In those days when the number of disciples was increasing,
the Grecian Jews among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their
widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food.
So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said,
"It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in
order to wait on tables.
Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to
be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to
them
and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of
the word."
This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose Stephen,
a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Procorus, Nicanor,
Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas from Antioch, a convert to Judaism.
이 시기에 제자들이 점점 불어났다. 그런데 그리스 말을 하는 유대 사람들이 히브리 말을 하는 유대 사람들에게 불평을 터뜨렸다. 그것은
자기네 과부들이 날마다 구호 음식을 나누어 받는 일에 소홀히 여김을 받기 때문이었다.
그래서 열두 사도가 제자들을 모두 불러놓고 말하였다. "우리가 하나님의 말씀을 전하는 일은 제쳐놓고서 음식
베푸는 일에 힘쓰는 것은 좋지 못합니다.
그러니 형제자매
여러분, 신망이 있고 성령과 지혜가 충만한 사람 일곱을 여러분 가운데서 뽑으십시오. 그러면 그들에게 이 일을 맡기고,
우리는 기도하는 일과 말씀을 섬기는 일에 헌신하겠습니다."
모든 사람이 이 말을 좋게 받아들여서, 믿음과 성령이 충만한 사람인 스데반과 빌립과 브로고로와 니가노르와 디몬과 바메나와 안디옥 출신의 이방 사람으로서 유대교에 개종한 사람인 니골라를 뽑아서,
They presented these men to the apostles, who prayed and
laid their hands on them.
So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in
Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to
the faith.
Now Stephen, a man full of God's grace and power, did great wonders and
miraculous signs among the people.
Opposition arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of
the Freedmen (as it was called)--Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the
provinces of Cilicia and Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen,
but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the
Spirit by whom he spoke.
사도들 앞에 세웠다. 사도들은 기도하고, 그들에게 안수하였다.
하나님의 말씀이 계속 퍼져 나가서 예루살렘에 있는 제자들의 수가 부쩍 늘어가고, 제사장들
가운데서도 이 믿음에 순종하는 사람들이 많았다.
