여호수아 3장

 

 

Early in the morning Joshua and all the Israelites set out from Shittim and went to the Jordan, where they camped before crossing over. After three days the officers went throughout the camp, giving orders to the people: "When you see the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, and the priests, who are Levites, carrying it, you are to move out from your positions and follow it. Then you will know which way to go, since you have never been this way before. But keep a distance of about a thousand yards between you and the ark; do not go near it." Joshua told the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD will do amazing things among you." 여호수아는 아침 일찍 일어나, 모든 이스라엘 자손과 함께 싯딤을 떠나 요단 강까지 왔다. 그들은 강을 건너기 전에 그 곳에 진을 쳤다. 사흘 뒤에 지휘관들이 진을 두루 다니며, 백성에게 명령하였다. "당신들은, 레위 사람 제사장들이 주 당신들 하나님의 언약궤를 들어서 메는 것을 보거든, 진을 철수하여 제사장들의 뒤를 따르시오. 당신들이 이전에 가 보지 않았던 길을 가기 때문에, 제사장들이 당신들이 가는 길을 안내할 것이오. 그러나 당신들과 언약궤 사이는, 이천 보쯤의 거리를 띄우고, 그 궤에 가까이 가지 마시오." 여호수아가 백성에게 말하였다. "당신들은 자신을 성결하게 하시오. 주님께서 내일 당신들 가운데서 놀라운 일을 이루실 것입니다."

Joshua said to the priests, "Take up the ark of the covenant and pass on ahead of the people." So they took it up and went ahead of them. And the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I will begin to exalt you in the eyes of all Israel, so they may know that I am with you as I was with Moses. Tell the priests who carry the ark of the covenant: 'When you reach the edge of the Jordan's waters, go and stand in the river.' " Joshua said to the Israelites, "Come here and listen to the words of the LORD your God. This is how you will know that the living God is among you and that he will certainly drive out before you the Canaanites, Hittites, Hivites, Perizzites, Girgashites, Amorites and Jebusites. 여호수아가 제사장들에게 언약궤를 메고 백성보다 앞서 건너가라고 명령하자, 그들은 언약궤를 메고 백성들 앞에서 나아갔다. 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "바로 오늘부터 내가 너를 모든 이스라엘 사람이 보는 앞에서 위대한 지도자로 세우고, 내가 모세와 함께 있던 것처럼 너와 함께 있다는 사실을 그들이 알게 하겠다. 이제 너는 언약궤를 멘 제사장들에게, 요단 강의 물 가에 이르거든 요단 강에 들어가서 서 있으라고 하여라." 여호수아가 이스라엘 자손에게 말하였다. "이 곳으로 와서, 주 당신들 하나님의 말씀을 들으십시오." 여호수아가 말을 계속하였다. "이제 이루어질 이 일을 보고, 당신들은, 살아 계신 하나님이 당신들 가운데 계셔서, 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 히위 사람과 브리스 사람과 기르가스 사람과 아모리 사람과 여부스 사람을 당신들 앞에서 쫓아내신다는 것을 알게 될 것입니다.

See, the ark of the covenant of the Lord of all the earth will go into the Jordan ahead of you. Now then, choose twelve men from the tribes of Israel, one from each tribe. And as soon as the priests who carry the ark of the LORD -the Lord of all the earth--set foot in the Jordan, its waters flowing downstream will be cut off and stand up in a heap." So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan, the priests carrying the ark of the covenant went ahead of them. Now the Jordan is at flood stage all during harvest. Yet as soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water's edge, 온 땅의 주권자이신 주님의 언약궤가 당신들 앞에서 요단 강을 건널 것입니다. 이제 이스라엘의 각 지파마다 한 사람씩 열두 사람을 뽑으십시오. 온 땅의 주권자이신 주님의 궤를 멘 제사장들의 발바닥이 요단 강 물에 닿으면, 요단 강 물 곧 위에서부터 흘러 내리던 물줄기가 끊기고, 둑이 생기어 물이 고일 것입니다." 백성이 요단 강을 건너려고 자기들의 진을 떠날 때에, 언약궤를 멘 제사장들이 백성 앞에서 나아갔다. 그 궤를 멘 사람들이 요단 강까지 왔을 때에는, 마침 추수기간이어서 제방까지 물이 가득 차 올랐다. 그 궤를 멘 제사장들의 발이 요단 물 가에 닿았을 때에,

the water from upstream stopped flowing. It piled up in a heap a great distance away, at a town called Adam in the vicinity of Zarethan, while the water flowing down to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea ) was completely cut off. So the people crossed over opposite Jericho. The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, while all Israel passed by until the whole nation had completed the crossing on dry ground. 위에서부터 흐르던 물이 멈추었다. 그리고 멀리 사르단 근처의 아담 성읍에 둑이 생겨, 아라바의 바다 곧 사해로 흘러가는 물줄기가 완전히 끊겼다. 그래서 백성들은 여리고 맞은쪽으로 건너갈 수 있었다. 온 이스라엘 백성이 마른 땅을 밟고 건너서, 온 백성이 모두 요단 강을 건널 때까지, 주님의 언약궤를 멘 제사장들은 요단 강 가운데의 마른 땅 위에 튼튼하게 서 있었다.
