계신다! 내 중재자는 내 친구다. 나는 하나님께 눈물로 호소한다.

on behalf of a man he pleads with God as a man pleads for his friend. only a few years will pass before I go on the journey of no return. 사람이 친구를 위하여 변호하듯이, 그가 하나님께 내 사정을 아뢴다. 이제 몇 해만 더 살면, 나는 돌아오지 못하는 길로 갈 것이다.
