욥기 15장

 

Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied: "Would a wise man answer with empty notions or fill his belly with the hot east wind? Would he argue with useless words, with speeches that have no value? But you even undermine piety and hinder devotion to God. Your sin prompts your mouth; you adopt the tongue of the crafty. 데만 사람 엘리바스가 대답하였다. 지혜롭다는 사람이, 어찌하여 열을 올리며 궤변을 말하느냐? 쓸모 없는 이야기로 논쟁이나 일삼고, 아무 유익도 없는 말로 다투기만 할 셈이냐? 정말 너야말로 하나님을 두려워하는 마음도 내던져 버리고, 하나님 앞에서 뉘우치며 기도하는 일조차도 팽개쳐 버리는구나. 네 죄가 네 입을 부추겨서, 그 혀로 간사한 말만 골라서 하게 한다.

Your own mouth condemns you, not mine; your own lips testify against you. "Are you the first man ever born? Were you brought forth before the hills? Do you listen in on God's council? Do you limit wisdom to yourself? What do you know that we do not know? What insights do you have that we do not have? The gray-haired and the aged are on our side, men even older than your father. 너를 정죄하는 것은 네 입이지, 내가 아니다. 바로 네 입술이 네게 불리하게 증언한다. 네가 맨 처음으로 세상에 태어난 사람이기라도 하며, 산보다 먼저 생겨난 존재라도 되느냐? 네가 하나님의 회의를 엿듣기라도 하였느냐? 어찌하여 너만 지혜가 있다고 주장하느냐? 우리가 알지 못하는 어떤 것을 너 혼자만 알고 있기라도 하며, 우리가 깨닫지 못하는 그 무엇을 너 혼자만 깨닫기라도 하였다는 말이냐? 우리가 사귀는 사람 가운데는, 나이가 많은 이도 있고, 머리가 센 이도 있다. 네 아버지보다 나이가 더 든 이도 있다.

Are God's consolations not enough for you, words spoken gently to you? Why has your heart carried you away, and why do your eyes flash, so that you vent your rage against God and pour out such words from your mouth? "What is man, that he could be pure, or one born of woman, that he could be righteous? If God places no trust in his holy ones, if even the heavens are not pure in his eyes, 하나님이 네게 위로를 베푸시는데도, 네게는 그 위로가 별것 아니란 말이냐? 하나님이 네게 부드럽게 말씀하시는데도, 네게는 그 말씀이 하찮게 들리느냐? 무엇이 너를 그렇게 건방지게 하였으며, 그처럼 눈을 부라리게 하였느냐? 어찌하여 너는 하나님께 격한 심정을 털어놓으며, 하나님께 함부로 입을 놀려 대느냐? 인생이 무엇이기에 깨끗하다고 할 수 있겠으며, 여인에게서 태어난 사람이 무엇이기에 의롭다고 할 수 있겠느냐? 바로 그것이다. 하나님은 당신의 천사들마저도 반드시 신뢰할 수 있다고 여기지는 않으신다. 그분 눈에는 푸른 하늘도 깨끗하게만 보이지는 않는다.

how much less man, who is vile and corrupt, who drinks up evil like water! "Listen to me and I will explain to you; let me tell you what I have seen, what wise men have declared, hiding nothing received from their fathers (to whom alone the land was given when no alien passed among them): All his days the wicked man suffers torment, the ruthless through all the years stored up for him. 하물며 구역질 나도록 부패하여 죄를 물 마시듯 하는 사람이야 어떠하겠느냐? 네게 가르쳐 줄 것이 있으니, 들어 보아라. 내가 배운 지혜를 네게 말해 주겠다. 이것은 내가 지혜로운 사람들에게서 배운 것이고, 지혜로운 사람들도 자기 조상에게서 배운 공개된 지혜다. 그들이 살던 땅은 이방인이 없는 땅이고, 거기에서는 아무도 그들을 곁길로 꾀어 내서 하나님을 떠나게 하지 못하였다. 악한 일만 저지른 자들은 평생 동안 분노 속에서 고통을 받으며, 잔인하게 살아온 자들도 죽는 날까지 같은 형벌을 받는다.

Terrifying sounds fill his ears; when all seems well, marauders attack him. He despairs of escaping the darkness; he is marked for the sword. He wanders about--food for vultures ; he knows the day of darkness is at hand. Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, like a king poised to attack, because he shakes his fist at God and vaunts himself against the Almighty, 들리는 소식이라고는 다 두려운 소식뿐이고, 좀 평안해졌는가 하면 갑자기 파괴하는 자가 들이닥치는 것이다. 그런 사람은, 어디에선가 칼이 목숨을 노리고 있으므로, 흑암에서 벗어나서 도망할 희망마저 가질 수 없다. 날짐승이 그의 주검을 먹으려고 기다리고 있으니, 더 이상 앞날이 없음을 그는 깨닫는다. 재난과 고통이, 공격할 준비가 다 된 왕처럼, 그를 공포 속에 몰아넣고 칠 것이다. 이것은 모두 그가, 하나님께 대항하여 주먹을 휘두르고, 전능하신 분을 우습게 여긴 탓이 아니겠느냐?

defiantly charging against him with a thick, strong shield. "Though his face is covered with fat and his waist bulges with flesh, he will inhabit ruined towns and houses where no one lives, houses crumbling to rubble. He will no longer be rich and his wealth will not endure, nor will his possessions spread over the land. He will not escape the darkness; a flame will wither his shoots, and the breath of God's mouth will carry him away. 전능하신 분께 거만하게 달려들고, 방패를 앞세우고 그분께 덤빈 탓이다. 비록, 얼굴에 기름이 번지르르 흐르고, 잘 먹어서 배가 나왔어도, 그가 사는 성읍이 곧 폐허가 되고, 사는 집도 폐가가 되어서, 끝내 돌무더기가 되고 말 것이다. 그는 더 이상 부자가 될 수 없고, 재산은 오래 가지 못하며, 그림자도 곧 사라지고 말 것이다. 어둠이 엄습하면 피하지 못할 것이며, 마치 가지가 불에 탄 나무와 같을 것이다. 꽃이 바람에 날려 사라진 나무와 같을 것이다.

Let him not deceive himself by trusting what is worthless, for he will get nothing in return. Before his time he will be paid in full, and his branches will not flourish. He will be like a vine stripped of its unripe grapes, like an olive tree shedding its blossoms. For the company of the godless will be barren, and fire will consume the tents of those who love bribes. They conceive trouble and give birth to evil; their womb fashions deceit." 그가 헛것을 의지할 만큼 어리석다면, 악이 그가 받을 보상이 될 것이다. 그런 사람은 때가 되지도 않아, 미리 시들어 버릴 것이며, 마른 나뭇가지처럼 되어, 다시는 움을 틔우지 못할 것이다. 익지도 않은 포도가 마구 떨어지는 포도나무처럼 되고, 꽃이 다 떨어져서 열매를 맺지 못하는 올리브 나무처럼 될 것이다. 하나님을 두려워하지 않는 무리는 이렇게 메마르고, 뇌물로 지은 장막은 불에 탈 것이다. 재난을 잉태하고 죄악만을 낳으니, 그들의 뱃속에는 거짓만 들어 있을 뿐이다.
