Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, and certain Reubenites--Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and on son of Peleth--became insolent and rose up against Moses. With them were 250 Israelite men, well-known community leaders who had been appointed members of the council. They came as a group to oppose Moses and Aaron and said to them, "You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?" When Moses heard this, he fell facedown. Then he said to Korah and all his followers: "In the morning the LORD will show who belongs to him and who is holy, and he will have that person come near him. You, Korah, and all your followers are to do this: Take censers and tomorrow put fire and incense in them before the LORD. The man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. You Levites have gone too far!" Moses also said to Korah, "Now listen, you Levites! Isn't it enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the Israelite community and brought you near himself to do the work at the LORD's tabernacle and to stand before the community and minister to them? "당신들 레위의 자손은 들으시오. 이스라엘의 하나님이 당신들을 이스라엘 회중 가운데서 구별하셔서, 주님께로 가까이 나오게 하셨소. 그리고 주님의 성막 일을 하게 하셨소. 그뿐만 아니라, 당신들을 회중 앞에 세워, 그들을 돌보게 하셨소. 그런데 이것이 당신들에게 부족하단 말이오? 주님께서는 당신의 모든 동료 레위의 자손을 당신과 함께 주님께로 가까이 불러 내셨소. 그런데 이제 당신들은 제사장직까지도 요구하고 있소.

It is against the LORD that you and all your followers have banded together. Who is Aaron that you should grumble against him?" Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab. But they said, "We will not come! Isn't it enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the desert? And now you also want to lord it over us? Moreover, you haven't brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!" Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, "Do not accept their offering. I have not taken so much as a donkey from them, nor have I wronged any of them." 그러므로 당신과 당신의 사람들이 결속한 것은, 주님을 거역하는 것이오. 아론이 어떤 사람인데, 감히 그를 거역하여 불평을 한단 말이오?" 모세는 또 사람을 시켜, 엘리압의 아들 다단과 아비람을 불렀다. 그러나 그들은 이렇게 말하였다. "저 사람들이 바치는 제물은 바라보지도 마십시오. 저는 저 사람들에게서 나귀 한 마리도 빼앗은 일이 없습니다. 저들 가운데 어느 한 사람에게도 잘못한 일이 없습니다."

Moses said to Korah, "You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow--you and they and Aaron. Each man is to take his censer and put incense in it--250 censers in all--and present it before the LORD. You and Aaron are to present your censers also." So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting. When Korah had gathered all his followers in opposition to them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the entire assembly. The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, 모세가 고라에게 말하였다. "Separate yourselves from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and cried out, "O God, God of the spirits of all mankind, will you be angry with the entire assembly when only one man sins?" Then the LORD said to Moses, "Say to the assembly, 'Move away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.' " Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him. "너희는 이 회중에게서 따로 떨어져라. 내가 그들을 순식간에 없애 버리겠다." 그러나 모세와 아론이 땅에 엎드려 부르짖었다. "하나님, 모든 육체에 숨을 불어넣어 주시는 하나님, 죄는 한 사람이 지었는데, 어찌 온 회중에게 진노하십니까?" 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 회중에게 고라와 다단과 아비람의 거처 가까이에서 떠나라고 하여라." 모세가 일어나 다단과 아비람에게로 가니, 이스라엘 장로들도 그를 따랐다.

He warned the assembly, "Move back from the tents of these wicked men! Do not touch anything belonging to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins." So they moved away from the tents of Korah, Dathan and Abiram. Dathan and Abiram had come out and were standing with their wives, children and little ones at the entrances to their tents. Then Moses said, "This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things and that it was not my idea: If these men die a natural death and experience only what usually happens to men, then the LORD has not sent me. But if the LORD brings about something totally new, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them, with everything that belongs to them, and they go down alive into the grave, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt." 그는 회중에게 경고하였다. "당신들은 이 악한 사람들의 장막에서 물러서시오! 그들에게 딸린 어느 것 하나도 건드리지 마시오. 건드렸다가는, 그들의 죄에 휘말려 함께 망할 것이오." 그러자 회중은 고라와 다단과 아비람의 거처 주변에서 물러섰다. 다단과 아비람은 밖으로 나와서, 그들의 장막 어귀에 섰다. 그들의 아내와 아이들과 어린 것들도 함께 섰다. 그 때에 모세가 말하였다. "당신들은 이제 곧 이 모든 일이 내 뜻대로 된 것이 아니라, 이 모든 일을 하도록 주님께서 나를 보내셔서 된 일임을 알게 될 것이오. 이 사람들이 보통 사람이 죽는 것과 같이 죽는다면, 곧 모든 사람이 겪는 것과 같은 죽음으로 죽는다면, 주님께서 나를 보내신 것이 아니오. 그러나 주님께서, 당신들이 듣도 보도 못한 일을 일으켜서, 땅이 그 입을 벌려, 그들과 그들에게 딸린 모든 것을 삼켜, 그들이 산 채로 스올로 내려가게 되면, 그 때에 당신들은 이 사람들이 주님을 업신여겨서 벌을 받았다는 것을 알게 될 것이오."

As soon as he finished saying all this, the ground under them split apart and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, with their households and all Korah's men and all their possessions. They went down alive into the grave, with everything they owned; the earth closed over them, and they perished and were gone from the community. At their cries, all the Israelites around them fled, shouting, "The earth is going to swallow us too!" The LORD said to Moses, "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron, the priest, to take the censers out of the smoldering remains and scatter the coals some distance away, for the censers are holy- the censers of the men who sinned at the cost of their lives. Hammer the censers into sheets to overlay the altar, for they were presented before the LORD and have become holy. Let them be a sign to the Israelites." So Eleazar the priest collected the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar, as the LORD directed him through Moses. This was to remind the Israelites that no one except a descendant of Aaron should come to burn incense before the LORD, or he would become like Korah and his followers. 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "너는 제사장 아론의 아들 엘르아살에게 일러서, 불 탄 자리에서 향로들을 모으게 하고, 타다 남은 불은 다른 곳에 쏟게 하여라. 이 향로들은 아무나 만져서는 안 된다. 그 향로를 가지고 있던 사람들은 죄를 짓고 목숨을 잃었지만, 그 향로는 그들이 주 앞에 드렸던 것으로, 이미 거룩하게 된 것인 만큼, 향로를 망치로 두들겨 펴서 제단에 씌우도록 하여라. 이스라엘 자손에게 이것이 경고가 될 것이다." 제사장 엘르아살이, 불에 타 죽은 사람들이 주님께 드렸던 그 놋향로들을 거두어다가, 망치로 두들겨 펴서 제단 위에 씌웠다. 엘르아살은, 주님께서 모세를 시켜 말씀하신 대로 다 하였다. 그가 이렇게 한 것은, 아론 자손이 아닌 다른 사람들은, 어느 누구도 절대로 주 앞에 가까이 가서 분향할 수 없다는 것과, 누구든지 그렇게 하였다가는 고라와 그와 합세하였던 사람들처럼 된다는 것을, 이스라엘 자손에게 상기시키려 한 것이다.

The next day the whole Israelite community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. "You have killed the LORD's people," they said. But when the assembly gathered in opposition to Moses and Aaron and turned toward the Tent of Meeting, suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared. Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting, and the LORD said to Moses, "Get away from this assembly so I can put an end to them at once." And they fell facedown. 이튿날, 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중이 모세와 아론에게 항거하면서 말하였다. "당신들이 주님의 백성을 죽였소." 온 회중이 모세와 아론을 규탄할 때에, 모세와 아론이 회막 쪽을 바라보니, 회막에 갑자기 구름이 덮이고, 주님의 영광이 거기에 나타났다. 모세와 아론이 회막 앞으로 가니, 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "너희 두 사람은 이 회중에게서 떠나라. 그들을 내가 순식간에 없애 버리겠다." 이 말을 듣고, 두 사람이 땅에 엎드렸다.

Then Moses said to Aaron, "Take your censer and put incense in it, along with fire from the altar, and hurry to the assembly to make atonement for them. Wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has started." So Aaron did as Moses said, and ran into the midst of the assembly. The plague had already started among the people, but Aaron offered the incense and made atonement for them. He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped. But 14,700 people died from the plague, in addition to those who had died because of Korah. Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, for the plague had stopped. 모세가 아론에게 말하였다. "형님께서는, 향로에 제단 불을 담고, 그 위에 향을 피워, 빨리 회중에게로 가서, 그들을 위하여 속죄의 예식을 베푸십시오. 주님께서 진노하셔서, 재앙이 시작되었습니다." 아론이 모세의 말을 듣고, 향로를 가지고 회중에게로 달려갔다. 백성 사이에는 이미 염병이 번지고 있었다. 아론이 백성에게 속죄의 예식을 베풀었다. 아론이 살아 있는 사람과 죽은 사람 사이에 서니, 재앙이 그쳤다. 이 염병으로 죽은 사람이 만 사천칠백 명이나 되었다. 이것은 고라의 일로 죽은 사람 수는 뺀 것이다. 재앙이 그치자, 아론은 회막 어귀에 있는 모세에게로 돌아왔다.
