사사기 3장

 

These are the nations the LORD left to test all those Israelites who had not experienced any of the wars in Canaan (he did this only to teach warfare to the descendants of the Israelites who had not had previous battle experience): the five rulers of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites living in the Lebanon mountains from Mount Baal Hermon to Lebo Hamath. They were left to test the Israelites to see whether they would obey the LORD's commands, which he had given their forefathers through Moses. The Israelites lived among the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites. 가나안 전쟁을 전혀 겪어 본 일이 없는 모든 이스라엘 백성을 시험하시려고, 주님께서 그 땅에 남겨 두신 민족들이 있다. 전에 전쟁을 겪어 본 일이 없는 이스라엘 자손의 세대들에게, 전쟁이 무엇인지 가르쳐 알게 하여 주려고 그들을 남겨 두신 것이다. 그들은 바로 블레셋의 다섯 통치자와 가나안 사람 모두와 시돈 사람과 히위 사람이다. 히위 사람은 바알헤르몬 산으로부터 저 멀리 하맛 어귀에까지 이르는 레바논 산에 사는 사람들이다. 주님께서 이스라엘 자손을 시험하셔서, 그들이 과연 주님께서 모세를 시켜 조상들에게 내리신 명령에 순종하는지 순종하지 않는지를 알아보시려고 이런 민족들을 남겨놓으신 것이다. 그래서 이스라엘 자손은 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 아모리 사람과 브리스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람과 함께 섞여 살았다.

They took their daughters in marriage and gave their own daughters to their sons, and served their gods. The Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD; they forgot the LORD their God and served the Baals and the Asherahs. The anger of the LORD burned against Israel so that he sold them into the hands of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram Naharaim, to whom the Israelites were subject for eight years. But when they cried out to the LORD, he raised up for them a deliverer, Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, who saved them. The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he became Israel's judge and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him. 그리고 이스라엘 자손은 그 여러 민족의 딸을 데려다가 자기들의 아내로 삼았고, 또 자기들의 딸을 그들의 아들에게 주었으며, 그들의 신들을 섬겼다. 이스라엘 자손이 주 하나님을 저버리고 바알과 아세라를 섬겨, 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 저질렀다. 주님께서 이스라엘 백성에게 크게 분노하시고, 그들을 메소포타미아 왕 구산리사다임의 손에 넘겨 주셨다. 이스라엘 자손이 구산리사다임을 여덟 해 동안 섬겼다. 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 울부짖으니, 주님께서 그들을 구하여 주시려고 이스라엘 자손 가운데서 한 구원자를 세우셨는데, 그가 곧 갈렙의 아우 그나스의 아들인 옷니엘이다. 주님의 영이 그에게 내리니, 옷니엘은 이스라엘의 사사가 되어 전쟁터에 싸우러 나갔다. 주님께서 메소포타미아 왕 구산리사다임을 옷니엘의 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로, 옷니엘은 구산리사다임을 쳐서 이길 수 있었다.

So the land had peace for forty years, until Othniel son of Kenaz died. Once again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel. Getting the Ammonites and Amalekites to join him, Eglon came and attacked Israel, and they took possession of the City of Palms. The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years. Again the Israelites cried out to the LORD, and he gave them a deliverer--Ehud, a left-handed man, the son of Gera the Benjamite. The Israelites sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab. 그 땅은 그나스의 아들 옷니엘이 죽을 때까지 사십 년 동안 전쟁이 없이 평온하였다. 이스라엘 자손이 다시 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 저질렀다. 그들이 이렇게 주님께서 보시기에 악한 일을 저질렀기 때문에, 주님께서는 모압 왕 에글론을 강적이 되게 하여서 이스라엘을 대적하게 하셨다. 에글론은 암몬 자손과 아말렉 자손을 모아 이스라엘을 공격하고, 종려나무 성읍인 여리고를 점령하였다. 그래서 이스라엘 자손이 열여덟 해 동안이나 모압 왕 에글론을 섬겼다. 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 울부짖으니, 주님께서 그들에게 한 구원자를 세우셨는데, 그가 곧 베냐민 지파 게라의 아들인 왼손잡이 에훗이다. 이스라엘 자손은 에훗을 시켜, 모압 왕 에글론에게 조공을 보냈다.

Now Ehud had made a double-edged sword about a foot and a half long, which he strapped to his right thigh under his clothing. He presented the tribute to Eglon king of Moab, who was a very fat man. After Ehud had presented the tribute, he sent on their way the men who had carried it. At the idols near Gilgal he himself turned back and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." The king said, "Quiet!" And all his attendants left him. Ehud then approached him while he was sitting alone in the upper room of his summer palace and said, "I have a message from God for you." As the king rose from his seat, 그러자 에훗은 길이가 한 자쯤 되는 양쪽에 날이 선 칼을 만들어서 오른쪽 허벅지 옷 속에 차고, 모압 왕 에글론에게 가서 조공을 바쳤다. 에글론은 살이 많이 찐 사람이었다. 에훗은 조공을 바친 뒤에, 그 조공을 메고 온 사람들을 돌려보냈다. 그러나 에훗 자신은 길갈 근처 돌 우상들이 있는 곳에서 되돌아와, 에글론에게 "임금님, 제가 은밀히 드릴 말씀이 있습니다" 하고 아뢰었다. 왕이, 모시고 섰던 부하들에게 물러가라고 명령하자, 그들은 모두 물러갔다. 에훗이 왕에게 다가섰을 때에, 마침 왕은 시원한 그의 집 다락방에 홀로 앉아 있었다. 에훗이 "임금님께 전하여 드릴 하나님의 말씀이 있습니다" 하니, 왕은 자리에서 일어섰다.

Ehud reached with his left hand, drew the sword from his right thigh and plunged it into the king's belly. Even the handle sank in after the blade, which came out his back. Ehud did not pull the sword out, and the fat closed in over it. Then Ehud went out to the porch ; he shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. After he had gone, the servants came and found the doors of the upper room locked. They said, "He must be relieving himself in the inner room of the house." They waited to the point of embarrassment, but when he did not open the doors of the room, they took a key and unlocked them. There they saw their lord fallen to the floor, dead. 그 때에 에훗은 왼손으로 오른쪽 허벅지에서 칼을 뽑아 왕의 배를 찔렀다. 칼자루까지도 칼날을 따라 들어가서 칼 끝이 등 뒤로 나왔다. 에훗이 그 칼을 빼내지 않았으므로, 기름기가 칼에 엉겨 붙었다. 에훗은 현관으로 나가, 뒤에서 다락방 문을 닫고 걸어 잠갔다. 에훗이 나간 뒤에, 그의 부하들이 와서 다락방 문이 잠겨 있는 것을 보고, 왕이 그 시원한 다락방에서 용변을 보고 있다고 생각하였다. 그러나 오랫동안 기다려도 왕이 끝내 다락방 문을 열지 않으므로, 열쇠를 가져다가 문을 열고 보니, 왕이 죽은 채로 바닥에 쓰러져 있었다.

While they waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah. When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them. "Follow me," he ordered, "for the LORD has given Moab, your enemy, into your hands." So they followed him down and, taking possession of the fords of the Jordan that led to Moab, they allowed no one to cross over. At that time they struck down about ten thousand Moabites, all vigorous and strong; not a man escaped. That day Moab was made subject to Israel, and the land had peace for eighty years. 그들이 기다리는 동안에 에훗은 몸을 피하여, 돌 우상들이 있는 곳을 지나서 스이라로 도망쳤다. 그가 그 곳에 이르러 에브라임 산간지방에서 소집 나팔을 불자, 이스라엘 자손이 그를 따라 산간지방에서 쳐내려갔다. 에훗이 그들을 앞장섰다. "나를 따라라! 주님께서 너희 원수 모압을 너희 손에 넘겨 주셨다." 그가 이렇게 외치자, 그들이 에훗을 따라 내려가 모압으로 가는 요단 강 나루를 점령하고 한 사람도 건너가지 못하게 하였다. 그 때에 그들이 쳐죽인 건장하고 용맹스러운 모압 군인의 수는 모두 만 명이나 되었는데, 한 사람도 도망치지 못하였다. 그 날 모압은 굴복하여 이스라엘의 통치를 받게 되었고, 그 뒤로 그 땅에는 팔십 년 동안 전쟁이 없이 평온하였다.

After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an oxgoad. He too saved Israel. 에훗 다음에는 아낫의 아들 삼갈이 사사가 되었다. 그는 소를 모는 막대기만으로 블레셋 사람 육백 명을 쳐죽여 이스라엘을 구하였다.
