여호수아 24장

 

Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Shechem. He summoned the elders, leaders, judges and officials of Israel, and they presented themselves before God. Joshua said to all the people, "This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: 'Long ago your forefathers, including Terah the father of Abraham and Nahor, lived beyond the River and worshiped other gods. But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the River and led him throughout Canaan and gave him many descendants. I gave him Isaac, and to Isaac I gave Jacob and Esau. I assigned the hill country of Seir to Esau, but Jacob and his sons went down to Egypt. " 'Then I sent Moses and Aaron, and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there, and I brought you out. 여호수아가 이스라엘의 모든 지파를 세겜에 모이게 하였다. 그가 이스라엘의 장로들과 그 우두머리들과 재판관들과 공직자들을 불러내니, 그들이 하나님 앞에 나와서 섰다. 그 때에 여호수아가 온 백성에게 말하였다. "주 이스라엘의 하나님이 이렇게 말씀하셨습니다. '옛날에 아브라함과 나홀의 아비 데라를 비롯한 너희 조상은 유프라테스 강 건너에 살면서 다른 신들을 섬겼다. 그러나 내가 너희 조상 아브라함을 강 건너에서 이끌어 내어, 그를 가나안 온 땅에 두루 다니게 하였으며, 자손을 많이 보게 하였다. 내가 그에게 이삭을 주었고, 이삭에게는 야곱과 에서를 주었다. 그리고 에서에게는 세일 산을 주어 차지하게 하였다. 야곱과 그의 아들들이 이집트로 내려갔지만, 내가 모세와 아론을 보내서, 이집트에 재앙을 내려 그들을 치고, 너희를 그 곳에서 이끌어 내었다. 내가 그들에게 어떻게 하였는지는, 너희가 이미 잘 알고 있다.

When I brought your fathers out of Egypt, you came to the sea, and the Egyptians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the Red Sea. But they cried to the LORD for help, and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians; he brought the sea over them and covered them. You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians. Then you lived in the desert for a long time. " 'I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan. They fought against you, but I gave them into your hands. I destroyed them from before you, and you took possession of their land. When Balak son of Zippor, the king of Moab, prepared to fight against Israel, he sent for Balaam son of Beor to put a curse on you. But I would not listen to Balaam, so he blessed you again and again, and I delivered you out of his hand. 이집트에서 구출된 너희의 조상이 홍해에 다다랐을 때에, 이집트 사람들이 병거와 마병을 거느리고 홍해까지 너희 조상을 추격하였다. 너희의 조상이 살려 달라고 나 주에게 부르짖을 때에, 내가 너희들과 이집트 사람들 사이에 흑암이 생기게 하고, 바닷물을 이끌어 와서 그들을 덮었다. 너희는 내가 이집트에서 한 일을 너희 눈으로 직접 보았다. 너희가 광야에서 오랫동안 지낸 뒤에, 나는 너희를 요단 강 동쪽에 살고 있는 아모리 사람들의 땅으로 들어가게 하였다. 그 때에 그들이 너희에게 대항하여 싸웠으나, 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주었으므로, 너희가 그 땅을 차지하였다. 나는 그들을 너희가 보는 앞에서 멸망시켰다. 그 때에 모압의 십볼의 아들 발락 왕이 일어나서, 이스라엘에 대항하여 싸웠다. 발락은 사람을 보내어 브올의 아들 발람을 불러다가, 너희를 저주하려 하였다. 그러나 내가 발람의 말을 들어주지 않았으므로, 발람이 오히려 너희를 축복하였고, 나는 너희를 발락의 손에서 구출해 주었다.

" 'Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho. The citizens of Jericho fought against you, as did also the Amorites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hittites, Girgashites, Hivites and Jebusites, but I gave them into your hands. I sent the hornet ahead of you, which drove them out before you--also the two Amorite kings. You did not do it with your own sword and bow. So I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build; and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant.' "Now fear the LORD and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your forefathers worshiped beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. But if serving the LORD seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your forefathers served beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." 너희가 요단 강을 건너서 여리고에 이르렀을 때에, 여리고 사람과 아모리 사람과 브리스 사람과 가나안 사람과 헷 사람과 기르가스 사람과 히위 사람과 여부스 사람이 너희를 대항하여 싸웠으므로, 내가 그들을 너희 손에 넘겨 주었다. 내가 너희보다 앞서 말벌을 보내어, 아모리 사람의 두 왕을 너희 앞에서 쫓아냈다. 이 두 왕을 몰아낸 것은 너희의 칼이나 활이 아니다. 너희가 일구지 아니한 땅과 너희가 세우지 아니한 성읍을 내가 너희에게 주어서, 너희가 그 안에서 살고 있다. 너희는 너희가 심지도 아니한 포도밭과 올리브 밭에서 열매를 따먹고 있는 것이다.' 이렇게 말씀하셨으니, 당신들은 이제 주님을 경외하면서, 그를 성실하고 진실하게 섬기십시오. 그리고 여러분은 여러분의 조상이 강 저쪽의 메소포타미아와 이집트에서 섬기던 신들을 버리고, 오직 주님만 섬기십시오. 주님을 섬기고 싶지 않거든, 조상들이 강 저쪽의 메소포타미아에서 섬기던 신들이든지, 아니면 당신들이 살고 있는 땅 아모리 사람들의 신들이든지, 당신들이 어떤 신들을 섬길 것인지를 오늘 선택하십시오. 나와 나의 집안은 주님을 섬길 것입니다."

Then the people answered, "Far be it from us to forsake the LORD to serve other gods! It was the LORD our God himself who brought us and our fathers up out of Egypt, from that land of slavery, and performed those great signs before our eyes. He protected us on our entire journey and among all the nations through which we traveled. And the LORD drove out before us all the nations, including the Amorites, who lived in the land. We too will serve the LORD, because he is our God." Joshua said to the people, "You are not able to serve the LORD. He is a holy God; he is a jealous God. He will not forgive your rebellion and your sins. If you forsake the LORD and serve foreign gods, he will turn and bring disaster on you and make an end of you, after he has been good to you." 백성들이 대답하였다. "주님을 저버리고 다른 신들을 섬기는 일은 우리가 절대로 하지 않겠습니다. 주 우리 하나님이 친히 우리와 우리 조상을 이집트 땅 종 되었던 집에서 이끌어 내시고, 우리가 보는 앞에서 그 큰 기적을 일으키셨습니다. 또 우리가 이리로 오는 동안에 줄곧 우리를 지켜 주셨고, 우리가 여러 민족들 사이를 뚫고 지나오는 동안에 줄곧 우리를 지켜 주셨습니다. 그리고 주님께서는 이 모든 민족을, 이 땅에 사는 아모리 사람까지도, 우리 앞에서 쫓아내셨습니다. 그러므로 우리는 주님을 섬기겠습니다. 오직 그분만이 우리의 하나님이십니다." 그러나 여호수아는 백성들에게 이렇게 말하였다. "당신들은 주님을 섬기지 못할 것입니다. 그분은 거룩하신 하나님이시며, 질투하시는 하나님이시기 때문에, 당신들의 허물과 죄를 용서하지 않을 것입니다. 만일 당신들이 주님을 저버리고 이방 신들을 섬기면, 그는 당신들에게 대항하여 돌아서서, 재앙을 내리시고, 당신들에게 좋게 대하신 뒤에라도 당신들을 멸망시키시고 말 것입니다."

But the people said to Joshua, "No! We will serve the LORD." Then Joshua said, "You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the LORD." "Yes, we are witnesses," they replied. "Now then," said Joshua, "throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the LORD, the God of Israel." And the people said to Joshua, "We will serve the LORD our God and obey him." On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he drew up for them decrees and laws. 그러자 백성들이 여호수아에게 말하였다. "아닙니다. 우리는 주님만을 섬기겠습니다." 여호수아가 백성에게 말하였다. "당신들이 주님을 택하고 그분만을 섬기겠다고 한 말에 대한 증인은 바로 여러분 자신들입니다." 그러자 그들은 말하였다. "우리가 증인입니다." 여호수아가 또 말하였다. "그러면 이제 당신들 가운데 있는 이방 신들을 내버리고, 마음을 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 바치십시오." 백성들이 여호수아에게 말하였다. "우리가 주 우리의 하나님을 섬기며, 그분의 말씀을 따르겠습니다." 그 날 여호수아가 세겜에서 백성들과 언약을 세우고, 그들이 지킬 율례와 법도를 만들어 주었다.

And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the LORD. "See!" he said to all the people. "This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God." Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance. After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died at the age of a hundred and ten. And they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath Serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gaash. 여호수아가 이 모든 말씀을 하나님의 율법책에 기록하고, 큰 돌을 가져다가 주님의 성소 곁에 있는 상수리나무 아래에 두고, 모든 백성에게 말하였다. "보십시오, 이 돌이 우리에게 증거가 될 것입니다. 주님께서 우리에게 하신 모든 말씀을 이 돌이 들었기 때문입니다. 여러분이 여러분의 하나님을 모른다고 할 때에, 이 돌이 여러분이 하나님을 배반하지 못하게 하는 증거가 될 것입니다." 여호수아는 백성들을 제각기 유산으로 받은 땅으로 돌려보냈다. 이 일을 마친 다음에, 주님의 종 눈의 아들 여호수아가 죽었다. 그의 나이는 백십 세였다. 사람들이 그를 그가 유산으로 받은 딤낫세라에 장사하였다. 그 곳은 가아스 산 북쪽 에브라임 산간지방에 있다.

Israel served the LORD throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had experienced everything the LORD had done for Israel. And Joseph's bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the tract of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Joseph's descendants. And Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah, which had been allotted to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim. 이스라엘은 여호수아의 생전에 줄곧 주님을 섬겼고, 여호수아가 죽은 뒤에도 주님께서 이스라엘에게 베푸신 모든 일을 아는 장로들이 살아 있는 날 동안에는 주님을 섬겼다. 이스라엘 자손은 이집트에서 가져 온 요셉의 유해를 세겜에 묻었다. 그 곳은 야곱이 세겜의 아버지 하몰의 자손에게 금 백 냥을 주고 산 땅인데, 요셉 자손의 유산이 된 곳이다. 아론의 아들 엘르아살도 죽었다. 사람들은 그를, 그의 아들 비느하스가 유산으로 받은, 에브라임의 산간지방인 기브아에 장사하였다.
