열왕기상 18장

 

After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land." So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria, and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, who was in charge of his palace. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the LORD. While Jezebel was killing off the LORD's prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.) Ahab had said to Obadiah, "Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals." 많은 날이 흘러서, 삼 년이 되던 해에, 주님께서 엘리야에게 말씀하셨다. "가서, 아합을 만나거라. 내가 땅 위에 비를 내리겠다." 엘리야가 곧 아합을 만나러 갔다. 그 때에 사마리아에는 기근이 심하였다. 아합이 오바댜 궁내대신을 불렀다. 오바댜는 주 하나님을 깊이 경외하는 사람으로서, 이세벨이 주님의 예언자들을 학살할 때에, 예언자 백 명을 쉰 명씩 동굴에 숨기고서, 먹을 것과 물을 대준 사람이다. 아합이 오바댜에게 말하였다. "이 땅 곳곳으로 다 다니며, 물이 있을 만한 샘과 시내를 샅샅이 찾아 보도록 합시다. 어쩌다가 풀이 있는 곳을 찾으면, 말과 나귀를 살릴 수 있을 거요. 짐승들이 죽는 것을 이대로 보고 있을 수만은 없소."

So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another. As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, "Is it really you, my lord Elijah?" "Yes," he replied. "Go tell your master, 'Elijah is here.' " "What have I done wrong," asked Obadiah, "that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death? As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom claimed you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you. 왕과 오바댜는 물을 찾으려고, 전 국토를 둘로 나누어서, 한 쪽은 아합이 스스로 담당하고, 다른 한 쪽은 오바댜가 담당하여, 제각기 길을 나섰다. 오바댜가 길을 가고 있는데, 마침 엘리야가 그를 만나려고 오고 있었다. 오바댜가 엘리야를 알아 보고, 머리를 숙여서 인사를 하였다. "제가 무슨 죄를 지었기에, 저를 아합의 손에 넘겨 죽이려고 하십니까? 예언자께서 섬기시는 주 하나님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세합니다. 제 상전은 어른을 찾으려고, 모든 나라, 모든 왕국에 사람들을 풀어 놓았습니다. 그러나 그들이 돌아와서, 엘리야가 없다고 보고하면, 제 상전은, 그 나라와 왕국에게 어른을 정말 찾지 못하였다고, 맹세하게 하였습니다.

But now you tell me to go to my master and say, 'Elijah is here.' I don't know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn't find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshiped the LORD since my youth. Haven't you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD ? I hid a hundred of the LORD's prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water. And now you tell me to go to my master and say, 'Elijah is here.' He will kill me!" Elijah said, "As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today." 그런데 지금 어른께서는 저더러 가서, 어른께서 여기에 계시다고 말하라는 말씀이십니까? 제가 어른을 떠나가면, 주님의 영이 곧 어른을 제가 알지 못하는 곳으로 데려 가실 것입니다. 제가 가서, 아합에게 말하였다가, 그가 와서 어른을 찾지 못하면, 반드시 저를 죽일 것입니다. 어른의 종인 저는 어릴 때부터 주님을 경외하여 왔습니다. 이세벨이 주님의 예언자들을 학살할 때에 제가 한 일과, 제가 주님의 예언자 백 명을 쉰 명씩 동굴에 감추고 그들에게 먹을 것과 마실 것을 대준 일을, 어른께서는 듣지도 못하셨습니까? 그런데 지금 어른께서는, 저더러 가서, 저의 상전에게, 어른께서 여기 계시다고 말하라는 것입니까? 그러면 제 상전은 반드시 저를 죽일 것입니다." 그러자 엘리야가 말하였다. "내가 섬기는 만군의 주님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 나는 오늘 꼭 아합을 만날 것이오."

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. When he saw Elijah, he said to him, "Is that you, you troubler of Israel?" "I have not made trouble for Israel," Elijah replied. "But you and your father's family have. You have abandoned the LORD's commands and have followed the Baals. Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel's table." So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 오바댜가 아합에게로 가서, 이 사실을 알리니, 아합이 엘리야를 만나러 왔다. 아합은 엘리야를 만나서, 이렇게 말하였다. "그대가 바로 이스라엘을 괴롭히는 자요?" 엘리야가 대답하였다. Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him." But the people said nothing. Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the LORD's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. Get two bulls for us. Let them choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire--he is God." Then all the people said, "What you say is good." Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, "Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire." 그러자 엘리야가 그 모든 백성 앞에 나서서, 이렇게 말하였다. "여러분은 언제까지 양쪽에 다리를 걸치고 머뭇거리고 있을 것입니까? 주님이 하나님이면 주님을 따르고, 바알이 하나님이면 그를 따르십시오." 그러나 백성들은 한 마디도 그에게 대답하지 못하였다. 그래서 엘리야는 백성들에게 다시 이렇게 말하였다. So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "O Baal, answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. At noon Elijah began to taunt them. "Shout louder!" he said. "Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened." So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention. Then Elijah said to all the people, "Come here to me." They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which was in ruins. 그들은 가져 온 소 한 마리를 골라서 준비하여 놓은 뒤에, 아침부터 한낮이 될 때까지 "바알은 응답해 주십시오" 하면서 부르짖었다. 그러나 응답은 커녕, 아무런 소리도 없었다. 바알의 예언자들은 제단 주위를 돌면서, 춤을 추었다. 한낮이 되니, 엘리야가 그들을 조롱하면서 말하였다. Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, "Your name shall be Israel." With the stones he built an altar in the name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed. He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, "Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood." "Do it again," he said, and they did it again. "Do it a third time," he ordered, and they did it the third time. The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench. 그리고 엘리야는, 일찍이 주님께서 이스라엘이라고 이름을 고쳐 주신 야곱의 아들들의 지파 수대로, 열두 개의 돌을 모았다. 이 돌을 가지고 엘리야는 주님께 예배할 제단을 다시 쌓고, 제단 둘레에는 두 세아 정도의 곡식이 들어갈 수 있는 넓이의 도랑을 팠다. 그 다음에, 나뭇단을 쌓아 놓고, 소를 각을 떠서, 그 나뭇단 위에 올려 놓고, 물통 네 개에 물을 가득 채워다가, 제물과 나뭇단 위에 쏟으라고 하였다. 사람들이 그대로 하니, 엘리야가 한 번 더 그렇게 하라고 하였다. 그들이 그렇게 하니, 그는 또 그렇게 하라고 하였다. 그들이 세 번을 그렇게 하니, 물이 제단 주위로 넘쳐 흘러서, 그 옆 도랑에 가득 찼다.

At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: "O LORD, God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. Answer me, O LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, O LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again." Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, "The LORD -he is God! The LORD -he is God!" Then Elijah commanded them, "Seize the prophets of Baal. Don't let anyone get away!" They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there. 제사를 드릴 때가 되니, 엘리야 예언자가 앞으로 나서서, 이렇게 기도하였다. "그가 주 하나님이시다! 그가 주 하나님이시다!" 엘리야가 그들에게 말하였다. "바알의 예언자들을 잡아라. 한 사람도 도망가게 해서는 안 된다." 백성은 곧 그들을 사로잡았고, 엘리야는 그들을 데리고 기손 강 가로 내려가서, 거기에서 그들을 모두 죽였다.

And Elijah said to Ahab, "Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain." So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. "Go and look toward the sea," he told his servant. And he went up and looked. "There is nothing there," he said. Seven times Elijah said, "Go back." The seventh time the servant reported, "A cloud as small as a man's hand is rising from the sea." So Elijah said, "Go and tell Ahab, 'Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.' " Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. 엘리야가 아합에게 말하였다. "빗소리가 크게 들리니, 이제는 올라가셔서, 음식을 드십시오." 아합이 올라가서, 음식을 먹었다. 엘리야는 갈멜 산 꼭대기로 올라가서, 땅을 바라보며 몸을 굽히고, 그의 얼굴을 무릎 사이에 넣었다. 그리고는 그의 시종에게, 올라가서 바다쪽을 살펴 보라고 하였다. 시종은 올라가서 보고 와서, 아무것도 보이지 않는다고 말하였다. 엘리야가 다시 그의 시종에게, 일곱 번을 그렇게 더 다녀오라고 하였다. 일곱 번째가 되었을 때에, 그 시종은 마침내, 사람의 손바닥만한 작은 구름이 바다에서부터 떠올라 오고 있다고 말하였다. 그러자 엘리야는 아합에게 사람을 보내어서, 비가 와서 길이 막히기 전에 어서 병거를 갖추고 내려가라는 말을 전하라고 하였다. 그러는 동안에 이미 하늘은 짙은 구름으로 캄캄해지고, 바람이 일더니, 곧 큰 비가 퍼붓기 시작하였다. 아합은 곧 병거를 타고 이스르엘로 내려갔다.

The power of the LORD came upon Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel. 주님의 능력이 엘리야와 함께 하였기 때문에, 엘리야는 허리를 동여 매고, 아합을 앞질러서, 이스르엘 어귀에까지 달려갔다.
