사사기 19장

 

In those days Israel had no king. Now a Levite who lived in a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim took a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. But she was unfaithful to him. She left him and went back to her father's house in Bethlehem, Judah. After she had been there four months, her husband went to her to persuade her to return. He had with him his servant and two donkeys. She took him into her father's house, and when her father saw him, he gladly welcomed him. His father-in-law, the girl's father, prevailed upon him to stay; so he remained with him three days, eating and drinking, and sleeping there. On the fourth day they got up early and he prepared to leave, but the girl's father said to his son-in-law, "Refresh yourself with something to eat; then you can go." 이스라엘에 왕이 없던 때에, 한 레위 남자가 에브라임의 산골에 들어가서 살고 있었다. 그는 유다 땅의 베들레헴에서 한 여자를 첩으로 데려왔다. 그러나 무슨 일로 화가 난 그 여자는, 그를 떠나 유다 땅의 베들레헴에 있는 자기 친정 집으로 돌아가서, 넉 달 동안이나 머물러 있었다. 그래서 그 남편은 그 여자의 마음을 달래서 데려오려고, 자기의 종과 함께 나귀 두 마리를 끌어내어 길을 떠났다. 그 여자가 그를 자기 아버지의 집으로 데리고 들어가자, 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그를 보고 기쁘게 맞이하였다. 그의 장인 곧 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그를 붙들므로, 그는 사흘 동안 함께 지내며 먹고 마시면서, 거기에 머물러 있었다. 나흘째 되는 날, 그가 아침 일찍 깨어 떠나려고 일어서니, 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 사위에게 말하였다. "빵을 좀 더 먹고서 속이 든든해지거든 떠나게."

So the two of them sat down to eat and drink together. Afterward the girl's father said, "Please stay tonight and enjoy yourself." And when the man got up to go, his father-in-law persuaded him, so he stayed there that night. On the morning of the fifth day, when he rose to go, the girl's father said, "Refresh yourself. Wait till afternoon!" So the two of them ate together. Then when the man, with his concubine and his servant, got up to leave, his father-in-law, the girl's father, said, "Now look, it's almost evening. Spend the night here; the day is nearly over. Stay and enjoy yourself. Early tomorrow morning you can get up and be on your way home." But, unwilling to stay another night, the man left and went toward Jebus (that is, Jerusalem), with his two saddled donkeys and his concubine. 그래서 그들 두 사람은 또 앉아서 함께 먹고 마셨다. 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 사위에게 말하였다. "부디 오늘 하룻밤 더 여기서 묵으면서 기분좋게 쉬게." 그 사람은 일어나 가려고 하였으나, 그의 장인이 권하여 다시 거기에서 하룻밤을 묵었다. 닷새째 되는 날 아침에 그가 일찍 일어나 떠나려고 하니, 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 권하였다. "우선 속이 든든해지도록 무얼 좀 먹고 쉬었다가, 한낮을 피하여 천천히 떠나게." 그들 둘은 또 음식을 먹었다. 그 사람이 일어나 자기의 첩과 종을 데리고 떠나려고 하니, 그의 장인인 그 젊은 여자의 아버지가 그에게 권하였다. "자, 오늘은 이미 날이 저물어 가니, 하룻밤만 더 묵어 가게. 이제 날이 저물었으니, 여기서 머물면서 기분좋게 쉬고, 내일 아침 일찍 일어나서 길을 떠나, 자네의 집으로 가게." 그러나 그 사람은 하룻밤을 더 묵을 생각이 없어서, 일어나서 나귀 두 마리에 안장을 지우고, 첩과 함께 길을 떠나, 여부스의 맞은쪽에 이르렀다. （여부스는 곧 예루살렘이다.）

When they were near Jebus and the day was almost gone, the servant said to his master, "Come, let's stop at this city of the Jebusites and spend the night." His master replied, "No. We won't go into an alien city, whose people are not Israelites. We will go on to Gibeah." He added, "Come, let's try to reach Gibeah or Ramah and spend the night in one of those places." So they went on, and the sun set as they neared Gibeah in Benjamin. There they stopped to spend the night. They went and sat in the city square, but no one took them into his home for the night. 그들이 여부스 가까이에 이르렀을 때에, 벌써 하루 해가 저물고 있었다. 그의 종이 주인에게 말하였다. "기브아나 라마, 두 곳 가운데 어느 한 곳에 가서 묵도록 하자." 그래서 그들이 그 곳을 지나 계속 나아갈 때에, 베냐민 지파의 땅인 기브아 가까이에서 해가 지고 말았다. 그들은 기브아에 들어가서 묵으려고 그리로 발길을 돌렸다. 그들이 들어가 성읍 광장에 앉았으나, 아무도 그들을 집으로 맞아들여 묵게 하는 사람이 없었다.

That evening an old man from the hill country of Ephraim, who was living in Gibeah (the men of the place were Benjamites), came in from his work in the fields. When he looked and saw the traveler in the city square, the old man asked, "Where are you going? Where did you come from?" He answered, "We are on our way from Bethlehem in Judah to a remote area in the hill country of Ephraim where I live. I have been to Bethlehem in Judah and now I am going to the house of the LORD. No one has taken me into his house. We have both straw and fodder for our donkeys and bread and wine for ourselves your servants--me, your maidservant, and the young man with us. We don't need anything." "You are welcome at my house," the old man said. "Let me supply whatever you need. only don't spend the night in the square." 마침 그 때에 해가 저물어 밭에서 일을 마치고 돌아오는 한 노인이 있었다. 그는 본래 에브라임 산간지방 사람인데, 그 때에 그는 기브아에서 살고 있었다. （기브아의 주민은 베냐민 자손이다.） 그 노인이 성읍 광장에 나그네들이 있는 것을 알아보고, 그들에게, 어디로 가는 길인지, 어디서 왔는지를 물었다. 레위 사람이 그에게 대답하였다. "우리는 유다 땅의 베들레헴에서 길을 떠나, 내가 사는 에브라임 산골로 가는 길입니다. 나는 유다 땅의 베들레헴에 갔다가 집으로 돌아가는 길인데, 이 곳에서는 아무도 나를 맞아들이는 사람이 없습니다. 우리에게는 나귀에게 먹일 먹이도 있고, 또 나와 나의 처와 종이 함께 먹을 빵과 포도주도 있습니다. 부족한 것이라고는 아무것도 없습니다." 노인이 말하였다. "잘 오셨소. 우리 집으로 갑시다. 내가 잘 돌보아 드리리다. 광장에서 밤을 새워서는 안 되지요."

So he took him into his house and fed his donkeys. After they had washed their feet, they had something to eat and drink. While they were enjoying themselves, some of the wicked men of the city surrounded the house. Pounding on the door, they shouted to the old man who owned the house, "Bring out the man who came to your house so we can have sex with him." The owner of the house went outside and said to them, "No, my friends, don't be so vile. Since this man is my guest, don't do this disgraceful thing. Look, here is my virgin daughter, and his concubine. I will bring them out to you now, and you can use them and do to them whatever you wish. But to this man, don't do such a disgraceful thing." But the men would not listen to him. So the man took his concubine and sent her outside to them, and they raped her and abused her throughout the night, and at dawn they let her go. 노인은 그들을 자기 집으로 데리고 들어가서 나귀에게 먹이를 주었다. 그들은 발을 씻고 나서, 먹고 마셨다. 그들이 한참 즐겁게 쉬고 있을 때에, 그 성읍의 불량한 사내들이 몰려와서, 그 집을 둘러싸고, 문을 두드리며, 집 주인인 노인에게 소리질렀다. "노인의 집에 들어온 그 남자를 끌어내시오. 우리가 그 사람하고 관계를 좀 해야겠소." 그러자 주인 노인이 밖으로 나가서 그들에게 말하였다. "여보시오, 젊은이들, 제발 이러지 마시오. 이 사람은 우리 집에 온 손님이니, 그에게 악한 일을 하지 마시오. 제발 이런 수치스러운 일을 하지 마시오. 여기 처녀인 내 딸과 그 사람의 첩을 내가 끌어내다 줄 터이니, 그들을 데리고 가서 당신들 좋을 대로 하시오. 그러나 이 남자에게만은 그런 수치스러운 일을 하지 마시오." 그러나 그 불량배들은 노인의 말을 들으려 하지 않았다. 그래서 그 레위 사람은 자기 첩을 밖으로 내보내어 그 남자들에게 주었다. 그러자 그 남자들이 밤새도록 그 여자를 윤간하여 욕보인 뒤에, 새벽에 동이 틀 때에야 놓아 주었다.

At daybreak the woman went back to the house where her master was staying, fell down at the door and lay there until daylight. When her master got up in the morning and opened the door of the house and stepped out to continue on his way, there lay his concubine, fallen in the doorway of the house, with her hands on the threshold. He said to her, "Get up; let's go." But there was no answer. Then the man put her on his donkey and set out for home. When he reached home, he took a knife and cut up his concubine, limb by limb, into twelve parts and sent them into all the areas of Israel. Everyone who saw it said, "Such a thing has never been seen or done, not since the day the Israelites came up out of Egypt. Think about it! Consider it! Tell us what to do!" 동이 트자, 그 여자는, 자기 남편이 있는 그 노인의 집으로 돌아와, 문에 쓰러져서, 아침이 밝아올 때까지 거기에 있었다. 그 여자의 남편이 아침에 일어나서, 그 집의 문을 열고 떠나려고 나와 보니, 자기 첩인 그 여자가 두 팔로 문지방을 잡고 문간에 쓰러져 있었다. 일어나서 같이 가자고 말하였으나, 아무 대답이 없었다. 그는 그 여자의 주검을 나귀에 싣고, 길을 떠나 자기 고장으로 갔다. 집에 들어서자마자 칼을 가져다가, 첩의 주검을 열두 토막을 내고, 이스라엘 온 지역으로 그것을 보냈다. 그것을 보는 사람들마다 이구 동성으로 말하였다. "이스라엘 자손이 이집트에서 나온 날부터 오늘까지 이런 일은 일어난 적도 없고, 또 본 일도 없다. 이 일을 깊이 생각하여 보고 의논한 다음에, 의견을 말하기로 하자."
