In the course of time, Nahash king of the Ammonites died, and his son succeeded him as king. David thought, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, because his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David's men came to Hanun in the land of the Ammonites to express sympathy to him, the Ammonite nobles said to Hanun, "Do you think David is honoring your father by sending men to you to express sympathy? Haven't his men come to you to explore and spy out the country and overthrow it?" So Hanun seized David's men, shaved them, cut off their garments in the middle at the buttocks, and sent them away. When someone came and told David about the men, he sent messengers to meet them, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, "Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back." 그 뒤에 암몬 사람의 왕 나하스가 죽고, 그 아들이 뒤를 이어 왕이 되었다. 다윗은 "하눈의 아버지 나하스가 나에게 은혜를 베풀었으니, 나도 나하스의 아들 하눈에게 은혜를 베풀어야겠다" 하고 말하며, 신하들을 보내어, 고인에게 조의를 표하게 하였다. 그래서 다윗의 신하들이 하눈을 조문하러 암몬 사람의 땅에 이르렀다. 그러나 암몬 사람의 대신들이 하눈에게 말하였다. "다윗이 임금님께 조문 사절을 보낸 것이 임금님의 부친을 존경하기 때문이라고 생각하십니까? 오히려 이 땅을 두루 살펴서 함락시키려고, 그의 신하들이 정탐하러 온 것이 아닙니까?" 그래서 하눈은 다윗의 신하들을 붙잡아, 그들의 수염을 깎고, 입은 옷 가운데를 도려내어, 양쪽 엉덩이가 드러나게 해서 돌려보냈다. 조문 사절이 그 곳을 떠나자, 사람들이, 조문 사절이 당한 일을 다윗에게 알렸다. 조문 사절이 너무나도 수치스러운 일을 당하였으므로, 다윗 왕은 사람을 보내어 그들을 맞으며, 수염이 다시 자랄 때까지 여리고에 머물러 있다가, 수염이 다 자란 다음에 돌아오라고 하였다.

When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench in David's nostrils, Hanun and the Ammonites sent a thousand talents of silver to hire chariots and charioteers from Aram Naharaim, Aram Maacah and Zobah. They hired thirty-two thousand chariots and charioteers, as well as the king of Maacah with his troops, who came and camped near Medeba, while the Ammonites were mustered from their towns and moved out for battle. On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men. The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city, while the kings who had come were by themselves in the open country. Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. 암몬 사람들은 자기들이 다윗에게 미움받을 짓을 한 것을 알았다. 하눈과 암몬 사람들은 나하라임의 시리아 사람과 마아가의 시리아 사람과 소바에게서 병거와 기마병을 고용하려고, 그들에게 은 천 달란트를 보냈다. 그래서 그들은 병거 삼만 이천 대를 빌리고, 마아가 왕과 그의 군대를 고용하였다. 그들은 와서 메드바 앞에 진을 쳤다. 암몬 사람도 그들의 여러 성읍에서 모여들어서, 싸울 준비를 하였다. 다윗은 이 소식을 듣고, 요압에게 전투부대를 맡겨서 출동시켰다. 암몬 사람도 나와서 성문 앞에서 전열을 갖추었으며, 도우러 온 왕들도 각각 들녘에서 전열을 갖추었다. 요압은 적의 전열이 자기 부대의 앞뒤에서 포진한 것을 보고, 이스라엘의 모든 정예병 가운데서 더 엄격하게 정예병을 뽑아, 시리아 군대와 싸울 수 있도록 전열을 갖추었다.

He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother, and they were deployed against the Ammonites. Joab said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to rescue me; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will rescue you. Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight." Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans were fleeing, they too fled before his brother Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab went back to Jerusalem. 남은 병력은 자기의 아우 아비새에게 맡겨, 암몬 군대와 싸우도록 전열을 갖추게 하고서, 이렇게 말하였다. "시리아 군대가 나보다 강하면, 네가 와서 나를 도와라. 그러나 암몬 군대가 너보다 더 강하면 내가 너를 돕겠다. 용기를 내어라. 용감하게 싸워서 우리가 우리 민족을 지키고, 우리 하나님의 성읍을 지키자. 주님께서 좋게 여기시는 대로 이루어 주실 것이다." 그런 다음에, 요압이 그의 부대를 거느리고, 싸우려고 시리아 군대 앞으로 나아가니, 시리아 군인들이 요압 앞에서 도망하여 버렸다. 암몬 군인들은 시리아 군인들이 도망하는 것을 보고서, 그들도 요압의 아우 아비새 앞에서 도망하여, 성으로 들어가 버렸다. 그래서 요압은 예루살렘으로 돌아갔다.

After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they sent messengers and had Arameans brought from beyond the River, with Shophach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them. When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel and crossed the Jordan; he advanced against them and formed his battle lines opposite them. David formed his lines to meet the Arameans in battle, and they fought against him. But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven thousand of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also killed Shophach the commander of their army. When the vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with David and became subject to him. So the Arameans were not willing to help the Ammonites anymore. 시리아 군인들은, 자기들이 이스라엘에게 패한 것을 알고서, 전령을 보내어 유프라테스 강 동쪽에 있는 시리아 군대를 동원시켰다. 하닷에셀의 부하 소박 사령관이 그들을 지휘하였다. 다윗이 이 소식을 듣고, 온 이스라엘 군대를 모아 거느리고, 요단 강을 건너서 그들이 있는 곳에 이르러, 그들을 향하여 전열을 갖추었다. 다윗이 시리아 사람들에 맞서 진을 치니, 그들이 다윗과 맞붙어 싸웠으나, 시리아는 이스라엘 앞에서 도망하고 말았다. 다윗은 시리아 병거를 모는 칠천 명과 보병 사만 명을 죽이고, 소박 사령관도 쳐서 죽였다. 하닷에셀의 부하들은 자기들이 이스라엘에게 패한 것을 알고서, 다윗과 화해한 뒤에, 그를 섬겼다. 그 뒤로는 시리아가 다시는 암몬 사람을 도우려 하지 않았다.
