신명기 29장

These are the terms of the covenant the LORD commanded Moses to make with the Israelites in Moab, in addition to the covenant he had made with them at Horeb. Moses summoned all the Israelites and said to them: Your eyes have seen all that the LORD did in Egypt to Pharaoh, to all his officials and to all his land. With your own eyes you saw those great trials, those miraculous signs and great wonders. But to this day the LORD has not given you a mind that understands or eyes that see or ears that hear. During the forty years that I led you through the desert, your clothes did not wear out, nor did the sandals on your feet. 이것은, 주님께서 호렙에서 이스라엘 자손과 세우신 언약에 덧붙여서, 모세에게 명하여, 모압 땅에서 이스라엘 자손과 세우신 언약의 말씀이다. 모세가 온 이스라엘을 불러모으고 그들에게 말하였다. You ate no bread and drank no wine or other fermented drink. I did this so that you might know that I am the LORD your God. When you reached this place, Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan came out to fight against us, but we defeated them. We took their land and gave it as an inheritance to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh. Carefully follow the terms of this covenant, so that you may prosper in everything you do. together with your children and your wives, and the aliens living in your camps who chop your wood and carry your water. You are standing here in order to enter into a covenant with the LORD your God, a covenant the LORD is making with you this day and sealing with an oath, to confirm you this day as his people, that he may be your God as he promised you and as he swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I am making this covenant, with its oath, not only with you who are standing here with us today in the presence of the LORD our God but also with those who are not here today. 곧 당신들의 어린 아이들과 아내들과 당신들의 진 가운데서 함께 사는 외국 사람과 당신들에게 장작을 패 주는 사람과, 나아가서는 물을 길어 오는 사람에 이르기까지, 주 당신들의 하나님 앞에 모두 모였습니다. 당신들은 오늘 여기에 서서, 주 당신들의 하나님이 당신들과 세우시는 그 언약에 참여하게 됩니다. 당신들은 그 언약에 들어 있는 의무를 지켜야 합니다. 주님께서 당신들에게 약속하시고, 당신들의 조상 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하신 대로, 오늘 당신들을 자기의 백성으로 삼으시고, 주님께서 몸소 당신들의 하나님이 되시려는 것입니다. 이 언약과 맹세는 주님께서 당신들하고만 세우는 것이 아닙니다. 이 언약은, 오늘 주 우리의 하나님 앞에 우리와 함께 서 있는 사람들만이 아니라, 오늘 여기 우리와 함께 있지 않은 자손과도 함께 세우는 것입니다.

You yourselves know how we lived in Egypt and how we passed through the countries on the way here. You saw among them their detestable images and idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold. Make sure there is no man or woman, clan or tribe among you today whose heart turns away from the LORD our God to go and worship the gods of those nations; make sure there is no root among you that produces such bitter poison. When such a person hears the words of this oath, he invokes a blessing on himself and therefore thinks, "I will be safe, even though I persist in going my own way." This will bring disaster on the watered land as well as the dry. The LORD will never be willing to forgive him; his wrath and zeal will burn against that man. All the curses written in this book will fall upon him, and the LORD will blot out his name from under heaven. （당신들은 우리가 이집트 땅에서 어떻게 살아왔는지, 또 여러 나라를 어떻게 지나왔는지를 기억하십시오. 당신들은 그들 가운데 있는 역겨운 것과, 나무와 돌과 은과 금으로 만든 우상을 보았습니다.） 당신들 가운데 남자나 여자나 가족이나 지파가, 주 우리 하나님으로부터 마음을 멀리하여, 다른 민족의 신들을 섬기려고 해서는 안 됩니다. 당신들 가운데 독초나 쓴 열매를 맺는 뿌리가 있어서는 안 됩니다. 그러한 사람은 이런 저주의 말을 들으면서도 속으로 자기를 달래면서 '내 고집대로 하여도 만사가 형통할 것이다' 할 것입니다. （당신들이 그런 사람을 그대로 두면, 맹렬한 재난을 만나서 파멸되고 말 것입니다.） 주님께서는 그런 사람을 용서하지 않으십니다. 주님께서는 그런 사람에게 주님의 분노와 질투의 불을 퍼부으실 뿐만 아니라, 이 책에 기록되어 있는 모든 저주를 그에게 내리게 하실 것입니다. 그리하여 주님께서는 마침내 그의 이름을 하늘 아래에서 지워 버려서, 아무도 그를 기억하지 못하게 하실 것입니다.

The LORD will single him out from all the tribes of Israel for disaster, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this Book of the Law. Your children who follow you in later generations and foreigners who come from distant lands will see the calamities that have fallen on the land and the diseases with which the LORD has afflicted it. The whole land will be a burning waste of salt and sulfur--nothing planted, nothing sprouting, no vegetation growing on it. It will be like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which the LORD overthrew in fierce anger. All the nations will ask: "Why has the LORD done this to this land? Why this fierce, burning anger?" And the answer will be: "It is because this people abandoned the covenant of the LORD, the God of their fathers, the covenant he made with them when he brought them out of Egypt. 주님께서는 그런 사람을 이스라엘의 모든 지파 가운데서 구별하여, 이 율법책의 언약에 나타나 있는 온갖 저주대로, 그들에게 재앙을 내리실 것입니다. 당신들의 뒤를 이어 태어나는 자손과 먼 나라에서 온 외국 사람들이, 주님께서 이 땅에 내리신 재앙과 질병을 보고, 또 온 땅이 유황불에 타며, 소금이 되어 아무것도 뿌리지 못하고 나지도 않으며, 아무 풀도 자라지 않아서, 주님께서 맹렬한 분노로 멸망시키신 소돔과 고모라와 아드마와 스보임과 같이 된 것을 보면서, 물을 것입니다. 모든 민족이 묻기를 '어찌하여 주님께서는 이 땅에서 이런 참혹한 일을 하셨을까? 이토록 심한 분노를 일으키신 것은 무엇 때문일까?' 할 것입니다. 그러면 사람들이 대답할 것입니다. '그들은, 주님께서 이집트 땅에서 그들의 조상을 인도하여 내실 때에, 주 조상의 하나님과 세운 언약을 버리고,

They went off and worshiped other gods and bowed down to them, gods they did not know, gods he had not given them. Therefore the LORD's anger burned against this land, so that he brought on it all the curses written in this book. In furious anger and in great wrath the LORD uprooted them from their land and thrust them into another land, as it is now." The secret things belong to the LORD our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law. 그들이 알지도 못하고 주님께서 허락하시지도 아니한 신들을 따라가서, 섬기고 절하였다. 그래서 주님께서 이 땅을 보고 진노하셔서, 이 책에 기록된 모든 저주를 내리신 것이다. 주님께서 크게 분노하시고 진노하시고 격분하셔서, 오늘과 같이 그들을 이 땅에서 송두리째 뽑아다가 다른 나라로 보내 버리신 것이다.' 이 세상에는 주 우리의 하나님이 숨기시기 때문에 알 수 없는 일도 많습니다. 그것은 주님의 것입니다. 그러나 하나님은 그의 뜻이 담긴 율법을 밝히 나타내 주셨으니, 이것은 우리의 것입니다. 우리와 우리의 자손은 길이길이 이 율법의 모든 말씀에 순종해야 합니다."
