열왕기하 19장

 

When King Hezekiah heard this, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and went into the temple of the LORD. He sent Eliakim the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and the leading priests, all wearing sackcloth, to the prophet Isaiah son of Amoz. They told him, "This is what Hezekiah says: This day is a day of distress and rebuke and disgrace, as when children come to the point of birth and there is no strength to deliver them. It may be that the LORD your God will hear all the words of the field commander, whom his master, the king of Assyria, has sent to ridicule the living God, and that he will rebuke him for the words the LORD your God has heard. Therefore pray for the remnant that still survives." When King Hezekiah's officials came to Isaiah, 히스기야 왕도 이 말을 듣고, 울분을 참지 못하여 자기의 옷을 찢고, 베옷을 두르고, 주님의 성전으로 들어갔다. 그는 엘리야김 궁내대신과 셉나 서기관과 원로 제사장들에게 베옷을 두르게 한 뒤에, 이 사람들을 아모스의 아들 이사야 예언자에게 보냈다. 그들이 이사야에게 가서 히스기야 왕의 말씀이라고 하면서, 이렇게 말하였다. "오늘은 환난과 징계와 굴욕의 날입니다. 아이를 낳으려 하나, 낳을 힘이 없는 산모와도 같습니다. 주 예언자님의 하나님께서는, 랍사게가 한 말을 다 들으셨을 것입니다. 랍사게는, 살아 계신 하나님을 모욕하려고, 그의 상전인 앗시리아 왕이 보낸 자입니다. 주 예언자님의 하나님께서 그가 하는 말을 들으셨으니, 그를 심판하실 것입니다. 예언자님께서는 여기에 남아 있는 우리들이 구원받도록 기도하여 주십시오." 히스기야 왕의 신하들이 이사야에게 가서 이렇게 말하니,

Isaiah said to them, "Tell your master, 'This is what the LORD says: Do not be afraid of what you have heard--those words with which the underlings of the king of Assyria have blasphemed me. Listen! I am going to put such a spirit in him that when he hears a certain report, he will return to his own country, and there I will have him cut down with the sword.' " When the field commander heard that the king of Assyria had left Lachish, he withdrew and found the king fighting against Libnah. Now Sennacherib received a report that Tirhakah, the Cushite king of Egypt , was marching out to fight against him. So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah with this word: "Say to Hezekiah king of Judah: Do not let the god you depend on deceive you when he says, 'Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.' 이사야가 그들에게 대답하였다. "당신들의 왕에게 이렇게 전하십시오. 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. '앗시리아 왕의 부하들이 나를 모욕하는 말을 네가 들었다고 하여, 그렇게 두려워하지 말아라. 내가 그에게 한 영을 내려 보내어, 그가 뜬소문을 듣고 자기의 나라로 돌아가게 할 것이며, 거기에서 칼에 맞아 죽게 할 것이다.'" 랍사게는 자기의 왕이 라기스를 떠났다는 소식을 듣고 후퇴하여, 립나를 치고 있는 앗시리아 왕과 합세하였다. 그 때에 앗시리아 왕은 에티오피아의 디르하가 왕이 자기와 싸우려고 출전하였다는 말을 들었다. 그리하여 그는 히스기야에게 다시 사신들을 보내어, 이렇게 말하였다. "너희는 유다의 히스기야 왕에게 이렇게 전하여라. '네가 의지하는 네 하나님이 예루살렘을 앗시리아 왕의 손에 넘어 가게 하지 않을 것이라고 해도, 너는 그 말에 속지 말아라.

Surely you have heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all the countries, destroying them completely. And will you be delivered? Did the gods of the nations that were destroyed by my forefathers deliver them: the gods of Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the people of Eden who were in Tel Assar? Where is the king of Hamath, the king of Arpad, the king of the city of Sepharvaim, or of Hena or Ivvah?" Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it out before the LORD. And Hezekiah prayed to the LORD : "O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and earth. 너는 앗시리아의 왕들이 다른 모든 나라를 멸하려고 어떻게 하였는지를 잘 들었을 것이다. 그런데 너만은 구원을 받을 수 있을 것이라고 믿느냐? 나의 선왕들이 멸망시킨 고산과 하란과 레셉과, 그리고 들라살에 있는 에덴 족을 그 민족들의 신들이 구하여 낼 수 있었느냐? 하맛의 왕, 아르밧의 왕, 스발와임 도성의 왕, 그리고 헤나와 이와의 왕들이 모두 어디로 갔느냐?'" 히스기야는 사신들에게서 이 편지를 받아 읽었다. 그리고는 주님의 성전으로 올라가서, 주님 앞에 편지를 펴 놓은 뒤에, 주님께 기도하였다. "그룹들 위에 계시는 주 이스라엘의 하나님, 주님만이 이 세상의 모든 나라를 다스리시는 오직 한 분뿐인 하나님이시며, 하늘과 땅을 만드신 분이십니다.

Give ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God. "It is true, O LORD, that the Assyrian kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by men's hands. Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God." Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I have heard your prayer concerning Sennacherib king of Assyria. 주님, 귀를 기울여 들어 주십시오. 주님, 눈여겨 보아 주십시오. 살아 계신 하나님을 모욕하는 말을 전한 저 산헤립의 망언을 잊지 마십시오. 주님, 참으로 앗시리아의 왕들이 여러 나라와 그 땅을 마구 짓밟아 버렸습니다. 여러 민족이 믿는 신들을 모두 불에 던져 태웠습니다. 물론 그것들은 참 신이 아니라, 다만 나무와 돌로 만든 것이었기에, 앗시리아 왕들에게 멸망당할 수밖에 없었습니다마는, 주 우리의 하나님, 이제 그의 손에서 우리를 구원하여 주셔서, 세상의 모든 나라가, 오직 주님만이 홀로 주 하나님이심을 알게 하여 주십시오." 아모스의 아들 이사야가 히스기야에게 사람을 보내어, 이렇게 말하였다. "주 이스라엘의 하나님께서는, 임금님께서 앗시리아의 산헤립 왕의 일 때문에 주님께 올린 그 기도를 주님께서 들으셨다고 말씀하시면서,

This is the word that the LORD has spoken against him: " 'The Virgin Daughter of Zion despises you and mocks you. The Daughter of Jerusalem tosses her head as you flee. Who is it you have insulted and blasphemed? Against whom have you raised your voice and lifted your eyes in pride? Against the Holy one of Israel! By your messengers you have heaped insults on the Lord. And you have said, "With my many chariots I have ascended the heights of the mountains, the utmost heights of Lebanon. I have cut down its tallest cedars, the choicest of its pines. I have reached its remotest parts, the finest of its forests. I have dug wells in foreign lands and drunk the water there. With the soles of my feet I have dried up all the streams of Egypt." " 'Have you not heard? Long ago I ordained it. In days of old I planned it; now I have brought it to pass, that you have turned fortified cities into piles of stone. 앗시리아 왕을 두고 다음과 같이 말씀하셨습니다. '처녀 딸 시온이 오히려 너 산헤립을 경멸하고 비웃을 것이다. 딸 예루살렘이 오히려 물러나는 네 뒷모습을 보면서 머리를 흔들 것이다. 네가 감히 누구를 모욕하고 멸시하였느냐? 네가 누구에게 큰소리를 쳤느냐? 나 이스라엘의 거룩한 자에게 감히 네 눈을 부릅떴느냐? 네가 전령들을 보내어 나 주를 조롱하며 말하기를, 내가 수많은 병거를 몰아 높은 산 이 꼭대기에서 저 꼭대기까지 레바논의 막다른 곳까지 깊숙히 들어가서 키 큰 백향목과 아름다운 잣나무를 베어 버리고, 울창한 숲 속 깊숙히 들어가서 그 끝까지 들어갔고, 그리고는 땅을 파서 다른 나라의 물을 마시며, 발바닥으로 밟기만 하고서도 이집트의 모든 강물을 말렸다고 하였다. 그러나 산헤립아, 너는 듣지 못하였느냐? 그런 일은 이미 내가 오래 전에 결정한 것들이고, 이미 내가 아득한 옛날부터 계획한 것들이다. 이제 내가 그것을 이루었을 뿐이다. 그래서 네가 견고한 요새들을 돌무더기로 만들고,

Their people, drained of power, are dismayed and put to shame. They are like plants in the field, like tender green shoots, like grass sprouting on the roof, scorched before it grows up. " 'But I know where you stay and when you come and go and how you rage against me. Because you rage against me and your insolence has reached my ears, I will put my hook in your nose and my bit in your mouth, and I will make you return by the way you came.' "This will be the sign for you, O Hezekiah: "This year you will eat what grows by itself, and the second year what springs from that. But in the third year sow and reap, plant vineyards and eat their fruit. Once more a remnant of the house of Judah will take root below and bear fruit above. 여러 민족의 간담을 서늘하게 하고, 공포에 질리게 하고, 부끄럽게 하였다. 민족들은 초목과 같고 자라기도 전에 말라 버리는 풀포기나 지붕 위의 잡초와 같았다. 나는 다 알고 있다. 네가 앉고 서는 것, 네가 나가고 들어오는 것, 네가 내게 분노를 품고 있다는 것도, 나는 모두 다 알고 있다. 네가 내게 품고 있는 분노와 오만을, 이미 오래 전에 내가 직접 들었기에, 내가 네 코에 쇠 갈고리를 꿰고, 네 입에 재갈을 물려, 네가 왔던 그 길로 너를 되돌아가게 하겠다. 히스기야야, 너에게 증거를 보이겠다. 백성이 금년에 들에서 저절로 자라난 곡식을 먹고, 내년에도 들에서 저절로 자라난 곡식을 먹을 것이다. 그러나 내후년에는 백성이 씨를 뿌리고 곡식을 거둘 것이며, 포도밭을 가꾸어서 그 열매를 먹게 될 것이다. 유다 사람들 가운데서 환난을 피하여 살아 남은 사람들이 다시 땅 아래로 깊이 뿌리를 내리고, 위로 열매를 맺을 것이다.

For out of Jerusalem will come a remnant, and out of Mount Zion a band of survivors. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this. "Therefore this is what the LORD says concerning the king of Assyria: "He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield or build a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city, declares the LORD. I will defend this city and save it, for my sake and for the sake of David my servant." That night the angel of the LORD went out and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp. When the people got up the next morning--there were all the dead bodies! 살아 남은 사람들이 예루살렘에서부터 나오고, 환난을 피한 사람들이 시온 산에서부터 나올 것이다. 나 주의 열심이 이 일을 이룰 것이다.' 그러므로 앗시리아의 왕을 두고, 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. '그는 이 도성에 들어오지 못하며, 이리로 활 한 번 쏴 보지도 못할 것이다. 방패를 앞세워 접근하지도 못하며, 성을 공격할 흙 언덕을 쌓지도 못할 것이다. 그는 왔던 길로 되돌아간다. 이 도성 안으로는 결코 들어오지 못한다. 이것은 나 주의 말이다. 나는 내 명성을 지키기 위해서라도 이 도성을 보호하여 구원하고, 내 종 다윗을 보아서라도 그렇게 하겠다.'" 그 날 밤에 주님의 천사가 나아가서, 앗시리아 군의 진영에서 십팔만 오천 명을 쳐죽였다. 다음날 아침이 밝았을 때에 그들은 모두 주검으로 발견되었다.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned to Nineveh and stayed there. One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer cut him down with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon his son succeeded him as king. 앗시리아의 산헤립 왕이 그 곳을 떠나, 니느웨 도성으로 돌아가서 머물렀다. 그러던 어느 날, 그가 자기의 신 니스록의 신전에서 예배하고 있을 때에, 그의 아들 아드람멜렉과 사레셀이 그를 칼로 쳐죽이고, 아라랏 땅으로 도망하였다. 그의 아들 에살핫돈이 뒤를 이어 왕이 되었다.
