여호수아 9장

 

Now when all the kings west of the Jordan heard about these things--those in the hill country, in the western foothills, and along the entire coast of the Great Sea as far as Lebanon (the kings of the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites)- they came together to make war against Joshua and Israel. However, when the people of Gibeon heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai, they resorted to a ruse: They went as a delegation whose donkeys were loaded with worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended. The men put worn and patched sandals on their feet and wore old clothes. All the bread of their food supply was dry and moldy. 요단 강 서쪽의 야산과 평원지대와 지중해 연안에서 레바논에 이르는 곳에 사는 헷 사람과 아모리 사람과 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람의 모든 왕이 이 소식을 듣고, 함께 모여서, 여호수아와 이스라엘에 맞서서 싸우기로 뜻을 모았다. 히위 사람인 기브온 주민들은, 여호수아라는 사람이 여리고 성과 아이 성에서 한 일을 듣고서, 여호수아를 속이기로 결정하였다. 그들은 낡은 부대와 해어지고 터져서 기운 가죽 포도주 부대를 나귀에 싣고서, 외모를 사절단처럼 꾸미고 길을 떠났다. 발에는 낡아서 기운 신을 신고, 몸에는 낡은 옷을 걸쳤으며, 마르고 곰팡이 난 빵을 준비하였다.

Then they went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, "We have come from a distant country; make a treaty with us." The men of Israel said to the Hivites, "But perhaps you live near us. How then can we make a treaty with you?" "We are your servants," they said to Joshua. But Joshua asked, "Who are you and where do you come from?" They answered: "Your servants have come from a very distant country because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard reports of him: all that he did in Egypt, and all that he did to the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan--Sihon king of Heshbon, and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth. 그들은 길갈 진에 있는 여호수아에게 와서, 그와 이스라엘 사람들에게 말하였다. "당신들은 누구이며, 어디에서 왔소?" 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. "종들은 주 하나님의 명성을 듣고서, 아주 먼 곳에서 왔습니다. 우리는 주님께서 이집트에서 하신 모든 일을 들었으며, 또 주님께서 요단 강 동쪽 아모리 사람의 두 왕 곧 헤스본 왕 시혼과 아스다롯에 있는 바산 왕 옥에게 하신 일을 모두 들었습니다.

And our elders and all those living in our country said to us, 'Take provisions for your journey; go and meet them and say to them, "We are your servants; make a treaty with us." ' This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But now see how dry and moldy it is. And these wineskins that we filled were new, but see how cracked they are. And our clothes and sandals are worn out by the very long journey." The men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not inquire of the LORD. Then Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the assembly ratified it by oath. 그래서 우리 땅에 살고 있는 장로들과 모든 주민이 우리를 이리로 보냈습니다. 우리 기브온 주민은, 종이 될 각오가 되어 있다는 것을 말씀드리고, 우리와 평화조약을 맺어 달라고 하는 부탁을 하려고, 길에서 먹을 양식을 준비해 가지고 이렇게 왔습니다. 우리가 가져 온 이 빵을 보십시오, 우리가 이리로 오려고 길을 떠나던 날, 집에서 이 빵을 쌀 때만 하더라도 이 빵은 따뜻하였습니다. 그러나 보십시오, 지금은 말랐고, 곰팡이가 났습니다. 우리가 포도주를 담은 이 가죽부대도 본래는 새것이었습니다. 그런데 보십시오, 낡아서 찢어졌습니다. 우리의 옷과 신도 먼 길을 오는 동안 이렇게 낡아서 해어졌습니다." 이스라엘 사람들은, 어떻게 해야 할지를 주님께 묻지도 않은 채, 그들이 가져 온 양식을 넘겨받았다. 여호수아는 그들과 화친하여, 그들을 살려 준다는 조약을 맺고, 회중의 지도자들은 그 조약을 지키기로 엄숙히 맹세하였다.

Three days after they made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites heard that they were neighbors, living near them. So the Israelites set out and on the third day came to their cities: Gibeon, Kephirah, Beeroth and Kiriath Jearim. But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the assembly had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. The whole assembly grumbled against the leaders, but all the leaders answered, "We have given them our oath by the LORD, the God of Israel, and we cannot touch them now. This is what we will do to them: We will let them live, so that wrath will not fall on us for breaking the oath we swore to them." 이스라엘 사람들은, 그들과 조약을 맺은 지 사흘이 지난 뒤에, 자기들과 조약을 맺은 사람들이 가까운 이웃이고, 자기들 가까이에서 사는 사람들임을 알게 되었다. 이스라엘 자손은 그리로 가서 보려고 길을 떠났는데, 겨우 사흘 만에 자기들과 조약을 맺은 사람들이 살고 있는 여러 성읍에 이르렀다. 그들이 살고 있는 성읍은 기브온과 그비라와 브에롯과 기럇여아림이었다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은, 회중의 지도자들이 주 이스라엘의 하나님의 이름을 두고 조약을 지키기로 그들에게 맹세하였기 때문에, 그들을 칠 수 없었다. 그래서 온 회중이 지도자들을 원망하였다. 그러나 모든 지도자들이 온 회중에게 말하였다. "우리가 주 이스라엘 하나님의 이름을 두고 그들에게 맹세하였으므로, 그들을 해칠 수 없습니다. 우리가 그들에게 할 일이라고는, 그들을 살려 두어서, 우리가 그들에게 맹세한 맹세 때문에 받게 될 진노가 우리에게 내리지 않게 하는 것뿐입니다.

They continued, "Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the entire community." So the leaders' promise to them was kept. Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said, "Why did you deceive us by saying, 'We live a long way from you,' while actually you live near us? You are now under a curse: You will never cease to serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God." They answered Joshua, "Your servants were clearly told how the LORD your God had commanded his servant Moses to give you the whole land and to wipe out all its inhabitants from before you. So we feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we did this. We are now in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you." 그러나 비록 그들을 살려 둔다 하더라도, 우리 가운데서 나무 패는 자와 물 긷는 자로 살아가도록 그들을 제한할 것입니다." 지도자들이 이렇게 제안한 것을 회중이 받아들였다. 여호수아가 그들을 불러다가 말하였다. "당신들은 우리 가까이에 살면서, 어찌하여 아주 멀리서 왔다고 말하여 우리를 속였소? 당신들이 이렇게 우리를 속였기 때문에, 당신들은 저주를 받아서, 영원히 종이 되어, 우리 하나님의 집에서 나무를 패고 물을 긷는 일을 하게 될 것이오." 그들이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. "우리가 그렇게 속일 수밖에 없었던 까닭은, 주 하나님이 그의 종 모세에게 명하신 것이 참으로 사실임을 우리가 알았기 때문입니다. 하나님이 이 땅을 다 이스라엘 사람에게 주라고 명하셨고, 이스라엘 사람이 보는 앞에서 이 땅에 사는 모든 사람을 다 죽이라고 명하셨다는 것을, 우리가 들어서 알았습니다. 우리가 속임수를 쓸 수밖에 없었던 것은, 우리가 이스라엘 사람 때문에 목숨을 잃을까 두려워하였기 때문입니다. 이제 우리를 마음대로 하실 수 있으니, 처분만을 기다리겠습니다."

So Joshua saved them from the Israelites, and they did not kill them. That day he made the Gibeonites woodcutters and water carriers for the community and for the altar of the LORD at the place the LORD would choose. And that is what they are to this day. 여호수아는 그들을 보호하기로 결정을 내리고, 이스라엘 사람들이 그들을 죽이지 못하게 하였다. 바로 그 날로 여호수아는 그들을, 회중을 섬기고 주님의 제단을 돌보는 종으로 삼아, 나무를 패고 물을 긷는 일을 맡게 하였다. 그들은 오늘까지 주님께서 택하신 곳에서 그 일을 하고 있다.
