여호수아 20장

 

Then the LORD said to Joshua: "Tell the Israelites to designate the cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses, so that anyone who kills a person accidentally and unintentionally may flee there and find protection from the avenger of blood. "When he flees to one of these cities, he is to stand in the entrance of the city gate and state his case before the elders of that city. Then they are to admit him into their city and give him a place to live with them. If the avenger of blood pursues him, they must not surrender the one accused, because he killed his neighbor unintentionally and without malice aforethought. 주님께서 여호수아에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 이스라엘 자손에게 이렇게 일러라. '내가 모세를 시켜 너희에게 말한 도피성을 지정하여, 고의가 아니라 실수로 사람을 죽인 사람을 그 곳으로 피하게 하여라. 그 곳은 죽은 사람에 대한 복수를 하려는 사람을 피하는 곳이 될 것이다. 살인자는 이 성읍들 가운데 한 곳으로 가서, 그 성문 어귀에 서서, 그 성의 장로들에게 자신이 저지른 사고를 설명하여야 한다. 그러면 그들은 그를 성 안으로 받아들이고, 그가 있을 곳을 마련해 주어, 함께 살도록 해야 한다. 죽은 사람에 대한 복수를 하려는 사람이 뒤쫓아온다 할지라도, 그 사람의 손에 살인자를 넘겨 주어서는 안 된다. 그가 전부터 그의 이웃을 미워한 것이 아니고, 실수로 그를 죽였기 때문이다.

He is to stay in that city until he has stood trial before the assembly and until the death of the high priest who is serving at that time. Then he may go back to his own home in the town from which he fled." So they set apart Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath Arba (that is, Hebron) in the hill country of Judah. On the east side of the Jordan of Jericho they designated Bezer in the desert on the plateau in the tribe of Reuben, Ramoth in Gilead in the tribe of Gad, and Golan in Bashan in the tribe of Manasseh. Any of the Israelites or any alien living among them who killed someone accidentally could flee to these designated cities and not be killed by the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly. 그 살인자는 그 성읍에 머물러 살다가, 회중 앞에 서서 재판을 받은 다음, 그 당시의 대제사장이 죽은 뒤에야 자기의 성읍 곧 자기가 도망 나왔던 성읍에 있는 자기의 집으로 돌아갈 수 있다.'" 그래서 그들은 요단 강 서쪽 지역에서는 납달리 산간지방에 있는 갈릴리의 게데스와 에브라임 산간지방의 세겜과 유다 산간지방의 기럇아르바 곧 헤브론을 도피성으로 구별하여 지정하였다. 또 여리고 동쪽, 요단 강 동쪽 지역에서는 르우벤 지파의 평지 광야에 있는 베셀과 갓 지파의 길르앗 라못과 므낫세 지파의 바산 골란을 도피성으로 구별하여 지정하였다. 이 성읍들이, 이스라엘의 모든 자손이나 그들 가운데 살고 있는 외국인 가운데서 누구든지 실수로 사람을 죽였을 때에, 그 곳으로 피하여 회중 앞에 설 때까지, 죽은 사람에 대한 복수를 하려는 사람의 손에 죽지 않도록 하려고, 구별하여 지정한 도피성이다.
