열왕기상 10장

 

When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relation to the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions. Arriving at Jerusalem with a very great caravan--with camels carrying spices, large quantities of gold, and precious stones--she came to Solomon and talked with him about all that she had on her mind. Solomon answered all her questions; nothing was too hard for the king to explain to her. When the queen of Sheba saw all the wisdom of Solomon and the palace he had built, the food on his table, the seating of his officials, the attending servants in their robes, his cupbearers, and the burnt offerings he made at the temple of the LORD, she was overwhelmed. 스바 여왕이, 주님의 이름 때문에 유명해진 솔로몬의 명성을 듣고서, 여러 가지 어려운 질문으로 시험해 보려고, 솔로몬을 찾아왔다. 여왕은 수많은 수행원을 데리고 또 여러 가지 향료와 많은 금과 보석을 낙타에 싣고 예루살렘으로 왔다. 그는 솔로몬에게 이르러서, 마음 속에 품고 있던 온갖 것을 다 물어 보았다. 솔로몬은, 여왕이 묻는 온갖 물음에 척척 대답하였다. 솔로몬이 몰라서 여왕에게 대답하지 못한 것은 하나도 없었다. 스바의 여왕은, 솔로몬이 온갖 지혜를 갖추고 있는 것을 확인하고, 또 그가 지은 궁전을 두루 살펴 보고, 또 왕의 식탁에다가 차려 놓은 요리와, 신하들이 둘러 앉은 모습과, 그의 관리들이 일하는 모습과, 그들이 입은 제복과, 술잔을 받들어 올리는 시종들과, 주님의 성전에서 드리는 번제물을 보고, 넋을 잃었다.

She said to the king, "The report I heard in my own country about your achievements and your wisdom is true. But I did not believe these things until I came and saw with my own eyes. Indeed, not even half was told me; in wisdom and wealth you have far exceeded the report I heard. How happy your men must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom! Praise be to the LORD your God, who has delighted in you and placed you on the throne of Israel. Because of the LORD's eternal love for Israel, he has made you king, to maintain justice and righteousness." And she gave the king 120 talents of gold, large quantities of spices, and precious stones. Never again were so many spices brought in as those the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon. 여왕이 왕에게 말하였다. "임금님께서 이루신 업적과 임금님의 지혜에 관한 소문을, 내가 나의 나라에서 이미 들었지만, 와서 보니, 과연 들은 소문이 모두 사실입니다. 내가 여기 오기 전까지는 그 소문을 믿지 않았는데, 내 눈으로 직접 확인하고 보니, 오히려 내가 들은 소문은 사실의 절반도 안 되는 것 같습니다. 임금님께서는, 내가 들은 소문보다, 지혜와 복이 훨씬 더 많습니다. 임금님의 백성은 참으로 행복한 사람들입니다. 임금님 앞에 서서, 늘 임금님의 지혜를 배우는 임금님의 신하들 또한 참으로 행복하다고 하지 아니할 수 없습니다. 임금님의 주 하나님께 찬양을 돌립니다. 하나님께서는 임금님을 좋아하셔서, 임금님을 이스라엘을 다스리는 왕좌에 앉히셨습니다. 주님께서는 이스라엘을 영원히 사랑하셔서, 임금님을 왕으로 삼으시고, 공평과 정의로 다스리게 하셨습니다." 그런 다음에 여왕은 금 일백이십 달란트와 아주 많은 향료와 보석을 왕에게 선사하였다. 솔로몬 왕은, 스바 여왕에게서 받은 것처럼 많은 향료를, 어느 누구에게서도 다시는 더 받아 본 일이 없다.

(Hiram's ships brought gold from Ophir; and from there they brought great cargoes of almugwood and precious stones. The king used the almugwood to make supports for the temple of the LORD and for the royal palace, and to make harps and lyres for the musicians. So much almugwood has never been imported or seen since that day.) King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired and asked for, besides what he had given her out of his royal bounty. Then she left and returned with her retinue to her own country. The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents, not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the land. （오빌에서부터 금을 싣고 온 히람의 배들은, 대단히 많은 백단목과 보석을 가지고 왔는데, 왕은 이 백단목으로 주님의 성전과 왕궁의 계단을 만들고, 합창단원이 쓸 수금과 하프를 만들었다. 이와 같은 백단목은 전에도 들여온 일이 없고, 오늘까지도 이런 나무는 본 일이 없다.） 솔로몬 왕은 스바의 여왕에게 왕의 관례에 따라 답례물을 준 것 밖에도, 그 여왕이 요구하는 대로, 가지고 싶어하는 것은 모두 주었다. 여왕은 신하들과 함께 자기 나라로 돌아갔다. 해마다 솔로몬에게 들어오는 금은, 그 무게가 육백육십육 달란트였다. 이 밖에도 상인들로부터 세금으로 들어온 것과, 무역업자와의 교역에서 얻는 수입과, 아라비아의 모든 왕들과 국내의 지방장관들이 보내 오는 금도 있었다.

King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred bekas of gold went into each shield. He also made three hundred small shields of hammered gold, with three minas of gold in each shield. The king put them in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon. Then the king made a great throne inlaid with ivory and overlaid with fine gold. The throne had six steps, and its back had a rounded top. on both sides of the seat were armrests, with a lion standing beside each of them. Twelve lions stood on the six steps, one at either end of each step. Nothing like it had ever been made for any other kingdom. 솔로몬 왕은, 금을 두드려 펴서 입힌 큰 방패를 이백 개나 만들었는데, 방패 하나에 들어간 금만 하여도 육백 세겔이나 되었다. 그는 또, 금을 두드려 펴서 입힌 작은 방패를 삼백 개를 만들었는데, 그 방패 하나에 들어간 금은 삼 마네였다. 왕은 이 방패들을 '레바논 수풀 궁'에 두었다. 왕은 상아로 큰 보좌를 만들고, 거기에다 잘 정련된 금을 입혔다. 보좌로 오르는 층계에는 계단이 여섯이 있었으며, 보좌의 꼭대기는 뒤가 둥그렇게 되어 있었으며, 그 앉는 자리 양쪽에는 팔걸이가 있고, 그 팔걸이 양 옆에는 각각 사자 상이 하나씩 서 있었다. 여섯 개의 계단 양쪽에도, 각각 여섯 개씩 열두 개의 사자 상이 서 있었다. 일찍이, 어느 나라에서도 이렇게는 만들지 못하였다.

All King Solomon's goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon's days. The king had a fleet of trading ships at sea along with the ships of Hiram. once every three years it returned, carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons. King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart. Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift--articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules. 솔로몬 왕이 마시는 데 쓰는 모든 그릇은 금으로 되어 있었고, '레바논 수풀 궁'에 있는 그릇도 모두 순금이며, 은으로 된 것은 하나도 없었다. 솔로몬 시대에는, 은은 귀금속 축에 들지도 못하였다. 왕은 다시스 배를 바다에 띄우고, 히람의 배와 함께 해상무역을 하게 하였다. 세 해마다 한 번씩, 다시스의 배가 금과 은과 상아와 원숭이와 공작새들을 실어 오고는 하였다. 솔로몬 왕은 재산에 있어서나, 지혜에 있어서나, 이 세상의 그 어느 왕보다 훨씬 뛰어났다. 그래서 온 세계 사람은 모두, 솔로몬을 직접 만나서, 하나님께서 그의 마음에 넣어 주신 지혜의 말을 들으려고 하였다. 그래서 그들은 각각 은그릇과 금그릇과 옷과 갑옷과 향료와 말과 노새를 예물로 가지고 왔는데, 해마다 이런 사람의 방문이 그치지 않았다.

Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills. Solomon's horses were imported from Egypt and from Kue --the royal merchants purchased them from Kue. They imported a chariot from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver, and a horse for a hundred and fifty. They also exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and of the Arameans. 솔로몬이 병거와 기병을 모으니, 병거가 천사백 대, 기병이 만 이천 명에 이르렀다. 솔로몬은 그들을, 병거 주둔성과 왕이 있는 예루살렘에다가 나누어서 배치하였다. 왕 덕분에 예루살렘에는 은이 돌처럼 흔하였고, 백향목은 세펠라 평원지대의 뽕나무만큼이나 많았다. 솔로몬은 말을 이집트와 구에로부터 수입하였는데, 왕실 무역상을 시켜서, 구에에서 사들였다. 병거는 이집트에서 한 대에 은 육백 세겔을, 그리고 말은 한 필에 은 백오십 세겔을 주고 들여와서, 그것을 헷 족의 모든 왕과 시리아 왕들에게 되팔기도 하였다.
