사무엘상 7장

 

So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD. They took it to Abinadab's house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the LORD. It was a long time, twenty years in all, that the ark remained at Kiriath Jearim, and all the people of Israel mourned and sought after the LORD. And Samuel said to the whole house of Israel, "If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines." So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the LORD only. Then Samuel said, "Assemble all Israel at Mizpah and I will intercede with the LORD for you." 기럇여아림 사람들이 와서 주님의 궤를 옮겨, 언덕 위에 있는 아비나답의 집에 들여 놓고, 그의 아들 엘리아살을 거룩히 구별해 세워서, 주님의 궤를 지키게 하였다. 궤가 기럇여아림에 머문 날로부터 약 스무 해 동안, 오랜 세월이 지났다. 이 기간에 이스라엘의 온 족속은 주님을 사모하였다. 사무엘이 이스라엘 온 족속에게 말하였다. "여러분이 온전한 마음으로 주님께 돌아오려거든, 이방의 신들과 아스다롯 여신상들을 없애 버리고, 주님께만 마음을 두고 그분만을 섬기십시오. 그러면 주님께서 여러분을 블레셋 사람의 손에서 건져 주실 것입니다." 이 말을 듣고 이스라엘 자손이 바알과 아스다롯 신상들을 없애 버리고, 주님만을 섬겼다. 그 때에 사무엘이 이스라엘 사람들을 모두 미스바로 모이게 하였다. 그들의 죄를 용서하여 달라고 주님께 기도를 드리려는 것이었다.

When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. on that day they fasted and there they confessed, "We have sinned against the LORD." And Samuel was leader of Israel at Mizpah. When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. And when the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines. They said to Samuel, "Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines." Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it up as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on Israel's behalf, and the LORD answered him. While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the LORD thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites. 그들은 미스바에 모여서 물을 길어다가, 그것을 제물로 삼아 주님 앞에 쏟아붓고, 그 날 종일 금식하였다. 그리고 거기에서 "우리가 주님을 거역하여 죄를 지었습니다!" 하고 고백하였다. 미스바는, 사무엘이 이스라엘 자손 사이의 다툼을 중재하던 곳이다. 이스라엘 자손이 미스바에 모였다는 소식이 블레셋 사람에게 들어가니, 블레셋 통치자들이 이스라엘을 치려고 올라왔다. 이스라엘 자손은 그 소식을 듣고, 블레셋 사람들을 두려워하였다. 그들이 사무엘에게 가서 "주 우리의 하나님이 우리를 블레셋 사람의 손에서 건져내 주시도록, 쉬지 말고 기도하여 주시기 바랍니다" 하고 간청하였다. 사무엘이 젖 먹는 어린 양을 한 마리 가져다가 주님께 온전한 번제물로 바치고, 이스라엘을 구원하여 달라고 주님께 부르짖으니, 주님께서 그의 기도를 들어 주셨다. 사무엘이 번제를 드리고 있을 때에, 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘과 싸우려고 다가왔다. 그러나 그 때에 주님께서 큰 천둥소리를 일으켜 블레셋 사람을 당황하게 하셨으므로, 그들이 이스라엘에게 패하였다.

The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Car. Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far has the LORD helped us." So the Philistines were subdued and did not invade Israelite territory again. Throughout Samuel's lifetime, the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines. The towns from Ekron to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to her, and Israel delivered the neighboring territory from the power of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites. Samuel continued as judge over Israel all the days of his life. 이스라엘 사람이 미스바에서 나와서, 블레셋 사람을 벳갈 아래까지 뒤쫓으면서 무찔렀다. 사무엘이 돌을 하나 가져다가 미스바와 센 사이에 놓고 "우리가 여기에 이르기까지 주님께서 우리를 도와 주셨다!" 하고 말하면서, 그 돌의 이름을 에벤에셀이라고 지었다. 그래서 블레셋 사람들이 무릎을 꿇고, 다시는 이스라엘 지역으로 들어오지 않았다. 사무엘이 살아 있는 동안에는 주님의 손이 블레셋 사람을 막아 주셨다. 블레셋 사람이 이스라엘에게서 빼앗아 간 성읍들 곧 에그론과 가드 사이에 있는 성읍들도 이스라엘에 되돌아왔으며, 성읍에 딸린 지역도 이스라엘이 블레셋 사람의 손에서 되찾았다. 이스라엘은 또 아모리 사람과도 평화롭게 지냈다. 사무엘은 살아 있는 동안 이스라엘을 다스렸다.

From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places. But he always went back to Ramah, where his home was, and there he also judged Israel. And he built an altar there to the LORD. 그는 해마다 베델과 길갈과 미스바 지역을 돌면서, 그 모든 곳에서 이스라엘 사람 사이의 분쟁을 중재하였다. 그리고는 자기 집이 있는 라마로 돌아와서, 거기에서도 이스라엘의 사사로 활동하였다. 그는 라마에 주님의 제단을 쌓았다.
