When King David was old and well advanced in years, he could not keep warm even when they put covers over him. So his servants said to him, "Let us look for a young virgin to attend the king and take care of him. She can lie beside him so that our lord the king may keep warm." Then they searched throughout Israel for a beautiful girl and found Abishag, a Shunammite, and brought her to the king. The girl was very beautiful; she took care of the king and waited on him, but the king had no intimate relations with her. Now Adonijah, whose mother was Haggith, put himself forward and said, "I will be king." So he got chariots and horses ready, with fifty men to run ahead of him. 다윗 왕이 나이 많아 늙으니, 이불을 덮어도 따뜻하지 않았다. 신하들이 왕에게 말하였다. "저희가 임금님께 젊은 처녀를 한 사람 데려다가, 임금님 곁에서 시중을 들게 하겠습니다. 처녀를 시중드는 사람으로 삼아 품에 안고 주무시면, 임금님의 몸이 따뜻해질 것입니다." 신하들은 이스라엘 온 나라 안에서 젊고 아름다운 처녀를 찾다가, 수넴 처녀 아비삭을 발견하고, 그 처녀를 왕에게로 데려왔다. 그 어린 처녀는 대단히 아름다웠다. 그 처녀가 왕의 시중을 드는 사람이 되어서 왕을 섬겼지마는, 왕은 처녀와 관계를 하지는 않았다. 그 때에 다윗과 학깃 사이에서 태어난 아들 아도니야는, 자기가 왕이 될 것이라고 하면서, 후계자처럼 행세하고 다녔다. 자신이 타고 다니는 병거를 마련하고, 기병과 호위병 쉰 명을 데리고 다녔다.

(His father had never interfered with him by asking, "Why do you behave as you do?" He was also very handsome and was born next after Absalom.) Adonijah conferred with Joab son of Zeruiah and with Abiathar the priest, and they gave him their support. But Zadok the priest, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, Nathan the prophet, Shimei and Rei and David's special guard did not join Adonijah. Adonijah then sacrificed sheep, cattle and fattened calves at the Stone of Zoheleth near En Rogel. He invited all his brothers, the king's sons, and all the men of Judah who were royal officials, but he did not invite Nathan the prophet or Benaiah or the special guard or his brother Solomon. 그런데도 그의 아버지 다윗은 아도니야를 꾸짖지도 않고, 어찌하여 그런 일을 하느냐고 한 번도 묻지도 않았다. 그는 압살롬 다음으로 태어난 아들로서, 용모가 뛰어났다. 아도니야가 스루야의 아들 요압과 아비아달 제사장을 포섭하니, 그들이 아도니야를 지지하였다. 그러나 사독 제사장과 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 나단 예언자와 시므이와 레이와 다윗을 따라다닌 장군들은, 아도니야에게 동조하지 않았다. 아도니야가 엔 로겔 가까이에 있는 소헬렛 바위 옆에서, 양과 소와 살진 송아지를 잡아서 잔치를 베풀고, 자기의 형제인 왕자들과 유다 사람인 왕의 모든 신하들을 초청하였다. 그러나 나단 예언자와 브나야와 왕의 경호병들과 동생 솔로몬은 초청하지 않았다.

Then Nathan asked Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, "Have you not heard that Adonijah, the son of Haggith, has become king without our lord David's knowing it? Now then, let me advise you how you can save your own life and the life of your son Solomon. Go in to King David and say to him, 'My lord the king, did you not swear to me your servant: "Surely Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne"? Why then has Adonijah become king?' While you are still there talking to the king, I will come in and confirm what you have said." So Bathsheba went to see the aged king in his room, where Abishag the Shunammite was attending him. 나단이 솔로몬의 어머니 밧세바에게 물었다. "우리의 왕 다윗 임금님도 모르시는 사이에, 이미 학깃의 아들 아도니야가 왕이 되었다고 합니다. 혹시 듣지 못하셨습니까? 제가 이제 마님의 목숨과 마님의 아들 솔로몬의 목숨을 구할 수 있는 좋은 계획을 알려 드리겠습니다. 어서 다윗 임금님께 들어가셔서, 이렇게 말씀하십시오. '임금님, 임금님께서는 일찍이 이 종에게 이르시기를, 이 몸에서 난 아들 솔로몬이 반드시 임금님의 뒤를 이어서 왕이 될 것이며, 그가 임금님의 자리에 앉을 것이라고 맹세하시지 않으셨습니까? 그런데 어떻게 아도니야가 왕이 되었습니까?' 마님께서 이렇게 임금님과 함께 말씀을 나누고 계시면, 저도 마님의 뒤를 따라 들어가서, 마님께서 말씀하시는 것을 도와드리겠습니다." 밧세바는 침실에 있는 왕에게로 갔다. 왕은 매우 늙어서, 수넴 여자 아비삭이 수종을 들고 있었다.

Bathsheba bowed low and knelt before the king. "What is it you want?" the king asked. She said to him, "My lord, you yourself swore to me your servant by the LORD your God: 'Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne.' But now Adonijah has become king, and you, my lord the king, do not know about it. He has sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep, and has invited all the king's sons, Abiathar the priest and Joab the commander of the army, but he has not invited Solomon your servant. My lord the king, the eyes of all Israel are on you, to learn from you who will sit on the throne of my lord the king after him. 밧세바가 엎드려서 절을 하니, 왕은 "무슨 일이오?" 하고 물었다. 그가 왕에게 대답하였다. "임금님, 임금님께서는 임금님의 주 하나님을 두고 맹세하시며, 이 종에게 이르시기를, 이 몸에서 태어난 아들 솔로몬이 임금님의 뒤를 이어서 왕이 될 것이며, 그가 임금의 자리에 앉을 것이라고 말씀하셨습니다. 그런데 지금 아도니야가 왕이 되었는데도, 임금님께서는 이 일을 알지 못하고 계십니다. 아도니야가 소와 송아지와 양을 많이 잡아 제사를 드리고, 왕의 모든 아들과 아비아달 제사장과 군사령관 요압을 초청하였습니다. 그러나 임금님의 종 솔로몬은 청하지 않았습니다. 임금님께서는 통촉하시기 바랍니다. 온 이스라엘 사람이 임금님을 주시하고 있고, 임금님의 뒤를 이어서 임금의 자리에 앉을 사람이 누구인지를, 임금님께서 알려 주시기를 고대하고 있습니다.

Otherwise, as soon as my lord the king is laid to rest with his fathers, I and my son Solomon will be treated as criminals." While she was still speaking with the king, Nathan the prophet arrived. And they told the king, "Nathan the prophet is here." So he went before the king and bowed with his face to the ground. Nathan said, "Have you, my lord the king, declared that Adonijah shall be king after you, and that he will sit on your throne? Today he has gone down and sacrificed great numbers of cattle, fattened calves, and sheep. He has invited all the king's sons, the commanders of the army and Abiathar the priest. Right now they are eating and drinking with him and saying, 'Long live King Adonijah!' 그렇게 하지 않으시면, 임금님께서 돌아가셔서 조상과 함께 누우실 때에, 나와 솔로몬은 반역자가 될 것입니다." 이렇게 밧세바가 왕과 함께 말을 나누고 있을 때에, 예언자 나단이 들어왔다. 그러자 신하들이 "예언자 나단이 드십니다" 하고 왕에게 알렸다. 그는 왕 앞에 나아가서, 얼굴을 땅에 대고 크게 절을 하였다. 나단이 말하였다. "임금님께 여쭙니다. 아도니야가 왕이 되어서, 임금님의 뒤를 이어 임금의 자리에 앉을 것이라고 말씀하신 적이 있으십니까? 아도니야가 오늘 내려가서, 소와 송아지와 양을 많이 잡아서, 제사를 드리고, 모든 왕자와 군사령관과 아비아달 제사장을 초청하였습니다. 그들은 아도니야 앞에서 먹고 마시고는 '아도니야 임금님 만세'를 외쳤습니다.

But me your servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and your servant Solomon he did not invite. Is this something my lord the king has done without letting his servants know who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?" Then King David said, "Call in Bathsheba." So she came into the king's presence and stood before him. The king then took an oath: "As surely as the LORD lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, I will surely carry out today what I swore to you by the LORD, the God of Israel: Solomon your son shall be king after me, and he will sit on my throne in my place." 그러나 임금님의 종인 저와 사독 제사장과 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 임금님의 종 솔로몬은 초청하지 않았습니다. 이 일이 임금님께서 하신 일이면, 임금님의 뒤를 이어서 임금의 자리에 앉을 사람이 누구인지를, 임금님의 종인 저에게만은 알려 주실 수 있었을 것입니다." 이에 다윗 왕이 대답하였다. "밧세바를 이리로 부르시오." 밧세바가 들어와서 왕의 앞에 서니, 왕은 이렇게 맹세하였다. "나를 모든 재난에서부터 구원하여 주신 주님의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하오. 내가 전에 이스라엘의 주 하나님을 두고 분명히 그대에게 맹세하기를 '그대의 아들 솔로몬이 임금이 될 것이며, 그가 나를 이어서 임금의 자리에 앉을 것이다' 하였으니, 이 일을 오늘 그대로 이행하겠소."

Then Bathsheba bowed low with her face to the ground and, kneeling before the king, said, "May my lord King David live forever!" King David said, "Call in Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet and Benaiah son of Jehoiada." When they came before the king, he said to them: "Take your lord's servants with you and set Solomon my son on my own mule and take him down to Gihon. There have Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him king over Israel. Blow the trumpet and shout, 'Long live King Solomon!' Then you are to go up with him, and he is to come and sit on my throne and reign in my place. I have appointed him ruler over Israel and Judah." 밧세바가 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드려서, 크게 절을 하며 "임금님, 다윗 임금님, 만수무강 하시기를 빕니다" 하고 말하였다. 다윗 왕이 사독 제사장과 나단 예언자와 여호야다의 아들 브나야를 불러 오라고 하였다. 그들이 왕 앞으로 나아오니, 왕이 그들에게 말하였다. "그대들은 나의 신하들을 거느리고, 내가 타던 노새에 나의 아들 솔로몬을 태워서, 기혼으로 내려가도록 하십시오. 사독 제사장과 나단 예언자는 거기에서 그에게 기름을 부어 이스라엘의 왕으로 삼고, 그런 다음에 뿔나팔을 불며 '솔로몬 왕 만세!' 하고 외치십시오. 그리고 그를 따라 올라와, 그를 모시고 들어가서, 나를 대신하여 임금의 자리에 앉히십시오. 그러면 그가 나의 뒤를 이어서 왕이 될 것입니다. 그를 내가 이스라엘과 유다의 통치자로 임명하였습니다."

Benaiah son of Jehoiada answered the king, "Amen! May the LORD, the God of my lord the king, so declare it. As the LORD was with my lord the king, so may he be with Solomon to make his throne even greater than the throne of my lord King David!" So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites went down and put Solomon on King David's mule and escorted him to Gihon. Zadok the priest took the horn of oil from the sacred tent and anointed Solomon. Then they sounded the trumpet and all the people shouted, "Long live King Solomon!" And all the people went up after him, playing flutes and rejoicing greatly, so that the ground shook with the sound. 여호야다의 아들 브나야가 왕에게 대답하였다. "아멘, 임금님의 하나님이신 주님께서도 그렇게 말씀하시기를 바랍니다. 주님께서 임금님과 함께 계신 것처럼, 솔로몬과도 함께 계셔서, 그의 자리가 우리 다윗 임금님의 자리보다 더 높게 되기를 바랍니다." 사독 제사장과 나단 예언자와 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 그렛 사람과 블렛 사람이 내려가서, 솔로몬을 다윗 왕의 노새에 태워서, 기혼으로 데리고 갔다. 사독 제사장이 장막에서 기름을 넣은 뿔을 가지고 와서, 솔로몬에게 기름을 부었다. 그리고 뿔나팔을 부니, 모든 백성이 "솔로몬 왕 만세!" 하고 외쳤다. 모든 백성이 그의 뒤를 따라 올라와, 피리를 불면서, 열광적으로 기뻐하였는데, 그 기뻐하는 소리 때문에 세상이 떠나갈 듯 하였다.

Adonijah and all the guests who were with him heard it as they were finishing their feast. on hearing the sound of the trumpet, Joab asked, "What's the meaning of all the noise in the city?" Even as he was speaking, Jonathan son of Abiathar the priest arrived. Adonijah said, "Come in. A worthy man like you must be bringing good news." "Not at all!" Jonathan answered. "Our lord King David has made Solomon king. The king has sent with him Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah son of Jehoiada, the Kerethites and the Pelethites, and they have put him on the king's mule, and Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king at Gihon. From there they have gone up cheering, and the city resounds with it. That's the noise you hear. 아도니야와 그의 초청을 받은 모든 사람이 먹기를 마칠 때에, 이 소리를 들었다. 요압이 뿔나팔 소리를 듣고서 "왜 이렇게 온 성 안이 시끄러운가?" 하고 물었다. 그의 말이 다 끝나기도 전에, 아비아달 제사장의 아들 요나단이 들어왔다. 아도니야가 말하였다. "어서 들어오게. 그대는 좋은 사람이니, 좋은 소식을 가져 왔겠지." 요나단은 아도니야에게 대답하였다. "아닙니다. 우리의 다윗 임금님께서 솔로몬을 왕으로 삼으셨습니다. 임금님께서는 사독 제사장과 나단 예언자와 여호야다의 아들 브나야와 그렛 사람과 블렛 사람을 솔로몬과 함께 보내셨는데, 그들이 솔로몬을 왕의 노새에 태웠습니다. 그리고 사독 제사장과 나단 예언자가 기혼에서 그에게 기름을 부어서, 왕으로 삼았습니다. 그래서 그들이 그 곳에서부터 기뻐하면서 올라오는 바람에, 성 안이 온통 흥분으로 들떠 있습니다. 여러분께서 들으신 소리는 바로 그 소리입니다.

Moreover, Solomon has taken his seat on the royal throne. Also, the royal officials have come to congratulate our lord King David, saying, 'May your God make Solomon's name more famous than yours and his throne greater than yours!' And the king bowed in worship on his bed and said, 'Praise be to the LORD, the God of Israel, who has allowed my eyes to see a successor on my throne today.' " At this, all Adonijah's guests rose in alarm and dispersed. But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 솔로몬이 임금 자리에 앉았으며, 임금님의 신하들도 들어와서, 우리의 다윗 임금님께 축하를 드리면서 '임금님의 하나님께서 솔로몬의 이름을 임금님의 이름보다 더 좋게 하시며, 그의 자리를 임금님의 자리보다 더 높게 하시기를 바랍니다' 하고 축복하였습니다. 임금님께서도 친히 침상에서 절을 하시며, '주님께서 오늘 내 자리에 앉을 사람을 주시고, 또 이 눈으로 그것을 보게 하시니, 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 찬양을 드립니다' 하고 말씀하셨다고 합니다." 그 말을 듣고, 아도니야의 초청을 받아서 와 있던 모든 사람들이, 황급히 일어나서, 모두 제 갈 길로 가 버렸다. 아도니야는, 솔로몬이 두려워서, 일어나 가서, 제단 뿔을 붙잡았다.

Then Solomon was told, "Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon and is clinging to the horns of the altar. He says, 'Let King Solomon swear to me today that he will not put his servant to death with the sword.' " Solomon replied, "If he shows himself to be a worthy man, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground; but if evil is found in him, he will die." Then King Solomon sent men, and they brought him down from the altar. And Adonijah came and bowed down to King Solomon, and Solomon said, "Go to your home." 사람들이 솔로몬에게 말하였다. "아도니야가 솔로몬 임금님을 두려워하여서, 지금 제단 뿔을 붙잡고 솔로몬 임금님께서 임금님의 종인 아도니야를 칼로 죽이지 않겠다고 맹세해 주시기를 바라고 있습니다." 솔로몬이 말하였다. "그가 충신이면, 그의 머리카락 하나도 땅에 떨어지지 않을 것이다. 그러나 그에게서 악이 발견되면 그는 죽을 것이다." 솔로몬 왕이 사람을 보내어 그를 제단에서 끌어오게 하니, 그가 와서, 솔로몬 왕에게 절을 하였다. 그러자 솔로몬은 그에게 집에 가 있으라고 하였다.
