사사기 1장

 

After the death of Joshua, the Israelites asked the LORD, "Who will be the first to go up and fight for us against the Canaanites?" The LORD answered, "Judah is to go; I have given the land into their hands." Then the men of Judah said to the Simeonites their brothers, "Come up with us into the territory allotted to us, to fight against the Canaanites. We in turn will go with you into yours." So the Simeonites went with them. When Judah attacked, the LORD gave the Canaanites and Perizzites into their hands and they struck down ten thousand men at Bezek. It was there that they found Adoni-Bezek and fought against him, putting to rout the Canaanites and Perizzites. 여호수아가 죽은 뒤에, 이스라엘 자손이 주님께 여쭈었다. "우리 가운데 어느 지파가 먼저 올라가서 가나안 사람과 싸워야 합니까?" 주님께서 대답하셨다. "우리와 함께 우리 몫으로 정해진 땅으로 올라가서, 가나안 사람을 치자. 그러면 우리도 너희 몫으로 정해진 땅으로 함께 싸우러 올라가겠다." 그리하여 시므온 지파가 유다 지파와 함께 진군하였다. 유다 지파가 싸우러 올라갔을 때에, 주님께서 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람을 그들의 손에 넘겨 주셨으므로, 그들은 베섹에서 만 명이나 무찔렀다. 그 곳 베섹에서 그들은 아도니베섹을 만나서 그와 싸워, 가나안 사람과 브리스 사람을 무찔렀다.

Adoni-Bezek fled, but they chased him and caught him, and cut off his thumbs and big toes. Then Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off have picked up scraps under my table. Now God has paid me back for what I did to them." They brought him to Jerusalem, and he died there. The men of Judah attacked Jerusalem also and took it. They put the city to the sword and set it on fire. After that, the men of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites living in the hill country, the Negev and the western foothills. From there they advanced against the people living in Debir (formerly called Kiriath Sepher). And Caleb said, "I will give my daughter Acsah in marriage to the man who attacks and captures Kiriath Sepher." Othniel son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so Caleb gave his daughter Acsah to him in marriage. One day when she came to Othniel, she urged him to ask her father for a field. When she got off her donkey, Caleb asked her, "What can I do for you?" She replied, "Do me a special favor. Since you have given me land in the Negev, give me also springs of water." The descendants of Moses' father-in-law, the Kenite, went up from the City of Palms with the men of Judah to live among the people of the Desert of Judah in the Negev near Arad. Then the men of Judah went with the Simeonites their brothers and attacked the Canaanites living in Zephath, and they totally destroyed the city. Therefore it was called Hormah. The men of Judah also took Gaza, Ashkelon and Ekron--each city with its territory. The LORD was with the men of Judah. They took possession of the hill country, but they were unable to drive the people from the plains, because they had iron chariots. The Benjamites, however, failed to dislodge the Jebusites, who were living in Jerusalem; to this day the Jebusites live there with the Benjamites. Now the house of Joseph attacked Bethel, and the LORD was with them. When they sent men to spy out Bethel (formerly called Luz), the spies saw a man coming out of the city and they said to him, "Show us how to get into the city and we will see that you are treated well." So he showed them, and they put the city to the sword but spared the man and his whole family. 베냐민 자손이 예루살렘에 사는 여부스 사람을 쫓아내지 못하였으므로, 여부스 사람이 오늘날까지 예루살렘에서 베냐민 자손과 함께 살고 있다. 요셉의 집안 역시 베델을 치러 올라갔다. 주님께서 그들과 함께 계셨다. 요셉 가문이 베델을 정찰하였는데, 그 성읍 이름이 전에는 루스였다. 정찰병들이 그 성읍에서 나오는 한 사람을 붙들고 말하였다. "성읍으로 들어가는 길이 어디인지 알려 주십시오. 은혜는 잊지 않겠습니다." 그 사람이 정찰병들에게 성읍으로 들어가는 길을 일러주니, 그들은 그리로 가서 그 성읍을 칼로 무찔렀다. 그러나 그 남자와 그의 가족은 모두 살려 보냈다.

He then went to the land of the Hittites, where he built a city and called it Luz, which is its name to this day. But Manasseh did not drive out the people of Beth Shan or Taanach or Dor or Ibleam or Megiddo and their surrounding settlements, for the Canaanites were determined to live in that land. When Israel became strong, they pressed the Canaanites into forced labor but never drove them out completely. Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites living in Gezer, but the Canaanites continued to live there among them. Neither did Zebulun drive out the Canaanites living in Kitron or Nahalol, who remained among them; but they did subject them to forced labor. 그 사람이 헷 사람들의 땅으로 가서 한 성읍을 세우고, 그 이름을 루스라 하였는데, 오늘날까지도 그 이름으로 불린다. 므낫세 지파가 벳산과 그 주변 마을들과, 다아낙과 그 주변 마을들과, 돌과 그 주변 마을들과, 이블르암과 그 주변 마을들과, 므깃도와 그 주변 마을들에 사는 주민을 몰아내지 못하였으므로, 가나안 사람들은 그 땅에서 살기로 마음을 굳혔다. 그런데 이스라엘 백성은 강성해진 다음에도 가나안 사람을 모조리 몰아내지 않고, 그들을 부역꾼으로 삼았다. 에브라임 지파가 게셀에 사는 가나안 사람을 몰아내지 못하였으므로, 가나안 사람이 아직도 게셀에서 그들 가운데 섞여 살고 있다. 스불론 지파가 기드론의 주민과 나할롤의 주민을 몰아내지 못하였으므로, 가나안 사람들이 그들 가운데 살면서 부역꾼이 되었다.

Nor did Asher drive out those living in Acco or Sidon or Ahlab or Aczib or Helbah or Aphek or Rehob, and because of this the people of Asher lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land. Neither did Naphtali drive out those living in Beth Shemesh or Beth Anath; but the Naphtalites too lived among the Canaanite inhabitants of the land, and those living in Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath became forced laborers for them. The Amorites confined the Danites to the hill country, not allowing them to come down into the plain. And the Amorites were determined also to hold out in Mount Heres, Aijalon and Shaalbim, but when the power of the house of Joseph increased, they too were pressed into forced labor. 아셀 지파는 악고의 주민과 시돈의 주민과 알랍과 악십과 헬바와 아벡과 르홉의 주민을 몰아내지 못하였다. 아셀 지파가 그 땅의 주민인 가나안 사람과 섞여 산 까닭은, 그들을 쫓아내지 못하였기 때문이다. 납달리 지파는 벳세메스 주민과 벳아낫 주민을 몰아내지 못하고, 그 땅의 주민인 가나안 사람과 섞여 살면서, 벳세메스와 벳아낫 주민을 부역꾼으로 삼았다. 아모리 사람은 단 지파 자손을 힘으로 산간지방에 몰아넣어, 낮은 지대로 내려오지 못하게 하였다. 그리고 아모리 사람은 헤레스 산과 아얄론과 사알빔에 살기로 마음을 굳혔으나, 요셉 가문이 강성하여지니, 그들은 요셉 가문의 부역꾼이 되었다.

The boundary of the Amorites was from Scorpion Pass to Sela and beyond. 아모리 사람의 경계선은 아그랍빔 비탈에 있는 바위에서부터 그 위쪽이다.
