여호수아 10장

 

Now Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had taken Ai and totally destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and that the people of Gibeon had made a treaty of peace with Israel and were living near them. He and his people were very much alarmed at this, because Gibeon was an important city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were good fighters. So Adoni-Zedek king of Jerusalem appealed to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish and Debir king of Eglon. "Come up and help me attack Gibeon," he said, "because it has made peace with Joshua and the Israelites." Then the five kings of the Amorites--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon--joined forces. They moved up with all their troops and took up positions against Gibeon and attacked it. 예루살렘 왕 아도니세덱은, 여호수아가 아이 성을 점령하면서, 여리고 성과 그 왕에게 한 것과 꼭 같이 아이 성과 그 왕을 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤다는 소식과, 또 기브온 주민이 이스라엘과 화친하고 그들과 함께 살고 있다는 소식을 듣고, 몹시 놀랐다. 기브온으로 말하면 왕이 있는 도성처럼 큰 성읍이고, 아이 성보다도 더 큰 성인데다가, 기브온 주민은 모두 용맹한 전사들이었기 때문이다. 그래서 예루살렘 왕 아도니세덱은 헤브론 왕 호함과 야르뭇 왕 비람과 라기스 왕 야비아와 에글론 왕 드빌에게 전갈을 보냈다. "내게로 와서, 나를 도와주십시오. 우리가 함께 기브온을 칩시다. 기브온이 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손과 화친하였다고 합니다." 그리하여 아모리 족속의 다섯 왕 곧 예루살렘 왕과 헤브론 왕과 야르뭇 왕과 라기스 왕과 에글론 왕이 연합하여, 그들의 모든 군대를 거느리고 올라와서, 기브온을 공격하려고 진을 쳤다.

The Gibeonites then sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: "Do not abandon your servants. Come up to us quickly and save us! Help us, because all the Amorite kings from the hill country have joined forces against us." So Joshua marched up from Gilgal with his entire army, including all the best fighting men. The LORD said to Joshua, "Do not be afraid of them; I have given them into your hand. Not one of them will be able to withstand you." After an all-night march from Gilgal, Joshua took them by surprise. The LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great victory at Gibeon. Israel pursued them along the road going up to Beth Horon and cut them down all the way to Azekah and Makkedah. 기브온 사람들은 길갈 진에 있는 여호수아에게 전갈을 보냈다. "이 종들을 버리지 마십시오. 속히 우리에게로 와서 우리를 구출하여 주십시오. 우리를 도와주십시오. 산간지방에 거주하는 아모리 왕들이 연합군을 이끌고 우리를 공격하였습니다." 여호수아는 정예부대를 포함한 전군을 이끌고, 길갈에서 진군하여 올라갔다. 그 때에 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "그들을 두려워하지 말아라. 내가 그들을 너의 손에 넘겨 주었다. 그들 가운데서 한 사람도 너를 당할 수 없을 것이다." 길갈에서 떠난 여호수아의 군대는, 밤새도록 진군하여 기습작전을 폈다. 주님께서 이스라엘 군대 앞에서 그들을 혼란에 빠지게 하시니, 여호수아는 기브온에서 그들을 크게 무찔러 승리하였다. 그는 벳호론의 오르막길을 따라서 아세가와 막게다까지 추격하여 그들을 무찔렀다.

As they fled before Israel on the road down from Beth Horon to Azekah, the LORD hurled large hailstones down on them from the sky, and more of them died from the hailstones than were killed by the swords of the Israelites. On the day the LORD gave the Amorites over to Israel, Joshua said to the LORD in the presence of Israel: "O sun, stand still over Gibeon, O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon." So the sun stood still, and the moon stopped, till the nation avenged itself on its enemies, as it is written in the Book of Jashar. The sun stopped in the middle of the sky and delayed going down about a full day. There has never been a day like it before or since, a day when the LORD listened to a man. Surely the LORD was fighting for Israel! Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal. 그들이 이스라엘 군대 앞에서 도망하여 벳호론의 내리막길에 이르렀을 때에, 주님께서, 거기에서부터 아세가에 이르기까지, 하늘에서 그들에게 큰 우박을 퍼부으셨으므로, 많은 사람이 죽었다. 우박으로 죽은 자가 이스라엘 자손의 칼에 찔려서 죽은 자보다 더 많았다. 주님께서 아모리 사람들을 이스라엘 자손에게 넘겨 주신 날에, 여호수아가 주님께 아뢰었다. 이스라엘 백성이 보는 앞에서 그가 외쳤다. "태양아, 기브온 위에 머물러라! 달아, 아얄론 골짜기에 머물러라!" 백성이 그 원수를 정복할 때까지 태양이 멈추고, 달이 멈추어 섰다. '야살의 책'에 해가 중천에 머물러 종일토록 지지 않았다고 한 말이, 바로 이것을 두고 한 말이다. 주님께서 사람의 목소리를 이 날처럼 이렇게 들어주신 일은, 전에도 없었고 뒤에도 없었다. 주님께서는 이처럼 이스라엘을 편들어 싸우셨다. 여호수아 및 그와 함께 한 모든 이스라엘 군대가 길갈에 있는 진으로 돌아왔다.

Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah. When Joshua was told that the five kings had been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah, he said, "Roll large rocks up to the mouth of the cave, and post some men there to guard it. But don't stop! Pursue your enemies, attack them from the rear and don't let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has given them into your hand." So Joshua and the Israelites destroyed them completely--almost to a man--but the few who were left reached their fortified cities. 아모리의 다섯 왕은 도망하여 막게다의 굴에 숨어 있었다. 누군가가 여호수아에게 그 다섯 왕이 막게다의 굴에 숨어 있다고 알려 왔다. 여호수아가 명령을 내렸다. "큰 돌을 굴려 그 굴 어귀를 막고, 그 곁에 사람을 두어서 지켜라. 너희는 지체 말고 적을 추격하여 그 후군을 치고, 그들이 성으로 들어가는 것을 막아라. 주 너희 하나님이 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주셨다." 여호수아와 이스라엘 자손이 그들을 아주 크게 무찔러 거의 전멸시켰다. 적 가운데서 살아 남은 몇몇은 요새화된 자기들의 성으로 들어갔다.

The whole army then returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one uttered a word against the Israelites. Joshua said, "Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me." So they brought the five kings out of the cave--the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, "Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings." So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks. Joshua said to them, "Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the LORD will do to all the enemies you are going to fight." 여호수아의 모든 군대는 막게다 진에 있는 여호수아에게 무사히 돌아왔다. 그 땅에서는 어느 누구도 감히 혀를 놀려 이스라엘 자손을 헐뜯지 못하였다. 그 때에 여호수아가 명령을 내렸다. "굴 입구를 열어라. 저 다섯 왕을 굴에서 끌어내어, 내 앞으로 데려오너라." 그들은 명령대로 그 다섯 왕을 굴에서 끌어내어, 여호수아에게로 끌고 왔다. 그 다섯 왕은 예루살렘 왕과 헤브론 왕과 야르뭇 왕과 라기스 왕과 에글론 왕이다. 그들이 이 다섯 왕을 여호수아에게 끌고 오자, 여호수아가 모든 이스라엘 사람을 불러모으고, 그와 함께 전투에 나갔던 지휘관들에게 명령하였다. "가까이 와서, 너희 발로 이 왕들의 목을 밟아라." 그러자 그들은 가까이 나아가서, 발로 왕들의 목을 밟았다. 여호수아가 지휘관들에게 말하였다. "두려워하지 말고 놀라지 마시오. 굳세고 용감하시오. 주님께서 당신들이 대항하여 싸우는 모든 원수에게 다 이와 같이 하실 것이오."

Then Joshua struck and killed the kings and hung them on five trees, and they were left hanging on the trees until evening. At sunset Joshua gave the order and they took them down from the trees and threw them into the cave where they had been hiding. At the mouth of the cave they placed large rocks, which are there to this day. That day Joshua took Makkedah. He put the city and its king to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it. He left no survivors. And he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho. Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and attacked it. The LORD also gave that city and its king into Israel's hand. The city and everyone in it Joshua put to the sword. He left no survivors there. And he did to its king as he had done to the king of Jericho. 그런 다음에 여호수아는 그들을 쳐죽여서 나무 다섯 그루에 매달아서, 저녁때까지 나무 위에 그대로 달아 두었다. 해가 질 무렵에 여호수아가 지시하니, 사람들은 나무에서 그들을 끌어내려 그들이 숨어 있던 그 굴에 던지고, 굴 어귀를 큰 돌로 막았다. 그 곳은 오늘날까지 그대로 있다. 그 날에 여호수아가 막게다 성읍을 점령하고, 칼로 성읍과 그 왕을 무찌르고, 그 성 안에 있는 모든 사람을 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤으며, 산 사람이라고는 하나도 남기지 않았다. 그는 여리고 성의 왕에게 한 것과 꼭 같이 막게다 성의 왕을 무찔렀다. 여호수아는 자기를 따르는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 더불어 막게다에서 립나로 건너가서, 립나와 싸웠다. 주님께서 립나도 그 왕과 함께 이스라엘의 손에 넘겨 주셨기 때문에, 여호수아가 칼로 그 성과 그 성 안에 있는 모든 사람을 무찔러서, 그 안에 산 사람이라고는 하나도 남기지 않았다. 여호수아는 여리고 성의 왕에게 한 것과 같이 립나의 왕도 무찔렀다.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish; he took up positions against it and attacked it. The LORD handed Lachish over to Israel, and Joshua took it on the second day. The city and everyone in it he put to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah. Meanwhile, Horam king of Gezer had come up to help Lachish, but Joshua defeated him and his army--until no survivors were left. Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Lachish to Eglon; they took up positions against it and attacked it. They captured it that same day and put it to the sword and totally destroyed everyone in it, just as they had done to Lachish. 또 여호수아는 자기를 따르는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 더불어 립나에서 라기스로 건너가서, 진을 치고 전투를 벌였다. 주님께서 라기스를 이스라엘 사람의 손에 넘겨 주셨기 때문에, 그 이튿날 이스라엘은 그 성을 점령하였고, 립나에서 한 것과 꼭 같이, 칼로 성과 그 안에 있는 모든 사람을 무찔렀다. 그 때에 게셀 왕 호람이 라기스를 도우려고 올라왔다. 여호수아는 그 왕과 그 백성을, 살아 남은 사람이 한 사람도 없을 때까지 무찔렀다. 여호수아는 자기를 따르는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 더불어 라기스에서 에글론으로 건너가서, 진을 치고 전투를 벌였다. 그들은 그 날 그 성을 점령하고, 칼로 그 성과 그 안에 있는 모든 사람을 무찌르고, 라기스에서 한 것과 꼭 같이, 그들을 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤다.

Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and attacked it. They took the city and put it to the sword, together with its king, its villages and everyone in it. They left no survivors. Just as at Eglon, they totally destroyed it and everyone in it. Then Joshua and all Israel with him turned around and attacked Debir. They took the city, its king and its villages, and put them to the sword. Everyone in it they totally destroyed. They left no survivors. They did to Debir and its king as they had done to Libnah and its king and to Hebron. So Joshua subdued the whole region, including the hill country, the Negev, the western foothills and the mountain slopes, together with all their kings. He left no survivors. He totally destroyed all who breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded. 여호수아는 자기를 따르는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 더불어 에글론에서 헤브론으로 쳐올라가서, 그들과 맞서서 전투를 벌였다. 그들이 그 성을 점령하고, 에글론에서와 꼭 같이, 그 왕과 온 성과 그 안에 사는 모든 사람을 한 사람도 살려 두지 않고 칼로 무찔렀다. 그들은 그 성과 그 성 안에 사는 모든 사람을 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤다. 여호수아는 자기를 따르는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 더불어 드빌로 돌아와서, 전투를 벌였다. 그는 그 성과 왕과 그의 모든 성읍들을 점령하고, 칼로 쳐서, 그 안에 사는 모든 사람을 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤으며, 한 사람도 살려 두지 않았다. 그는 헤브론과 립나와 그 왕에게 한 것과 꼭 같이 드빌과 그 왕을 무찔렀다. 이와 같이 여호수아는 온 땅 곧 산간지방과 네겝 지방과 평지와 경사지와 그들의 모든 왕을 무찔러 한 사람도 살려 두지 않았으며, 이스라엘의 주 하나님의 명을 따라, 살아서 숨쉬는 것은 모두 전멸시켜서 희생제물로 바쳤다.

Joshua subdued them from Kadesh Barnea to Gaza and from the whole region of Goshen to Gibeon. All these kings and their lands Joshua conquered in one campaign, because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel. Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal. 또한 여호수아는 가데스바네아에서 가사까지, 그리고 온 고센 땅뿐만 아니라 기브온에 이르기까지 모두 무찔렀다. 주 이스라엘 하나님이 이스라엘의 편이 되어 싸우셨기 때문에, 여호수아는 단번에 이 모든 왕과 그 땅을 손에 넣었다. 여호수아는 자기를 따르는 모든 이스라엘 사람과 더불어 길갈에 있는 진으로 돌아왔다.
