여호수아 7장

 

But the Israelites acted unfaithfully in regard to the devoted things ; Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of them. So the LORD's anger burned against Israel. Now Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth Aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, "Go up and spy out the region." So the men went up and spied out Ai. When they returned to Joshua, they said, "Not all the people will have to go up against Ai. Send two or three thousand men to take it and do not weary all the people, for only a few men are there." So about three thousand men went up; but they were routed by the men of Ai, who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted and became like water. 이스라엘 자손이, 전멸시켜서 주님께 바쳐야 할 물건을 잘못 다루었다. 유다 지파에서, 세라의 증손이요 삽디의 손자요 갈미의 아들인 아간이, 전멸시켜서 주님께 바쳐야 할 물건을 가져 갔기 때문에, 주님께서 이스라엘 자손들에게 진노하셨다. 여호수아가 여리고에서 베델 동쪽 벳아웬 곁에 있는 아이 성으로 사람들을 보내면서, 그들에게 올라가서 그 땅을 정탐하라고 지시하니, 그 사람들이 올라가서 아이 성을 정탐하였다. 그들이 여호수아에게 돌아와서 이렇게 말하였다. "모든 백성을 다 올라가게 할 필요가 없을 것 같습니다. 이천 명이나 삼천 명만 올라가도 아이 성을 칠 수 있습니다. 모든 백성이 그 성을 치느라고 다 수고할 필요가 없을 것 같습니다. 성 안에 있는 사람들의 수가 얼마 되지 않습니다." 백성 가운데서 약 삼천 명이 그리로 올라갔다. 그러나 그들은 도리어 아이 성 사람에게 패하여 도망쳐 왔다. 아이 성 사람은 이스라엘 사람을 서른여섯 명쯤 죽이고, 성문 앞에서부터 스바림까지 추격하여 비탈길에서 그들을 쳤으므로, 백성의 간담이 서늘해졌다.

Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown to the ground before the ark of the LORD, remaining there till evening. The elders of Israel did the same, and sprinkled dust on their heads. And Joshua said, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, why did you ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan! O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has been routed by its enemies? The Canaanites and the other people of the country will hear about this and they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. What then will you do for your own great name?" The LORD said to Joshua, "Stand up! What are you doing down on your face? 여호수아는 슬퍼하면서 옷을 찢고, 주님의 궤 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려서 저녁때까지 있었다. 이스라엘의 장로들도 그를 따라 슬픔에 젖어, 머리에 먼지를 뒤집어썼다. 여호수아가 아뢰었다. "주 하나님, 우리 백성을 요단 강 서쪽으로 잘 건너게 하시고는, 왜 우리를 아모리 사람의 손에 넘기어 멸망시키려 하십니까? 차라리 우리가 요단 강 동쪽에서 그대로 살았더라면 좋을 뻔하였습니다. 주님, 이스라엘이 원수 앞에서 패하여 되돌아왔으니, 이제 제가 무슨 말을 할 수 있겠습니까? 가나안 사람과 그 땅에 사는 모든 주민이 이 소식을 듣고 우리를 에워싸고, 이 땅에서 우리의 이름을 없애 버릴 터인데, 주님께서는 주님의 위대한 명성을 어떻게 지키시겠습니까?" 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "일어나거라. 어찌하여 이렇게 엎드려 있느냐?

Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction. "Go, consecrate the people. Tell them, 'Consecrate yourselves in preparation for tomorrow; for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: That which is devoted is among you, O Israel. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove it. " 'In the morning, present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe that the LORD takes shall come forward clan by clan; the clan that the LORD takes shall come forward family by family; and the family that the LORD takes shall come forward man by man. He who is caught with the devoted things shall be destroyed by fire, along with all that belongs to him. He has violated the covenant of the LORD and has done a disgraceful thing in Israel!' " 이스라엘이 죄를 지었다. 나와 맺은 언약, 지키라고 명령한 그 언약을 그들이 어겼고, 전멸시켜서 나 주에게 바쳐야 할 물건을 도둑질하여 가져 갔으며, 또한 거짓말을 하면서 그 물건을 자기들의 재산으로 만들었다. 그래서 이스라엘 자손은 원수를 대적할 수 없었고, 원수 앞에서 패하여 물러섰다. 그들이 자청하여 저주를 불러들여서, 그들 스스로가 전멸시켜야 할 물건이 되었기 때문이다. 너희들 가운데에서 전멸시켜 나 주에게 바쳐야 할 물건을 없애지 아니하면, 내가 다시는 너희와 함께 있지 않겠다. 일어나서 백성을 성결하게 하여라. 너는 그들에게 말하여라. '너희는 스스로 성결하게 하여, 내일을 맞이할 준비를 하여라. 주 이스라엘의 하나님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. 이스라엘아, 너희 가운데 전멸시켜서 주님께 바쳐야 할 물건이 있다. 그것을 너희 가운데서 제거하기 전에는, 너희의 원수를 너희가 대적할 수 없다. 너희는 아침에 지파별로 나오너라. 주님께서 주사위로 뽑으신 지파는 가문별로 가까이 나오고, 주님께서 주사위로 뽑으신 가문은 집안별로 가까이 나오고, 또한 주님께서 주사위로 뽑으신 집안은 장정별로 가까이 나오너라. 전멸시켜서 주님께 바쳐야 할 물건을 가져 간 사람이 주사위로 뽑히면, 그에게 딸린 모든 것과 함께 그를 불에 태우겠다. 그가 주님의 언약을 어기고, 이스라엘에서 수치스러운 일을 저질렀기 때문이다.'"

Early the next morning Joshua had Israel come forward by tribes, and Judah was taken. The clans of Judah came forward, and he took the Zerahites. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward by families, and Zimri was taken. Joshua had his family come forward man by man, and Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zimri, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was taken. Then Joshua said to Achan, "My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give him the praise. Tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me." Achan replied, "It is true! I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I have done: 여호수아가 아침 일찍 일어나서 이스라엘 백성을 그 지파별로 나오게 하였더니, 유다 지파가 뽑혔다. 유다 지파를 가문별로 나오게 하였더니 세라의 가문이 뽑혔고, 세라의 가문에서 장정들을 나오게 하였더니 삽디가 뽑혔다. 삽디의 집안의 장정들을 차례대로 나오게 하였더니 유다 지파에서 세라의 증손이요 삽디의 손자요 갈미의 아들인 아간이 뽑혔다. 여호수아가 아간에게 말하였다. "나의 아들아, 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 영광을 돌리고, 그에게 사실대로 고백하여라. 네가 무엇을 하였는지 숨기지 말고 나에게 말하여라." 아간이 여호수아에게 대답하였다. "제가 진실로 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 죄를 지었습니다. 제가 저지른 일을 말씀드리겠습니다.

When I saw in the plunder a beautiful robe from Babylonia, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath." So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent, and there it was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath. They took the things from the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites and spread them out before the LORD. Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold wedge, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor. Joshua said, "Why have you brought this trouble on us? The LORD will bring trouble on you today." "너는 어찌하여 우리를 괴롭게 하느냐? 오늘 주님께서 너를 괴롭히실 것이다." 그러자 온 이스라엘 백성이 그를 돌로 쳐서 죽이고, 남은 가족과 재산도 모두 돌로 치고 불살랐다.

Over Achan they heaped up a large pile of rocks, which remains to this day. Then the LORD turned from his fierce anger. Therefore that place has been called the Valley of Achor ever since. 그들은 그 위에 큰 돌무더기를 쌓았는데, 그것이 오늘까지 있다. 이렇게 하고 나서야 주님께서 맹렬한 진노를 거두셨다. 그래서 그 곳 이름을 오늘까지도 아골 골짜기라고 부른다.
