사무엘하 18장

 

David mustered the men who were with him and appointed over them commanders of thousands and commanders of hundreds. David sent the troops out--a third under the command of Joab, a third under Joab's brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, and a third under Ittai the Gittite. The king told the troops, "I myself will surely march out with you." But the men said, "You must not go out; if we are forced to flee, they won't care about us. Even if half of us die, they won't care; but you are worth ten thousand of us. It would be better now for you to give us support from the city." The king answered, "I will do whatever seems best to you." So the king stood beside the gate while all the men marched out in units of hundreds and of thousands. The king commanded Joab, Abishai and Ittai, "Be gentle with the young man Absalom for my sake." And all the troops heard the king giving orders concerning Absalom to each of the commanders. 다윗은 자기와 함께 있는 백성을 점검하여 보고, 그들 위에 천부장들과 백부장들을 세웠다. 다윗은 또 모든 백성을 세 떼로 나눈 뒤에, 삼분의 일은 요압에게 맡기고, 또 삼분의 일은 스루야의 아들이며 요압의 동생인 아비새에게 맡기고, 나머지 삼분의 일은 가드 사람 잇대에게 맡겼다. 그런 다음에 왕이 온 백성에게 자기도 그들과 함께 싸움터로 나가겠다고 선언하니, 온 백성이 외쳤다. "임금님께서 나가시면 안 됩니다. 우리가 도망을 친다 하여도, 그들이 우리에게는 마음을 두지 않을 것이며, 우리가 절반이나 죽는다 하여도, 그들은 우리에게 마음을 두지 않을 것입니다. 임금님은 우리들 만 명과 다름이 없으십니다. 그러니 임금님은 이제 성 안에 계시면서, 우리를 도우시는 것이 더 좋겠습니다." 그러자 왕은 그들의 의견을 따르겠다고 말하고 성문 곁에 서 있으니, 온 백성이 백 명씩, 천 명씩, 부대별로 나아갔다. 그 때에 왕이 요압과 아비새와 잇대에게 부탁하였다. "나를 생각해서라도, 저 어린 압살롬을 너그럽게 대하여 주시오." 왕이 압살롬을 너그럽게 대하여 달라고 모든 지휘관에게 부탁하는 말을, 온 백성이 다 들었다.

The army marched into the field to fight Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. There the army of Israel was defeated by David's men, and the casualties that day were great--twenty thousand men. The battle spread out over the whole countryside, and the forest claimed more lives that day than the sword. Now Absalom happened to meet David's men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom's head got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going. When one of the men saw this, he told Joab, "I just saw Absalom hanging in an oak tree." 다윗의 군대가 이스라엘 사람과 싸우려고 들녘으로 나아가서, 에브라임 숲 속에서 싸움을 하였다. 거기에서 이스라엘 백성이 다윗의 부하들에게 패하였는데, 그들은 그 날 거기에서 크게 패하여서, 이만 명이나 죽었다. 싸움이 온 땅 사방으로 번져 나가자, 그 날 숲 속에서 목숨을 잃은 군인이 칼에 찔려서 죽은 군인보다 더 많았다. 압살롬이 어쩌다가 다윗의 부하들과 마주쳤다. 압살롬은 노새를 타고 있었는데, 그 노새가 큰 상수리나무의 울창한 가지 밑으로 달려갈 때에, 그의 머리채가 상수리나무에 휘감기는 바람에, 그는 공중에 매달리고, 그가 타고 가던 노새는 빠져나갔다. 어떤 사람이 이것을 보고서, 요압에게 알려 주었다. "압살롬이 상수리나무에 매달려 있습니다."

Joab said to the man who had told him this, "What! You saw him? Why didn't you strike him to the ground right there? Then I would have had to give you ten shekels of silver and a warrior's belt." But the man replied, "Even if a thousand shekels were weighed out into my hands, I would not lift my hand against the king's son. In our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, 'Protect the young man Absalom for my sake. ' And if I had put my life in jeopardy --and nothing is hidden from the king--you would have kept your distance from me." Joab said, "I'm not going to wait like this for you." So he took three javelins in his hand and plunged them into Absalom's heart while Absalom was still alive in the oak tree. And ten of Joab's armor-bearers surrounded Absalom, struck him and killed him. 요압이 자기에게 소식을 전하여 준 그 사람에게 물었다. "네가 그를 보았는데도, 왜 그를 당장에 쳐서 땅에 쓰러뜨리지 않았느냐? 그랬더라면, 내가 너에게 은 열 개와 띠 하나를 주었을 것이다." 그 사람이 요압에게 대답하였다. "비록 은 천 개를 달아서 저의 손에 쥐어 주신다고 하여도, 저는 감히 손을 들어 임금님의 아들을 치지 않을 것입니다. 임금님께서 우리 모두가 듣도록, 장군님과 아비새와 잇대에게, 누구든지 어린 압살롬을 보호하여 달라고 부탁하셨기 때문입니다. 제가 임금님을 속이고, 그의 생명을 해치면, 임금님 앞에서는 아무 일도 숨길 수가 없기 때문에, 장군님까지도 저에게서 등을 돌릴 것입니다." 그러자 요압은 "너하고 이렇게 꾸물거릴 시간이 없다" 하고 말한 뒤에, 투창 세 자루를 손에 들고 가서, 아직도 상수리나무의 한가운데 산 채로 매달려 있는 압살롬의 심장을 꿰뚫었다. 요압의 무기를 들고 다니는 젊은이 열 명도 모두 둘러싸고서, 압살롬을 쳐서 죽였다.

Then Joab sounded the trumpet, and the troops stopped pursuing Israel, for Joab halted them. They took Absalom, threw him into a big pit in the forest and piled up a large heap of rocks over him. Meanwhile, all the Israelites fled to their homes. During his lifetime Absalom had taken a pillar and erected it in the King's Valley as a monument to himself, for he thought, "I have no son to carry on the memory of my name." He named the pillar after himself, and it is called Absalom's Monument to this day. Now Ahimaaz son of Zadok said, "Let me run and take the news to the king that the LORD has delivered him from the hand of his enemies." "You are not the one to take the news today," Joab told him. "You may take the news another time, but you must not do so today, because the king's son is dead." 그런 다음에 요압이 나팔을 부니, 백성이 이스라엘 사람을 뒤쫓다가 돌아왔다. 요압이 백성에게 싸움을 그치게 하였기 때문이다. 그들은 압살롬을 들어다가 숲 속의 깊은 구덩이에 집어던지고, 그 위에다가 아주 큰 돌무더기를 쌓았다. 온 이스라엘 사람들은 도망하여서, 저마다 자기 장막으로 돌아갔다. 평소에 압살롬은, 자기의 이름을 후대에 남길 아들이 없다고 생각하여, 살아 있을 때에 이미 자기 비석을 준비하여 세웠는데, 그것이 지금 '왕의 골짜기'에 있다. 압살롬이 그 돌기둥을 자기의 이름을 따서 불렀기 때문에, 사람들은 그것을 오늘날까지도 '압살롬의 비석'이라고 한다. 그 때에 사독의 아들 아히마아스가 요압에게 말하였다. "제가 임금님에게로 달려가서, 주님께서 임금님을 원수에게서 구원하셨다는 이 기쁜 소식을 전하겠습니다." 그러나 요압이 말렸다. "오늘은 아무리 좋은 소식이라도, 네가 전하여서는 안 된다. 너는 다른 날 이 좋은 소식을 전하여도 된다. 그러나 오늘은 날이 아니다. 오늘은 임금님의 아들이 죽은 날이다."

Then Joab said to a Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed down before Joab and ran off. Ahimaaz son of Zadok again said to Joab, "Come what may, please let me run behind the Cushite." But Joab replied, "My son, why do you want to go? You don't have any news that will bring you a reward." He said, "Come what may, I want to run." So Joab said, "Run!" Then Ahimaaz ran by way of the plain and outran the Cushite. While David was sitting between the inner and outer gates, the watchman went up to the roof of the gateway by the wall. As he looked out, he saw a man running alone. The watchman called out to the king and reported it. The king said, "If he is alone, he must have good news." And the man came closer and closer. 그리고는, 요압이 에티오피아 사람에게 명령하였다. "네가 가서, 본 대로 임금님께 아뢰어라." 그러자 그 에티오피아 사람이 요압에게 절을 하고 달려갔다. 사독의 아들 아히마아스가 또다시 요압에게 말하였다. "저에게 무슨 일이 일어나도 좋으니, 저도 저 에티오피아 사람과 같이 가서 보고할 수 있도록 허락하여 주십시오." 그러나 요압은 또 말렸다. "아히마아스야, 네가 왜 가려고 하는지 모르겠구나. 네가 가 보아야, 이 소식으로는 아무 상도 받지 못한다." 아히마아스가 또다시 말하였다. "저에게 무슨 일이 일어나도 좋으니, 저도 가겠습니다." 요압이 그에게 말하였다. "그렇다면, 더 말리지 않겠다." 아히마아스는 요단 계곡을 지나는 길로 달려서, 그 에티오피아 사람을 앞질렀다. 그 때에, 다윗은 두 성문 곧 안문과 바깥문 사이에 앉아 있었는데, 파수꾼이 성문의 지붕 위로 올라가서, 성벽 위에서 멀리 바라보고 있다가, 어떤 사람이 혼자 달려오는 것을 보았다. 파수꾼이 큰소리로 이 사실을 왕에게 알리니, 왕은 "혼자 오는 사람이면 좋은 소식을 전하는 사람이다" 하고 대답하였다. 그 사람이 점점 더 가까이에 이르렀다.

Then the watchman saw another man running, and he called down to the gatekeeper, "Look, another man running alone!" The king said, "He must be bringing good news, too." The watchman said, "It seems to me that the first one runs like Ahimaaz son of Zadok." "He's a good man," the king said. "He comes with good news." Then Ahimaaz called out to the king, "All is well!" He bowed down before the king with his face to the ground and said, "Praise be to the LORD your God! He has delivered up the men who lifted their hands against my lord the king." The king asked, "Is the young man Absalom safe?" Ahimaaz answered, "I saw great confusion just as Joab was about to send the king's servant and me, your servant, but I don't know what it was." The king said, "Stand aside and wait here." So he stepped aside and stood there. 파수꾼이 보니, 또 한 사람이 달려오고 있었다. 파수꾼이 큰소리로 문지기에게 "또 한 사람이 달려온다" 하고 외치니, 왕은 "그도 좋은 소식을 전하는 사람이다" 하고 말하였다. 파수꾼이 또 알렸다. "제가 보기에, 앞서서 오는 사람은 달리는 것이, 사독의 아들 아히마아스가 달리는 것과 같습니다." 그러자 왕이 대답하였다. "그는 좋은 사람이니, 좋은 소식을 전하러 올 것이다." 아히마아스가 왕에게 가까이 이르러서 "평안하시기를 빕니다" 하고 인사를 드리며, 얼굴이 땅에 닿도록 왕에게 절을 하며 아뢰었다. "높으신 임금님께 반역한 자들을 없애 버리시고, 임금님께 승리를 안겨 주신, 임금님의 주 하나님을 찬양합니다." 왕이 "그 어린 압살롬도 평안하더냐?" 하고 물으니, 아히마아스는 "임금님의 신하 요압이 이 종을 보낼 때에, 큰 소동이 있었습니다마는, 무슨 일인지는 모르겠습니다." 왕이 "물러나서 곁에 서 있어라" 하고 말하니, 그는 곁으로 물러나서 서 있었다.

Then the Cushite arrived and said, "My lord the king, hear the good news! The LORD has delivered you today from all who rose up against you." The king asked the Cushite, "Is the young man Absalom safe?" The Cushite replied, "May the enemies of my lord the king and all who rise up to harm you be like that young man." The king was shaken. He went up to the room over the gateway and wept. As he went, he said: "O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you--O Absalom, my son, my son!" 바로 그 때에 그 에티오피아 사람이 들어왔다. 에티오피아 사람이 왕에게 아뢰었다. "높으신 임금님께 기쁜 소식을 가져 왔습니다. 주님께서 오늘 임금님께 반역한 자들을 없애 버리시고, 임금님께 승리를 안겨 주셨습니다." 왕이 에티오피아 사람에게 물었다. "그 어린 압살롬이 평안하더냐?" 에티오피아 사람이 대답하였다. "높으신 임금님의 원수들을 비롯하여, 임금님께 반역한 자들이 모조리 그 젊은이와 같이 되기를 바랍니다." 왕은 이 말을 듣고, 마음이 찢어질 듯이 아파서, 성문 위의 다락방으로 올라가서 울었다. 그는 올라갈 때에 "내 아들 압살롬아, 내 아들아, 내 아들 압살롬아, 너 대신에 차라리 내가 죽을 것을, 압살롬아, 내 아들아, 내 아들아!" 하고 울부짖었다.
