사사기 20장

 

Then all the Israelites from Dan to Beersheba and from the land of Gilead came out as one man and assembled before the LORD in Mizpah. The leaders of all the people of the tribes of Israel took their places in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand soldiers armed with swords. (The Benjamites heard that the Israelites had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the Israelites said, "Tell us how this awful thing happened." So the Levite, the husband of the murdered woman, said, "I and my concubine came to Gibeah in Benjamin to spend the night. During the night the men of Gibeah came after me and surrounded the house, intending to kill me. They raped my concubine, and she died. 그리하여 북쪽의 단에서부터 남쪽의 브엘세바에 이르기까지, 또 동쪽의 길르앗 땅에서도, 모든 이스라엘 자손이 쏟아져 나와서, 온 회중이 한꺼번에 미스바에서 주님 앞에 모였다. 이 때에 온 백성 곧 이스라엘 온 지파의 지도자들도 하나님의 백성의 총회에 참석하였다. 칼을 찬 보병도 사십만 명이나 모였다. 베냐민 자손은 모든 이스라엘 자손이 미스바로 올라왔다는 소식을 들었다. 그 때에 이스라엘 자손이 그 레위 사람에게 물었다. "이런 수치스러운 일이 어떻게 일어났는지 말하여 보시오." 그러자 죽은 여자의 남편인 그 레위 사람이 대답하였다. "나는 첩을 데리고 베냐민 사람의 땅에 있는 기브아로 간 적이 있습니다. 하룻밤을 묵을 셈이었습니다. 그 날 밤에 기브아 사람들이 몰려와서, 나를 해치려고, 내가 묵고 있던 집을 둘러쌌습니다. 그들은 나를 죽이려 하였으나, 나 대신에 내 첩을 폭행하여, 그가 죽었습니다.

I took my concubine, cut her into pieces and sent one piece to each region of Israel's inheritance, because they committed this lewd and disgraceful act in Israel. Now, all you Israelites, speak up and give your verdict." All the people rose as one man, saying, "None of us will go home. No, not one of us will return to his house. But now this is what we'll do to Gibeah: We'll go up against it as the lot directs. We'll take ten men out of every hundred from all the tribes of Israel, and a hundred from a thousand, and a thousand from ten thousand, to get provisions for the army. Then, when the army arrives at Gibeah in Benjamin, it can give them what they deserve for all this vileness done in Israel." 내가 나의 첩의 주검을 토막 내어 이스라엘이 유산으로 받은 모든 지역으로 보낸 것은, 그들이 이스라엘에서 이처럼 음란하고 수치스러운 일을 하였기 때문입니다. 여러분은 모두 이스라엘 자손이 아니십니까? 이제 여러분의 생각과 대책을 내놓으십시오!" 그러자 모든 사람이 한꺼번에 일어나서 외쳤다. "우리 가운데서 한 사람도 자기 장막으로 가서는 안 된다. 아무도 집으로 돌아가서는 안 된다. 이제 기브아 사람들에게 우리가 할 일은 이렇다. 제비를 뽑아 그들을 치자. 이스라엘의 모든 지파에서 백 명마다 열 명을, 천 명마다 백 명을, 만 명마다 천 명을 뽑아서, 그들에게 군인들이 먹을 양식을 마련하게 하고, 군인들은 베냐민 땅에 있는 기브아로 가서, 기브아 사람이 이스라엘 안에서 저지른 이 모든 수치스러운 일을 벌하게 하자."

So all the men of Israel got together and united as one man against the city. The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What about this awful crime that was committed among you? Now surrender those wicked men of Gibeah so that we may put them to death and purge the evil from Israel." But the Benjamites would not listen to their fellow Israelites. From their towns they came together at Gibeah to fight against the Israelites. At once the Benjamites mobilized twenty-six thousand swordsmen from their towns, in addition to seven hundred chosen men from those living in Gibeah. 그리하여 모든 이스라엘 사람이 하나같이 뭉쳐서, 그 성읍을 치려고 모였다. 이스라엘의 지파들이 베냐민 온 지파에게 사람을 보내어, 이렇게 말을 전하였다. "당신들 가운데서 이런 악한 일이 일어나다니, 어찌 된 일이오? 그러니 당신들은 이제 기브아에 있는 그 불량배들을 우리 손에 넘겨서, 우리가 그들을 죽여 이스라엘에서 이런 악한 일을 없애게 하시오." 그러나 베냐민 자손은 그들의 친족인 이스라엘 자손의 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 오히려 베냐민 자손은 이스라엘 자손과 싸우러 나가려고, 모든 성읍에서 기브아로 모여들었다. 그 날에 모여든 베냐민 자손은, 기브아의 주민들 가운데서 뽑은 칠백 명 외에도, 각 성읍에서 나온, 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람 이만 육천 명이 합세하였다.

Among all these soldiers there were seven hundred chosen men who were left-handed, each of whom could sling a stone at a hair and not miss. Israel, apart from Benjamin, mustered four hundred thousand swordsmen, all of them fighting men. The Israelites went up to Bethel and inquired of God. They said, "Who of us shall go first to fight against the Benjamites?" The LORD replied, "Judah shall go first." The next morning the Israelites got up and pitched camp near Gibeah. The men of Israel went out to fight the Benjamites and took up battle positions against them at Gibeah. 이 모든 사람 가운데서 뽑힌 칠백 명 왼손잡이들은, 무릿매로 돌을 던져 머리카락도 빗나가지 않고 맞히는 사람들이었다. 이스라엘 사람들에게는, 베냐민 자손을 제외하고도, 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람이 사십만 명이나 있었는데, 그들은 모두 잘 싸우는 용사였다. 이스라엘 자손이 일어나 베델로 올라가서, 하나님께 여쭈었다. "우리 가운데 어느 지파가 먼저 올라가서 베냐민 자손과 싸워야 합니까?" 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "유다 지파가 먼저 올라가거라." 다음날 아침에 이스라엘 자손이 출동하여, 기브아 맞은편에 진을 쳤다. 이스라엘 사람은 베냐민 자손과 싸우려고 나가서, 기브아를 마주 보고 전투태세를 갖추었다.

The Benjamites came out of Gibeah and cut down twenty-two thousand Israelites on the battlefield that day. But the men of Israel encouraged one another and again took up their positions where they had stationed themselves the first day. The Israelites went up and wept before the LORD until evening, and they inquired of the LORD. They said, "Shall we go up again to battle against the Benjamites, our brothers?" The LORD answered, "Go up against them." Then the Israelites drew near to Benjamin the second day. This time, when the Benjamites came out from Gibeah to oppose them, they cut down another eighteen thousand Israelites, all of them armed with swords. 그러자 베냐민 자손이 기브아에서 나와, 그 날에 이스라엘 사람 이만 이천 명을 땅에 쓰러뜨렸다. 그래서 이스라엘 자손은 베델로 올라가서, 주님 앞에서 날이 저물도록 목놓아 울면서 여쭈었다. "우리가 다시 가서, 우리의 동기 베냐민 자손과 싸워도 되겠습니까?" 그 때에 주님께서 "올라가서 싸워라!" 하고 말씀하셨다. 이스라엘 사람들은 스스로 용기를 내어, 첫날 대열을 갖추었던 그 곳으로 가서, 다시 전투태세를 갖추었다. 그 이튿날에 이스라엘 자손이 베냐민 자손을 치려고 가까이 나아갔다. 베냐민 자손은 이튿날에도 그들을 대항하려고 기브아에서 나와서, 이스라엘 자손 만 팔천 명을 땅에 쓰러뜨렸는데, 죽은 이들은 모두 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람들이었다.

Then the Israelites, all the people, went up to Bethel, and there they sat weeping before the LORD. They fasted that day until evening and presented burnt offerings and fellowship offerings to the LORD. And the Israelites inquired of the LORD. (In those days the ark of the covenant of God was there, with Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, ministering before it.) They asked, "Shall we go up again to battle with Benjamin our brother, or not?" The LORD responded, "Go, for tomorrow I will give them into your hands." Then Israel set an ambush around Gibeah. They went up against the Benjamites on the third day and took up positions against Gibeah as they had done before. 그러자 온 이스라엘 자손은 베델로 올라가서, 주님 앞에서 목놓아 울었다. 그들은 거기에 앉아서 날이 저물도록 금식하고, 주님께 화목제와 번제를 드리고, 주님께 여쭈었다. （그 때는 하나님의 언약궤가 베델에 있었고, 아론의 손자이며 엘르아살의 아들인 비느하스가 제사장으로 있는 때였다.） "우리가 또다시 올라가서 우리의 동기 베냐민 자손과 싸워도 되겠습니까, 아니면 그만두어야 하겠습니까?" 주님께서 말씀하셨다. "올라가거라. 내일은 틀림없이 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주겠다." 이스라엘이 기브아 둘레에 군인들을 매복시켰다. 사흘째 되는 날 이스라엘 자손은 베냐민 자손을 치러 올라가서, 전과 마찬가지로 기브아 쪽으로 전투태세를 갖추었다.

The Benjamites came out to meet them and were drawn away from the city. They began to inflict casualties on the Israelites as before, so that about thirty men fell in the open field and on the roads--the one leading to Bethel and the other to Gibeah. While the Benjamites were saying, "We are defeating them as before," the Israelites were saying, "Let's retreat and draw them away from the city to the roads." All the men of Israel moved from their places and took up positions at Baal Tamar, and the Israelite ambush charged out of its place on the west of Gibeah. Then ten thousand of Israel's finest men made a frontal attack on Gibeah. The fighting was so heavy that the Benjamites did not realize how near disaster was. The LORD defeated Benjamin before Israel, and on that day the Israelites struck down 25,100 Benjamites, all armed with swords. 베냐민 자손도 그들을 대항하려고 나왔으나, 꾐에 빠져 성읍에서 멀리 떠나게 되었다. 베냐민 자손은, 한 쪽은 베델로 올라가는 길과 만나고 다른 한 쪽은 기브아로 가는 길과 만나는 큰 길과 들에서, 전과 같이 이스라엘 자손을 치기 시작하여, 그들을 서른 명 가량 죽였다. 그러자 베냐민 자손은 이스라엘 자손이 처음과 같이 자기들에게 지고 있다고 생각하였다. 그러나 이스라엘 자손은 "우리가 도망치는 척하여 그들을 성읍에서 큰 길까지 꾀어 내자" 하고 말하였다. 그 때에 모든 이스라엘 주력부대는 자기들이 있던 자리에서 일어나 바알다말에서 대열을 갖추었으며, 이스라엘의 매복부대는 기브아 주변에 숨어 있다가 거기에서 쏟아져 나왔다. 온 이스라엘에서 뽑힌 만 명이 기브아 정면에 이르자 전투는 치열해졌다. 그러나 베냐민 자손은 자기들에게 재앙이 미친 것을 알지 못하였다. 주님께서 이스라엘 앞에서 베냐민을 치셨으므로, 그 날 이스라엘 자손이 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 베냐민 사람 이만 오천백 명을 모두 쳐죽였다.

Then the Benjamites saw that they were beaten. Now the men of Israel had given way before Benjamin, because they relied on the ambush they had set near Gibeah. The men who had been in ambush made a sudden dash into Gibeah, spread out and put the whole city to the sword. The men of Israel had arranged with the ambush that they should send up a great cloud of smoke from the city, and then the men of Israel would turn in the battle. The Benjamites had begun to inflict casualties on the men of Israel (about thirty), and they said, "We are defeating them as in the first battle." But when the column of smoke began to rise from the city, the Benjamites turned and saw the smoke of the whole city going up into the sky. 그제서야 베냐민 자손은 자기들이 패한 것을 알았다. 이스라엘의 주력부대가 자기들이 있던 자리를 베냐민에게 내주고 물러선 것은, 기브아 둘레에 매복시켜 둔 병력을 믿었기 때문이다. 매복한 군인들이 급히 나와 기브아로 돌격하여 사방으로 흩어져서, 칼날로 기브아의 성읍 주민을 다 쳐죽였다. 이스라엘 주력부대와 매복부대 사이에서는, 성읍에서 큰 연기가 구름기둥처럼 치솟는 것으로 신호를 삼자는 약속이 이미 되어 있었다. 이스라엘 사람들이 싸우다가 물러서자, 베냐민 사람들은 이스라엘 사람들 서른 명 가량을 쳐죽이면서, 이스라엘 사람들이 지난번 싸움에서처럼 자기들에게 꼼짝없이 진다고 생각하였다. 그러나 성읍에서 연기가 구름기둥처럼 치솟아오를 때에 베냐민 사람들이 뒤돌아보니, 온 성읍이 불바다가 되어 불길이 하늘로 치솟는 것이 아닌가!

Then the men of Israel turned on them, and the men of Benjamin were terrified, because they realized that disaster had come upon them. So they fled before the Israelites in the direction of the desert, but they could not escape the battle. And the men of Israel who came out of the towns cut them down there. They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them and easily overran them in the vicinity of Gibeah on the east. Eighteen thousand Benjamites fell, all of them valiant fighters. As they turned and fled toward the desert to the rock of Rimmon, the Israelites cut down five thousand men along the roads. They kept pressing after the Benjamites as far as Gidom and struck down two thousand more. 이스라엘 사람들이 반격하니, 베냐민 사람들은 패색이 짙은 것을 깨닫고, 몹시 겁에 질렸다. 그들은 이스라엘 사람들 앞에서 물러나 광야길로 방향을 돌렸으나, 퇴로가 막혔다. 그들은 이스라엘 주력부대와 성읍을 치고 나온 부대 사이에 끼여 협살당하고 말았다. 이스라엘 사람들은 베냐민 사람들을 포위하고, 쉬지 않고 동쪽으로 기브아 맞은쪽에 이르기까지 추격하며 쳐부수었다. 그 때에 베냐민 사람들이 만 팔천 명이나 쓰러졌는데, 그들은 모두 용사였다. 베냐민의 나머지 패잔병은 방향을 바꾸어 광야 쪽 림몬 바위 있는 데까지 도망쳤으나, 이스라엘 사람들이 큰 길에서 오천 명을 이삭 줍듯이 모조리 죽이고, 기돔에까지 쫓아가서 덮쳐 또 이천 명을 죽였다.

On that day twenty-five thousand Benjamite swordsmen fell, all of them valiant fighters. But six hundred men turned and fled into the desert to the rock of Rimmon, where they stayed four months. The men of Israel went back to Benjamin and put all the towns to the sword, including the animals and everything else they found. All the towns they came across they set on fire. 베냐민 사람들 가운데서 칼을 쓸 줄 아는 사람 이만 오천 명이 그 날 모두 쓰러졌는데, 그들은 모두 용사들이었다. 그러나 육백 명은 방향을 돌려 광야 쪽 림몬 바위까지 도망쳐서, 넉 달을 그 림몬 바위 있는 곳에서 숨어 살았다. 이스라엘 사람들은 다시 베냐민 자손에게로 돌아와서, 그 성읍에서 사람이나 가축 할 것 없이 닥치는 대로 모두 칼로 쳐서 죽였다. 그들은 그 일대의 성읍도 모두 불살랐다.
