느헤미아 13장

 

On that day the Book of Moses was read aloud in the hearing of the people and there it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever be admitted into the assembly of God, because they had not met the Israelites with food and water but had hired Balaam to call a curse down on them. (Our God, however, turned the curse into a blessing.) When the people heard this law, they excluded from Israel all who were of foreign descent. Before this, Eliashib the priest had been put in charge of the storerooms of the house of our God. He was closely associated with Tobiah, and he had provided him with a large room formerly used to store the grain offerings and incense and temple articles, and also the tithes of grain, new wine and oil prescribed for the Levites, singers and gatekeepers, as well as the contributions for the priests. 그 날, 백성에게 모세의 책을 읽어 주었는데, 거기에서 그들은 다음과 같이 적혀 있는 것을 발견하였다. "암몬 사람과 모압 사람은 영원히 하나님의 총회에 참석하지 못한다. 그들은 먹을 것과 마실 것을 가지고 와서 이스라엘 자손을 맞아들이기는커녕, 오히려 발람에게 뇌물을 주어서, 우리가 저주를 받도록 빌게 하였다. 그러나 우리 하나님은 그 저주를 바꾸어 복이 되게 하셨다." 백성은 이 율법의 말씀을 듣고, 섞여서 사는 이방 무리를 이스라엘 가운데서 모두 분리시켰다. 이 일이 있기 전이다. 우리 하나님 성전의 방들을 맡고 있는 엘리아십 제사장은 도비야와 가까이 지내는 사이이다. 그런데 그가 도비야에게 큰 방 하나를 내주었다. 그 방은 처음부터 곡식제물과 유향과 그릇과, 레위 사람들과 노래하는 사람들과 성전 문지기들에게 주려고 십일조로 거두어들인 곡식과 새 포도주와 기름과, 제사장들의 몫으로 바친 제물을 두는 곳이다.

But while all this was going on, I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Some time later I asked his permission and came back to Jerusalem. Here I learned about the evil thing Eliashib had done in providing Tobiah a room in the courts of the house of God. I was greatly displeased and threw all Tobiah's household goods out of the room. I gave orders to purify the rooms, and then I put back into them the equipment of the house of God, with the grain offerings and the incense. I also learned that the portions assigned to the Levites had not been given to them, and that all the Levites and singers responsible for the service had gone back to their own fields. 이 모든 일은, 내가 예루살렘을 비웠을 때에 일어났다. 나는 바빌론 왕 아닥사스다 삼십이년에 왕을 뵈러 갔다가, 얼마가 지나서 왕에게 말미를 얻어, 예루살렘으로 다시 돌아와서야, 엘리아십이 하나님의 성전 뜰 안에 도비야가 살 방을 차려 준 이 악한 일을 알게 되었다. 나는 몹시 화가 나서, 도비야가 쓰는 방의 세간을 다 바깥으로 내던지고, 말하였다. "그 방을 깨끗하게 치운 다음에, 하나님의 성전 그릇들과 곡식제물과 유향을 다시 그리로 들여다 놓아라." 내가 또 알아보니, 레위 사람들은 그 동안에 받을 몫을 받지 못하고 있었다. 그래서 레위 사람들과 노래하는 사람들은 맡은 일을 버리고, 저마다 밭이 있는 곳으로 떠났다.

So I rebuked the officials and asked them, "Why is the house of God neglected?" Then I called them together and stationed them at their posts. All Judah brought the tithes of grain, new wine and oil into the storerooms. I put Shelemiah the priest, Zadok the scribe, and a Levite named Pedaiah in charge of the storerooms and made Hanan son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah, their assistant, because these men were considered trustworthy. They were made responsible for distributing the supplies to their brothers. Remember me for this, O my God, and do not blot out what I have so faithfully done for the house of my God and its services. In those days I saw men in Judah treading winepresses on the Sabbath and bringing in grain and loading it on donkeys, together with wine, grapes, figs and all other kinds of loads. And they were bringing all this into Jerusalem on the Sabbath. Therefore I warned them against selling food on that day. 그래서 나는, 어쩌자고 하나님의 성전을 이렇게 내버려 두었느냐고 관리들을 꾸짖고, 곧 레위 사람들을 불러모아서 다시 일을 맡아 보게 하였다. 그랬더니, 온 유다 사람들이 곡식과 새 포도주와 기름의 십일조를 가지고 와서, 창고에 들여다 놓았다. 나는 셀레먀 제사장과 사독 서기관과 레위 사람 브다야를 창고 책임자로 삼고, 맛다니야의 손자이며 삭굴의 아들인 하난을 버금 책임자로 삼았다. 그들은 모두 정직하다고 인정을 받는 사람들이다. 그들이 맡은 일은, 동료들에게 돌아갈 몫을 골고루 나누어 주는 일이었다. "하나님, 내가 한 일을 기억하여 주십시오. 하나님의 성전을 보살핀 일과, 예배를 드릴 수 있도록 정성껏 한 이 일을 잊지 마십시오." 그 무렵에 유다에서는, 안식일에도 사람들이 술틀을 밟고, 곡식을 가져다가 나귀에 지워서 실어 나르며, 포도주와 포도송이와 무화과 같은 것을 날라들였다. 안식일인데도 사람들이 이런 여러 가지 짐을 지고 예루살렘으로 들어오는 것이 나의 눈에 띄었다. 나는 안식일에는 사고 파는 일을 하지 말라고 경고하였다.

Men from Tyre who lived in Jerusalem were bringing in fish and all kinds of merchandise and selling them in Jerusalem on the Sabbath to the people of Judah. I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, "What is this wicked thing you are doing--desecrating the Sabbath day? Didn't your forefathers do the same things, so that our God brought all this calamity upon us and upon this city? Now you are stirring up more wrath against Israel by desecrating the Sabbath." When evening shadows fell on the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I ordered the doors to be shut and not opened until the Sabbath was over. I stationed some of my own men at the gates so that no load could be brought in on the Sabbath day. Once or twice the merchants and sellers of all kinds of goods spent the night outside Jerusalem. 예루살렘에는 두로 사람도 살고 있었는데, 그들은 안식일에 물고기와 갖가지 물건을 예루살렘으로 들여다가, 유다 백성에게 팔았다. 그래서 나는 유다의 귀족들을 꾸짖었다. "안식일을 이렇게 더럽히다니, 어쩌자고 이런 나쁜 일을 저지르는 거요? 당신들의 조상도 똑같은 일을 하다가, 우리와 우리 도성이 모두 하나님의 재앙을 받지 않았소? 당신들이야말로 안식일을 더럽혀서, 하나님이 이스라엘 위에 진노를 내리시도록 하는 장본인들이오." 나는, 안식일이 되기 전날은, 해거름에 예루살렘 성문에 그림자가 드리우면 성문들을 닫도록 하고, 안식일이 지나기까지 문을 열지 못하게 하였다. 나는 또, 나를 돕는 젊은이들을 성문마다 세워서, 안식일에는 아무것도 들이지 못하게 하였다. 그 뒤로도, 장사하는 이들과 갖가지 물건을 파는 상인들이 예루살렘 성 밖에서 자는 일이 한두 번 있었다.

But I warned them and said, "Why do you spend the night by the wall? If you do this again, I will lay hands on you." From that time on they no longer came on the Sabbath. Then I commanded the Levites to purify themselves and go and guard the gates in order to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember me for this also, O my God, and show mercy to me according to your great love. Moreover, in those days I saw men of Judah who had married women from Ashdod, Ammon and Moab. Half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod or the language of one of the other peoples, and did not know how to speak the language of Judah. I rebuked them and called curses down on them. I beat some of the men and pulled out their hair. I made them take an oath in God's name and said: "You are not to give your daughters in marriage to their sons, nor are you to take their daughters in marriage for your sons or for yourselves. 나는 그들도 꾸짖었다. "어찌하여 당신들은 성 밑에서 잠을 자고 있소? 다시 한 번만 더 그렇게 하면, 잡아들이겠소." 그랬더니, 그 다음부터 안식일에는, 그들이 한 번도 나타나지 않았다. 나는 또 레위 사람들에게, 몸을 깨끗하게 하고 와서 성문마다 지켜서, 안식일을 거룩하게 지내라고 하였다."나의 하나님, 내가 한 이 일도 기억하여 주십시오. 그지없이 크신 주님의 사랑으로 나를 너그러이 보아주십시오." 그 때에 내가 또 보니, 유다 남자들이 아스돗과 암몬과 모압의 여자들을 데려와서 아내로 삼았는데, 그들 사이에서 태어난 아이들의 절반이 아스돗 말이나 다른 나라 말은 하면서도, 유다 말은 못하였다. 나는 그 아버지들을 나무라고, 저주받을 것이라고 하면서 야단을 치고, 그들 가운데 몇몇을 때리기도 하였으며, 머리털을 뽑기까지 하였다. 그런 다음에 하나님을 두고서 맹세하게 하였다. "당신들은 당신들의 딸들을 이방 사람의 아들에게 주지 마시오. 당신들과 당신들의 아들들도 이방 사람의 딸을 아내로 데려와서는 안 되오.

Was it not because of marriages like these that Solomon king of Israel sinned? Among the many nations there was no king like him. He was loved by his God, and God made him king over all Israel, but even he was led into sin by foreign women. Must we hear now that you too are doing all this terrible wickedness and are being unfaithful to our God by marrying foreign women?" One of the sons of Joiada son of Eliashib the high priest was son-in-law to Sanballat the Horonite. And I drove him away from me. Remember them, O my God, because they defiled the priestly office and the covenant of the priesthood and of the Levites. So I purified the priests and the Levites of everything foreign, and assigned them duties, each to his own task. 이스라엘 왕 솔로몬이 죄를 지은 것도, 바로 이방 여자와 결혼한 일이 아니오? 어느 민족에도 그만한 왕이 없었소. 그는 하나님의 사랑을 한 몸에 받았으며, 하나님은 그를 온 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼으셨소. 그러나 그마저 죄를 짓게 된 것은 이방 아내들 때문이오. 이제 당신들이 이방 여자들을 아내로 데려와서, 이렇게 큰 잘못을 저지르며 하나님을 거역하고 있는데, 우리가 어찌 보고만 있을 수 있소?" 대제사장 엘리아십의 손자인 요야다의 아들 가운데 하나가 호론 사람 산발랏의 사위가 되었기에, 나는 그자를, 내 앞에서 얼씬도 못하도록 쫓아냈다. "나의 하나님, 그들을 잊지 마십시오. 그들은 제사장 직을 더럽히고, 제사장과 레위 사람의 언약을 저버린 자들입니다." 나는 제사장들과 레위 사람들에게 묻은 이방 사람의 부정을 모두 씻게 한 뒤에, 임무를 맡겨 저마다 맡은 일을 하게 하였다.

I also made provision for contributions of wood at designated times, and for the firstfruits. Remember me with favor, O my God. 또 사람들에게 때를 정하여 주어서, 제단에서 쓸 장작과 처음 거둔 소산을 바치게 하였다."나의 하나님, 나를 기억하여 주시고, 복을 내려 주십시오."
