사사기 7장

 

Early in the morning, Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) and all his men camped at the spring of Harod. The camp of Midian was north of them in the valley near the hill of Moreh. The LORD said to Gideon, "You have too many men for me to deliver Midian into their hands. In order that Israel may not boast against me that her own strength has saved her, announce now to the people, 'Anyone who trembles with fear may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.' " So twenty-two thousand men left, while ten thousand remained. But the LORD said to Gideon, "There are still too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will sift them for you there. If I say, 'This one shall go with you,' he shall go; but if I say, 'This one shall not go with you,' he shall not go." So Gideon took the men down to the water. There the LORD told him, "Separate those who lap the water with their tongues like a dog from those who kneel down to drink." 여룹바알이라고도 하는 기드온과 그가 거느리는 모든 군대가 일찍 일어나, 하롯이라는 샘 곁에 진을 쳤는데, 미디안의 진은 거기에서 북쪽 골짜기에 있는 모레 언덕에 있었다. 주님께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. "네가 거느린 군대의 수가 너무 많다. 이대로는 내가 미디안 사람들을 네가 거느린 군대의 손에 넘겨 주지 않겠다. 이스라엘 백성이 나를 제쳐놓고서, 제가 힘이 세어서 이긴 줄 알고 스스로 자랑할까 염려된다. 그러니 너는 이제라도 그들에게 말하여, 두려워서 떨리는 사람은 누구든지, 길르앗 산을 떠나서 돌아가게 하여라." 기드온이 두려워서 떠는 자를 돌아가게 하니, 그들 가운데서 이만 이천 명이 돌아가고 만 명이 남았다. 주님께서 또 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. "군인이 아직도 많다. 그들을 물가로 데리고 내려가거라. 내가 너를 도와 거기에서 그들을 시험하여 보겠다. 내가 너에게 '이 사람이 너와 함께 나갈 사람'이라 일러주면, 너는 그 사람을 데리고 가거라. 내가 또 너에게 '이 사람은 너와 함께 나가지 못할 사람'이라 일러주면, 너는 그 사람은 데리고 가지 말아라." 기드온이 군대를 물가로 데리고 내려가니, 주님께서 기드온에게 이렇게 일러주셨다. "개가 핥는 것처럼 혀로 물을 핥는 사람과 무릎을 꿇고 물을 마시는 사람을 모두 구별하여 세워라."

Three hundred men lapped with their hands to their mouths. All the rest got down on their knees to drink. The LORD said to Gideon, "With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the other men go, each to his own place." So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites to their tents but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others. Now the camp of Midian lay below him in the valley. During that night the LORD said to Gideon, "Get up, go down against the camp, because I am going to give it into your hands. If you are afraid to attack, go down to the camp with your servant Purah 손으로 물을 움켜 입에 대고 핥는 사람의 수가 삼백 명이었고, 그 밖의 백성들은 다 무릎을 꿇고 물을 마셨다. 주님께서 기드온에게 이르셨다. "물을 핥아먹은 삼백 명으로 너희를 구원하겠다. 미디안 사람들을 너의 손에 넘겨주겠다. 나머지 군인은 모두 온 곳으로 돌려보내라." 그래서 기드온은 물을 핥아먹은 삼백 명만 남겨 두고 나머지 이스라엘 군대는 각자의 집으로 돌려보냈다. 남은 삼백 명은 돌아가는 군인들에게서 식량과 나팔을 넘겨받았다. 미디안의 진은 그 아래 골짜기에 있었다. 그 날 밤 주님께서 기드온에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 일어나서 적진으로 쳐내려가거라. 내가 그들을 너의 손에 넘겨 주겠다. 네가 쳐내려가기가 두려우면, 너의 부하 부라와 함께 먼저 적진으로 내려가 보아라.

and listen to what they are saying. Afterward, you will be encouraged to attack the camp." So he and Purah his servant went down to the outposts of the camp. The Midianites, the Amalekites and all the other eastern peoples had settled in the valley, thick as locusts. Their camels could no more be counted than the sand on the seashore. Gideon arrived just as a man was telling a friend his dream. "I had a dream," he was saying. "A round loaf of barley bread came tumbling into the Midianite camp. It struck the tent with such force that the tent overturned and collapsed." His friend responded, "This can be nothing other than the sword of Gideon son of Joash, the Israelite. God has given the Midianites and the whole camp into his hands." When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he worshiped God. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, "Get up! The LORD has given the Midianite camp into your hands." 그리고 적들이 무슨 말을 하는지 들어보면, 네가 적진으로 쳐내려갈 용기를 얻을 것이다." 그는 자기의 부하 부라와 함께 적진의 끝으로 내려갔다. 미디안 사람과 아말렉 사람과 사막 부족들이 메뚜기 떼처럼 그 골짜기에 수없이 널려 있었으며, 그들의 낙타도 바닷가의 모래알처럼 헤아릴 수 없이 많았다. 기드온이 그 곳에 이르렀을 때에, 마침 한 병사가 자기가 꾼 꿈 이야기를 친구에게 하고 있었다. "내가 꿈을 꾸었는데, 보리빵 한 덩어리가 미디안 진으로 굴러 들어와 장막에 이르러서 그 장막을 쳐서 뒤엎으니, 그만 막이 쓰러지고 말았다네" 하고 말하니까, 꿈 이야기를 들은 그 친구가 말하였다. "그것은 다름이 아니라, 이스라엘 사람 요아스의 아들인 기드온의 칼이 틀림없네. 하나님이 미디안과 그 모든 진을 그의 손에 넘기신다는 것일세." 기드온은 그 꿈 이야기와 해몽하는 말을 듣고, 주님께 경배하였다. 그리고 그는 이스라엘 진으로 돌아와서 "일어나라! 주님께서 미디안의 진을 너희 손에 넘겨 주셨다!" 하고 외쳤다.

Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside. "Watch me," he told them. "Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, 'For the LORD and for Gideon.' " Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the edge of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just after they had changed the guard. They blew their trumpets and broke the jars that were in their hands. The three companies blew the trumpets and smashed the jars. Grasping the torches in their left hands and holding in their right hands the trumpets they were to blow, they shouted, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!" 그는 삼백 명을 세 부대로 나누고, 각 사람에게 나팔과 빈 항아리를 손에 들려 주었다. 빈 항아리 속에는 횃불을 감추었다. 그리고 이렇게 지시하였다. "너희는 나를 보고 있다가, 내가 하는 대로 하여라. 내가 적진의 끝으로 가서 하는 대로 따라 하여라. 나와 우리 부대가 함께 나팔을 불면, 너희도 적진의 사방에서 나팔을 불면서 '주님 만세! 기드온 만세!' 하고 외쳐라." 기드온과 그가 거느리는 군사 백 명이 적진의 끝에 다다른 것은, 미디안 군대의 보초가 교대를 막 끝낸 한밤중이었다. 그들은 나팔을 불며 손에 든 항아리를 깨뜨렸다. 세 부대가 모두 나팔을 불며 단지를 깨고, 왼손에는 횃불을 들고, 오른손에는 나팔을 들고 불면서 "주님의 칼이다! 기드온의 칼이다!" 하고 외쳤다.

While each man held his position around the camp, all the Midianites ran, crying out as they fled. When the three hundred trumpets sounded, the LORD caused the men throughout the camp to turn on each other with their swords. The army fled to Beth Shittah toward Zererah as far as the border of Abel Meholah near Tabbath. Israelites from Naphtali, Asher and all Manasseh were called out, and they pursued the Midianites. Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim, saying, "Come down against the Midianites and seize the waters of the Jordan ahead of them as far as Beth Barah." So all the men of Ephraim were called out and they took the waters of the Jordan as far as Beth Barah. They also captured two of the Midianite leaders, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb at the winepress of Zeeb. They pursued the Midianites and brought the heads of Oreb and Zeeb to Gideon, who was by the Jordan. 그리고 그들이 저마다 제자리에 서서 적진을 포위하니, 적군은 모두 아우성치며 달아났다. 삼백 명이 나팔을 불 때에, 주님께서 모든 적들이 저희들끼리 칼로 치게 하셨다. 적군은 도망하여, 스레라의 벳싯다와 또 답밧에 가까운 아벨므홀라의 경계선까지 후퇴하였다. 납달리 지파와 아셀 지파와 온 므낫세 지파에서 모인 이스라엘 사람들이 미디안 군대를 추격하였다. 기드온은 에브라임 산간지방 전역에 전령들을 보내어서 말하였다. "너희는 내려와서 미디안을 쳐라. 그들을 앞질러서, 벳바라와 요단 강에 이르기까지의 나루들을 점령하여라." 그러자 에브라임 사람이 모두 모여서 벳바라와 요단 강에 이르기까지의 나루들을 점령하였다. 그들이 미디안의 두 우두머리 오렙과 스엡을 사로잡아, 오렙은 오렙 바위에서 죽이고, 스엡은 스엡 포도주 틀에서 죽이고, 계속 미디안을 추격하였다. 그들이 오렙과 스엡의 머리를 요단 강 동쪽 지역에 있는 기드온에게 가져 왔다.
