열왕기상 3장

 

Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt and married his daughter. He brought her to the City of David until he finished building his palace and the temple of the LORD, and the wall around Jerusalem. The people, however, were still sacrificing at the high places, because a temple had not yet been built for the Name of the LORD. Solomon showed his love for the LORD by walking according to the statutes of his father David, except that he offered sacrifices and burned incense on the high places. The king went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices, for that was the most important high place, and Solomon offered a thousand burnt offerings on that altar. At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon during the night in a dream, and God said, "Ask for whatever you want me to give you." 솔로몬은, 이집트 왕 바로와 혼인 관계를 맺고, 바로의 딸을 아내로 맞았다. 그리고 그는 자신의 집과 주님의 성전과 예루살렘 성벽의 건축을 모두 끝낼 때까지, 그 아내를 다윗 성에 있게 하였다. 주님께 예배드릴 성전이 그 때까지도 건축되지 않았으므로, 백성은 그 때까지 여러 곳에 있는 산당에서 제사를 드렸다. 솔로몬은 주님을 사랑하였으며, 자기 아버지 다윗의 법도를 따랐으나, 그도 여러 산당에서 제사를 드리며 분향하였다. 기브온에 제일 유명한 산당이 있었으므로, 왕은 늘 그 곳에 가서 제사를 드렸다. 솔로몬이 그 때까지 그 제단에 바친 번제물은, 천 마리가 넘을 것이다. 한 번은, 왕이 그리로 제사를 드리러 갔는데, 그 날 밤에 기브온에서, 주님께서 꿈에 솔로몬에게 나타나셨다. 하나님께서 말씀하시기를 "내가 너에게 무엇을 주기를 바라느냐? 나에게 구하여라" 하셨다.

Solomon answered, "You have shown great kindness to your servant, my father David, because he was faithful to you and righteous and upright in heart. You have continued this great kindness to him and have given him a son to sit on his throne this very day. "Now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David. But I am only a little child and do not know how to carry out my duties. Your servant is here among the people you have chosen, a great people, too numerous to count or number. So give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and to distinguish between right and wrong. For who is able to govern this great people of yours?" The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. 솔로몬이 대답하였다. "주님께서는, 주님의 종이요 나의 아버지인 다윗이, 진실과 공의와 정직한 마음으로 주님을 모시고 살았다고 해서, 큰 은혜를 베풀어 주시고, 또 그 큰 은혜로 그를 지켜 주셔서, 오늘과 같이 이렇게 그 보좌에 앉을 아들까지 주셨습니다. 그러나 주 나의 하나님, 주님께서는, 내가 아직 어린 아이인데도, 나의 아버지 다윗의 뒤를 이어서, 주님의 종인 나를 왕이 되게 하셨습니다. 나는 아직 나가고 들어오고 하는 처신을 제대로 할 줄 모릅니다. 주님의 종은, 주님께서 선택하신 백성, 곧 그 수를 셀 수도 없고 계산을 할 수도 없을 만큼 큰 백성 가운데 하나일 뿐입니다. 그러므로 주님의 종에게 지혜로운 마음을 주셔서, 주님의 백성을 재판하고, 선과 악을 분별할 수 있게 해주시기를 바랍니다. 이렇게 많은 주님의 백성을 누가 재판할 수 있겠습니까?" 주님께서는 솔로몬이 이렇게 청한 것이 마음에 드셨다.

So God said to him, "Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself, nor have asked for the death of your enemies but for discernment in administering justice, I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. Moreover, I will give you what you have not asked for--both riches and honor--so that in your lifetime you will have no equal among kings. And if you walk in my ways and obey my statutes and commands as David your father did, I will give you a long life." Then Solomon awoke--and he realized it had been a dream. He returned to Jerusalem, stood before the ark of the Lord's covenant and sacrificed burnt offerings and fellowship offerings. Then he gave a feast for all his court. 그러므로 하나님께서 그에게 말씀하셨다. "네가 스스로를 생각하여 오래 사는 것이나 부유한 것이나 원수갚는 것을 요구하지 아니하고, 다만 재판하는 데에, 듣고서 무엇이 옳은지 분별하는 능력을 요구하였으므로, 이제 나는 네 말대로, 네게 지혜롭고 총명한 마음을 준다. 너와 같은 사람이 너보다 앞에도 없었고, 네 뒤에도 없을 것이다. 나는 또한, 네가 달라고 하지 아니한 부귀와 영화도 모두 너에게 주겠다. 네 일생 동안, 왕 가운데서 너와 견줄 만한 사람이 없을 것이다. 그리고 네 아버지 다윗이 한 것과 같이, 네가 나의 길을 걸으며, 내 법도와 명령을 지키면, 네가 오래 살도록 해주겠다." 솔로몬이 깨어나서 보니, 꿈이었다. 그는 곧바로 예루살렘으로 가서, 주님의 언약궤 앞에 서서, 번제와 화목제를 드리고, 모든 신하에게 잔치도 베풀어 주었다.

Now two prostitutes came to the king and stood before him. One of them said, "My lord, this woman and I live in the same house. I had a baby while she was there with me. The third day after my child was born, this woman also had a baby. We were alone; there was no one in the house but the two of us. "During the night this woman's son died because she lay on him. So she got up in the middle of the night and took my son from my side while I your servant was asleep. She put him by her breast and put her dead son by my breast. 하루는 창녀 두 사람이 왕에게 와서, 그 앞에 섰다. 그 가운데서 한 여자가 나서서 말을 하였다. "임금님께 아룁니다. 저희 두 사람은 한 집에 살고 있습니다. 제가 아이를 낳을 때에 저 여자도 저와 함께 있었습니다. 그리고 제가 아이를 낳은 지 사흘 만에 저 여자도 아이를 낳았습니다. 그 집 안에는 우리 둘만 있을 뿐이고, 다른 사람은 아무도 없었습니다. 그런데 저 여자가 잠을 자다가, 그만 잘못하여 자기의 아이를 깔아 뭉개었으므로, 그 아들은 그 날 밤에 죽었습니다. 그런데 이 종이 깊이 잠든 사이에, 저 여자가 한밤중에 일어나서 아이를 바꾸었습니다. 저의 옆에 누워 있는 저의 아들을 데리고 가서 자기 품에 두고, 자기의 죽은 아들은 저의 품에 뉘어 놓았습니다.

The next morning, I got up to nurse my son--and he was dead! But when I looked at him closely in the morning light, I saw that it wasn't the son I had borne." The other woman said, "No! The living one is my son; the dead one is yours." But the first one insisted, "No! The dead one is yours; the living one is mine." And so they argued before the king. The king said, "This one says, 'My son is alive and your son is dead,' while that one says, 'No! Your son is dead and mine is alive.' " Then the king said, "Bring me a sword." So they brought a sword for the king. He then gave an order: "Cut the living child in two and give half to one and half to the other." 제가 새벽에 저의 아들에게 젖을 먹이려고 일어나서 보니, 아이가 죽어 있었습니다. 아침에 제가 자세히 들여다 보았는데, 그 아이는 제가 낳은 아들이 아니었습니다." 그러자 다른 여자가 대들었다. 그렇지 않다는 것이었다. 살아 있는 아이가 자기의 아들이고, 죽은 아이는 다른 여자의 아들이라고 우겼다. 먼저 말을 한 여자도 지지 않고, 살아 있는 아이가 자기 아들이고, 죽은 아이는 자기의 아들이 아니라고 맞섰다. 그들은 이렇게 왕 앞에서 다투었다. 왕은 속으로 생각하였다. '두 여자가 서로, 살아 있는 아이를 자기의 아들이라고 하고, 죽은 아이를 다른 여자의 아들이라고 한다. 그렇다면 좋은 수가 있다.' 왕은 신하들에게 칼을 가져 오게 하였다. 신하들이 칼을 왕 앞으로 가져 오니, 왕이 명령을 내렸다. "살아 있는 이 아이를 둘로 나누어서, 반쪽은 이 여자에게 주고, 나머지 반쪽은 저 여자에게 주어라."

The woman whose son was alive was filled with compassion for her son and said to the king, "Please, my lord, give her the living baby! Don't kill him!" But the other said, "Neither I nor you shall have him. Cut him in two!" Then the king gave his ruling: "Give the living baby to the first woman. Do not kill him; she is his mother." When all Israel heard the verdict the king had given, they held the king in awe, because they saw that he had wisdom from God to administer justice. 그러자 살아 있는 그 아이의 어머니는, 자기 아들에 대한 모정이 불타 올라, 왕에게 애원하였다. "제발, 임금님, 살아 있는 이 아이를, 저 여자에게 주시어도 좋으니, 아이를 죽이지는 말아 주십시오." 그러나 다른 여자는 "어차피, 내 아이도 안 될 테고, 네 아이도 안 될 테니, 차라리 나누어 가지자" 하고 말하였다. 그 때에 드디어 왕이 명령을 내렸다. "살아 있는 아이를 죽이지 말고, 아이를 양보한 저 여자에게 주어라. 저 여자가 그 아이의 어머니이다." 모든 이스라엘 사람이, 왕이 재판한 판결 소식을 들었다. 그리고 백성들은, 왕이 재판할 때에 하나님께서 주시는 지혜로 공정하게 판단한다는 것을 알고, 왕을 두려워하였다.
