This is what happened during the time of Xerxes, the Xerxes who ruled over 127 provinces stretching from India to Cush : At that time King Xerxes reigned from his royal throne in the citadel of Susa, and in the third year of his reign he gave a banquet for all his nobles and officials. The military leaders of Persia and Media, the princes, and the nobles of the provinces were present. For a full 180 days he displayed the vast wealth of his kingdom and the splendor and glory of his majesty. When these days were over, the king gave a banquet, lasting seven days, in the enclosed garden of the king's palace, for all the people from the least to the greatest, who were in the citadel of Susa. 아하수에로 왕 때에 있은 일이다. 아하수에로는 인도에서 에티오피아에 이르기까지 백스물일곱 지방을 다스린 왕이다. 아하수에로 왕은 도성 수산에서 왕위에 올라, 나라를 다스린 지 삼 년째 되던 해에, 모든 총독들과 신하들을 불러서 잔치를 베풀었다. 페르시아와 메대의 장수들과 귀족들과 각 지방 총독들을 왕궁으로 초대하여, 자기 왕국이 지닌 영화로운 부요와 찬란한 위엄을 과시하였다. 잔치는 여러 날 동안, 무려 백팔십 일이나 계속되었다. 이 기간이 끝난 뒤에, 왕은 도성 수산에 있는 백성을, 빈부귀천을 가리지 않고 모두 왕궁 정원 안뜰로 불러들여서, 이레 동안 잔치를 베풀었다.

The garden had hangings of white and blue linen, fastened with cords of white linen and purple material to silver rings on marble pillars. There were couches of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of porphyry, marble, mother-of-pearl and other costly stones. Wine was served in goblets of gold, each one different from the other, and the royal wine was abundant, in keeping with the king's liberality. By the king's command each guest was allowed to drink in his own way, for the king instructed all the wine stewards to serve each man what he wished. Queen Vashti also gave a banquet for the women in the royal palace of King Xerxes. On the seventh day, when King Xerxes was in high spirits from wine, he commanded the seven eunuchs who served him--Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar and Carcas- 정원에는, 흰 실과 붉은 빛 털실로 짠 휘장을 쳤는데, 그 휘장은, 대리석 기둥의 은고리에 흰 실과 보랏빛 실로 꼰 끈으로 매달았다. 화반석과 백석과 운모석과 흑석으로 덮인 바닥에는, 금과 은으로 입힌 의자들이 놓여 있었다. 술잔은 모두 금잔이었는데, 모양이 저마다 달랐다. 왕이 내리는 술은 풍성하였다. 그 날은 어전 음주법을 따르지 않았으므로, 많이 마시고 싶은 사람은 많이, 적게 마시고 싶은 사람은 적게 마셨다. 그것은, 왕이 모든 술 심부름꾼에게, 마실 이들이 원하는 만큼 따라 주라고 지시하였기 때문이다. 와스디 왕후도 부인들을 초대하여, 아하수에로 왕의 그 궁궐 안에서 잔치를 베풀었다. 이레가 되는 날에, 왕은 술을 마시고, 기분이 좋아지자, 자기를 받드는 일곱 궁전 내시 곧 므후만과 비스다와 하르보나와 빅다와 아박다와 세달과 가르가스에게 이르기를,

to bring before him Queen Vashti, wearing her royal crown, in order to display her beauty to the people and nobles, for she was lovely to look at. But when the attendants delivered the king's command, Queen Vashti refused to come. Then the king became furious and burned with anger. Since it was customary for the king to consult experts in matters of law and justice, he spoke with the wise men who understood the times and were closest to the king--Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena and Memucan, the seven nobles of Persia and Media who had special access to the king and were highest in the kingdom. "According to law, what must be done to Queen Vashti?" he asked. "She has not obeyed the command of King Xerxes that the eunuchs have taken to her." 와스디 왕후가 왕후의 관을 쓰고, 왕 앞으로 나오게 하라고 명령하였다. 왕후가 미인이므로, 왕은 왕후의 아름다움을 백성과 대신들 앞에서 자랑하고 싶었던 것이다. 그러나 와스디 왕후는 내시들에게 왕의 명령을 전하여 듣고도, 왕 앞에 나오기를 거절하였다. 이 소식을 들은 왕은, 화가 몹시 났다. 마음 속에서 분노가 불같이 치밀어 올랐다. 왕은 곧 법에 밝은 측근 전문가들과 이 일을 의논하였다. 왕이 법과 재판에 관하여 잘 아는 이들과 의논하는 것은 그 나라의 관례였다. 왕 옆에는 가르스나와 세달과 아드마다와 다시스와 메레스와 마르스나와 므무간 등 페르시아와 메대의 일곱 대신이 있어서, 늘 왕과 직접 대면하여 의견을 나누었는데, 그들은 나라 안에서 벼슬이 가장 높은 사람들이었다. "내시들을 시켜서 전달한 나 아하수에로의 왕명을 와스디 왕후가 따르지 않았으니, 이를 법대로 하면, 어떻게 처리해야 하오?"

Then Memucan replied in the presence of the king and the nobles, "Queen Vashti has done wrong, not only against the king but also against all the nobles and the peoples of all the provinces of King Xerxes. For the queen's conduct will become known to all the women, and so they will despise their husbands and say, 'King Xerxes commanded Queen Vashti to be brought before him, but she would not come.' This very day the Persian and Median women of the nobility who have heard about the queen's conduct will respond to all the king's nobles in the same way. There will be no end of disrespect and discord. "Therefore, if it pleases the king, let him issue a royal decree and let it be written in the laws of Persia and Media, which cannot be repealed, that Vashti is never again to enter the presence of King Xerxes. Also let the king give her royal position to someone else who is better than she. Then when the king's edict is proclaimed throughout all his vast realm, all the women will respect their husbands, from the least to the greatest." 므무간이 왕과 대신들 앞에서 대답하였다. "와스디 왕후는 임금님께만 잘못을 저지른 것이 아니라, 아하수에로 왕께서 다스리시는 각 지방에 있는 모든 신하와 백성에게도 잘못을 저질렀습니다. 왕후가 한 이 일은 이제 곧 모든 여인에게 알려질 것입니다. 그렇게 되면, 여인들은 아하수에로 왕이 와스디 왕후에게 어전에 나오라고 하였는데도, 왕후가 나가지 않았다고 하면서, 남편들을 업신여기게 될 것입니다. 페르시아와 메대의 귀부인들이 왕후가 한 일을 알게 되면, 오늘 당장 임금님의 모든 대신에게도 같은 식으로 대할 것입니다. 그러면 멸시와 분노가 걷잡을 수 없이 되풀이될 것입니다. 그러니 임금님만 좋으시다면, 와스디 왕후가 다시는 아하수에로 임금님의 어전에 나오지 못하도록 어명을 내리시고, 그것을 페르시아와 메대의 법으로 정하여, 고치지 못하도록 하셔야 할 줄 압니다. 그리고 왕후의 자리는 그 여인보다 더 훌륭한 다른 사람에게 주시는 것이 마땅하다고 생각합니다. 왕의 칙령이 이 큰 나라 방방곡곡에 선포되면, 낮은 사람이고 높은 사람이고 할 것 없이, 모든 여인이 저마다 자기 남편에게 정중하게 대할 것입니다."

The king and his nobles were pleased with this advice, so the king did as Memucan proposed. He sent dispatches to all parts of the kingdom, to each province in its own script and to each people in its own language, proclaiming in each people's tongue that every man should be ruler over his own household. 왕과 대신들은 그의 말이 옳다고 여기고, 왕은 즉시 므무간이 말한 대로 시행하였다. 왕은 그가 다스리는 모든 지방에 조서를 내렸다. 지방마다 그 지방에서 쓰는 글로, 백성마다 그 백성이 쓰는 말로 조서를 내려서 "남편이 자기 집을 주관하여야 하며, 남편이 쓰는 말이 그 가정에서 쓰는 일상 언어가 되어야 한다"고 선포하였다.
