사무엘상 4장

 

And Samuel's word came to all Israel. Now the Israelites went out to fight against the Philistines. The Israelites camped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines at Aphek. The Philistines deployed their forces to meet Israel, and as the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand of them on the battlefield. When the soldiers returned to camp, the elders of Israel asked, "Why did the LORD bring defeat upon us today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the LORD's covenant from Shiloh, so that it may go with us and save us from the hand of our enemies." So the people sent men to Shiloh, and they brought back the ark of the covenant of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim. And Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God. When the ark of the LORD's covenant came into the camp, all Israel raised such a great shout that the ground shook. 사무엘이 말을 하면, 온 이스라엘이 귀를 기울여 들었다. 그 무렵에 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘을 치려고 모여들었다. 이스라엘 사람은 블레셋 사람과 싸우려고 나가서 에벤에셀에 진을 쳤고, 블레셋 사람은 아벡에 진을 쳤다. 블레셋 사람이 전열을 갖추고 이스라엘 사람을 치자, 치열한 싸움이 벌어졌다. 이스라엘은 이 싸움에서 블레셋에게 졌고, 그 벌판에서 죽은 이스라엘 사람은 사천 명쯤 되었다. 이스라엘의 패잔병들이 진으로 돌아왔을 때에, 장로들이 말하였다. "주님께서 오늘 우리가 블레셋 사람에게 지도록 하신 까닭이 무엇이겠느냐? 실로에 가서 주님의 언약궤를 우리에게로 모셔다가 우리 한가운데에 있게 하여, 우리를 원수의 손에서 구하여 주시도록 하자!" 그래서 이스라엘 백성이 실로로 사람들을 보냈다. 그들이 거기 그룹들 사이에 앉아 계시는 만군의 주님의 언약궤를 메고 왔다. 하나님의 언약궤를 가져올 때에 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 함께 왔다. 주님의 언약궤가 진으로 들어올 때에 모든 이스라엘 백성이 땅이 진동할 정도로 크게 환호성을 올렸다.

Hearing the uproar, the Philistines asked, "What's all this shouting in the Hebrew camp?" When they learned that the ark of the LORD had come into the camp, the Philistines were afraid. "A god has come into the camp," they said. "We're in trouble! Nothing like this has happened before. Woe to us! Who will deliver us from the hand of these mighty gods? They are the gods who struck the Egyptians with all kinds of plagues in the desert. Be strong, Philistines! Be men, or you will be subject to the Hebrews, as they have been to you. Be men, and fight!" So the Philistines fought, and the Israelites were defeated and every man fled to his tent. The slaughter was very great; Israel lost thirty thousand foot soldiers. 블레셋 사람이 그 환호하는 소리를 듣고 "저 히브리 사람의 진에서 저렇게 환호하는 소리가 들리는 까닭이 무엇이냐?" 하고 묻다가, 주님의 궤가 진에 들어갔기 때문이라는 것을 알았다. 블레셋 사람이 두려워하면서 말하였다. "이스라엘 진에 그들의 신이 들어갔다." 그래서 그들은 외쳤다. "이제 우리에게 화가 미쳤다. 일찍이 이런 일이 없었다. 우리에게 화가 미쳤는데, 누가 저 강력한 신의 손에서 우리를 건질 수가 있겠느냐? 그 신들은 광야에서 온갖 재앙으로 이집트 사람을 쳐서 죽게 한 신들이다. 블레셋 사람들아, 대장부답게 힘을 내어라! 그렇지 않으면, 히브리 사람이 우리의 종이 되었던 것처럼, 우리가 그들의 종이 될 것이다. 너희는 대장부답게 나가서 싸워라!" 그런 다음에 블레셋 사람이 전투에 임하니, 이스라엘이 져서 제각기 자기 장막으로 달아났다. 이스라엘은 이 때에 아주 크게 져서, 보병 삼만 명이 죽었다.

The ark of God was captured, and Eli's two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, died. That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line and went to Shiloh, his clothes torn and dust on his head. When he arrived, there was Eli sitting on his chair by the side of the road, watching, because his heart feared for the ark of God. When the man entered the town and told what had happened, the whole town sent up a cry. Eli heard the outcry and asked, "What is the meaning of this uproar?" The man hurried over to Eli, who was ninety-eight years old and whose eyes were set so that he could not see. 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고, 엘리의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 이 때 전사하였다. 어떤 베냐민 사람이 싸움터에서 빠져 나와, 그 날로 실로에 이르렀는데, 슬픈 나머지 옷을 찢고, 머리에는 티끌을 뒤집어쓰고 있었다. 그 사람이 왔을 때에, 엘리는 길가 의자에 앉아서 길을 내다보면서, 마음 속으로 하나님의 궤를 걱정하고 있었다. 그 사람이 성읍에 이르러서 소식을 전하니, 온 성읍이 두려워하며 슬피 울부짖었다. 엘리가 그 울부짖는 소리를 듣고 물었다. "저 소리가 무슨 소리냐?" 그 사람이 급히 달려와서 엘리에게 소식을 전하였다. 그 무렵, 엘리는 아흔여덟 살된 노인으로서, 눈이 어두워져서 앞을 거의 볼 수 없었다.

He told Eli, "I have just come from the battle line; I fled from it this very day." Eli asked, "What happened, my son?" The man who brought the news replied, "Israel fled before the Philistines, and the army has suffered heavy losses. Also your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured." When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell backward off his chair by the side of the gate. His neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man and heavy. He had led Israel forty years. His daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas, was pregnant and near the time of delivery. When she heard the news that the ark of God had been captured and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she went into labor and gave birth, but was overcome by her labor pains. As she was dying, the women attending her said, "Don't despair; you have given birth to a son." But she did not respond or pay any attention. 그 사람이 엘리에게 말하였다. "저는 전쟁터에서 도망쳐 나온 사람입니다. 전쟁터에서 오늘 도망쳐 오는 길입니다." 엘리가 물었다. "젊은이, 무슨 일이 일어났소?" 소식을 전하는 그 사람이 대답하였다. "이스라엘 백성은 블레셋 사람 앞에서 도망쳤고, 백성 가운데는 죽은 사람이 매우 많습니다. 제사장님의 두 아들 홉니와 비느하스도 전사하였고, 하나님의 궤는 빼앗겼습니다." 그가 하나님의 궤에 대한 소식을 전할 때에, 엘리는 앉아 있던 의자에서 뒤로 넘어져, 문 곁으로 쓰러져서 목이 부러져 죽었다. 늙은데다가 몸까지 무거웠기 때문이다. 그는 마흔 해 동안 이스라엘의 사사로 있었다. 그 때에 엘리의 며느리인 비느하스의 아내는 임신 중이었으며, 출산할 때가 가까웠는데, 하나님의 궤를 빼앗겼고 자기의 시아버지와 남편도 죽었다는 소식을 듣자, 갑자기 진통이 일어나, 구부리고 앉은 채 몸을 풀었다. 그러다가 그는 거의 죽게 되었다. 그 때에 곁에 서 있던 여인들이 "아들을 낳았으니 걱정하지 말아요!" 하고 말해 주었다. 그러나 산모는 대답도 없고, 관심도 보이지 않다가,

She named the boy Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel"-because of the capture of the ark of God and the deaths of her father-in-law and her husband. She said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured." 그 아이의 이름을 이가봇이라고 지어 주며, "이스라엘에서 영광이 떠났다" 하는 말만을 남겼다. 하나님의 궤를 빼앗긴 데다가, 시아버지도 죽고 남편도 죽었기 때문이었다. 거기에다가 하나님의 궤까지 빼앗겼기 때문에, 이스라엘에서 영광이 떠났다고 말했던 것이다.
