Then the king called together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. He went up to the temple of the LORD with the men of Judah, the people of Jerusalem, the priests and the prophets--all the people from the least to the greatest. He read in their hearing all the words of the Book of the Covenant, which had been found in the temple of the LORD. The king stood by the pillar and renewed the covenant in the presence of the LORD -to follow the LORD and keep his commands, regulations and decrees with all his heart and all his soul, thus confirming the words of the covenant written in this book. Then all the people pledged themselves to the covenant. The king ordered Hilkiah the high priest, the priests next in rank and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal and Asherah and all the starry hosts. He burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of the Kidron Valley and took the ashes to Bethel. He did away with the pagan priests appointed by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the towns of Judah and on those around Jerusalem--those who burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations and to all the starry hosts. 왕이 사람을 보내어, 유다와 예루살렘의 모든 장로를 소집하였다. 왕이 주님의 성전에 올라갈 때에, 유다의 모든 백성과 예루살렘의 모든 주민과 제사장들과 예언자들과, 어른으로부터 아이에 이르기까지, 모든 백성이 그와 함께 성전으로 올라갔다. 그 때에 왕은, 주님의 성전에서 발견된 언약책에 적힌 모든 말씀을, 크게 읽어서 사람들에게 들려 주도록 하였다. 왕은 기둥 곁에 서서, 주님을 따를 것과, 온 마음과 목숨을 다 바쳐 그의 계명과 법도와 율례를 지킬 것과, 이 책에 적힌 언약의 말씀을 지킬 것을 맹세하는 언약을, 주님 앞에서 세웠다. 온 백성도 그 언약에 동참하였다. 왕은 힐기야 대제사장과 부제사장들과 문지기들에게, 바알과 아세라와 하늘의 별을 섬기려고 하여 만든 기구들을, 주님의 성전으로부터 밖으로 내놓도록 명령하였다. 그리고 그는, 예루살렘 바깥 기드론 들판에서 그것들을 모두 불태우고, 그 태운 재를 베델로 옮겼다. 그는 또, 유다의 역대 왕들이 유다의 성읍들과 예루살렘 주위에 있는 산당에서 분향하려고 임명한, 우상을 숭배하는 제사장들을 내쫓았다. 그리고 바알과 태양과 달과 성좌들과 하늘의 별에게 제사지내는 사람들을 모두 몰아냈다.

He took the Asherah pole from the temple of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem and burned it there. He ground it to powder and scattered the dust over the graves of the common people. He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes, which were in the temple of the LORD and where women did weaving for Asherah. Josiah brought all the priests from the towns of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He broke down the shrines at the gates--at the entrance to the Gate of Joshua, the city governor, which is on the left of the city gate. Although the priests of the high places did not serve at the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests. He removed from the entrance to the temple of the LORD the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the room of an official named Nathan-Melech. Josiah then burned the chariots dedicated to the sun. He pulled down the altars the kings of Judah had erected on the roof near the upper room of Ahaz, and the altars Manasseh had built in the two courts of the temple of the LORD. He removed them from there, smashed them to pieces and threw the rubble into the Kidron Valley. The king also desecrated the high places that were east of Jerusalem on the south of the Hill of Corruption--the ones Solomon king of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the vile goddess of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the vile god of Moab, and for Molech the detestable god of the people of Ammon. Josiah smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles and covered the sites with human bones. Even the altar at Bethel, the high place made by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin--even that altar and high place he demolished. Then Josiah looked around, and when he saw the tombs that were there on the hillside, he had the bones removed from them and burned on the altar to defile it, in accordance with the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who foretold these things. The king asked, "What is that tombstone I see?" The men of the city said, "It marks the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and pronounced against the altar of Bethel the very things you have done to it." "Leave it alone," he said. "Don't let anyone disturb his bones." So they spared his bones and those of the prophet who had come from Samaria. Just as he had done at Bethel, Josiah removed and defiled all the shrines at the high places that the kings of Israel had built in the towns of Samaria that had provoked the LORD to anger. Josiah slaughtered all the priests of those high places on the altars and burned human bones on them. Then he went back to Jerusalem. 요시야는 또 산 위에 무덤이 있는 것을 보고, 사람을 보내어 그 무덤 속의 뼈들을 꺼내어서, 제단 위에 모아 놓고 불태웠다. 그렇게 하여 그 제단들을 부정하게 만들었다. 그래서 한때 하나님의 사람이 이 일을 두고 예언한 주님의 말씀대로 되었다. 요시야가 물었다. The king gave this order to all the people: "Celebrate the Passover to the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant." Not since the days of the judges who led Israel, nor throughout the days of the kings of Israel and the kings of Judah, had any such Passover been observed. But in the eighteenth year of King Josiah, this Passover was celebrated to the LORD in Jerusalem. Furthermore, Josiah got rid of the mediums and spiritists, the household gods, the idols and all the other detestable things seen in Judah and Jerusalem. This he did to fulfill the requirements of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had discovered in the temple of the LORD. Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the LORD as he did--with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses. 왕이 온 백성에게 명령을 내렸다. "이 언약책에 기록된 대로, 주 당신들의 하나님께 감사드리는 유월절을 준비하십시오." 사사들이 이스라엘을 다스리던 시대로부터 이스라엘과 유다 왕들의 시대에 이르기까지, 어느 시대에도 이와 같은 유월절을 지킨 일은 없었다. 요시야 왕 제 십팔년에 이르러서야, 비로소 예루살렘에서 주님을 기리는 유월절을 지켰다. 요시야는 대제사장 힐기야가 주님의 성전에서 발견한 책에 기록된 율법의 말씀을 지키려고, 유다 땅과 예루살렘에서 신접한 자와 박수와 드라빔과 우상과 모든 혐오스러운 것들을, 눈에 보이는 대로 다 없애 버렸다. 이와 같이 마음을 다 기울이고 생명을 다하고 힘을 다 기울여 모세의 율법을 지키며 주님께로 돌이킨 왕은, 이전에도 없었고 그 뒤로도 다시 나타나지 않았다.

Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the heat of his fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke him to anger. So the LORD said, "I will remove Judah also from my presence as I removed Israel, and I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and this temple, about which I said, 'There shall my Name be.' " As for the other events of Josiah's reign, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? While Josiah was king, Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt went up to the Euphrates River to help the king of Assyria. King Josiah marched out to meet him in battle, but Neco faced him and killed him at Megiddo. Josiah's servants brought his body in a chariot from Megiddo to Jerusalem and buried him in his own tomb. And the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah and anointed him and made him king in place of his father. 그러나 주님께서는 유다에게 쏟으시려던 그 불타는 진노를 거두어들이시지는 않으셨다. 므낫세가 주님을 너무나도 격노하시게 하였기 때문이다. 그래서 주님께서는 이렇게 말씀하셨다. Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother's name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah. He did evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as his fathers had done. Pharaoh Neco put him in chains at Riblah in the land of Hamath so that he might not reign in Jerusalem, and he imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold. Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah and changed Eliakim's name to Jehoiakim. But he took Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, and there he died. Jehoiakim paid Pharaoh Neco the silver and gold he demanded. In order to do so, he taxed the land and exacted the silver and gold from the people of the land according to their assessments. 여호아하스는 왕이 되었을 때에 스물세 살이었다. 그는 예루살렘에서 석 달 동안 다스렸다. 그의 어머니 하무달은 리블라 출신인 예레미야의 딸이다. 여호아하스는 조상의 악한 행위를 본받아, 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 하였다. 이집트의 바로 느고 왕이 그를 하맛 땅에 있는 리블라에서 사로잡아, 예루살렘에서 다스리지 못하게 하고, 유다가 이집트에 은 백 달란트와 금 한 달란트를 조공으로 바치게 하였다. 또 바로 느고 왕은 요시야를 대신하여 요시야의 아들 엘리야김을 왕으로 삼고, 그의 이름을 여호야김으로 바꾸게 하였다. 여호아하스는 이집트로 끌려가, 그 곳에서 죽었다. 여호야김은 바로의 요구대로 그에게 은과 금을 주었다. 그는 바로의 명령대로 은을 주려고 백성에게 세금을 부과하였고, 백성들은 각자의 재산 정도에 따라 배정된 액수대로, 바로 느고에게 줄 은과 금을 내놓아야 하였다.

Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother's name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah; she was from Rumah. And he did evil in the eyes of the LORD, just as his fathers had done. 여호야김은 왕이 되었을 때에 스물다섯 살이었다. 예루살렘에서 열한 해 동안 다스렸다. 그의 어머니 스비다는 루마 출신 브다야의 딸이다. 그는 조상의 악한 행위를 본받아, 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 하였다.
