열왕기하 18장

 

In the third year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Hezekiah son of Ahaz king of Judah began to reign. He was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem twenty-nine years. His mother's name was Abijah daughter of Zechariah. He did what was right in the eyes of the LORD, just as his father David had done. He removed the high places, smashed the sacred stones and cut down the Asherah poles. He broke into pieces the bronze snake Moses had made, for up to that time the Israelites had been burning incense to it. (It was called Nehushtan. ) Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel. He held fast to the LORD and did not cease to follow him; he kept the commands the LORD had given Moses. And the LORD was with him; he was successful in whatever he undertook. He rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him. From watchtower to fortified city, he defeated the Philistines, as far as Gaza and its territory. In King Hezekiah's fourth year, which was the seventh year of Hoshea son of Elah king of Israel, Shalmaneser king of Assyria marched against Samaria and laid siege to it. At the end of three years the Assyrians took it. So Samaria was captured in Hezekiah's sixth year, which was the ninth year of Hoshea king of Israel. 그는 주님에게만 매달려, 주님을 배반하는 일이 없이, 주님께서 모세에게 명하신 계명들을 준수하였다. 어디를 가든지, 주님께서 그와 같이 계시므로, 그는 늘 성공하였다. 그는 앗시리아 왕에게 반기를 들고, 그를 섬기지 않았다. 그는 가사와 그 전 경계선까지, 또 망대로부터 요새화된 성읍에 이르기까지, 블레셋을 모두 쳐부수었다. 히스기야 왕 제 사년 곧 이스라엘의 엘라의 아들 호세아 왕 제 칠년에, 앗시리아의 살만에셀 왕이 사마리아를 포위하여, 세 해 만에 그 도성을 함락시켰다. 곧 히스기야 제 육년과, 이스라엘의 호세아 왕 제 구년에 그들이 사마리아를 함락시킨 것이다.

The king of Assyria deported Israel to Assyria and settled them in Halah, in Gozan on the Habor River and in towns of the Medes. This happened because they had not obeyed the LORD their God, but had violated his covenant--all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded. They neither listened to the commands nor carried them out. In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah's reign, Sennacherib king of Assyria attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them. So Hezekiah king of Judah sent this message to the king of Assyria at Lachish: "I have done wrong. Withdraw from me, and I will pay whatever you demand of me." The king of Assyria exacted from Hezekiah king of Judah three hundred talents of silver and thirty talents of gold. So Hezekiah gave him all the silver that was found in the temple of the LORD and in the treasuries of the royal palace. 앗시리아 왕은 이스라엘 사람들을 앗시리아로 사로잡아 가서, 그들을 할라와 고산 강 가의 하볼과 메대의 여러 성읍에 이주시켰다. 이렇게 된 것은, 그들이 자기들의 하나님이신 주님의 말씀을 듣지 않고, 그의 언약을 깨뜨렸으며, 주님의 종 모세가 명령한 모든 것을, 순종하지도 않고 실천하지도 않았기 때문이다. 히스기야 왕 제 십사년에 앗시리아의 산헤립 왕이 올라와서, 요새화된 유다의 모든 성읍을 공격하여 점령하였다. 그래서 유다의 히스기야 왕은 라기스에 와 있는 앗시리아 왕에게 전령을 보내어 말하였다. "우리가 잘못하였습니다. 철수만 해주시면, 요구하시는 것은 무엇이나 드리겠습니다." 그러자 앗시리아 왕은 유다의 히스기야 왕에게 은 삼백 달란트와 금 삼십 달란트를 요구하였다. 그리하여 히스기야는 주님의 성전과 왕궁의 보물 창고에 있는 은을 있는 대로 다 내주었다.

At this time Hezekiah king of Judah stripped off the gold with which he had covered the doors and doorposts of the temple of the LORD, and gave it to the king of Assyria. The king of Assyria sent his supreme commander, his chief officer and his field commander with a large army, from Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Washerman's Field. They called for the king; and Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went out to them. The field commander said to them, "Tell Hezekiah: " 'This is what the great king, the king of Assyria, says: on what are you basing this confidence of yours? You say you have strategy and military strength--but you speak only empty words. on whom are you depending, that you rebel against me? 그 때에 유다의 히스기야 왕은, 주님의 성전 문과 기둥에 자신이 직접 입힌 금을 모두 벗겨서, 앗시리아 왕에게 주었다. 그런데도 앗시리아 왕은 다르단과 랍사리스와 랍사게에게 많은 병력을 주어서, 라기스에서부터 예루살렘으로 올려보내어 히스기야 왕을 치게 하였다. 그들은 예루살렘으로 올라가서, 윗 저수지의 수로 곁에 있는 빨래터로 가는 큰 길 가에 포진하였다. 그들이 왕을 부르자, 힐기야의 아들 엘리야김 궁내대신과 셉나 서기관과 아삽의 아들 요아 역사기록관이 그들을 맞으러 나갔다. 랍사게가 그들에게 말하였다. "히스기야에게 전하여라. 위대한 왕이신 앗시리아의 임금님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. '네가 무엇을 믿고 이렇게 자신만만하냐? 전쟁을 할 전술도 없고, 군사력도 없으면서 입으로만 전쟁을 할 수 있다고 생각하느냐? 네가 지금 누구를 믿고 나에게 반역하느냐?

Look now, you are depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces a man's hand and wounds him if he leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who depend on him. And if you say to me, "We are depending on the LORD our God"-isn't he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying to Judah and Jerusalem, "You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem"? " 'Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses--if you can put riders on them! How can you repulse one officer of the least of my master's officials, even though you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen ? Furthermore, have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the LORD ? The LORD himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.' " 그러니 너는 부러진 갈대 지팡이 같은 이집트를 의지한다고 하지만, 그것을 믿고 붙드는 자는 손만 찔리게 될 것이다. 이집트의 바로 왕을 신뢰하는 자는 누구나 이와 같이 될 것이다. 너희는 또 나에게, 주 너희의 하나님을 의지한다고 말하겠지마는, 유다와 예루살렘에 사는 백성에게, 예루살렘에 있는 이 제단 앞에서만 경배하여야 한다고 하면서, 산당과 제단들을 모두 헐어 버린 것이, 바로 너 히스기야가 아니냐!' 이제 나의 상전이신 앗시리아의 임금님과 겨루어 보아라. 내가 너에게 말 이천 필을 준다고 한들, 네가 그 위에 탈 사람을 내놓을 수 있겠느냐? 그러니 네가 어찌 내 상전의 부하들 가운데서 하찮은 병사 하나라도 물리칠 수 있겠느냐? 그러면서도 병거와 기병의 지원을 받으려고 이집트를 의존하느냐? 이제 생각하여 보아라. 내가 이 곳을 쳐서 멸망시키려고 오면서, 어찌 너희가 섬기는 주님의 허락도 받지 않고 왔겠느냐? 너희의 주님께서 내게 말씀하시기를, 그 땅을 치러 올라가서, 그 곳을 멸망시키라고, 나에게 친히 이르셨다."

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna and Joah said to the field commander, "Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don't speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of the people on the wall." But the commander replied, "Was it only to your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the men sitting on the wall--who, like you, will have to eat their own filth and drink their own urine?" Then the commander stood and called out in Hebrew: "Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He cannot deliver you from my hand. Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust in the LORD when he says, 'The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.' 힐기야의 아들 엘리야김과 셉나와 요아가 랍사게에게 말하였다. "성벽 위에서 백성들이 듣고 있으니, 우리에게 유다 말로 말씀하지 말아 주십시오. 이 종들에게 시리아 말로 말씀하여 주십시오. 우리가 시리아 말을 알아듣습니다." 그러나 랍사게가 그들에게 대답하였다. "나의 상전께서, 나를 보내셔서, 이 말을 하게 하신 것은, 다만 너희의 상전과 너희만 들으라고 하신 것이 아니다. 너희와 함께, 자기가 눈 대변을 먹고 자기가 본 소변을 마실, 성벽 위에 앉아 있는 저 백성에게도 이 말을 전하라고 나를 보내셨다." 랍사게가 일어나서 유다 말로 크게 외쳤다. "너희는 위대한 왕이신 앗시리아의 임금님께서 하시는 말씀을 들어라! 임금님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. '히스기야에게 속지 말아라. 그는 너희를 내 손에서 구원해 낼 수 없다. 히스기야가 너희를 속여서, 너희의 주가 너희를 구원할 것이며, 이 도성을 앗시리아 왕의 손에 절대로 넘겨 주지 않으실 것이라고 말하면서, 너희로 주님을 의지하게 하려 하여도, 너희는 그 말을 믿지 말아라.

"Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and fig tree and drink water from his own cistern, until I come and take you to a land like your own, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death! "Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says, 'The LORD will deliver us.' Has the god of any nation ever delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? Who of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?" 히스기야의 말을 듣지 말아라.' 앗시리아의 임금님께서 이렇게 말씀하신다. '나와 평화조약을 맺고, 나에게로 나아오너라. 그리하면 너희는 각각 자기의 포도나무와 자기의 무화과나무에서 난 열매를 따 먹게 될 것이며, 각기 자기가 판 샘에서 물을 마시게 될 것이다. 내가 다시 와서 너희의 땅과 같은 땅, 곧 곡식과 새 포도주가 나는 땅, 빵과 포도원이 있는 땅, 올리브 기름과 꿀이 흐르는 땅으로 너희를 데려가서, 거기에서 살게 하고, 죽이지 않겠다. 그러므로 히스기야의 말을 듣지 말아라. 너희의 주가 너희를 구원할 것이라고 너희를 설득하여도, 히스기야의 말을 듣지 말아라. 뭇 민족의 신들 가운데서 어느 신이 앗시리아 왕의 손에서 자기 땅을 구원한 일이 있느냐? 하맛과 아르밧의 신들은 어디에 있으며, 스발와임과 헤나와 아와의 신들은 또 어디에 있느냐? 그들이 사마리아를 내 손에서 건져 내었느냐? 여러 민족의 신들 가운데서, 그 어느 신이 내 손에서 자기 땅을 구원한 일이 있기에, 주 너희의 하나님이 내 손에서 예루살렘을 구원해 낸다는 말이냐?'"

But the people remained silent and said nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, "Do not answer him." Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace administrator, Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to Hezekiah, with their clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had said. 백성은 한 마디도 대답하지 않고 조용히 있었다. 그에게 아무런 대답도 하지 말라는 왕의 명령이 있었기 때문이다. 힐기야의 아들 엘리야김 궁내대신과 셉나 서기관과 아삽의 아들 요아 역사기록관이, 울분을 참지 못하여 옷을 찢으며 히스기야에게 돌아와서, 랍사게의 말을 그대로 전하였다.
