열왕기하 4장

 

The wife of a man from the company of the prophets cried out to Elisha, "Your servant my husband is dead, and you know that he revered the LORD. But now his creditor is coming to take my two boys as his slaves." Elisha replied to her, "How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?" "Your servant has nothing there at all," she said, "except a little oil." Elisha said, "Go around and ask all your neighbors for empty jars. Don't ask for just a few. Then go inside and shut the door behind you and your sons. Pour oil into all the jars, and as each is filled, put it to one side." She left him and afterward shut the door behind her and her sons. They brought the jars to her and she kept pouring. 예언자 수련생들의 아내 가운데서 남편을 잃은 어느 한 여인이, 엘리사에게 부르짖으며 호소하였다. "예언자님의 종인 저의 남편이 죽었습니다. 예언자님께서도 아시다시피 그는 주님을 경외하는 사람이었습니다. 그런데 빚을 준 사람이 와서, 저의 두 아들을 자기의 노예로 삼으려고 데려가려 합니다." 엘리사가 그 여인에게 말하였다. "내가 어떻게 하면 도움이 되겠는지 알려 주시오. 집 안에 무엇이 남아 있소?" 그 여인이 대답하였다. "집 안에는 기름 한 병 말고는 아무것도 없습니다." 엘리사가 말하였다. "나가서 이웃 사람들에게 빈 그릇들을 빌려 오시오. 되도록 많이 빌려 와서, 두 아들만 데리고 집으로 들어가, 문을 닫고, 그 그릇마다 모두 기름을 부어서, 채워지는 대로 옆으로 옮겨 놓으시오." 그 여인은 엘리사 곁을 떠나, 두 아들과 함께 집으로 들어가 문을 닫고, 그 아들들이 가져 온 그릇에 기름을 부었다.

When all the jars were full, she said to her son, "Bring me another one." But he replied, "There is not a jar left." Then the oil stopped flowing. She went and told the man of God, and he said, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left." One day Elisha went to Shunem. And a well-to-do woman was there, who urged him to stay for a meal. So whenever he came by, he stopped there to eat. She said to her husband, "I know that this man who often comes our way is a holy man of God. Let's make a small room on the roof and put in it a bed and a table, a chair and a lamp for him. Then he can stay there whenever he comes to us." 그릇마다 가득 차자, 그 여인은 아들들에게 물었다. "그릇이 더 없느냐?" 아들들은 그릇이 이제 더 없다고 대답하였다. 그러자 기름은 더 이상 나오지 않았다. 여인은 하나님의 사람에게로 가서, 이 사실을 알렸다. 하나님의 사람이 그에게 말하였다. "가서 그 기름을 팔아 빚을 갚고, 그 나머지는 모자의 생활비로 쓰도록 하시오." 하루는 엘리사가 수넴 마을을 지나가게 되었는데, 그 곳에 한 부유한 여인이 있었다. 그가 엘리사에게 음식을 대접하고 싶어하여, 엘리사는 그 곳을 지나칠 때마다 거기에 들러서 음식을 먹곤 하였다. 그 여인이 자기 남편에게 말하였다. "여보, 우리 앞을 늘 지나다니는 그가 거룩한 하나님의 사람인 것을 내가 압니다. 이제 옥상에 벽으로 둘러친 작은 다락방을 하나 만들어서, 거기에 침대와 탁자와 의자와 등잔을 갖추어 놓아 둡시다. 그래서 그가 우리 집에 들르실 때마다, 그 곳에 들어가서 쉬시도록 합시다."

One day when Elisha came, he went up to his room and lay down there. He said to his servant Gehazi, "Call the Shunammite." So he called her, and she stood before him. Elisha said to him, "Tell her, 'You have gone to all this trouble for us. Now what can be done for you? Can we speak on your behalf to the king or the commander of the army?' " She replied, "I have a home among my own people." "What can be done for her?" Elisha asked. Gehazi said, "Well, she has no son and her husband is old." Then Elisha said, "Call her." So he called her, and she stood in the doorway. 하루는 엘리사가 거기에 갔다가, 그 다락방에 올라가 누워 쉬게 되었다. 엘리사가 자기의 젊은 시종 게하시에게, 수넴 여인을 불러오라고 하였다. 게하시가 그 여인을 불러오니, 그 여인이 엘리사 앞에 섰다. 엘리사가 게하시에게 말하였다. "부인께 이렇게 여쭈어라. '부인, 우리를 돌보시느라 수고가 너무 많소. 내가 부인에게 무엇을 해드리면 좋겠소? 부인을 위하여 왕이나 군사령관에게 무엇을 좀 부탁해 드릴까요?'" 그러나 그 여인은 대답하였다. "저는 저의 백성과 한데 어울려 잘 지내고 있습니다." 엘리사가 게하시에게 물었다. "그러면 내가 이 부인에게 무엇을 해주면 좋을까?" 게하시가 대답하였다. "생각나는 것이 있습니다. 이 부인에게는 아들이 없습니다. 그의 남편은 너무 늙었습니다." 엘리사는 게하시에게 그 여인을 다시 불러오게 하였다. 게하시가 그 여인을 부르니, 그 여인이 문 안에 들어섰다.

"About this time next year," Elisha said, "you will hold a son in your arms." "No, my lord," she objected. "Don't mislead your servant, O man of God!" But the woman became pregnant, and the next year about that same time she gave birth to a son, just as Elisha had told her. The child grew, and one day he went out to his father, who was with the reapers. "My head! My head!" he said to his father. His father told a servant, "Carry him to his mother." After the servant had lifted him up and carried him to his mother, the boy sat on her lap until noon, and then he died. 엘리사가 말하였다. "내년 이맘때가 되면, 부인께서는 품에 한 아들을 안고 있을 것이오." 여인이 대답하였다. "그런 말씀 마십시오. 예언자님! 하나님의 사람께서도 저 같은 사람에게 농담을 하시는 것입니까?" 그러나 그 여인은 임신하였고, 엘리사가 말한 대로 다음해 같은 때에 아들을 낳았다. 그 아이가 자랐는데, 하루는 그 아이가, 자기 아버지가 곡식 베는 사람들과 함께 곡식을 거두고 있는 곳으로 나갔다. 갑자기 그 아이가 "아이고, 머리야! 아이고, 머리야!" 하면서, 아버지가 듣는 데서 비명을 질렀다. 그의 아버지는 함께 있는 젊은 일꾼더러, 그 아이를 안아서, 어머니에게 데려다 주라고 일렀다. 그 일꾼은 그 아이를 안아서, 그의 어머니에게로 데리고 갔다. 그 아이는 점심 때까지 어머니의 무릎에 누워 있다가, 마침내 죽고 말았다.

She went up and laid him on the bed of the man of God, then shut the door and went out. She called her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and a donkey so I can go to the man of God quickly and return." "Why go to him today?" he asked. "It's not the New Moon or the Sabbath." "It's all right," she said. She saddled the donkey and said to her servant, "Lead on; don't slow down for me unless I tell you." So she set out and came to the man of God at Mount Carmel. When he saw her in the distance, the man of God said to his servant Gehazi, "Look! There's the Shunammite! 그러자 그 여인은 옥상으로 올라가서, 하나님의 사람이 눕던 침대 위에 그 아들을 눕히고, 문을 닫고 나왔다. 그리고 그 여인은 남편을 불러서 이렇게 말하였다. "일꾼 한 사람과 암나귀 한 마리를 나에게 보내 주십시오. 내가 얼른 하나님의 사람에게 다녀오겠습니다." 남편이 말하였다. "왜 하필 오늘 그에게 가려고 하오? 오늘은 초하루도 아니고 안식일도 아니지 않소?" 그러나 그의 아내는 걱정하지 말라고 대답하며, 나귀에 안장을 지우고, 일꾼에게 말하였다. "내가 말하기 전까지는 늦추지 말고, 힘껏 달려가자." 이 여인은 곧 갈멜 산에 있는 하나님의 사람에게 이르렀다. 때마침 하나님의 사람이 멀리서 그 여인을 보고, 그의 시종 게하시에게 말하였다. "저기 수넴 여인이 오고 있구나.

Run to meet her and ask her, 'Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is your child all right?' " "Everything is all right," she said. When she reached the man of God at the mountain, she took hold of his feet. Gehazi came over to push her away, but the man of God said, "Leave her alone! She is in bitter distress, but the LORD has hidden it from me and has not told me why." "Did I ask you for a son, my lord?" she said. "Didn't I tell you, 'Don't raise my hopes'?" Elisha said to Gehazi, "Tuck your cloak into your belt, take my staff in your hand and run. If you meet anyone, do not greet him, and if anyone greets you, do not answer. Lay my staff on the boy's face." But the child's mother said, "As surely as the LORD lives and as you live, I will not leave you." So he got up and followed her. 달려가서 맞아라. 부인께 인사를 하고, 바깥 어른께서도 별고 없으신지, 그리고 아이도 건강한지 물어 보아라." 게하시가 달려가서 문안하자, 그 여인은 모두 별고 없다고 대답하였다. 그런 다음에 곧 그 여인은 산에 있는 하나님의 사람에게로 가서, 그의 발을 꼭 껴안았다. 게하시가 그 여인을 떼어 놓으려고 다가갔으나, 하나님의 사람이 말리면서 말하였다. "그대로 두어라. 부인의 마음 속에 무엇인가 쓰라린 괴로움이 있는 것 같구나. 주님께서는, 그가 겪은 고통을 나에게는 감추시고, 알려 주지 않으셨다." 여인이 엘리사에게 말하였다. "예언자님, 제가 언제 아들을 달라고 하였습니까? 저는 오히려 저 같은 사람에게 농담을 하지 마시라고 말씀드리지 않았습니까?" 엘리사가 게하시에게 말하였다. "허리를 단단히 묶고, 내 지팡이를 들고 가거라. 길을 가다가 어떤 사람을 만나도 인사를 해서는 안 된다. 인사를 받더라도 그에게 대꾸를 해서는 안 된다. 그리고 가거든, 내 지팡이를 그 아이의 얼굴 위에 놓아라." 그러나 아이의 어머니는 말하였다. "주님의 살아 계심과 예언자님의 목숨이 살아 계심을 두고 맹세합니다. 저는 어떤 일이 있어도 예언자님을 떠나지 않겠습니다." 엘리사는 하는 수 없이 일어나서, 그 부인을 따라 나섰다.

Gehazi went on ahead and laid the staff on the boy's face, but there was no sound or response. So Gehazi went back to meet Elisha and told him, "The boy has not awakened." When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy lying dead on his couch. He went in, shut the door on the two of them and prayed to the LORD. Then he got on the bed and lay upon the boy, mouth to mouth, eyes to eyes, hands to hands. As he stretched himself out upon him, the boy's body grew warm. Elisha turned away and walked back and forth in the room and then got on the bed and stretched out upon him once more. The boy sneezed seven times and opened his eyes. 게하시가 그들보다 먼저 가서, 그 아이의 얼굴에 지팡이를 올려놓아 보았으나, 아무런 소리도 없었고, 아무런 기척도 없었다. 게하시가 엘리사를 맞으려고 되돌아와서, 그에게 말하였다. "아이가 깨어나지 않습니다." 엘리사가 집 안에 들어가서 보니, 그 아이는 죽어 있었고, 그 죽은 아이는 엘리사가 눕던 침대 위에 뉘어 있었다. 엘리사는 방 안으로 들어가서 문을 닫았다. 방 안에는 엘리사와 그 죽은 아이 둘뿐이었다. 엘리사는 주님께 기도를 드린 다음에, 침대 위로 올라가서, 그 아이 위에 몸을 포개어 엎드렸다. 자기 입을 그 아이의 입 위에 두고, 자기 눈을 그 아이의 눈 위에 두고, 자기의 손을 그 아이의 손 위에 놓고, 그 아이 위에 엎드리니, 아, 아이의 몸이 따뜻해지기 시작하는 것이 아닌가! 엘리사가 잠시 내려앉았다가, 집 안 이곳 저곳을 한 번 거닌 뒤에 다시 올라가서, 그 아이의 몸 위에 몸을 포개어 엎드리니, 마침내 그 아이가 일곱 번이나 재채기를 한 다음에 눈을 떴다.

Elisha summoned Gehazi and said, "Call the Shunammite." And he did. When she came, he said, "Take your son." She came in, fell at his feet and bowed to the ground. Then she took her son and went out. Elisha returned to Gilgal and there was a famine in that region. While the company of the prophets was meeting with him, he said to his servant, "Put on the large pot and cook some stew for these men." One of them went out into the fields to gather herbs and found a wild vine. He gathered some of its gourds and filled the fold of his cloak. When he returned, he cut them up into the pot of stew, though no one knew what they were. The stew was poured out for the men, but as they began to eat it, they cried out, "O man of God, there is death in the pot!" And they could not eat it. 엘리사가 게하시를 불러서, 수넴 여인을 불러오게 하였다. 게하시가 그 여인을 불렀다. 그 여인이 들어오니, 엘리사가 그 여인에게 아들을 데리고 가라고 하였다. 그 여인은 들어와서, 예언자의 발에 얼굴을 대고, 땅에 엎드려 큰 절을 하고, 아들을 데리고 나갔다. 엘리사가 길갈로 돌아왔다. 그 곳은 엘리사가 예언자 수련생들을 데리고 사는 곳이었다. 마침 그 때에 그 땅에 흉년이 들었다. 엘리사가 한 종에게, 큰 솥을 걸어 놓고 예언자 수련생들이 먹을 국을 끓이라고 하였다. 한 사람이 나물을 캐려고 들에 나갔다가 들포도덩굴을 발견하고서, 그 덩굴을 뜯어, 옷에 가득 담아 가지고 돌아와서, 그것이 무엇인지도 잘 모르는 채로 국솥에 썰어 넣었다. 그들이 각자 국을 떠다 먹으려고 맛을 보다가, 깜짝 놀라 하나님의 사람을 부르며, 그 솥에 사람을 죽게 하는 독이 들어 있다고 외쳤다. 그래서 그들이 그 국을 먹지 못하고 있는데,

Elisha said, "Get some flour." He put it into the pot and said, "Serve it to the people to eat." And there was nothing harmful in the pot. A man came from Baal Shalishah, bringing the man of God twenty loaves of barley bread baked from the first ripe grain, along with some heads of new grain. "Give it to the people to eat," Elisha said. "How can I set this before a hundred men?" his servant asked. But Elisha answered, "Give it to the people to eat. For this is what the LORD says: 'They will eat and have some left over.' " Then he set it before them, and they ate and had some left over, according to the word of the LORD. 엘리사가 밀가루를 가져 오라고 하여, 그 밀가루를 솥에 뿌린 뒤에, 이제는 먹어도 되니 사람들에게 떠다 주라고 하였다. 그러고 나니 정말로 솥 안에는 독이 전혀 없었다. 어떤 사람이 바알살리사에서 왔다. 그런데 맨 먼저 거둔 보리로 만든 보리빵 스무 덩이와, 자루에 가득 담은 햇곡식을, 하나님의 사람에게 가지고 왔다. 엘리사가 그것을 사람들에게 주어서 먹게 하라고 하였더니, 그의 시종은 백여 명이나 되는 사람들 앞에 그것을 어떻게 내놓겠느냐고 하였다. 그러나 엘리사가 말하였다. "사람들에게 주어서 먹게 하여라. 주님께서 말씀하시기를, 먹고도 남을 것이라고 하셨다." 그리하여 그것을 백 명이나 되는 사람들 앞에 내놓으니, 주님의 말씀처럼 사람들이 배불리 먹고도 남았다.
