열왕기상 17장

 

Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, "As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word." Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: "Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there." So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there. 길르앗의 디셉에 사는 디셉 사람 엘리야가 아합에게 말하였다. "내가 섬기는 주 이스라엘의 하나님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세합니다. 내가 다시 입을 열기까지 앞으로 몇 해 동안은, 비는 커녕 이슬 한 방울도 내리지 않을 것입니다." 주님께서 엘리야에게 말씀하셨다. "이 곳을 떠나서, 동쪽으로 가거라. 그리고 거기 요단 강 동쪽에 있는 그릿 시냇가에 숨어서 지내며, 그 시냇물을 마셔라. 내가 까마귀에게 명하여서, 네게 먹을 것을 날라다 주게 하겠다." 엘리야는 주님의 말씀대로 가서, 그대로 하였다. 그는 곧 가서, 요단 강 앞에 있는 그릿 시냇가에 머물렀다.

The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook. Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land. Then the word of the LORD came to him: "Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food." So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, "Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?" 까마귀들이 아침에도 빵과 고기를 그에게 가져다 주었고, 저녁에도 빵과 고기를 그에게 가져다 주었다. 그리고 물은 그 곳 시냇물을 마셨다. 그런데 그 땅에 비가 내리지 않으므로, 얼마 있지 않아서, 시냇물까지 말라 버렸다. 주님께서 엘리야에게 말씀하셨다. "이제 너는, 시돈에 있는 사르밧으로 가서, 거기에서 지내도록 하여라. 내가 그 곳에 있는 한 과부에게 명하여서, 네게 먹을 것을 주도록 일러두었다." 엘리야는 곧 일어나서, 사르밧으로 갔다. 그가 성문 안으로 들어설 때에, 마침 한 과부가 땔감을 줍고 있었다. 엘리야가 그 여인을 불러서 말하였다. "마실 물을 한 그릇만 좀 떠다 주십시오."

As she was going to get it, he called, "And bring me, please, a piece of bread." "As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread--only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it--and die." Elijah said to her, "Don't be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.' " She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family. 그 여인이 물을 가지러 가려고 하니, 엘리야가 다시 여인을 불러서 말하였다. "먹을 것도 조금 가져다 주시면 좋겠습니다." 그 여인이 말하였다. "어른께서 섬기시는 주 하나님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세합니다. 저에게는 빵 한 조각도 없습니다. 다만, 뒤주에 밀가루가 한 줌 정도, 그리고 병에 기름이 몇 방울 남아 있을 뿐입니다. 보시다시피, 저는 지금 땔감을 줍고 있습니다. 이것을 가지고 가서, 저와 제 아들이 죽기 전에 마지막으로, 남아 있는 것을 모두 먹으려고 합니다." 엘리야가 그 여인에게 말하였다. "두려워하지 말고 가서, 방금 말한 대로 하십시오. 그러나 음식을 만들어서, 우선 나에게 먼저 가지고 오십시오. 그 뒤에 그대와, 아들이 먹을 음식을 만들도록 하십시오. 주님께서 이 땅에 다시 비를 내려 주실 때까지, 그 뒤주의 밀가루가 떨어지지 않을 것이며, 병의 기름이 마르지 않을 것이라고, 주 이스라엘의 하나님께서 말씀하셨습니다." 그 여인은 가서, 엘리야의 말대로 하였다. 과연 그 여인과 엘리야와 그 여인의 식구가 여러 날 동안 먹었지만,

For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in keeping with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah. Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing. She said to Elijah, "What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?" "Give me your son," Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed. Then he cried out to the LORD, "O LORD my God, have you brought tragedy also upon this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?" 뒤주의 밀가루가 떨어지지 않고, 병의 기름도 마르지 않았다. 주님께서 엘리야를 시켜서 하신 주님의 말씀대로 되었다. 이런 일이 있은 뒤에, 이 집 여주인의 아들이 병이 들었다. 그의 병은 매우 위중하여서, 끝내는 숨을 거두고 말았다. 그러자 그 여인은 엘리야에게 이렇게 말하였다. "하나님의 사람이신 어른께서 저와 무슨 상관이 있다고, 이렇게 저에게 오셔서, 저의 죄를 기억나게 하시고, 제 아들을 죽게 하십니까?" 엘리야가 그 여인에게 아들을 달라고 하면서, 그 여인의 품에서 그 아이를 받아 안고, 자기가 머물고 있는 다락으로 올라갔다. 그리고 그를 자기의 침대 위에 뉘어 놓고, 주님께 부르짖었다. "주 나의 하나님, 어찌하여 내가 머물고 있는 이 집의 과부에게 이렇게 재앙을 내리시어, 그 아들을 죽게 하십니까?"

Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this boy's life return to him!" The LORD heard Elijah's cry, and the boy's life returned to him, and he lived. Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, "Look, your son is alive!" Then the woman said to Elijah, "Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth." 그는 그 아이의 몸 위에 세 번이나 엎드려서, 몸과 몸을 맞춘 다음, 주님께 또 부르짖었다. "이제야 저는, 어른이 바로 하나님의 사람이시라는 것과, 어른이 하시는 말씀은 참으로 주님의 말씀이라는 것을 알았습니다."
