Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all the Israelites had gone there to make him king. When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt. So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him: "Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you." Rehoboam answered, "Go away for three days and then come back to me." So the people went away. 온 이스라엘이 르호보암을 왕으로 세우려고 세겜에 모였으므로, 르호보암도 세겜으로 갔다. 느밧의 아들 여로보암도 이 소문을 들었다. （그 때에 그는 솔로몬 왕을 피하여 이집트로 가서 있었다.） 이집트에서 사람들이 여로보암을 불러내니, 그가 이스라엘의 모든 회중과 함께 르호보암에게로 가서, 이렇게 말하였다. Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. "How would you advise me to answer these people?" he asked. They replied, "If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favorable answer, they will always be your servants." But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him. He asked them, "What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, 'Lighten the yoke your father put on us'?" The young men who had grown up with him replied, "Tell these people who have said to you, 'Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but make our yoke lighter'-tell them, 'My little finger is thicker than my father's waist. 르호보암 왕은 부왕 솔로몬이 살아 있을 때에, 부왕을 섬긴 원로들과 상의하였다. "이 백성에게 어떤 대답을 해야 할지, 경들의 충고를 듣고 싶소." 그들은 르호보암에게 이렇게 대답하였다. "임금님께서 이 백성의 종이 되셔서, 그들을 섬기려고 하시면, 또 그들이 요구한 것을 들어 주시겠다고 좋은 말로 대답해 주시면, 이 백성은 평생 임금님의 종이 될 것입니다." 원로들이 이렇게 충고하였지만, 그는 원로들의 충고를 무시하고, 자기와 함께 자란, 자기를 받드는 젊은 신하들과 의논하면서, 그들에게 물었다. My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.' " Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, "Come back to me in three days." The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders, he followed the advice of the young men and said, "My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions." So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfill the word the LORD had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite. 내 아버지가 너희에게 무거운 멍에를 메웠다. 그러나 나는 이제 너희에게 그것보다 더 무거운 멍에를 메우겠다. 내 아버지는 너희를 가죽 채찍으로 매질하였지만, 나는 너희를 쇠 채찍으로 치겠다' 하고 말씀하십시오." 왕이 백성에게 사흘 뒤에 다시 오라고 하였으므로, 여로보암과 온 백성은 사흘째 되는 날에 르호보암 앞에 나아왔다. 왕은 원로들의 충고는 무시하고, 백성에게 가혹한 말로 대답하였다. 그는 젊은이들의 충고대로 백성에게 말하였다. When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: "What share do we have in David, what part in Jesse's son? To your tents, O Israel! Look after your own house, O David!" So the Israelites went home. But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them. King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labor, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem. So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day. When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David. 온 이스라엘은, 왕이 자기들의 요구를 전혀 듣지 않는 것을 보고, 왕에게 외쳤다. When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered the whole house of Judah and the tribe of Benjamin--a hundred and eighty thousand fighting men--to make war against the house of Israel and to regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon. But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God: "Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to the whole house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people, 'This is what the LORD says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing.' " So they obeyed the word of the LORD and went home again, as the LORD had ordered. Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel. 르호보암이 예루살렘에 이르러서, 온 유다의 가문과 베냐민 지파에 동원령을 내려, 정병 십팔만 명을 선발하였다. 그래서 이스라엘 가문과 싸워서, 왕국을 다시 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암에게 돌리려고 하였다. 그러나 그 때에 하나님께서 하나님의 사람 스마야에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 유다 왕 솔로몬의 아들 르호보암과, 유다와 베냐민의 모든 가문과, 그 밖에 나머지 모든 백성에게, 이 말을 전하여라. '나 주가 말한다. 일이 이렇게 된 것은, 내가 시킨 것이다. 너희는 올라가지 말아라. 너희의 동족인 이스라엘 자손과 싸우지 말고, 저마다 자기 집으로 돌아가거라.'" 그들은 이러한 주님의 말씀을 듣고, 주님의 말씀에 순종하여 모두 귀향하였다. 여로보암이 에브라임의 산지에 있는 세겜 성을 도성으로 삼고, 얼마 동안 거기에서 살다가, 브누엘 성을 세우고, 그리로 도성을 옮겼다.

Jeroboam thought to himself, "The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David. If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam." After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, "It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt." One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan. And this thing became a sin; the people went even as far as Dan to worship the one there. 그런데 여로보암의 마음에, 잘못하면 왕국이 다시 다윗 가문으로 돌아갈지도 모른다는 생각이 들었다. 이 백성이 예루살렘에 있는 주님의 성전으로 제사를 드리려고 올라갔다가, 그들의 마음이 그들의 옛 주인인 유다 왕 르호보암에게로 돌아가게 되는 날이면, 그들이 자기를 죽이고, 유다 왕 르호보암에게 돌아갈지도 모른다는 생각이 들었다. 왕은 궁리를 한 끝에, 금송아지 상 두 개를 만들었다. 그리고는 백성에게 이렇게 말하였다. "예루살렘으로 올라가는 일은, 너희에게는 너무 번거로운 일이다. 이스라엘 백성들아, 너희를 이집트에서 구해 주신 신이 여기에 계신다." 그리고 그는 금송아지 상 두 개를, 하나는 베델에 두고, 다른 하나는 단에 두었다. 그런데 이 일은 이스라엘 안에서 죄가 되었다. 백성들은 저 멀리 단까지 가서 거기에 있는 그 한 송아지를 섬겼다.

Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites. He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings. 여로보암은 또 여러 높은 곳에 산당들을 짓고, 레위 자손이 아닌 일반 백성 가운데서, 제사장을 임명하여 세웠다. 여로보암은 유다에서 행하는 절기와 비슷하게 하여, 여덟째 달 보름날을 절기로 정하고, 베델에다 세운 제단에서, 그가 만든 송아지들에게 제사를 드렸으며, 그가 만든 베델의 산당에서 제사를 집행할 제사장들도 임명하였다. 왕은 자기 마음대로 정한 여덟째 달 보름날에, 베델에 세운 제단에서 제사를 드렸다. 그는 이스라엘 자손이 지켜야 할 절기를 이렇게 제정하고, 자기도 그 제단에 분향을 하려고 올라갔다.
