민수기 14장

That night all the people of the community raised their voices and wept aloud. All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert! Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be better for us to go back to Egypt?" And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt." Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite assembly gathered there. 온 회중이 소리 높여 아우성쳤다. 백성이 밤새도록 통곡하였다. 온 이스라엘 자손이 모세와 아론을 원망하였다. 온 회중이 그들에게 말하였다. "차라리 우리가 이집트 땅에서 죽었더라면 더 좋았을 것이다. 아니면 차라리 우리가 이 광야에서라도 죽었더라면 더 좋았을 것이다. 그런데 주님은 왜 우리를 이 땅으로 끌고 와서, 칼에 맞아 죽게 하는가? 왜 우리의 아내들과 자식들을 사로잡히게 하는가? 차라리 이집트로 돌아가는 것이 좋겠다!" 그들은 또 서로 말하였다. "우두머리를 세우자. 그리고 이집트로 돌아가자." 모세와 아론은 이스라엘 자손의 온 회중 앞에서 얼굴을 땅에 대고 엎드렸다.

Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, who were among those who had explored the land, tore their clothes and said to the entire Israelite assembly, "The land we passed through and explored is exceedingly good. If the LORD is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. Only do not rebel against the LORD. And do not be afraid of the people of the land, because we will swallow them up. Their protection is gone, but the LORD is with us. Do not be afraid of them." But the whole assembly talked about stoning them. Then the glory of the LORD appeared at the Tent of Meeting to all the Israelites. 그러자 그 땅을 탐지하고 돌아온 이들 가운데서, 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙이 슬픔에 겨워 자신들의 옷을 찢으며, 이스라엘 자손 온 회중에게 말하였다. "우리가 탐지하려고 두루 다녀 본 그 땅은 매우 좋은 땅입니다. 주님께서 우리를 사랑하신다면, 그 땅으로 우리를 인도하실 것입니다. 젖과 꿀이 흐르는 그 땅을 우리에게 주실 것입니다. 다만 여러분은 주님을 거역하지만 마십시오. 여러분은 그 땅 백성을 두려워하지 마십시오. 그들은 우리의 밥입니다. 그들의 방어력은 사라졌습니다. 주님께서 우리와 함께 계시니, 그들을 두려워하지 마십시오." 그러나 온 회중은 그들을 돌로 쳐죽이려고 하였다. 그 때에 주님의 영광이 회막에서 온 이스라엘 자손에게 나타났다.

The LORD said to Moses, "How long will these people treat me with contempt? How long will they refuse to believe in me, in spite of all the miraculous signs I have performed among them? I will strike them down with a plague and destroy them, but I will make you into a nation greater and stronger than they." Moses said to the LORD, "Then the Egyptians will hear about it! By your power you brought these people up from among them. And they will tell the inhabitants of this land about it. They have already heard that you, O LORD, are with these people and that you, O LORD, have been seen face to face, that your cloud stays over them, and that you go before them in a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. If you put these people to death all at one time, the nations who have heard this report about you will say, 주님께서 모세에게 말씀하셨다. "언제까지 이 백성이 나를 멸시할 것이라더냐? 내가 이 백성 가운데서 보인 온갖 표적들이 있는데, 언제까지 나를 믿지 않겠다더냐? 내가 전염병으로 이들을 쳐서 없애고, 너를 이들보다 더 크고 힘센 나라가 되게 하겠다." 모세가 주님께 말씀드렸다. "이집트 사람이 들으면 어떻게 합니까? 주님께서는 이미 주님의 능력으로 이 백성을 이집트 사람 가운데서 이끌어 내셨습니다. 이집트 사람이 이 땅에 사는 사람들에게 말하면, 어떻게 합니까? 이 땅에 사는 사람들은, 주 하나님이 이 백성 가운데 계시다는 것과, 주 하나님이 얼굴과 얼굴을 마주하여 보이셨다는 것과, 주님의 구름이 그들 위에 머물고, 주님께서 낮에는 구름기둥 가운데 계시고, 밤에는 불기둥 가운데 계셔서, 그들 맨 앞에서 걸어가신다는 것을 이미 들었습니다. 그런데 이제 주님께서 이 백성을 한 사람을 처리하듯 단번에 죽이시면, 주님께서 하신 일을 들은 나라들은

'The LORD was not able to bring these people into the land he promised them on oath; so he slaughtered them in the desert.' "Now may the Lord's strength be displayed, just as you have declared: 'The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.' In accordance with your great love, forgive the sin of these people, just as you have pardoned them from the time they left Egypt until now." The LORD replied, "I have forgiven them, as you asked. '그들의 주가 자기 백성에게 주기로 맹세한 땅으로 그들을 데리고 갈 능력이 없어서, 그들을 광야에서 죽였다' 하고 말할 것입니다. 그러니 이제 주님께서는, 이미 말씀하신 대로, 주님의 권능을 나타내 보이시기 바랍니다. "너의 말대로 용서하겠다.

Nevertheless, as surely as I live and as surely as the glory of the LORD fills the whole earth, not one of the men who saw my glory and the miraculous signs I performed in Egypt and in the desert but who disobeyed me and tested me ten times- not one of them will ever see the land I promised on oath to their forefathers. No one who has treated me with contempt will ever see it. But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it. Since the Amalekites and Canaanites are living in the valleys, turn back tomorrow and set out toward the desert along the route to the Red Sea. The LORD said to Moses and Aaron: "How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites. So tell them, 'As surely as I live, declares the LORD, I will do to you the very things I heard you say: In this desert your bodies will fall--every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me. Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 주님께서 모세와 아론에게 말씀하셨다. "나를 원망하는 이 악한 회중이 언제까지 그럴 것이냐? 나를 원망하는 이스라엘 자손의 원망을 내가 들었다. 너는 그들에게 이렇게 말하여라. 나 주의 말이다. 내가 나의 삶을 두고 맹세한다. 너희가 나의 귀에 들리도록 말한 그대로, 내가 반드시 너희에게 하겠다. 너희 가운데 스무 살이 넘은 사람으로, 인구조사를 받은 모든 사람들, 곧 나를 원망한 사람들은, 이 광야에서 시체가 되어 뒹굴게 될 것이다. 나는 너희에게 땅을 주어 살게 하겠다고, 손을 들어 맹세하였다. 그러나 이제 너희는 그 땅으로 들어가지 못할 것이다. 다만 여분네의 아들 갈렙과 눈의 아들 여호수아만이 들어갈 것이다.

As for your children that you said would be taken as plunder, I will bring them in to enjoy the land you have rejected. But you--your bodies will fall in this desert. Your children will be shepherds here for forty years, suffering for your unfaithfulness, until the last of your bodies lies in the desert. For forty years--one year for each of the forty days you explored the land--you will suffer for your sins and know what it is like to have me against you.' I, the LORD, have spoken, and I will surely do these things to this whole wicked community, which has banded together against me. They will meet their end in this desert; here they will die." 너희가, 사로잡혀 갈 것이라고 걱정한 너희의 어린 것들은, 내가 이끌고 너희가 거절한 그 땅으로 들어가겠다. 그 땅이 그들의 고향이 될 것이다. 그러나 너희는 이 광야에서 시체가 되어 뒹굴 것이다. 너희 자식들은 사십 년 동안 광야에서 양을 치면서, 너희의 시체가 썩어 없어질 때까지, 너희가 저지른 죄를 대신 짊어질 것이다. 너희가 그 땅을 사십 일 동안 탐지하였으니, 그 날 수대로 하루를 일 년으로 쳐서, 너희는 사십 년 동안 너희의 죄의 짐을 져야 한다. 그제서야 너희는 내가 너희를 싫어하면 너희가 어떻게 되는지를 알게 될 것이다. 나 주가 말한다. 한데 어울려 나를 거역한, 이 악한 온 회중에게, 내가 말한 대로 반드시 하고야 말겠다. 그들은 이 광야에서 종말을 맞이할 것이다. 그들은 여기서 죽는다!"

So the men Moses had sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole community grumble against him by spreading a bad report about it- these men responsible for spreading the bad report about the land were struck down and died of a plague before the LORD. Of the men who went to explore the land, only Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh survived. When Moses reported this to all the Israelites, they mourned bitterly. Early the next morning they went up toward the high hill country. "We have sinned," they said. "We will go up to the place the LORD promised." 모세가 그 땅을 탐지하라고 보냈던 사람들은 돌아와서, 그 땅에 대하여 나쁜 소문을 퍼뜨리면서, 온 회중을 선동하여, 모세를 원망하게 하였다. 그 땅에 대하여 나쁜 소문을 퍼뜨린 사람들은, 주님 앞에서 재앙을 받아 죽었다. 그 땅을 탐지하러 갔던 사람들 가운데서, 다만 눈의 아들 여호수아와 여분네의 아들 갈렙만이 살아 남았다. 모세가, 주님께서 하신 말씀을 온 이스라엘 자손에게 일러주니, 백성들은 매우 슬퍼하였다. 다음날, 그들은 일찍 일어나 산꼭대기로 올라가면서 외쳤다. "주님께서 말씀하신 그 곳으로 올라가자. 우리가 잘못했다."

But Moses said, "Why are you disobeying the LORD's command? This will not succeed! Do not go up, because the LORD is not with you. You will be defeated by your enemies, for the Amalekites and Canaanites will face you there. Because you have turned away from the LORD, he will not be with you and you will fall by the sword." Nevertheless, in their presumption they went up toward the high hill country, though neither Moses nor the ark of the LORD's covenant moved from the camp. Then the Amalekites and Canaanites who lived in that hill country came down and attacked them and beat them down all the way to Hormah. 그러나 모세는 말렸다.
