디모데전서 5장

Do not rebuke an older man harshly, but exhort him as if he were your father. Treat younger men as brothers, older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity. Give proper recognition to those widows who are really in need. But if a widow has children or grandchildren, these should learn first of all to put their religion into practice by caring for their own family and so repaying their parents and grandparents, for this is pleasing to God. The widow who is really in need and left all alone puts her hope in God and continues night and day to pray and to ask God for help. 나이가 많은 이를 나무라지 말고, 아버지를 대하듯이 권면하십시오. 젊은 남자는 형제를 대하듯이 권면하십시오. 나이가 많은 여자는 어머니를 대하듯이 권면하고, 젊은 여자는 자매를 대하듯이, 오로지 순결한 마음으로 권면하십시오. 참 과부인 과부를 존대하십시오. 어떤 과부에게 자녀들이나 손자들이 있으면, 그들은 먼저 자기네 가족에게 종교상의 의무를 행하는 것을 배워야 하고, 어버이에게 보답하는 것을 배워야 합니다. 이것이 바로 하나님께서 그들에게 원하시는 일입니다. 참 과부로서 의지할 데가 없는 이는, 하나님께 소망을 두고, 밤낮으로 끊임없이 간구와 기도를 드립니다.

But the widow who lives for pleasure is dead even while she lives. Give the people these instructions, too, so that no one may be open to blame. If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever. No widow may be put on the list of widows unless she is over sixty, has been faithful to her husband, and is well known for her good deeds, such as bringing up children, showing hospitality, washing the feet of the saints, helping those in trouble and devoting herself to all kinds of good deeds. 향락에 빠져서 사는 과부는, 살아 있으나 죽은 것입니다. 그들에게 이런 것을 명령하여, 그들이 비난을 받는 일이 없도록 하십시오. 누구든지 자기 친척 특히 가족을 돌보지 않으면, 그는 벌써 믿음을 저버린 사람이요, 믿지 않는 사람보다 더 나쁜 사람입니다. 과부로 명부에 올릴 이는, 예순 살이 덜 되어서는 안되고, 한 남편의 아내였던 사람이라야 합니다. 그는 착한 행실을 인정받는 사람이라야 하는데, 자녀를 잘 기르거나, 나그네를 잘 대접하거나, 성도들을 자기 집에 모시거나, 어려움을 당한 사람을 도와주거나, 모든 선한 일에 몸을 바친 사람이라야 합니다.

As for younger widows, do not put them on such a list. For when their sensual desires overcome their dedication to Christ, they want to marry. Thus they bring judgment on themselves, because they have broken their first pledge. Besides, they get into the habit of being idle and going about from house to house. And not only do they become idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to. So I counsel younger widows to marry, to have children, to manage their homes and to give the enemy no opportunity for slander. If any woman who is a believer has widows in her family, she should help them and not let the church be burdened with them, so that the church can help those widows who are really in need. The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says, "Do not muzzle the ox while it is treading out the grain," and "The worker deserves his wages." Do not entertain an accusation against an elder unless it is brought by two or three witnesses. Those who sin are to be rebuked publicly, so that the others may take warning. 어떤 여신도의 집안에 과부들이 있거든, 그 여신도가 그들을 도와주어야 할 것이요, 교회에 짐을 지우지 말아야 할 것입니다. 그렇게 하여야 교회가 참 과부들을 도울 수 있을 것입니다. 잘 다스리는 장로들은 두 배로 존경을 받아야 합니다. 특히 말씀을 전파하는 일과 가르치는 일에 수고하는 장로들은 더욱 그러하여야 합니다. 성경에 이르기를, "타작 마당에서 낟알을 밟아 떠는 소의 입에 망을 씌우지 말라" 하였고, "일꾼이 자기 삯을 받는 것은 마땅하다" 하였습니다. 장로에 대한 고발은 두 사람이나 세 사람의 증인이 없이는 받아들이지 마십시오. 죄를 짓는 사람을 모든 사람 앞에서 꾸짖어서, 나머지 사람들도 두려워하게 하십시오.

I charge you, in the sight of God and Christ Jesus and the elect angels, to keep these instructions without partiality, and to do nothing out of favoritism. Do not be hasty in the laying on of hands, and do not share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure. Stop drinking only water, and use a little wine because of your stomach and your frequent illnesses. The sins of some men are obvious, reaching the place of judgment ahead of them; the sins of others trail behind them.
