사무엘하 19장

 

Joab was told, "The king is weeping and mourning for Absalom." And for the whole army the victory that day was turned into mourning, because on that day the troops heard it said, "The king is grieving for his son." The men stole into the city that day as men steal in who are ashamed when they flee from battle. The king covered his face and cried aloud, "O my son Absalom! O Absalom, my son, my son!" Then Joab went into the house to the king and said, "Today you have humiliated all your men, who have just saved your life and the lives of your sons and daughters and the lives of your wives and concubines. 왕이 목놓아 울면서 압살롬의 죽음을 슬퍼하고 있다는 소문이 요압에게 전해졌다. 그래서 모든 군인에게도 그 날의 승리가 슬픔으로 바뀌었다. 왕이 자기의 아들 때문에 몹시 슬퍼한다는 소문이, 그 날 모든 군인에게 퍼졌기 때문이다. 그래서 그 날 군인들은, 마치 싸움터에서 도망쳐 나올 때에 부끄러워서 빠져 나가는 것처럼, 슬며시 성 안으로 들어왔다. 그런데도 왕은 두 손으로 여전히 얼굴을 가린 채로, 큰소리로 "내 아들 압살롬아, 내 아들아, 내 아들 압살롬아!" 하고 울부짖었다. 마침내 요압이 집으로 왕을 찾아가서 항의하였다. "임금님, 모든 부하가 오늘 임금님의 목숨을 건지고, 임금님의 아들들과 딸들의 목숨도 건지고, 모든 왕비의 목숨과 후궁들의 목숨까지 건져 드렸습니다. 그런데 임금님께서는 오히려 오늘 부하들을 부끄럽게 만드셨습니다.

You love those who hate you and hate those who love you. You have made it clear today that the commanders and their men mean nothing to you. I see that you would be pleased if Absalom were alive today and all of us were dead. Now go out and encourage your men. I swear by the LORD that if you don't go out, not a man will be left with you by nightfall. This will be worse for you than all the calamities that have come upon you from your youth till now." So the king got up and took his seat in the gateway. When the men were told, "The king is sitting in the gateway," they all came before him. Meanwhile, the Israelites had fled to their homes. Throughout the tribes of Israel, the people were all arguing with each other, saying, "The king delivered us from the hand of our enemies; he is the one who rescued us from the hand of the Philistines. But now he has fled the country because of Absalom; and Absalom, whom we anointed to rule over us, has died in battle. So why do you say nothing about bringing the king back?" 임금님께서는 어찌하여 임금님을 반역한 무리들은 사랑하시고, 임금님께 충성을 바친 부하들은 미워하시는 겁니까? 우리 지휘관들이나 부하들은 임금님께는 있으나마나 한 사람들입니까? 임금님께서는 오늘 임금님의 본심을 드러내셨습니다. 차라리 오늘, 압살롬이 살고, 우리가 모두 죽었더라면, 임금님께서는 더 기뻐하셨을 것입니다. 그렇지 않으시다면, 이제라도 일어나 밖으로 나가셔서, 임금님의 부하들을 위로의 말로 격려해 주십시오. 제가 주님의 이름을 걸고 맹세하지만, 지금 임금님께서 밖으로 나가지 않으시면, 오늘 밤에 한 사람도 임금님 곁에 남아 있지 않을 것입니다. 그러면 임금님께서 젊은 시절부터 이제까지 당한 그 모든 환난보다도 더 무서운 환난을 당하실 것입니다." 그러자 왕이 일어나서 성문 문루로 나와 앉았다. "임금님께서 성문 문루에 앉아 계신다!" 하는 소식이 모든 부하에게 전해지니, 모든 부하가 왕의 앞으로 나아왔다. 그 사이에 이스라엘 사람들은 모두 도망하여, 저마다 자기 집으로 돌아갔다. 이스라엘 백성은 지파마다 서로 의논이 분분하였다. "다윗 왕은 우리를 원수들의 손아귀에서 구해 주었다. 블레셋 사람의 손아귀에서도 우리를 건져 주었다. 그러나 지금은 압살롬을 피해서 이 나라에서 떠나 있다. 우리가 기름을 부어서 왕으로 세운 압살롬은 싸움터에서 죽었다. 그러니 이제 우리가 다윗 왕을 다시 왕궁으로 모셔 오는 일을 주저할 필요가 어디에 있는가?"

King David sent this message to Zadok and Abiathar, the priests: "Ask the elders of Judah, 'Why should you be the last to bring the king back to his palace, since what is being said throughout Israel has reached the king at his quarters? You are my brothers, my own flesh and blood. So why should you be the last to bring back the king?' And say to Amasa, 'Are you not my own flesh and blood? May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if from now on you are not the commander of my army in place of Joab.' " He won over the hearts of all the men of Judah as though they were one man. They sent word to the king, "Return, you and all your men." Then the king returned and went as far as the Jordan. Now the men of Judah had come to Gilgal to go out and meet the king and bring him across the Jordan. 온 이스라엘이 하는 말이 다윗 왕에게 전달되었다. 다윗 왕은 두 제사장 사독과 아비아달에게 사람을 보내서, 이렇게 말하였다. "유다 장로들에게 나의 말을 전하여 주십시오. 그들이 어찌하여 왕을 다시 왕궁으로 모시는 일에 맨 나중이 되려고 하는지, 그들은 나의 친족이요 나의 골육지친인데, 어찌하여 왕을 다시 모셔 오는 일에 맨 나중이 되려고 하는지, 물어 보시기 바랍니다. 그리고 아마사에게는, 그가 나의 골육지친이면서도, 요압을 대신하여 군대 사령관이 되지 않는다면, 하나님이 나에게 무슨 벌을 내리시더라도, 내가 달게 받겠다고 하더라고 알려 주십시오." 이렇게 다윗이 모든 유다 사람의 마음을 하나같이 자기쪽으로 기울게 하니, 그들이 왕에게 사람을 보내서 말하였다. "임금님께서는 부하들을 모두 거느리고, 어서 빨리 돌아오시기를 바랍니다." 다윗 왕이 돌아오는 길에 요단 강 가에 이르렀는데, 유다 사람들이 왕을 맞이하여 요단 강을 건너게 하려고, 이미 길갈에 와 있었다.

Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, hurried down with the men of Judah to meet King David. With him were a thousand Benjamites, along with Ziba, the steward of Saul's household, and his fifteen sons and twenty servants. They rushed to the Jordan, where the king was. They crossed at the ford to take the king's household over and to do whatever he wished. When Shimei son of Gera crossed the Jordan, he fell prostrate before the king and said to him, "May my lord not hold me guilty. Do not remember how your servant did wrong on the day my lord the king left Jerusalem. May the king put it out of his mind. For I your servant know that I have sinned, but today I have come here as the first of the whole house of Joseph to come down and meet my lord the king." 바후림에 사는 베냐민 사람으로 게라의 아들인 시므이도 급히 와서, 다윗 왕을 맞이하려고, 모든 유다 사람들과 함께 내려왔다. 그는 베냐민 사람 천 명을 거느리고, 사울 집안의 종 시바와 함께 왔는데, 시바도 자기의 아들 열다섯 명과 자기의 종 스무 명을 다 데리고 나아왔다. 이들은 요단 강을 건너서, 왕 앞으로 나아왔다. 그들은 왕의 가족이 강을 건너는 일을 도와서, 왕의 환심을 사려고, 나룻배로 건너갔다. 왕이 요단 강을 건너려고 할 때에, 게라의 아들 시므이가 왕 앞에 엎드려서 말하였다. "임금님, 이 종의 허물을 마음에 두지 말아 주십시오. 높으신 임금님께서 예루살렘에서 떠나시던 날, 제가 저지른 죄악을, 임금님께서는 기억하시거나 마음에 품지 말아 주십시오. 바로 제가 죄를 지은 줄을, 이 종이 잘 알고 있습니다. 그렇기 때문에, 제가 오늘 요셉 지파의 모든 사람 가운데서 맨 먼저 높으신 임금님을 맞으러 내려왔습니다."

Then Abishai son of Zeruiah said, "Shouldn't Shimei be put to death for this? He cursed the LORD's anointed." David replied, "What do you and I have in common, you sons of Zeruiah? This day you have become my adversaries! Should anyone be put to death in Israel today? Do I not know that today I am king over Israel?" So the king said to Shimei, "You shall not die." And the king promised him on oath. Mephibosheth, Saul's grandson, also went down to meet the king. He had not taken care of his feet or trimmed his mustache or washed his clothes from the day the king left until the day he returned safely. When he came from Jerusalem to meet the king, the king asked him, "Why didn't you go with me, Mephibosheth?" 스루야의 아들 아비새가 그 말을 받아서, 왕에게 말하였다. "주님께서 기름 부어 세우신 분을 시므이가 저주하였으니, 그것만으로도 시므이는 죽어야 마땅한 줄 압니다." 그러나 다윗이 말하였다. "스루야의 아들들은 들어라. 나의 일에 왜 너희가 나서서, 오늘 나의 대적이 되느냐? 내가 오늘에서야, 온 이스라엘의 왕이 된 것 같은데, 이런 날에, 이스라엘에서 사람이 처형을 받아서야 되겠느냐?" 왕이 시므이에게 맹세하였다. "너는 처형을 당하지 않을 것이다." 그 때에 사울의 손자 므비보셋도 왕을 맞으러 내려왔다. 그는, 왕이 떠나간 날부터 평안하게 다시 돌아오는 날까지, 발도 씻지 않고, 수염도 깎지 않고, 옷도 빨아 입지 않았다. 그가 예루살렘에서 와서 왕을 맞이하니, 왕이 그에게 물었다. "므비보셋은 어찌하여 나와 함께 떠나지 않았느냐?"

He said, "My lord the king, since I your servant am lame, I said, 'I will have my donkey saddled and will ride on it, so I can go with the king.' But Ziba my servant betrayed me. And he has slandered your servant to my lord the king. My lord the king is like an angel of God; so do whatever pleases you. All my grandfather's descendants deserved nothing but death from my lord the king, but you gave your servant a place among those who eat at your table. So what right do I have to make any more appeals to the king?" The king said to him, "Why say more? I order you and Ziba to divide the fields." Mephibosheth said to the king, "Let him take everything, now that my lord the king has arrived home safely." 그가 대답하였다. "높으신 임금님, 저는 다리를 절기 때문에, 나귀를 타고 임금님과 함께 떠나려고, 제가 탈 나귀에 안장을 얹으라고 저의 종에게 일렀으나, 종이 그만 저를 속였습니다. 그리고는 그가 임금님께 가서, 이 종을 모함까지 하였습니다. 임금님은 하나님의 천사와 같은 분이시니, 임금님께서 좋게 여기시는 대로 처분하시기를 바랍니다. 제 아버지의 온 집안은 임금님에게 죽어도 마땅한 사람들뿐인데, 임금님께서는 이 종을 임금님의 상에서 먹는 사람들과 함께 먹도록 해주셨으니, 이제 저에게 무슨 염치가 있다고, 임금님께 무엇을 더 요구하겠습니까?" 그러나 왕은 그에게 말하였다. "네가 어찌하여 그 이야기를 또 꺼내느냐? 나는 이렇게 결정하였다. 너는 시바와 밭을 나누어 가져라!" 므비보셋이 왕에게 아뢰었다. "높으신 임금님께서 안전하게 왕궁으로 돌아오시게 되었는데, 이제 그가 그 밭을 다 차지한들 어떻습니까?"

Barzillai the Gileadite also came down from Rogelim to cross the Jordan with the king and to send him on his way from there. Now Barzillai was a very old man, eighty years of age. He had provided for the king during his stay in Mahanaim, for he was a very wealthy man. The king said to Barzillai, "Cross over with me and stay with me in Jerusalem, and I will provide for you." But Barzillai answered the king, "How many more years will I live, that I should go up to Jerusalem with the king? I am now eighty years old. Can I tell the difference between what is good and what is not? Can your servant taste what he eats and drinks? Can I still hear the voices of men and women singers? Why should your servant be an added burden to my lord the king? 그 때에 길르앗 사람 바르실래도 로글림에서 내려와서, 왕이 요단 강을 건너는 일을 도우려고, 요단 강 가에 이르렀다. 바르실래는 아주 늙은 사람으로, 나이가 여든 살이나 되었다. 그는 큰 부자였으므로, 왕이 마하나임에 머물러 있는 동안에 왕에게 음식을 공급하였다. 왕이 바르실래에게 말하였다. "노인께서는 나와 함께 건너가시지요. 나와 같이 가시면 내가 잘 대접하겠습니다." 그러나 바르실래는 왕에게 아뢰었다. "제가 얼마나 더 오래 산다고, 임금님과 함께 예루살렘으로 올라가겠습니까? 제 나이가 지금 여든입니다. 제가 이 나이에 좋은 것과 나쁜 것을 어떻게 가릴 줄 알겠습니까? 이 종이 무엇을 먹고 무엇을 마신들, 그 맛을 알기나 하겠습니까? 노래하는 남녀가 아름다운 노래를 부른들, 제가 이 나이에 잘 알아듣기나 하겠습니까? 그러니 이 종이 높으신 임금님께 다시 짐이 되어서야 되겠습니까?

Your servant will cross over the Jordan with the king for a short distance, but why should the king reward me in this way? Let your servant return, that I may die in my own town near the tomb of my father and mother. But here is your servant Kimham. Let him cross over with my lord the king. Do for him whatever pleases you." The king said, "Kimham shall cross over with me, and I will do for him whatever pleases you. And anything you desire from me I will do for you." So all the people crossed the Jordan, and then the king crossed over. The king kissed Barzillai and gave him his blessing, and Barzillai returned to his home. When the king crossed over to Gilgal, Kimham crossed with him. All the troops of Judah and half the troops of Israel had taken the king over. 이 종은 임금님을 모시고 요단 강을 건너려는 것 뿐인데, 어찌하여 임금님께서는 이러한 상을 저에게 베푸시려고 하십니까? 부디 이 종을 돌아가게 하셔서, 고향 마을에 있는 제 아버지와 어머니의 무덤 곁에서 죽게 하여 주시기를 바랍니다. 그 대신에 이 종의 아들 김함이 여기에 있으니, 그가 높으신 임금님을 따라가게 하시고, 임금님께서 바라시는 대로, 그에게 잘 대하여 주시기를 바랍니다." 그러자 왕이 약속하였다. "물론, 내가 김함을 데리고 가겠소. 그리고 노인께서 보시기에 만족하도록, 내가 그에게 잘 대하여 주겠고, 또 나에게 특별히 부탁한 것은 무엇이든지, 내가 다 이루어 드리겠소." 드디어 온 백성이 요단 강을 건넜고, 왕도 건너갔다. 왕이 바르실래에게 입을 맞추고 복을 빌어 주니, 바르실래가 자기의 고장으로 돌아갔다. 왕이 길갈로 건너갈 때에 김함도 왕을 따라서 건너갔다. 온 유다 백성과 이스라엘 백성의 절반이나 왕을 따라서, 요단 강을 건너갔다.

Soon all the men of Israel were coming to the king and saying to him, "Why did our brothers, the men of Judah, steal the king away and bring him and his household across the Jordan, together with all his men?" All the men of Judah answered the men of Israel, "We did this because the king is closely related to us. Why are you angry about it? Have we eaten any of the king's provisions? Have we taken anything for ourselves?" Then the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, "We have ten shares in the king; and besides, we have a greater claim on David than you have. So why do you treat us with contempt? Were we not the first to speak of bringing back our king?" But the men of Judah responded even more harshly than the men of Israel. 그런데 갑자기 온 이스라엘 사람이 왕에게 몰려와서, 이렇게 말하였다. "어찌하여 우리의 형제인 유다 사람들이 우리와 의논도 없이, 임금님을 몰래 빼돌려 임금님과 임금님의 가족과 다윗 왕의 모든 신하를 모시고 건넜습니까?" 그러자 온 유다 사람이 이스라엘 사람에게 대답하였다. "우리가 임금님과 더 가깝기 때문이다. 너희가 이런 일로 그렇게 화를 낼 이유가 무엇이냐? 우리가 임금님께 조금이라도 얻어 먹은 것이 있느냐? 임금님이 우리에게 조금이라도 주신 것이 있어서 그러는 줄 아느냐?" 그러나 이스라엘 사람은 유다 사람에게 이렇게 말하였다. "우리는 임금님께 요구할 권리가 너희보다 열 갑절이나 더 있다. 그런데 어찌하여 너희는 우리를 무시하였느냐? 높으신 임금님을 우리가 다시 모셔와야 되겠다고 맨 먼저 말한 사람이, 바로 우리가 아니었느냐?" 그래도 유다 사람의 말이 이스라엘 사람의 말보다 더 강경하였다.
