사사기 18장

 

In those days Israel had no king. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking a place of their own where they might settle, because they had not yet come into an inheritance among the tribes of Israel. So the Danites sent five warriors from Zorah and Eshtaol to spy out the land and explore it. These men represented all their clans. They told them, "Go, explore the land." The men entered the hill country of Ephraim and came to the house of Micah, where they spent the night. When they were near Micah's house, they recognized the voice of the young Levite; so they turned in there and asked him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? Why are you here?" He told them what Micah had done for him, and said, "He has hired me and I am his priest." Then they said to him, "Please inquire of God to learn whether our journey will be successful." 그 때에 이스라엘에 왕이 없었고, 단 지파는 이스라엘의 지파들 가운데서 아직 그들이 유산으로 받을 땅을 얻지 못하였으므로, 그들이 자리잡고 살 땅을 찾고 있었다. 그래서 단 지파 자손은 소라와 에스다올에 살고 있는 지파의 온 가문에서 용감한 사람 다섯 명을 뽑아서 땅 정찰 임무를 맡기고, 땅을 탐지하고 살피도록 보냈다. 그들은 에브라임 산간지방으로 들어섰다가, 미가의 집에 이르러 거기서 하룻밤을 묵었다. 미가의 집에 머무는 동안 그들은 그 젊은 레위 사람의 억양과 말씨를 알아 듣고, 그에게 다가가서 물었다. "누가 당신을 이리로 데려왔습니까? 당신은 여기에서 무슨 일을 하십니까? 무엇 때문에 여기에 있습니까?" 그러자 그는 그들에게 대답하였다. "미가가 나에게 조건을 제시하고 나를 고용하여 자기의 제사장으로 삼았습니다." 그들이 그에게 말하였다. "하나님께 물어 보아서, 우리가 가고 있는 이 길이 성공할 것인지, 우리에게 알려 주십시오."

The priest answered them, "Go in peace. Your journey has the LORD's approval." So the five men left and came to Laish, where they saw that the people were living in safety, like the Sidonians, unsuspecting and secure. And since their land lacked nothing, they were prosperous. Also, they lived a long way from the Sidonians and had no relationship with anyone else. When they returned to Zorah and Eshtaol, their brothers asked them, "How did you find things?" They answered, "Come on, let's attack them! We have seen that the land is very good. Aren't you going to do something? Don't hesitate to go there and take it over. When you get there, you will find an unsuspecting people and a spacious land that God has put into your hands, a land that lacks nothing whatever." 그 제사장이 그들에게 "평안히 가십시오. 주님께서 여러분이 가는 그 길을 인도하실 것입니다" 하고 일러주었다. 그래서 그 다섯 사람은 길을 떠나 라이스로 갔다. 그들은 그 곳 사람들이, 한가하고 평화롭게 사는 시돈 사람들처럼, 안전하게 살고 있는 것을 보았다. 그리고 그 땅에는 어느 누구도 권력을 쥐고 그들을 해치는 자가 없었다. 그들은 시돈 사람들과도 멀리 떨어져 있어서, 어느 누구와도 접촉이 없었다. 다섯 사람이 소라와 에스다올로 돌아와 그들의 백성에게 이르렀다. 그들이 그 다섯 사람에게 정찰한 내용을 물으니, 그들이 이렇게 대답하였다. "어서 가서, 그들을 치도록 합시다. 우리가 본 그 땅은 정말 좋은 땅입니다. 우리가 이렇게 가만히 있을 때가 아닙니다. 망설이지 말고 빨리 쳐들어가서, 그 땅을 차지합시다. 우리가 거기에 가기만 하면, 넓은 땅에서 평안하게 살고 있는 백성들을 보게 될 것입니다. 하나님이 그 땅을 우리의 손에 넘겨 주셨습니다. 무엇 하나 부러울 것이 없고, 부족한 것이 없는 곳입니다."

Then six hundred men from the clan of the Danites, armed for battle, set out from Zorah and Eshtaol. On their way they set up camp near Kiriath Jearim in Judah. This is why the place west of Kiriath Jearim is called Mahaneh Dan to this day. From there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim and came to Micah's house. Then the five men who had spied out the land of Laish said to their brothers, "Do you know that one of these houses has an ephod, other household gods, a carved image and a cast idol? Now you know what to do." So they turned in there and went to the house of the young Levite at Micah's place and greeted him. 단 지파 가족들 가운데서, 육백 명이 무기를 들고, 소라와 에스다올에서 길을 떠났다. 그들은 유다 땅에 있는 기럇여아림에까지 가서 진을 쳤다. 그래서 그 곳 이름이 오늘날까지도 마하네단이라 불리고 있는데, 그 곳은 바로 기럇여아림 서쪽에 있다. 그들은 그 곳에서 에브라임 산간지방으로 올라가서 미가의 집에 이르렀다. 전에 라이스 땅을 탐지하러 갔던 그 다섯 사람이 같이 간 사람들에게 말하였다. The six hundred Danites, armed for battle, stood at the entrance to the gate. The five men who had spied out the land went inside and took the carved image, the ephod, the other household gods and the cast idol while the priest and the six hundred armed men stood at the entrance to the gate. When these men went into Micah's house and took the carved image, the ephod, the other household gods and the cast idol, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?" They answered him, "Be quiet! Don't say a word. Come with us, and be our father and priest. Isn't it better that you serve a tribe and clan in Israel as priest rather than just one man's household?" Then the priest was glad. He took the ephod, the other household gods and the carved image and went along with the people. 단 자손 육백 명이 무기를 들고 문 어귀를 지키고 있었다. 그 땅을 탐지하러 갔던 다섯 사람이 그리로 들어가서 은을 입힌 목상과 에봇과 드라빔과 부어 만든 우상을 챙기는 동안, 제사장은 무기를 지닌 육백 명과 함께 문 어귀에 서 있었다. 미가의 집에 들어간 다섯 사람이 은을 입힌 목상과 에봇과 드라빔과 부어 만든 신상을 가지고 나올 때에, 제사장이 그들에게 어떻게 된 일이냐고 물었다. 그들이 그에게 대답하였다. "조용히 하십시오. 아무 말 말고 우리를 따라 나서십시오. 우리의 어른과 제사장이 되어 주십시오. 이 집에서 한 가정의 제사장이 되는 것보다야 이스라엘의 한 지파와 한 가문의 제사장이 되는 것이 더 낫지 않겠습니까?" 제사장은 그 제안이 마음에 들어, 에봇과 드라빔과 은을 입힌 목상을 받아들고, 그 무리들 가운데로 들어갔다.

Putting their little children, their livestock and their possessions in front of them, they turned away and left. When they had gone some distance from Micah's house, the men who lived near Micah were called together and overtook the Danites. As they shouted after them, the Danites turned and said to Micah, "What's the matter with you that you called out your men to fight?" He replied, "You took the gods I made, and my priest, and went away. What else do I have? How can you ask, 'What's the matter with you?' " The Danites answered, "Don't argue with us, or some hot-tempered men will attack you, and you and your family will lose your lives." 그들은 발길을 돌려 길을 떠났다. 어린 아이들과 가축과 값나가는 소유물을 앞세웠다. 그들이 미가의 집에서 떠나 멀리 갔을 때에, 미가와 이웃집 사람들이 함께 모여서, 단 지파 자손을 뒤쫓아왔다. 그들이 부르는 소리를 듣고, 단 지파 자손이 돌아서서 미가에게 물었다. "무슨 일이 있기에 이렇게들 모여서 오시오?" 미가가 말하였다. "뭐요? 내가 만든 신상과 제사장을 빼앗아 가면서 무슨 일이 있느냐고? 그게 말이나 되는 소리요? 나에게 남은 것이 무엇이오?" 그러자 단 지파 자손이 그에게 말하였다. "더 이상 아무 말도 하지 말고 가만히 있는 게 좋을거요. 이 사람들이 성이 나서 당신들을 치고, 당신과 당신의 가족의 생명을 빼앗을까 염려되오."

So the Danites went their way, and Micah, seeing that they were too strong for him, turned around and went back home. Then they took what Micah had made, and his priest, and went on to Laish, against a peaceful and unsuspecting people. They attacked them with the sword and burned down their city. There was no one to rescue them because they lived a long way from Sidon and had no relationship with anyone else. The city was in a valley near Beth Rehob. The Danites rebuilt the city and settled there. They named it Dan after their forefather Dan, who was born to Israel--though the city used to be called Laish. There the Danites set up for themselves the idols, and Jonathan son of Gershom, the son of Moses, and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan until the time of the captivity of the land. 미가는 상대가 자기보다 더 강한 것을 알고 발길을 돌려 집으로 돌아갔고, 단 지파 자손도 가던 길을 갔다. 단 지파 자손은, 미가가 만든 신상과 함께 그에게 딸린 제사장을 데리고, 한가하고 평화롭게 사는 라이스 백성에게 가서, 그들을 칼로 쳐서 죽이고, 그들의 성을 불살라 버렸다. 그런데도 라이스를 구하여 주는 자가 아무도 없었던 것은, 그 성읍이 베드르홉 부근의 골짜기에 있어서, 시돈에서 멀리 떨어져 있고, 또 어느 누구와도 접촉이 없었기 때문이다. 단 지파 자손은 허물어진 성을 다시 쌓고, 그 곳에서 살았다. 그들은 이스라엘에게서 태어난 그들의 조상 단의 이름을 따라, 그 성을 단이라고 불렀다. 그 성의 본래 이름은 라이스이다. 단 지파 자손은 자기들이 섬길 신상을 세웠다. 그리고 모세의 손자이며 게르손의 아들인 요나단과 그의 자손이 단 지파의 제사장이 되어, 그 땅 사람들이 포로로 잡혀갈 때까지 그 일을 맡았다.

They continued to use the idols Micah had made, all the time the house of God was in Shiloh. 그들은, 하나님의 집이 실로에 있는 동안, 내내 미가가 만든 우상을 그대로 두고 섬겼다.
