사무엘하 10장

 

In the course of time, the king of the Ammonites died, and his son Hanun succeeded him as king. David thought, "I will show kindness to Hanun son of Nahash, just as his father showed kindness to me." So David sent a delegation to express his sympathy to Hanun concerning his father. When David's men came to the land of the Ammonites, the Ammonite nobles said to Hanun their lord, "Do you think David is honoring your father by sending men to you to express sympathy? Hasn't David sent them to you to explore the city and spy it out and overthrow it?" So Hanun seized David's men, shaved off half of each man's beard, cut off their garments in the middle at the buttocks, and sent them away. When David was told about this, he sent messengers to meet the men, for they were greatly humiliated. The king said, "Stay at Jericho till your beards have grown, and then come back." 그 뒤에 암몬 사람의 왕이 죽고, 그의 아들 하눈이 그를 이어서 왕이 되었다. 다윗은 "하눈의 아버지 나하스가 나에게 은혜를 베풀었으니, 나도 나하스의 아들 하눈에게 은혜를 베풀어야겠다" 하고서, 신하들을 보내어, 고인에게 조의를 표하게 하였다. 그래서 다윗의 신하들이 암몬 사람의 땅에 이르렀다. 그러나 암몬 사람의 대신들이 자기들의 상전인 하눈에게 말하였다. "다윗이 임금님께 조문 사절을 보낸 것이 임금님의 부친을 존경하기 때문이라고 생각하십니까? 오히려 이 도성을 두루 살피고 정탐하여, 함락시키려고, 다윗이 임금님께 자기의 신하들을 보낸 것이 아닙니까?" 그래서 하눈은 다윗의 신하들을 붙잡아서, 그들의 한쪽 수염을 깎고, 입은 옷 가운데를 도려내어, 양쪽 엉덩이가 드러나게 해서 돌려보냈다. 사람들은 이 일을 다윗에게 알렸다. 조문 사절이 너무나도 수치스러운 일을 당하였으므로, 다윗 왕은 사람을 보내어 그들을 맞으며, 수염이 다시 자랄 때까지 여리고에 머물러 있다가, 수염이 다 자란 다음에 돌아오라고 하였다.

When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench in David's nostrils, they hired twenty thousand Aramean foot soldiers from Beth Rehob and Zobah, as well as the king of Maacah with a thousand men, and also twelve thousand men from Tob. On hearing this, David sent Joab out with the entire army of fighting men. The Ammonites came out and drew up in battle formation at the entrance to their city gate, while the Arameans of Zobah and Rehob and the men of Tob and Maacah were by themselves in the open country. Joab saw that there were battle lines in front of him and behind him; so he selected some of the best troops in Israel and deployed them against the Arameans. He put the rest of the men under the command of Abishai his brother and deployed them against the Ammonites. 암몬 사람들은 자기들이 다윗에게 미움을 사게 된 줄을 알았다. 암몬 사람들은 사람을 보내어서, 벳르홉의 시리아 사람과 소바의 시리아 사람에게서 보병 이만 명과, 마아가의 왕에게서 천 명과, 돕 사람들에게서 만 이천 명을 용병으로 고용하였다. 다윗은 이 소식을 듣고, 요압에게 전투부대를 맡겨서 출동시켰다. 암몬 사람도 나와서, 성문 앞에서 전열을 갖추었으며, 소바와 르홉의 시리아 사람들과 돕과 마아가의 용병들도 각각 들녘에서 전열을 갖추었다. 요압은 적이 자기 부대의 앞뒤에서 전열을 갖추어 포진한 것을 보고, 이스라엘의 모든 정예병 가운데서 더 엄격하게 정예병을 뽑아서, 시리아 군대와 싸울 수 있도록 전열을 갖추었다. 남은 병력은 자기의 아우 아비새에게 맡겨, 암몬 군대와 싸우도록 전열을 갖추게 하고서,

Joab said, "If the Arameans are too strong for me, then you are to come to my rescue; but if the Ammonites are too strong for you, then I will come to rescue you. Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people and the cities of our God. The LORD will do what is good in his sight." Then Joab and the troops with him advanced to fight the Arameans, and they fled before him. When the Ammonites saw that the Arameans were fleeing, they fled before Abishai and went inside the city. So Joab returned from fighting the Ammonites and came to Jerusalem. After the Arameans saw that they had been routed by Israel, they regrouped. 이렇게 말하였다. "시리아 군대가 나보다 더 강하면, 네가 와서 나를 도와라. 그러나 암몬 군대가 너보다 더 강하면, 내가 가서 너를 돕겠다. 용기를 내어라. 용감하게 싸워서 우리가 우리 민족을 지키고, 우리 하나님의 성읍을 지키자. 주님께서 좋게 여기시는 대로 이루어 주실 것이다." 그런 다음에 요압이 그의 부대를 거느리고 시리아 사람들과 싸우러 나아가니, 시리아 군인들이 요압 앞에서 도망하여 버렸다. 암몬 군인들은 시리아 군인들이 도망하는 것을 보고서, 그들도 아비새 앞에서 도망하여, 성으로 들어가 버렸다. 요압은 암몬 군대와 싸우기를 그치고, 예루살렘으로 돌아왔다. 시리아 군인들은 자기들이 이스라엘에게 패한 것을 알고서, 온 군대를 다시 집결시켰다.

Hadadezer had Arameans brought from beyond the River ; they went to Helam, with Shobach the commander of Hadadezer's army leading them. When David was told of this, he gathered all Israel, crossed the Jordan and went to Helam. The Arameans formed their battle lines to meet David and fought against him. But they fled before Israel, and David killed seven hundred of their charioteers and forty thousand of their foot soldiers. He also struck down Shobach the commander of their army, and he died there. When all the kings who were vassals of Hadadezer saw that they had been defeated by Israel, they made peace with the Israelites and became subject to them. So the Arameans were afraid to help the Ammonites anymore. 그 때에 하닷에셀이 사람을 보내어서, 유프라테스 강 동쪽에 있는 시리아 군대를 동원시켰으므로, 그들이 헬람으로 왔다. 하닷에셀의 부하 소박 사령관이 그들을 지휘하였다. 다윗이 이 소식을 듣고, 온 이스라엘 군대를 모아서 거느리고, 요단 강을 건너서, 헬람으로 진군하였다. 시리아 군대가 다윗과 싸우려고 전열을 갖추고 있다가, 맞붙어 싸웠으나, 시리아는 이스라엘 앞에서 도망하고 말았다. 다윗은 시리아 군대를 쳐서, 병거를 모는 칠백 명과 기마병 사만 명을 죽이고, 소박 사령관도 쳐서, 그를 그 자리에서 죽였다. 하닷에셀의 부하인 모든 왕은, 자기들이 이스라엘에게 패한 것을 알고서, 이스라엘과 화해한 뒤에, 이스라엘을 섬겼다. 그 뒤로 시리아는, 이스라엘이 두려워서, 다시는 암몬 사람을 돕지 못하였다.
