Then all the people of Judah took Uzziah, who was sixteen years old, and made him king in place of his father Amaziah. He was the one who rebuilt Elath and restored it to Judah after Amaziah rested with his fathers. Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother's name was Jecoliah; she was from Jerusalem. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father Amaziah had done. He sought God during the days of Zechariah, who instructed him in the fear of God. As long as he sought the LORD, God gave him success. 유다의 온 백성은 웃시야를 왕으로 삼아, 그의 아버지 아마샤의 뒤를 잇게 하였다. 그가 왕이 되었을 때에, 그는 열여섯 살이었다. 아마샤 왕이 죽은 뒤에, 웃시야는 엘랏을 재건하여 유다에 귀속시켰다. 웃시야가 왕이 되었을 때에, 그는 열여섯 살이었다. 그는 예루살렘에서 쉰두 해 동안 다스렸다. 그의 어머니 여골리아는, 예루살렘 태생이다. 그는 자기의 아버지 아마샤가 한 모든 일을 본받아서, 주님께서 보시기에 올바른 일을 하였다. 그의 곁에는 하나님을 경외하도록 가르쳐 주는 스가랴가 있었는데, 스가랴가 살아 있는 동안, 웃시야는 하나님의 뜻을 찾았다. 그가 주님의 뜻을 찾는 동안은, 하나님께서 그가 하는 일마다 잘 되게 하여 주셨다.

He went to war against the Philistines and broke down the walls of Gath, Jabneh and Ashdod. He then rebuilt towns near Ashdod and elsewhere among the Philistines. God helped him against the Philistines and against the Arabs who lived in Gur Baal and against the Meunites. The Ammonites brought tribute to Uzziah, and his fame spread as far as the border of Egypt, because he had become very powerful. Uzziah built towers in Jerusalem at the Corner Gate, at the Valley Gate and at the angle of the wall, and he fortified them. He also built towers in the desert and dug many cisterns, because he had much livestock in the foothills and in the plain. He had people working his fields and vineyards in the hills and in the fertile lands, for he loved the soil. 웃시야가 전쟁을 일으켜 블레셋과 싸우고, 가드 성과 야브네 성과 아스돗 성의 성벽들을 헐고, 아스돗 땅과 블레셋 지역 안에 성읍들을 세웠다. 그는 하나님의 도움을 받아서, 블레셋 사람과 구르바알에 사는 아라비아 사람과 마온 사람을 쳤다. 암몬 사람이 웃시야에게 조공을 바쳤다. 웃시야가 매우 강하게 되었으므로, 그의 이름이 저 멀리 이집트 땅에까지 퍼졌다. 웃시야는 예루살렘의 '성 모퉁이 문'과 '골짜기 문'과 '성 굽이', 이 세 곳에 망대를 세우고, 그 곳을 요새로 만들었다. 그에게는 기르는 가축이 많았다. 언덕 지대와 평지에는 농부들을 배치시켰고, 산간지방에는 포도원을 가꾸는 농부도 두었다. 그는 농사를 좋아하여서 벌판에도 곳곳에 망대를 세우고, 여러 곳에 물웅덩이도 팠다.

Uzziah had a well-trained army, ready to go out by divisions according to their numbers as mustered by Jeiel the secretary and Maaseiah the officer under the direction of Hananiah, one of the royal officials. The total number of family leaders over the fighting men was 2,600. Under their command was an army of 307,500 men trained for war, a powerful force to support the king against his enemies. Uzziah provided shields, spears, helmets, coats of armor, bows and slingstones for the entire army. In Jerusalem he made machines designed by skillful men for use on the towers and on the corner defenses to shoot arrows and hurl large stones. His fame spread far and wide, for he was greatly helped until he became powerful. 웃시야에게는, 언제든지 나가서 싸울 수 있는 큰 규모의 군대가 있었다. 여이엘 병적 기록관과 마아세야 병무담당 비서관이 이들을 징집하여 병적에 올렸다. 이 두 사람은 왕의 직속 지휘관 가운데 한 사람인 하나냐의 지휘를 맡았다. 그 군대에는 이천육백 명의 장교가 있고, 그들의 밑에도, 왕의 명령이 떨어지면 언제라도 대적과 싸워 이길 수 있는 삼십만 칠천오백 명의 군인들이 있었다. 웃시야는 이 군대를 방패와 창과 투구와 갑옷과 활과 무릿매로 무장시켰다. 예루살렘에는 무기제조 기술자들을 두어 새로운 무기를 고안하여 만들게 하였으니, 그 무기는 망대와 성곽 모서리 위에 설치하여 활과 큰 돌을 쏘아 날리는 것이었다. 그의 명성이 사방으로 퍼졌고, 하나님께서 그를 도우셨으므로, 그는 매우 강한 왕이 되었다.

But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the LORD his God, and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense. Azariah the priest with eighty other courageous priests of the LORD followed him in. They confronted him and said, "It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the LORD. That is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honored by the LORD God." Uzziah, who had a censer in his hand ready to burn incense, became angry. While he was raging at the priests in their presence before the incense altar in the LORD's temple, leprosy broke out on his forehead. When Azariah the chief priest and all the other priests looked at him, they saw that he had leprosy on his forehead, so they hurried him out. Indeed, he himself was eager to leave, because the LORD had afflicted him. 웃시야 왕은 힘이 세어지면서 교만하게 되더니, 드디어 악한 일을 저지르고 말았다. 주님의 성전 안에 있는 분향단에다가 분향을 하려고 그리로 들어간 것이다. 이것은 주 하나님께 죄를 짓는 일이었다. 아사랴 제사장이, 용감하고 힘이 센 주님의 제사장 팔십 명을 데리고 왕의 뒤를 따라 들어가면서, 웃시야 왕을 말렸다. 제사장들이 외쳤다. "웃시야 임금님께서는 들으십시오. 주님께 분향하는 일은 왕이 할 일이 아닙니다. 분향하는 일은, 이 직무를 수행하도록 거룩하게 구별된 제사장들, 곧 아론의 혈통을 이어받은 제사장들만이 할 수 있는 일입니다. 이 거룩한 곳에서 어서 물러나시기 바랍니다. 왕이 범죄하였으니 주 하나님께 높임을 받지 못할 것입니다." 웃시야는 성전 안 분향단 옆에 서서 향로를 들고 막 분향하려다가 이 말을 듣고 화를 냈다. 그가 제사장들에게 화를 낼 때에 그의 이마에 나병이 생겼다. 아사랴 대제사장과 다른 제사장들이 그를 살펴보고 그의 이마에 나병이 생긴 것을 확인하고, 그를 곧 그 곳에서 쫓아냈다. 주님께서 웃시야를 재앙으로 치셨으므로 그는 급히 나갔다.

King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in a separate house --leprous, and excluded from the temple of the LORD. Jotham his son had charge of the palace and governed the people of the land. The other events of Uzziah's reign, from beginning to end, are recorded by the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. Uzziah rested with his fathers and was buried near them in a field for burial that belonged to the kings, for people said, "He had leprosy." And Jotham his son succeeded him as king. 그는 죽는 날까지 나병을 앓았다. 주님의 성전을 출입하는 것도 허용되지 않았으므로, 나병환자인 그는 별궁에 격리되어 여생을 보냈다. 왕자 요담이 왕실을 관리하며 나라의 백성을 다스렸다. 웃시야의 통치 기간에 있었던 다른 사건들은, 초기의 것에서부터 후대의 것에 이르기까지, 아모스의 아들 예언자 이사야가 기록하여 두었다. 웃시야가 죽어서 그의 조상과 함께 잠드니, 그가 나병환자였다고 해서, 왕실 묘지에 장사하지 않고, 왕가에 속한 변두리 땅에 장사하였다. 왕자 요담이 아버지의 뒤를 이어서 왕이 되었다.
