여호수아 4장

When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD said to Joshua, "Choose twelve men from among the people, one from each tribe, and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan from right where the priests stood and to carry them over with you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight." So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from the Israelites, one from each tribe, and said to them, "Go over before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, 온 백성이 모두 요단 강을 건넜을 때에, 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 백성 가운데서 각 지파마다 한 사람씩 열두 사람을 뽑아서 세워라. 그리고 그들에게, 제사장들의 발이 굳게 선 그 곳 요단 강 가운데서 돌 열두 개를 가져다가, 오늘 밤 그들이 머무를 곳에 두라고 하여라." 여호수아는 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 각 지파마다 한 사람씩 세운 그 열두 사람을 불러서, 그들에게 말하였다. "주 당신들 하나님의 언약궤 앞을 지나 요단 강 가운데까지 들어가서, 이스라엘 자손의 지파 수대로 돌 하나씩을 각자의 어깨에 메고 오십시오.

to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them that the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD. When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever." So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the tribes of the Israelites, as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them over with them to their camp, where they put them down. Joshua set up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot where the priests who carried the ark of the covenant had stood. And they are there to this day. Now the priests who carried the ark remained standing in the middle of the Jordan until everything the LORD had commanded Joshua was done by the people, just as Moses had directed Joshua. The people hurried over, 이것이 당신들에게 기념물이 될 것입니다. 훗날 당신들 자손이 그 돌들이 지닌 뜻이 무엇인지를 물을 때에, 주님의 언약궤 앞에서 요단 강 물이 끊기었다는 것과, 언약궤가 요단 강을 지날 때에 요단 강 물이 끊기었으므로 그 돌들이 이스라엘 자손에게 영원토록 기념물이 된다는 것을, 그들에게 말해 주십시오." 그래서 이스라엘 자손은 여호수아가 명령한 대로 하였다. 그들은 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하신 대로, 이스라엘 자손의 지파 수에 따라 요단 강 가운데서 돌 열두 개를 메고 나와서, 그것들을 그들이 머무르려는 곳까지 가져다가 그 곳에 내려놓았다. 여호수아는 요단 강 가운데, 언약궤를 메었던 제사장들의 발이 머물렀던 곳에 다른 열두 개의 돌을 세웠다. （그 돌들이 오늘까지 거기에 있다.） 주님께서 여호수아를 시켜 백성에게 명령하신 일 곧 모세가 여호수아에게 지시한 일이 그대로 다 이루어지기까지, 궤를 멘 제사장들이 요단 강 가운데 서 있었다. 백성은 서둘러 강을 건넜다.

and as soon as all of them had crossed, the ark of the LORD and the priests came to the other side while the people watched. The men of Reuben, Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh crossed over, armed, in front of the Israelites, as Moses had directed them. About forty thousand armed for battle crossed over before the LORD to the plains of Jericho for war. That day the LORD exalted Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they revered him all the days of his life, just as they had revered Moses. Then the LORD said to Joshua, 백성이 모두 건너기를 마치자, 주님의 궤와 그 궤를 멘 제사장들이 백성이 보는 앞에서 건넜다. 르우벤 자손과 갓 자손과 므낫세의 반쪽 지파는, 모세가 그들에게 지시한 대로 이스라엘 자손보다 앞서서 무장하고 건넜다. 약 사만 명이 되는 이들은 무장을 하고, 주님 앞에서 전투를 벌이려고 여리고 평원으로 건너갔다. 그 날 주님께서, 온 이스라엘 백성이 보는 앞에서 여호수아를 위대한 지도자로 세우셨으므로, 그들은, 모세가 살아 있는 동안 모세를 두려워하였던 것처럼, 여호수아를 두려워하였다. 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다.

"Command the priests carrying the ark of the Testimony to come up out of the Jordan." So Joshua commanded the priests, "Come up out of the Jordan." And the priests came up out of the river carrying the ark of the covenant of the LORD. No sooner had they set their feet on the dry ground than the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and ran at flood stage as before. On the tenth day of the first month the people went up from the Jordan and camped at Gilgal on the eastern border of Jericho. And Joshua set up at Gilgal the twelve stones they had taken out of the Jordan. "증거궤를 메고 있는 제사장들에게 명령하여 요단 강에서 올라오게 하여라." 그래서 여호수아가 제사장들에게 요단 강에서 올라오라고 명령을 내렸다. 주님의 언약궤를 멘 제사장들이 요단 강 가운데서 올라와서 제사장들의 발바닥이 마른 땅을 밟는 순간, 요단 강 물이 다시 원래대로 흘러 전과 같이 강둑에 넘쳤다. 백성이 첫째 달 열흘에 요단 강을 건너 여리고 동쪽 변두리 길갈에 진을 쳤다. 여호수아는 요단 강에서 가져 온 돌 열두 개를 길갈에 세우고

He said to the Israelites, "In the future when your descendants ask their fathers, 'What do these stones mean?' tell them, 'Israel crossed the Jordan on dry ground.' For the LORD your God dried up the Jordan before you until you had crossed over. The LORD your God did to the Jordan just what he had done to the Red Sea when he dried it up before us until we had crossed over. He did this so that all the peoples of the earth might know that the hand of the LORD is powerful and so that you might always fear the LORD your God." 이스라엘 자손에게 이렇게 말하였다. "당신들 자손이 훗날 그 아버지들에게 이 돌들의 뜻이 무엇인지를 묻거든, 당신들은 자손에게 이렇게 알려 주십시오. '이스라엘 백성이 이 요단 강을 마른 땅으로 건넜다. 우리가 홍해를 다 건널 때까지, 주 우리의 하나님이 우리 앞에서 그것을 마르게 하신 것과 같이, 우리가 요단 강을 다 건널 때까지, 주 우리의 하나님이 요단 강 물을 마르게 하셨다. 그렇게 하신 것은, 땅의 모든 백성이 주님의 능력이 얼마나 강하신가를 알도록 하고, 우리가 영원토록 주 우리의 하나님을 경외하도록 하려는 것이다.'"
