신명기 9장

Hear, O Israel. You are now about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, with large cities that have walls up to the sky. The people are strong and tall--Anakites! You know about them and have heard it said: "Who can stand up against the Anakites?" But be assured today that the LORD your God is the one who goes across ahead of you like a devouring fire. He will destroy them; he will subdue them before you. And you will drive them out and annihilate them quickly, as the LORD has promised you. After the LORD your God has driven them out before you, do not say to yourself, "The LORD has brought me here to take possession of this land because of my righteousness." No, it is on account of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD is going to drive them out before you. It is not because of your righteousness or your integrity that you are going in to take possession of their land; but on account of the wickedness of these nations, the LORD your God will drive them out before you, to accomplish what he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. "이스라엘은 들으십시오. 오늘 당신들이 요단 강을 건너가서, 당신들보다 강대한 민족들을 쫓아내고, 하늘에 닿을 듯이 높은 성벽으로 둘러싸인 큰 성읍들을 차지할 것입니다. 거기에 있는 사람들, 힘이 세고 키가 큰 이 민족은, 당신들이 아는 그 아낙 자손입니다. '누가 아낙 자손과 맞설 수 있겠느냐?' 하는 말을 당신들은 들었을 것입니다. 그러나 당신들이 아시는 대로, 오늘 주 당신들의 하나님이 맹렬한 불이 되어 당신들 앞에서 건너가시며, 몸소 당신들 앞에서 그들을 멸하셔서, 그들이 당신들 앞에 무릎을 꿇게 하실 것입니다. 주님께서 당신들에게 말씀하신 대로, 그들을 빨리 몰아내고 멸망시키실 것입니다. 주 당신들의 하나님이 그들을 당신들 앞에서 내쫓으신 다음에, 행여 '내가 착하기 때문에 주님께서 나를 이끌어들여 이 땅을 차지하게 하셨다'고 생각하지 마십시오. 주님께서 이 민족을 당신들 앞에서 내쫓은 것은, 그들이 악하기 때문입니다. 당신들이 마음이 착하고 바르기 때문에 당신들이 들어가서 그들의 땅을 차지하도록 하신 것이 아니라, 여기에 있는 이 민족들이 악하기 때문에 주 당신들의 하나님이 그들을 당신들 앞에서 내쫓으신 것입니다. 이렇게 하여, 주님께서는 당신들의 조상 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱에게 맹세하신 그 말씀을 이루신 것입니다.

Understand, then, that it is not because of your righteousness that the LORD your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stiff-necked people. Remember this and never forget how you provoked the LORD your God to anger in the desert. From the day you left Egypt until you arrived here, you have been rebellious against the LORD. At Horeb you aroused the LORD's wrath so that he was angry enough to destroy you. When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets of stone, the tablets of the covenant that the LORD had made with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water. The LORD gave me two stone tablets inscribed by the finger of God. on them were all the commandments the LORD proclaimed to you on the mountain out of the fire, on the day of the assembly. 주 당신들의 하나님이 이 좋은 땅을 당신들에게 주어 유산으로 차지하게 하신 것이, 당신들이 착하기 때문이 아님을, 당신들은 알아야 합니다. 오히려 당신들은 고집이 센 백성입니다. 당신들은 광야에서 주 당신들의 하나님을 얼마나 노엽게 하였던가를 잊지 말고 기억하십시오. 당신들은 이집트 땅에서 나오던 날부터 이 곳에 이르기까지 줄곧 주님을 거역하였습니다. 당신들은 이미 호렙 산에서 주님을 노엽게 하였으며, 그래서 주님께서는 진노하셔서, 당신들을 멸하려고 하셨습니다. 그 때에 나는 돌판 곧 주님께서 당신들과 세우신 언약을 쓴 돌판을 받으려고 산에 올라가, 그 산에서 밤낮 사십 일을 살면서, 밥도 먹지 않고 물도 마시지 않았습니다. 그 때에 주 하나님이 돌판 둘을 나에게 주셨는데, 그 돌판의 글은 하나님이 손수 쓰신 것입니다. 그 두 돌판에는 당신들 총회 날에 주님께서 그 산꼭대기의 불길 속에서 당신들에게 하신 모든 말씀이 그대로 기록되어 있습니다.

At the end of the forty days and forty nights, the LORD gave me the two stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant. Then the LORD told me, "Go down from here at once, because your people whom you brought out of Egypt have become corrupt. They have turned away quickly from what I commanded them and have made a cast idol for themselves." And the LORD said to me, "I have seen this people, and they are a stiff-necked people indeed! Let me alone, so that I may destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven. And I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than they." So I turned and went down from the mountain while it was ablaze with fire. And the two tablets of the covenant were in my hands. 밤낮 사십 일이 지난 다음에, 주님께서는 나에게 두 돌판 곧 언약의 돌판을 주셨습니다. 그리고 주님께서는 나에게 이르시기를 '일어나서 여기에서 빨리 내려가거라. 이집트에서 이끌어 낸 너의 백성이 타락하여, 내가 명한 길에서 이미 떠났으며, 자기들이 섬길 우상을 만들었다' 하셨습니다. 주님께서 또 나에게 말씀하시기를 '이 백성을 보니, 정말 고집이 센 백성이구나. 나를 말리지 말아라. 내가 그들을 멸하여, 하늘 아래에서 그들의 이름을 없애버리겠다. 그 대신에 내가 그들보다 강한 많은 민족을 너에게서 나오게 하겠다' 하셨습니다. 내가 발길을 돌려서 산에서 내려오는데, 산에는 불이 타고 있었고, 나는 두 손으로 두 언약 돌판을 들고 있었습니다.

When I looked, I saw that you had sinned against the LORD your God; you had made for yourselves an idol cast in the shape of a calf. You had turned aside quickly from the way that the LORD had commanded you. So I took the two tablets and threw them out of my hands, breaking them to pieces before your eyes. Then once again I fell prostrate before the LORD for forty days and forty nights; I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all the sin you had committed, doing what was evil in the LORD's sight and so provoking him to anger. I feared the anger and wrath of the LORD, for he was angry enough with you to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me. And the LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him, but at that time I prayed for Aaron too. 그 때에 내가 보니, 당신들이 주 당신들의 하나님께 죄를 짓고, 당신들이 섬길 송아지 우상을 만들어서, 주님께서 당신들에게 명한 길에서 이미 떠나 있었습니다. 그래서 내가, 당신들이 보는 앞에서, 두 돌판을 두 손으로 번쩍 들어 내던져 깨뜨려 버렸습니다. 그리고 내가 전과 같이 밤낮 사십 일을 밥도 먹지 않고 물도 마시지 않고 주님 앞에 엎드려 있어야만 한 것은, 당신들이 주님 보시기에 나쁜 일을 저질러서 그를 노엽게 하는 온갖 죄를 지었기 때문입니다. 주님께서 당신들을 두고 크게 분노하셔서 당신들을 죽이려고 하셨으므로, 나는 두려웠습니다. 그러나 주님께서는 다시 한 번 나의 애원을 들어주셨습니다. 주님께서 아론에게도 몹시 분노하셔서 그를 죽이려고 하셨으므로, 그 때에도 나는 아론을 살려 달라고 기도하였습니다.

Also I took that sinful thing of yours, the calf you had made, and burned it in the fire. Then I crushed it and ground it to powder as fine as dust and threw the dust into a stream that flowed down the mountain. You also made the LORD angry at Taberah, at Massah and at Kibroth Hattaavah. And when the LORD sent you out from Kadesh Barnea, he said, "Go up and take possession of the land I have given you." But you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not trust him or obey him. You have been rebellious against the LORD ever since I have known you. I lay prostrate before the LORD those forty days and forty nights because the LORD had said he would destroy you. 당신들이 지은 죄 곧 당신들이 만든 그 금송아지를 불에 넣어 녹여서 산산이 부수고, 먼지 같은 가루로 만들어서, 산에서 흘러 내려오는 개울물에 띄워 보냈습니다. 당신들은 다베라와 맛사와 기브롯핫다아와에서도 주님을 노엽게 하였습니다. 주님께서 당신들을 가데스바네아로 보내실 때에, 당신들에게 이르시기를 '올라가서 내가 너희에게 준 땅을 차지하여라' 하셨습니다. 그러나 당신들은 주 당신들의 하나님의 명령을 거역하고, 그를 믿지 않고 그의 말씀을 듣지 않았습니다. 내가 당신들을 알게 된 날부터 지금까지, 당신들은 주님을 거역하기만 하였습니다. 그 때에 주님께서 당신들을 멸하시겠다고 하셨으므로, 나는 주님 앞에 여전히 밤낮 사십 일을 엎드려 있으면서,

I prayed to the LORD and said, "O Sovereign LORD, do not destroy your people, your own inheritance that you redeemed by your great power and brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand. Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Overlook the stubbornness of this people, their wickedness and their sin. Otherwise, the country from which you brought us will say, 'Because the LORD was not able to take them into the land he had promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to put them to death in the desert.' But they are your people, your inheritance that you brought out by your great power and your outstretched arm." 주님께 기도하여 아뢰었습니다. '주 나의 하나님, 주님께서 이 백성을 강한 손으로 이집트에서 인도하여 내시고, 주님의 그 크신 힘으로 속량하셨으니, 주님의 소유인 이 백성을 멸하지 말아 주십시오. 주님의 종 아브라함과 이삭과 야곱을 생각하셔서라도, 이 백성의 고집과 악과 죄를 보지 말아 주십시오. 그렇게 하지 않으시면, 주님께서 아직 우리를 이끌어 내지 않으셨을 때에 우리가 살던 그 땅의 백성이 말하기를, 그들의 주가 자기 백성에게 주기로 약속한 땅으로 그들을 데리고 갈 능력이 없다 하거나, 그들의 주가 자기 백성을 미워하셔서 그들을 광야에서 죽이려고 이끌어 내셨다 할까 두렵습니다. 이 백성은 주님께서 그 크신 힘과 펴신 팔로 인도하여 내신 주님의 소유요 주님의 백성입니다.'"
