Now Jehoshaphat had great wealth and honor, and he allied himself with Ahab by marriage. Some years later he went down to visit Ahab in Samaria. Ahab slaughtered many sheep and cattle for him and the people with him and urged him to attack Ramoth Gilead. Ahab king of Israel asked Jehoshaphat king of Judah, "Will you go with me against Ramoth Gilead?" Jehoshaphat replied, "I am as you are, and my people as your people; we will join you in the war." But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel, "First seek the counsel of the LORD." So the king of Israel brought together the prophets--four hundred men--and asked them, "Shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" "Go," they answered, "for God will give it into the king's hand." 여호사밧은 재물을 많이 모으고, 큰 영예를 얻었다. 그는 아합 가문과 혼인의 유대를 맺었다. 몇 해 뒤에 여호사밧이 사마리아로 가서 아합을 방문하니, 아합이 여호사밧과 그를 수행하는 사람들을 대접하려고 많은 양과 소를 잡았다. 아합은 여호사밧에게 함께 길르앗 라못을 치러 올라가자고 제안하였다. 이스라엘의 아합 왕이 유다의 여호사밧 왕에게 물었다. "길르앗의 라못을 치러 나와 함께 올라가시겠습니까?" 여호사밧이 대답하였다. "내 생각이 바로 임금님의 생각이고, 내가 통솔하는 군대가 곧 임금님의 군대입니다. 우리는 임금님과 함께 싸우러 나가겠습니다." 그러면서도 여호사밧은 이스라엘 왕에게 말하였다. "그러나 먼저 주님의 뜻을 알아봄이 좋을 듯합니다." 그러자 이스라엘 왕은 사백 명이나 되는 예언자들을 모아 놓고 그들에게 물었다. "우리가 길르앗의 라못을 치러 올라가는 것이 좋겠소, 아니면 그만두는 것이 좋겠소?" 그러자 예언자들이 대답하였다. "올라가십시오. 하나님께서 그 성을 임금님의 손에 넘겨 주실 것입니다."

But Jehoshaphat asked, "Is there not a prophet of the LORD here whom we can inquire of?" The king of Israel answered Jehoshaphat, "There is still one man through whom we can inquire of the LORD, but I hate him because he never prophesies anything good about me, but always bad. He is Micaiah son of Imlah." "The king should not say that," Jehoshaphat replied. So the king of Israel called one of his officials and said, "Bring Micaiah son of Imlah at once." Dressed in their royal robes, the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah were sitting on their thrones at the threshing floor by the entrance to the gate of Samaria, with all the prophets prophesying before them. Now Zedekiah son of Kenaanah had made iron horns, and he declared, "This is what the LORD says: 'With these you will gore the Arameans until they are destroyed.' " 여호사밧이 물었다. "이믈라의 아들 미가야를 속히 데려 오너라." 그 때에 이스라엘 왕과 유다의 여호사밧 왕은 왕복을 입고 사마리아 성문 어귀 타작 마당에 마련된 보좌에 앉아 있었고, 예언자들은 모두 그 두 왕 앞에서 예언을 하고 있었다. 그 예언자들 가운데서 그나아나의 아들 시드기야는 자신이 만든 철뿔들을 가지고 나와서 말하였다. "주님께서 이렇게 말씀하십니다. '너 아합은 철로 만든 이 뿔을 가지고 시리아 사람들을 찌르되, 그들이 모두 파멸될 때까지 그렇게 할 것이다' 하십니다."

All the other prophets were prophesying the same thing. "Attack Ramoth Gilead and be victorious," they said, "for the LORD will give it into the king's hand." The messenger who had gone to summon Micaiah said to him, "Look, as one man the other prophets are predicting success for the king. Let your word agree with theirs, and speak favorably." But Micaiah said, "As surely as the LORD lives, I can tell him only what my God says." When he arrived, the king asked him, "Micaiah, shall we go to war against Ramoth Gilead, or shall I refrain?" "Attack and be victorious," he answered, "for they will be given into your hand." The king said to him, "How many times must I make you swear to tell me nothing but the truth in the name of the LORD ?" 그러자 다른 예언자들도 모두 그와 같은 예언을 하며 말하였다. "길르앗의 라못으로 진군하십시오. 승리는 임금님의 것입니다. 주님께서 이미 그 성을 임금님의 손에 넘기셨습니다." 미가야를 데리러 간 신하가 미가야에게 말하였다. "이것 보십시오, 다른 예언자들이 모두 하나같이 왕의 승리를 예언하였으니, 예언자께서도 그들이 한 것 같이 왕의 승리를 예언하시는 것이 좋을 것이오." 미가야가 대답하였다. "주님께서 살아 계심을 두고 맹세하지만, 나는 다만 내 하나님께서 말씀하신 것만을 말하겠습니다." 그가 왕 앞에 나오자, 왕이 그에게 물었다. "미가야는 대답하시오. 우리가 길르앗의 라못을 치러 올라가는 것이 좋겠소, 아니면 내가 그만두는 것이 좋겠소?" 미가야가 대답하였다. "올라가십시오. 승리는 임금님의 것입니다. 그들은 이미 임금님의 손에 넘어온 것이나 다름 없습니다." 그러나 왕이 그에게 다시 말하였다. "그대가 주님의 이름으로 나에게 말을 할 때에는 진실을 말해야 한다고 누차 일렀는데, 내가 얼마나 더 똑같은 말을 되풀이 해야 하겠소?"

Then Micaiah answered, "I saw all Israel scattered on the hills like sheep without a shepherd, and the LORD said, 'These people have no master. Let each one go home in peace.' " The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "Didn't I tell you that he never prophesies anything good about me, but only bad?" Micaiah continued, "Therefore hear the word of the LORD : I saw the LORD sitting on his throne with all the host of heaven standing on his right and on his left. And the LORD said, 'Who will entice Ahab king of Israel into attacking Ramoth Gilead and going to his death there?' one suggested this, and another that. Finally, a spirit came forward, stood before the LORD and said, 'I will entice him.' " 'By what means?' the LORD asked. 미가야가 대답하였다. "내가 보니, 온 이스라엘이 이산 저산에 흩어져 있습니다. 마치 목자 없는 양 떼 같습니다. 주님께서 말씀하시기를 '이들에게는 인도자가 없다. 제각기 집으로 평안히 돌아가게 하여라' 하십니다." 이스라엘 왕이 여호사밧에게 말하였다. "보십시오, 그는 나에게 늘 길한 것은 예언하지 않고, 흉한 것만을 예언한다고 말씀드리지 않았습니까?" 미가야가 말을 계속하였다. "그러므로 이제 주님의 말씀을 들으십시오. 내가 보니, 주님께서 보좌에 앉으시고, 그 좌우에는 하늘의 모든 군대가 둘러 서 있는데, 주님께서 물으십니다. '누가 이스라엘의 아합 왕을 꾀어내어, 그로 하여금 길르앗의 라못으로 올라가게 하여 거기에서 죽게 하겠느냐?' 그러자 그들은 이렇게 하자, 또는 저렇게 하자, 저마다 자기들의 의견을 말하는데, 한 영이 주님 앞에 나서서 말합니다. '내가 가서 그를 꾀어내겠습니다.' 그러자 주님께서 그에게 물으십니다. '어떻게 그를 꾀어내겠느냐?'

" 'I will go and be a lying spirit in the mouths of all his prophets,' he said. " 'You will succeed in enticing him,' said the LORD. 'Go and do it.' "So now the LORD has put a lying spirit in the mouths of these prophets of yours. The LORD has decreed disaster for you." Then Zedekiah son of Kenaanah went up and slapped Micaiah in the face. "Which way did the spirit from the LORD go when he went from me to speak to you?" he asked. Micaiah replied, "You will find out on the day you go to hide in an inner room." The king of Israel then ordered, "Take Micaiah and send him back to Amon the ruler of the city and to Joash the king's son, 그러자 그가 대답합니다. '내가 가서 아합의 모든 예언자들이 모두 거짓말을 하도록 시키겠습니다.' 그러자 주님께서 말씀하십니다. and say, 'This is what the king says: Put this fellow in prison and give him nothing but bread and water until I return safely.' " Micaiah declared, "If you ever return safely, the LORD has not spoken through me." Then he added, "Mark my words, all you people!" So the king of Israel and Jehoshaphat king of Judah went up to Ramoth Gilead. The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, "I will enter the battle in disguise, but you wear your royal robes." So the king of Israel disguised himself and went into battle. Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, "Do not fight with anyone, small or great, except the king of Israel." 그리고 내가 명령하는 것이니, 이 자를 감옥에 가두고, 내가 평안히 돌아올 때까지 빵과 물을 죽지 않을 만큼만 먹이라고 하여라." 미가야가 말하였다. "임금님께서 정말로 평안히 돌아오실 수 있다면, 주님께서 나를 시켜서 이런 말씀을 하지 않으셨을 것입니다." 미가야는 한 마디 덧붙였다. "여기에 있는 모든 백성은, 내 말을 잘 기억하여 두시오!" 이스라엘의 아합 왕과 유다의 여호사밧 왕은 시리아와 싸우려고 길르앗의 라못으로 올라갔다. 이스라엘의 아합 왕이 여호사밧에게 말하였다. "나는 변장을 하고 싸움터로 들어갈 터이니, 임금님께서는 왕복을 그대로 입고 나가십시오." 그런 다음에, 이스라엘 왕은 변장을 하였고, 그들은 싸움터로 들어갔다. 시리아 왕은 자기와 함께 있는 병거대 지휘관들에게 말하였다. "귀관들은 작은 자나 큰 자를 상대하여 싸우지 말고, 오직 이스라엘 왕만 공격하시오."

When the chariot commanders saw Jehoshaphat, they thought, "This is the king of Israel." So they turned to attack him, but Jehoshaphat cried out, and the LORD helped him. God drew them away from him, for when the chariot commanders saw that he was not the king of Israel, they stopped pursuing him. But someone drew his bow at random and hit the king of Israel between the sections of his armor. The king told the chariot driver, "Wheel around and get me out of the fighting. I've been wounded." All day long the battle raged, and the king of Israel propped himself up in his chariot facing the Arameans until evening. Then at sunset he died. 병거대 지휘관들이 여호사밧을 보고 "저 자가 이스라엘 왕이다" 하며, 그와 싸우려고 달려들었다. 여호사밧이 기겁을 하여 소리를 쳤다. 주님께서 그를 도우셨다. 하나님께서 그들을 그에게서 떠나가게 하신 것이다. 병거대 지휘관들은, 그가 이스라엘 왕이 아님을 알고, 그를 추적하기를 그만두고 돌아섰다. 그런데 한 군인이 무심코 활을 당긴 것이 이스라엘 왕을 명중시켰다. 화살이 갑옷 가슴막이 이음새 사이를 뚫고 들어간 것이다. 왕은 자기의 병거를 모는 부하에게 말하였다. "돌아서서, 이 싸움터에서 빠져 나가자. 내가 부상을 입었다." 그러나 그 날은 특히 싸움이 격렬하였으므로, 이스라엘 왕은 시리아 군대를 맞이하여 그의 병거 안에서 저녁때까지 겨우 힘을 지탱하다가, 해거름에 죽고 말았다.
