여호수아 5장

Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan before the Israelites until we had crossed over, their hearts melted and they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites. At that time the LORD said to Joshua, "Make flint knives and circumcise the Israelites again." So Joshua made flint knives and circumcised the Israelites at Gibeath Haaraloth. Now this is why he did so: All those who came out of Egypt--all the men of military age--died in the desert on the way after leaving Egypt. All the people that came out had been circumcised, but all the people born in the desert during the journey from Egypt had not. 요단 강 서쪽에 있는 아모리 사람의 모든 왕과, 해변에 있는 가나안 사람의 모든 왕이, 주님께서 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 그들이 요단 강을 다 건널 때까지 그 강물을 말리셨다는 소식을 듣고 간담이 서늘했고, 이스라엘 자손 앞에서 아주 용기를 잃고 말았다. 그 때에 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 돌칼을 만들어, 이스라엘 자손에게 다시 할례를 베풀어라." 그래서 여호수아는 돌칼을 만들어 기브앗 하아라롯 산에서 이스라엘 자손에게 할례를 베풀었다. 여호수아가 할례를 베푼 데는 이런 이유가 있었다. 이집트에서 나온 모든 백성 가운데서 남자 곧 전투할 수 있는 모든 군인은, 이집트를 떠난 다음에 광야를 지나는 동안에 다 죽었다. 그 때에 나온 백성은 모두 할례를 받았으나, 이집트에서 나온 다음에 광야를 지나는 동안에 태어난 사람은 아무도 할례를 받지 못하였다.

The Israelites had moved about in the desert forty years until all the men who were of military age when they left Egypt had died, since they had not obeyed the LORD. For the LORD had sworn to them that they would not see the land that he had solemnly promised their fathers to give us, a land flowing with milk and honey. So he raised up their sons in their place, and these were the ones Joshua circumcised. They were still uncircumcised because they had not been circumcised on the way. And after the whole nation had been circumcised, they remained where they were in camp until they were healed. Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 이집트를 떠날 때에 징집 연령에 해당하던 남자들은, 사십 년을 광야에서 헤매는 동안에 그 광야에서 다 죽고 말았다. 주님께서는, 우리에게 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 땅을 주시겠다고 우리의 조상에게 맹세하셨지만, 이집트를 떠난 조상이 주님의 말씀을 순종하지 않았기 때문에, 그들이 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 그 땅을 볼 수 없게 하겠다고 맹세하셨다. 그들을 대신하여 자손을 일으켜 주셔서, 여호수아가 그들에게 할례를 베풀었는데, 그것은, 광야를 지나는 동안에 그들에게 할례를 베풀지 않아서, 그들이 무할례자가 되었기 때문이다. 백성이 모두 할례를 받고 나서 다 낫기까지 진 안에 머물러 있었다. 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "너희가 이집트에서 받은 수치를, 오늘 내가 없애 버렸다." 그리하여 그 곳 이름을 오늘까지 길갈이라고 한다. 이스라엘 자손은 길갈에 진을 치고, 그 달 열나흗날 저녁에 여리고 근방 평야에서 유월절을 지켰다.

The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate of the produce of Canaan. Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him and asked, "Are you for us or for our enemies?" "Neither," he replied, "but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come." Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, and asked him, "What message does my Lord have for his servant?" The commander of the LORD's army replied, "Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy." "너는 우리 편이냐? 우리의 원수 편이냐?" 그가 대답하였다. "아니다. 나는 주님의 군사령관으로 여기에 왔다." 그러자 여호수아는 얼굴을 땅에 대고 절을 한 다음에 그에게 물었다. "사령관님께서 이 부하에게 무슨 말씀을 하시렵니까?" 주님의 군대 사령관이 여호수아에게 말하였다. "네가 서 있는 곳은 거룩한 곳이니, 너의 발에서 신을 벗어라." 여호수아가 그대로 하였다.
