사무엘하 11장

 

In the spring, at the time when kings go off to war, David sent Joab out with the king's men and the whole Israelite army. They destroyed the Ammonites and besieged Rabbah. But David remained in Jerusalem. One evening David got up from his bed and walked around on the roof of the palace. From the roof he saw a woman bathing. The woman was very beautiful, and David sent someone to find out about her. The man said, "Isn't this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" Then David sent messengers to get her. She came to him, and he slept with her. (She had purified herself from her uncleanness.) Then she went back home. The woman conceived and sent word to David, saying, "I am pregnant." 그 다음 해 봄에, 왕들이 출전하는 때가 되자, 다윗은 요압에게 자기의 부하들과 온 이스라엘의 군인들을 맡겨서 출전시켰다. 그들은 암몬 사람을 무찌르고, 랍바를 포위하였다. 그러나 다윗은 예루살렘에 머물러 있었다. 어느 날 저녁에, 다윗은 잠깐 눈을 붙였다가 일어나, 왕궁의 옥상에 올라가서 거닐었다. 그 때에 그는 한 여인이 목욕하는 모습을 옥상에서 내려다 보았다. 그 여인은 아주 아름다웠다. 다윗은 신하를 보내서, 그 여인이 누구인지 알아 보게 하였다. 다녀온 신하가, 그 여인은 엘리암의 딸로서, 헷 사람 우리야의 아내 밧세바라고 하였다. 그런데도 다윗은 사람을 보내어서 그 여인을 데려왔다. 밧세바가 다윗에게로 오니, 다윗은 그 여인과 정을 통하였다. （그 여인은 마침 부정한 몸을 깨끗하게 씻고 난 다음이었다.） 그런 다음에 밧세바는 다시 자기의 집으로 돌아갔다. 얼마 뒤에 그 여인은 자기가 임신한 것을 알고, 다윗에게 사람을 보내서, 자기가 임신하였다는 사실을 알렸다.

So David sent this word to Joab: "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent him to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked him how Joab was, how the soldiers were and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house and wash your feet." So Uriah left the palace, and a gift from the king was sent after him. But Uriah slept at the entrance to the palace with all his master's servants and did not go down to his house. When David was told, "Uriah did not go home," he asked him, "Haven't you just come from a distance? Why didn't you go home?" 다윗이 그 소식을 듣고는, 요압에게 전갈을 보내서, 헷 사람 우리야를 왕궁으로 보내게 하였다. 요압이 우리야를 다윗에게 보내니, 우리야가 다윗에게로 왔다. 다윗은 요압의 안부와 군인들의 안부를 묻고, 싸움터의 형편도 물었다. 그런 다음에 다윗은 우리야에게 말하였다. "이제 그대의 집으로 내려가서 목욕을 하고 쉬어라." 우리야가 어전에서 물러가니, 왕은 먹을 것을 함께 딸려서 보냈다. 그러나 우리야는 자기 상전의 종들과 함께 대궐 문간에 누워서 자고, 자기 집으로는 내려가지 않았다. 다윗은 우리야가 자기 집으로 내려가지 않았다는 말을 듣고, 원정 길에서 돌아왔는데, 왜 집으로 내려가지 않는지를, 우리야에게 물었다.

Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah are staying in tents, and my master Joab and my lord's men are camped in the open fields. How could I go to my house to eat and drink and lie with my wife? As surely as you live, I will not do such a thing!" Then David said to him, "Stay here one more day, and tomorrow I will send you back." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day and the next. At David's invitation, he ate and drank with him, and David made him drunk. But in the evening Uriah went out to sleep on his mat among his master's servants; he did not go home. In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah. In it he wrote, "Put Uriah in the front line where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die." 우리야가 다윗에게 대답하였다. "언약궤와 이스라엘과 유다가 모두 장막을 치고 지내며, 저의 상관이신 요압 장군과 임금님의 모든 신하가 벌판에서 진을 치고 있습니다. 그런데 어찌, 저만 홀로 집으로 돌아가서, 먹고 마시고, 나의 아내와 잠자리를 같이 할 수가 있겠습니까? 임금님이 확실히 살아 계심과, 또 임금님의 생명을 걸고 맹세합니다. 그런 일은 제가 하지 않겠습니다." 다윗이 우리야에게 말하였다. "그렇다면, 오늘은 날도 저물었으니, 여기에서 지내도록 하여라. 그러나 내일은 내가 너를 보내겠다." 그리하여 우리야는 그 날 밤을 예루살렘에서 묵었다. 그 다음날, 다윗이 그를 불러다가, 자기 앞에서 먹고 마시고 취하게 하였다. 그러나 저녁때에 그는 여전히 왕의 신하들과 함께 잠자리에 들고, 자기 집으로는 내려가지 않았다. 다음날 아침에 다윗은 요압에게 편지를 써서, 우리야의 편에 보냈다. 다윗은 그 편지에 다음과 같이 썼다. "너희는 우리야를, 전투가 가장 치열한 전선으로 앞세우고 나아갔다가, 너희만 그의 뒤로 물러나서, 그가 맞아서 죽게 하여라."

So while Joab had the city under siege, he put Uriah at a place where he knew the strongest defenders were. When the men of the city came out and fought against Joab, some of the men in David's army fell; moreover, Uriah the Hittite died. Joab sent David a full account of the battle. He instructed the messenger: "When you have finished giving the king this account of the battle, the king's anger may flare up, and he may ask you, 'Why did you get so close to the city to fight? Didn't you know they would shoot arrows from the wall? 요압은 적의 성을 포위하고 있다가, 자기가 알고 있는 대로 적의 저항 세력이 가장 강한 곳에 우리야를 배치하였다. 그 성의 사람들이 나가서 요압의 군인들과 싸우는 동안에, 다윗의 부하들 쪽에서 군인 몇 사람이 쓰러져서 죽었고, 그 때에 헷 사람 우리야도 전사하였다. 요압이 다윗에게 사람을 보내서 전쟁의 상황을 모두 전하였다. 요압은 전령에게 이렇게 지시하였다. "네가 이번 전쟁의 상황을 모두 임금님께 말씀드리고 났을 때에, 임금님이 화를 내시며 네게 말씀하시기를 '너희가 왜 그토록 성에 가까이 가서 싸웠느냐? 적의 성벽 위에서 적병들이 활을 쏠 줄도 몰랐단 말이냐?

Who killed Abimelech son of Jerub-Besheth ? Didn't a woman throw an upper millstone on him from the wall, so that he died in Thebez? Why did you get so close to the wall?' If he asks you this, then say to him, 'Also, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead.' " The messenger set out, and when he arrived he told David everything Joab had sent him to say. The messenger said to David, "The men overpowered us and came out against us in the open, but we drove them back to the entrance to the city gate. Then the archers shot arrows at your servants from the wall, and some of the king's men died. Moreover, your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead." David told the messenger, "Say this to Joab: 'Don't let this upset you; the sword devours one as well as another. Press the attack against the city and destroy it.' Say this to encourage Joab." 여룹베셋의 아들 아비멜렉을 누가 쳐서 죽였느냐? 어떤 여자가 성벽 위에서 그의 머리 위로 맷돌 위짝을 던져서, 그가 데벳스에서 죽지 않았느냐? 그런 것을 알면서, 너희가 무엇 때문에 그토록 성벽에 가까이 갔느냐?' 하시면, 너는 '임금님의 부하 헷 사람 우리야도 죽었습니다' 하고 대답하여라." 전령이 떠나, 다윗에게 이르러서, 요압이 심부름을 보내면서 일러준 말을 모두 전하였다. 전령은 다윗에게 이렇게 말하였다. "우리의 적은 우리보다 강하였습니다. 적이 우리와 싸우려고 평지로 나왔으므로, 우리는 적들을 성 안으로 밀어 넣으려고, 성문 가까이까지 적들을 밀어붙였습니다. 그 때에 성벽 위에 있는 적들이 임금님의 부하들에게 활을 쏘았습니다. 그래서 임금님의 부하들 가운데서 몇 사람이 죽었고, 임금님의 부하인 헷 사람 우리야도 죽었습니다." 그러자 다윗이 전령에게 말하였다. "너는 요압에게, 칼은 이 편도 죽이고 저 편도 죽이기 마련이니, 이번 일로 조금도 걱정하지 말라고 전하여라. 오히려 그 성을 계속 맹렬히 공격하여서 무너뜨리라고 전하여, 요압이 용기를 잃지 않도록 하여라."

When Uriah's wife heard that her husband was dead, she mourned for him. After the time of mourning was over, David had her brought to his house, and she became his wife and bore him a son. But the thing David had done displeased the LORD. 우리야의 아내는, 우리야가 죽었다는 소식을 듣자, 자기의 남편을 생각하여 슬피 울었다. 애도하는 기간이 지나니, 다윗이 사람을 보내어서, 그 여인을 왕궁으로 데려왔다. 그 여인은 이렇게 하여서 다윗의 아내가 되었고, 그들 사이에서 아들이 태어났다. 그러나 주님께서 보시기에 다윗이 한 이번 일은 아주 악하였다.
