예레미아 애가 4장

 

How the gold has lost its luster, the fine gold become dull! The sacred gems are scattered at the head of every street. How the precious sons of Zion, once worth their weight in gold, are now considered as pots of clay, the work of a potter's hands! Even jackals offer their breasts to nurse their young, but my people have become heartless like ostriches in the desert. Because of thirst the infant's tongue sticks to the roof of its mouth; the children beg for bread, but no one gives it to them. Those who once ate delicacies are destitute in the streets. Those nurtured in purple now lie on ash heaps. 아, 슬프다. 어찌하여 금이 빛을 잃고, 어찌하여 순금이 변하고, 성전 돌들이 거리 어귀마다 흩어졌는가? 순금만큼이나 고귀한 시온의 아들들이, 어찌하여 토기장이들이 빚은 질그릇 정도로나 여김을 받는가? 들개들도 제 새끼에게 젖을 물려 빨리는데, 내 백성의 도성은 사막의 타조처럼 잔인하기만 하구나. 젖먹이들이 목말라서 혀가 입천장에 붙고, 어린 것들이 먹을 것을 달라고 하여도 한 술 떠주는 이가 없구나. 지난 날 맛있는 음식을 즐기던 이들이 이제 길거리에서 처량하게 되고, 지난 날 색동 옷을 입고 자라던 이들이 이제 거름 더미에 뒹구는구나.

The punishment of my people is greater than that of Sodom, which was overthrown in a moment without a hand turned to help her. Their princes were brighter than snow and whiter than milk, their bodies more ruddy than rubies, their appearance like sapphires. But now they are blacker than soot; they are not recognized in the streets. Their skin has shriveled on their bones; it has become as dry as a stick. Those killed by the sword are better off than those who die of famine; racked with hunger, they waste away for lack of food from the field. With their own hands compassionate women have cooked their own children, who became their food when my people were destroyed. 예전에는 저 소돔 성이 사람이 손을 대지 않아도 순식간에 무너지더니, 내 백성의 도성이 지은 죄가 소돔이 지은 죄보다 크구나. 예전에는 귀하신 몸들이 눈보다 깨끗하며 우유보다 희고, 그 몸이 산호보다 붉고, 그 모습이 청옥과 같더니, 이제 그들의 얼굴이 숯보다 더 검고, 살갗과 뼈가 맞붙어서 막대기처럼 말랐으니, 거리에서 그들을 알아보는 이가 없구나. 굶어 죽은 사람보다는 차라리, 칼에 죽은 사람이 낫겠다. 다쳐서 죽은 사람이, 먹거리가 없어서 서서히 굶어 죽어가는 사람보다 더 낫겠다. 내 백성의 도성이 망할 때에, 자애로운 어머니들이 제 손으로 자식들을 삶아서 먹었다.

The LORD has given full vent to his wrath; he has poured out his fierce anger. He kindled a fire in Zion that consumed her foundations. The kings of the earth did not believe, nor did any of the world's people, that enemies and foes could enter the gates of Jerusalem. But it happened because of the sins of her prophets and the iniquities of her priests, who shed within her the blood of the righteous. Now they grope through the streets like men who are blind. They are so defiled with blood that no one dares to touch their garments. "Go away! You are unclean!" men cry to them. "Away! Away! Don't touch us!" When they flee and wander about, people among the nations say, "They can stay here no longer." 주님께서 진노하셔서, 타오르는 분노를 퍼부으셨다. 시온에 불을 지르고, 그 터를 사르셨다. 예루살렘 성문으로 대적과 원수가 쳐들어갈 것이라고, 세상의 어느 왕이, 세상의 어느 민족이 믿었는가! 그러나 이런 일이 일어나고 말았으니, 이것은 예언자들이 죄를 짓고 제사장들이 악한 일을 하여서, 성 안에서 의로운 사람들이 살해되었기 때문이다. 지도자들이 맹인들처럼 거리를 헤매지만, 피로 부정을 탄 몸이라서 아무도 그들의 옷자락을 만지지 않는다. 사람들이 그들을 보고, "비켜라, 더럽다! 비켜라, 비켜! 물러서라!" 하고 소리친다. "그들은 가 버렸다. 그들은 떠돌이가 되어야 한다. 뭇 민족 가운데서, 다시는 안주할 곳을 찾지 못할 것이다" 하고 말한다.

The LORD himself has scattered them; he no longer watches over them. The priests are shown no honor, the elders no favor. Moreover, our eyes failed, looking in vain for help; from our towers we watched for a nation that could not save us. Men stalked us at every step, so we could not walk in our streets. Our end was near, our days were numbered, for our end had come. Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they chased us over the mountains and lay in wait for us in the desert. The LORD's anointed, our very life breath, was caught in their traps. We thought that under his shadow we would live among the nations. 주님께서 진노하셔서, 그들을 흩으시고 돌보아 주지 않으신다. 침략자들은 제사장들을 대우하지도 않고, 장로들을 대접하지도 않았다. 우리를 도와줄 사람을, 우리가 눈이 빠지도록 기다렸으나, 허사였다. 우리를 구하여 주지도 못할 나라를, 우리는 헛되이 바라보고만 있었다. 가는 곳마다 침략자들이 우리를 엿보니, 나다닐 수가 없었다. 우리의 끝이 가까이 왔고, 우리의 날이 다하였고, 우리의 마지막이 이르렀다. 우리를 쫓는 자들은 하늘의 독수리보다도 빨라, 산 속까지 우리를 쫓아오며, 사막에 숨어서 우리를 노린다. 우리의 힘, 곧 주님께서 기름 부어 세우신 이가 그들의 함정에 빠졌다. 그는 바로, "뭇 민족 가운데서, 우리가 그의 보호를 받으며 살 것이다" 하고 우리가 말한 사람이 아니던가!

Rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom, you who live in the land of Uz. But to you also the cup will be passed; you will be drunk and stripped naked. O Daughter of Zion, your punishment will end; he will not prolong your exile. But, O Daughter of Edom, he will punish your sin and expose your wickedness. 우스 땅에 사는 딸 에돔아, 기뻐하며 즐거워 할테면 하려무나. 이제 네게도 잔이 내릴 것이니, 너도 별 수 없이 취하여 벌거벗을 것이다. 도성 시온아, 이제 네가 지은 죄의 형벌을 다 받았으니, 주님께서 다시는, 네가 사로잡혀 가지 않게 하실 것이다. 에돔의 도성아, 주님께서 네 죄악을 벌하시며, 네 죄를 밝혀 내실 것이다.
