At that time Herod the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus, and he said to his attendants, "This is John the Baptist; he has risen from the dead! That is why miraculous powers are at work in him." Now Herod had arrested John and bound him and put him in prison because of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, for John had been saying to him: "It is not lawful for you to have her." Herod wanted to kill John, but he was afraid of the people, because they considered him a prophet. 그 무렵에 분봉 왕 헤롯이 예수의 소문을 듣고서, 자기 신하들에게 말하였다. "이 사람은 세례자 요한이다. 그가 죽은 사람들 가운데서 살아났다. 그 때문에 그가 이런 놀라운 능력을 발휘하는 것이다." 헤롯은 일찍이, 자기 동생 빌립의 아내 헤로디아의 일 때문에 요한을 붙잡아다가 묶어서, 감옥에 가둔 일이 있었다. 그것은, 요한이 헤롯에게 "그 여자를 차지하는 것은 옳지 않습니다" 하고 여러 차례 말하였기 때문이다. 그래서 헤롯은 요한을 죽이려고 하였으나, 민중이 두려워서 그렇게 하지 못하였다. 그것은, 그들이 요한을 예언자로 여기고 있었기 때문이다.

On Herod's birthday the daughter of Herodias danced for them and pleased Herod so much that he promised with an oath to give her whatever she asked. Prompted by her mother, she said, "Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist." The king was distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he ordered that her request be granted and had John beheaded in the prison. 그런데 마침, 헤롯의 생일에 헤로디아의 딸이 손님들 앞에서 춤을 추어서, 헤롯을 즐겁게 해주었다. 그리하여 헤롯은 그 소녀에게, 청하는 것은 무엇이든지 주겠다고, 맹세로써 약속하였다. 소녀는 자기 어머니가 시키는 대로 말하였다. "세례자 요한의 머리를 쟁반에 담아서 이리로 가져다 주십시오." 왕은 마음이 괴로웠지만, 이미 맹세를 하였고, 또 손님들이 보고 있는 앞이므로, 그렇게 해 주라는 명령을 내리게 되었다. 그래서 그는 사람을 보내서, 감옥에서 요한의 목을 베게 하였다.

His head was brought in on a platter and given to the girl, who carried it to her mother. John's disciples came and took his body and buried it. Then they went and told Jesus. When Jesus heard what had happened, he withdrew by boat privately to a solitary place. Hearing of this, the crowds followed him on foot from the towns. When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick. As evening approached, the disciples came to him and said, "This is a remote place, and it's already getting late. Send the crowds away, so they can go to the villages and buy themselves some food." 그 머리를 쟁반에 담아서 가져다가 소녀에게 주니, 소녀는 그것을 자기 어머니에게 가져갔다. 요한의 제자들이 와서, 그 시체를 거두어다가 장사 지내고 나서, 예수께 가서 알려드렸다. 예수께서 그 말을 들으시고, 거기에서 배를 타고, 따로 외딴 곳으로 물러가셨다. 이 소문이 퍼지니, 무리가 여러 동네에서 몰려 나와서, 걸어서 예수를 따라왔다. 예수께서 배에서 내려서, 큰 무리를 보시고, 그들을 불쌍히 여기시고, 그들 가운데서 앓는 사람들을 고쳐 주셨다. 저녁때가 되니, 제자들이 예수께 다가와서 말하였다. "여기는 빈 들이고, 날도 이미 저물었습니다. 그러니 무리를 헤쳐 보내어, 제각기 먹을 것을 사먹게, 마을로 보내시는 것이 좋겠습니다."

Jesus replied, "They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat." "We have here only five loaves of bread and two fish," they answered. "Bring them here to me," he said. And he directed the people to sit down on the grass. Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke the loaves. Then he gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people. They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. 예수께서 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "그들이 물러갈 필요 없다. 너희가 그들에게 먹을 것을 주어라." 제자들이 예수께 말하였다. "우리에게 있는 것이라고는, 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리밖에 없습니다." 이 때에 예수께서 말씀하셨다. "그것들을 이리로 가져 오너라." 그리고 예수께서는 무리를 풀밭에 앉게 하시고 나서, 빵 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리를 들고, 하늘을 우러러 보시고 축복 기도를 드리신 다음에, 떼어서 제자들에게 주시니, 제자들이 이를 무리에게 나누어주었다. 그들은 모두 배불리 먹었다. 남은 부스러기를 모으니, 열두 광주리에 가득 찼다.

The number of those who ate was about five thousand men, besides women and children. Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 먹은 사람은 여자들과 어린아이들 외에, 어른 남자만도 오천 명쯤 되었다. 예수께서는 곧 제자들을 재촉하여 배에 태워서, 자기보다 먼저 건너편으로 가게 하시고, 그 동안에 무리를 헤쳐 보내셨다. 무리를 헤쳐 보내신 뒤에, 예수께서는 따로 기도하시려고 산에 올라가셨다. 날이 이미 저물었을 때에, 예수께서는 홀로 거기에 계셨다. 제자들이 탄 배는, 그 사이에 이미 육지에서 멀리 떨어져 있었는데, 풍랑에 몹시 시달리고 있었다. 바람이 거슬러서 불어왔기 때문이다. 이른 새벽에 예수께서 바다 위로 걸어서 제자들에게로 가셨다.

When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. "It's a ghost," they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid." "Lord, if it's you," Peter replied, "tell me to come to you on the water." "Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" 제자들이, 예수께서 바다 위로 걸어오시는 것을 보고, 겁에 질려서 "유령이다!" 하며 두려워서 소리를 질렀다. [예수께서] 곧 그들에게 말씀하셨다. "안심하여라. 나다. 두려워하지 말아라." 베드로가 예수께 말하였다. "주님, 주님이시면, 나더러 물 위로 걸어서, 주님께로 오라고 명령하십시오." 예수께서 "오너라!" 하고 말씀하셨다. 베드로는 배에서 내려, 물 위로 걸어서, 예수께로 갔다. 그러나 베드로는 [거센] 바람이 불어오는 것을 보고, 무서움에 사로잡혀서, 물에 빠져 들어가게 되었다. 그 때에 그는 "주님, 살려 주십시오" 하고 외쳤다.

Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?" And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." When they had crossed over, they landed at Gennesaret. And when the men of that place recognized Jesus, they sent word to all the surrounding country. People brought all their sick to him 예수께서 곧 손을 내밀어서, 그를 붙잡고 말씀하셨다. "믿음이 적은 사람아, 왜 의심하였느냐?" 그리고 그들이 함께 배에 오르니, 바람이 그쳤다. 배 안에 있던 사람들은 그에게 무릎을 꿇고 말하였다. "선생님은 참으로 하나님의 아들이십니다." 그들은 바다를 건너가서, 게네사렛 땅에 이르렀다. 그 곳 사람들이 예수를 알아보고, 주위의 온 지방으로 사람을 보내어, 병자를 모두 그에게 데려왔다.

and begged him to let the sick just touch the edge of his cloak, and all who touched him were healed. 그들은 예수께, 그의 옷술만에라도 손을 대게 해 달라고 간청하였다. 그리고 손을 댄 사람은 모두 나았다.
