룻기 3장

 

One day Naomi her mother-in-law said to her, "My daughter, should I not try to find a home for you, where you will be well provided for? Is not Boaz, with whose servant girls you have been, a kinsman of ours? Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don't let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do." "I will do whatever you say," Ruth answered. 시어머니 나오미가 룻에게 말하였다. "얘야, 네가 행복하게 살 만한 안락한 가정을, 내가 찾아보아야 하겠다. 생각하여 보렴. 우리의 친족 가운데에 보아스라는 사람이 있지 아니하냐? 네가 요즈음 그 집 여자들과 함께 일하고 있다. 잘 들어 보아라. 오늘 밤에 그가 타작 마당에서 보리를 까부를 것이다. 너는 목욕을 하고, 향수를 바르고, 고운 옷으로 몸을 단장하고서, 타작 마당으로 내려가거라. 그 사람이 먹고 마시기를 마칠 때까지, 너는 그가 눈치 채지 못하도록 조심하여야 한다. 그가 잠자리에 들 때에, 너는 그가 눕는 자리를 잘 보아 두었다가, 다가가서 그의 발치를 들치고 누워라. 그러면 그가 너의 할 일을 일러줄 것이다." 룻이 시어머니에게 대답하였다. "어머님께서 일러주신 대로 다 하겠습니다."

So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do. When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down. In the middle of the night something startled the man, and he turned and discovered a woman lying at his feet. "Who are you?" he asked. "I am your servant Ruth," she said. "Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a kinsman-redeemer." "The LORD bless you, my daughter," he replied. "This kindness is greater than that which you showed earlier: You have not run after the younger men, whether rich or poor. 그는 타작 마당으로 내려가서, 시어머니가 시킨 대로 다 하였다. 보아스는 실컷 먹고 마시고 나서, 흡족한 마음으로 낟가리 곁으로 가서 누웠다. 룻이 살그머니 다가가서, 보아스의 발치를 들치고 누웠다. 한밤중이 되었을 때에, 보아스는 으시시 떨면서 돌아눕다가, 웬 여인이 자기 발치께에 누워 있는 것을 보고 깜짝 놀라면서 "누구요?" 하고 물었다. 룻이 대답하였다. "어른의 종 룻입니다. 어른의 품에 이 종을 안아 주십시오. 어른이야말로 집안 어른으로서 저를 맡아야 할 분이십니다." 보아스가 룻에게 말하였다. "이봐요, 룻, 그대는 주님께 복받을 여인이오. 가난하든 부유하든 젊은 남자를 따라감직한데, 그렇게 하지 않으니, 지금 그대가 보여 준 갸륵한 마음씨는, 이제까지 보여 준 것보다 더욱더 값진 것이오.

And now, my daughter, don't be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All my fellow townsmen know that you are a woman of noble character. Although it is true that I am near of kin, there is a kinsman-redeemer nearer than I. Stay here for the night, and in the morning if he wants to redeem, good; let him redeem. But if he is not willing, as surely as the LORD lives I will do it. Lie here until morning." So she lay at his feet until morning, but got up before anyone could be recognized; and he said, "Don't let it be known that a woman came to the threshing floor." He also said, "Bring me the shawl you are wearing and hold it out." When she did so, he poured into it six measures of barley and put it on her. Then he went back to town. 이제부터는 걱정하지 마시오, 룻. 그대가 바라는 것이라면 무엇이든지 다 들어주겠소. 그대가 정숙한 여인이라는 것은 온 마을 사람들이 다 알고 있소. 내가 집안간으로서 그대를 맡아야 할 책임이 있다는 것은 틀림없소. 하지만 그대를 맡아야 할 사람으로, 나보다 더 가까운 친족이 한 사람 있소. 오늘 밤은 여기서 지내고, 날이 밝거든 봅시다. 그가 집안간으로서 그대를 맡겠다면, 좋소. 그렇게 하도록 합시다. 그러나 그가 그렇게 하지 않겠다면, 그 때에는 내가 그대를 맡겠소. 이것은 내가, 살아 계신 주님을 두고 맹세하는 것이오. 아침까지 여기 누워 있으시오." 룻은 새벽녘까지 그의 발치에 누워 있다가, 서로 얼굴을 알아보기 어려운 이른 새벽에 일어났다. 이것은 보아스가, 그 여인이 타작 마당에 와서 있었다는 것을 남들이 알아서는 안 된다고 말하였기 때문이다. 보아스가 말하였다. "걸치고 있는 겉옷을 이리 가지고 와서, 펴서 꼭 잡으시오." 보아스는, 룻이 겉옷을 펴서 잡고 있는 동안, 보리를 여섯 번 되어서 그에게 이워 주고는 성읍으로 들어갔다.

When Ruth came to her mother-in-law, Naomi asked, "How did it go, my daughter?" Then she told her everything Boaz had done for her and added, "He gave me these six measures of barley, saying, 'Don't go back to your mother-in-law empty-handed.' " Then Naomi said, "Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today." 룻이 시어머니에게 돌아오니, 시어머니가 물었다. "얘야, 어찌 되었느냐?" 룻은 그 남자가 자기에게 한 일을 시어머니에게 낱낱이 말하고, 덧붙여서 말하였다. "여섯 번이나 되어서 준 이 보리는, 어머님께 빈 손으로 가서는 안 된다고 하면서, 바로 그가 손수 담아 준 것입니다." 그러자 시어머니가 일렀다. "얘야, 일이 어떻게 될지 확실해질 때까지, 너는 가만히 기다리고 있거라. 아마 그 사람은 지금쯤 가만히 있지 않을 거다. 이 일을 마무리 짓는 데, 오늘을 넘기지는 않을 것이다."
