열왕기하 7장

 

Elisha said, "Hear the word of the LORD. This is what the LORD says: About this time tomorrow, a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria." The officer on whose arm the king was leaning said to the man of God, "Look, even if the LORD should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?" "You will see it with your own eyes," answered Elisha, "but you will not eat any of it!" Now there were four men with leprosy at the entrance of the city gate. They said to each other, "Why stay here until we die? If we say, 'We'll go into the city'-the famine is there, and we will die. And if we stay here, we will die. So let's go over to the camp of the Arameans and surrender. If they spare us, we live; if they kill us, then we die." At dusk they got up and went to the camp of the Arameans. When they reached the edge of the camp, not a man was there, 엘리사가 말하였다. "주님의 말씀을 들으십시오. 주님께서 이렇게 말씀하시었습니다. '내일 이맘때 쯤에 사마리아 성문 어귀에서 고운 밀가루 한 스아를 한 세겔에 사고, 보리 두 스아를 한 세겔에 살 수 있을 것이다' 하셨습니다." 그러자 왕을 부축하고 있던 시종무관이 하나님의 사람에게 대답하였다. "비록 주님께서 하늘에 있는 창고 문을 여신다고 할지라도, 어찌 그런 일이 일어날 수 있겠습니까?" 엘리사가 말하였다. "당신은 분명히 그런 일이 생기는 것을 눈으로 직접 볼 것이오. 그렇지만 당신이 그것을 먹지는 못할 것이오." 그 무렵에 나병 환자 네 사람이 성문 어귀에 있었는데, 그들이 서로 말을 주고받았다. "우리가 어찌하여 여기에 앉아서 죽기만을 기다리겠느냐? 성 안으로 들어가 봐도 성 안에는 기근이 심하니, 먹지 못하여 죽을 것이 뻔하고, 그렇다고 여기에 그대로 앉아 있어 봐도 죽을 것이 뻔하다. 그러니 차라리 시리아 사람의 진으로 들어가서 항복하자. 그래서 그들이 우리를 살려 주면 사는 것이고, 우리를 죽이면 죽는 것이다." 그리하여 그들은 황혼 무렵에 일어나서 시리아 진으로 들어갔는데, 시리아 진의 끝까지 가 보았지만, 어찌된 일인지, 그 곳에는 한 사람도 보이지 않았다.

for the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound of chariots and horses and a great army, so that they said to one another, "Look, the king of Israel has hired the Hittite and Egyptian kings to attack us!" So they got up and fled in the dusk and abandoned their tents and their horses and donkeys. They left the camp as it was and ran for their lives. The men who had leprosy reached the edge of the camp and entered one of the tents. They ate and drank, and carried away silver, gold and clothes, and went off and hid them. They returned and entered another tent and took some things from it and hid them also. Then they said to each other, "We're not doing right. This is a day of good news and we are keeping it to ourselves. If we wait until daylight, punishment will overtake us. Let's go at once and report this to the royal palace." So they went and called out to the city gatekeepers and told them, "We went into the Aramean camp and not a man was there--not a sound of anyone--only tethered horses and donkeys, and the tents left just as they were." 주님께서 시리아 진의 군인들에게, 병거 소리와 군마 소리와 큰 군대가 쳐들어오는 소리를 듣게 하셨기 때문에, 시리아 군인들은, 이스라엘 왕이 그들과 싸우려고, 헷 족속의 왕들과 이집트의 왕들을 고용하여 자기들에게 쳐들어온다고 생각하고는, 황혼녘에 일어나서, 장막과 군마와 나귀들을 모두 진에 그대로 남겨 놓은 채, 목숨을 건지려고 도망하였던 것이다. 이들 나병 환자들이 적진의 끝까지 갔다가, 한 장막 안으로 들어가서 먹고 마신 뒤에, 은과 금과 옷을 가지고 나와서 숨겨 두고는, 또 다른 장막으로 들어가서 거기에서도 물건을 가지고 나와, 그것도 역시 숨겨 두었다. 그런 다음에 그들은 서로 말하였다. "우리들이 이렇게 하는 것은 올바른 일이 아니다. 오늘은 좋은 소식을 전하는 날이다. 이것을 전하지 않고 내일 아침 해 뜰 때까지 기다린다면, 벌이 오히려 우리에게 내릴 것이다. 그러니 이제 왕궁으로 가서, 이것을 알리도록 하자." 그리하여 그들은 성으로 돌아와, 문지기들을 불러서 알려 주었다. "우리들은 지금 시리아 진에서 오는 길인데, 그 곳엔 사람은커녕 인기척도 없으며, 다만 말과 나귀만 묶여 있을 뿐, 장막도 버려진 채 그대로 있습니다."

The gatekeepers shouted the news, and it was reported within the palace. The king got up in the night and said to his officers, "I will tell you what the Arameans have done to us. They know we are starving; so they have left the camp to hide in the countryside, thinking, 'They will surely come out, and then we will take them alive and get into the city.' " One of his officers answered, "Have some men take five of the horses that are left in the city. Their plight will be like that of all the Israelites left here--yes, they will only be like all these Israelites who are doomed. So let us send them to find out what happened." So they selected two chariots with their horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army. He commanded the drivers, "Go and find out what has happened." They followed them as far as the Jordan, and they found the whole road strewn with the clothing and equipment the Arameans had thrown away in their headlong flight. So the messengers returned and reported to the king. 이 말을 들은 성문지기들은 기뻐 소리치며, 왕궁에 이 사실을 보고하였다. 왕은 밤중에 일어나서 신하들과 의논하였다. "시리아 사람들이 우리에게 이렇게 한 것이 무슨 뜻이겠소. 내 생각에는, 그들이 분명 우리가 못 먹어 허덕이는 줄 알고 진영을 비우고 들에 숨어 있다가, 우리가 성 밖으로 나오면 우리를 생포하고, 이 성 안으로 쳐들어오려고 생각한 것 같소." 그러자 신하 가운데 하나가 의견을 내놓았다. "이 성 안에 아직 남아 있는 다섯 필의 말은, 이 성 안에 남아 있는 이스라엘 모든 사람의 운명과 마찬가지로 어차피 굶어 죽고야 말 것이니, 이 말에 사람을 태워 보내어서, 정찰이나 한번 해 보시는 것이 어떻겠습니까?" 그래서 그들이 말 두 필이 끄는 병거를 끌어내니, 왕은 그들을 시리아 군의 뒤를 쫓아가도록 내보내면서, 가서 알아 보라고 하였다. 그들이 시리아 군대를 뒤따라 요단 강까지 가 보았지만, 길에는 시리아 사람들이 급히 도망치느라 던져 버린 의복과 군 장비만 가득하였다. 군인들은 돌아와서 이 사실을 왕에게 보고하였다.

Then the people went out and plundered the camp of the Arameans. So a seah of flour sold for a shekel, and two seahs of barley sold for a shekel, as the LORD had said. Now the king had put the officer on whose arm he leaned in charge of the gate, and the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died, just as the man of God had foretold when the king came down to his house. It happened as the man of God had said to the king: "About this time tomorrow, a seah of flour will sell for a shekel and two seahs of barley for a shekel at the gate of Samaria." The officer had said to the man of God, "Look, even if the LORD should open the floodgates of the heavens, could this happen?" The man of God had replied, "You will see it with your own eyes, but you will not eat any of it!" And that is exactly what happened to him, for the people trampled him in the gateway, and he died. 그러자 백성들은 밖으로 나가서 시리아 진영을 약탈하였다. 그리하여 주님의 말씀대로 고운 밀가루 한 스아를 한 세겔에, 보리 두 스아를 한 세겔에 거래할 수 있게 되었다. 그래서 왕은 자신을 부축한 그 시종무관을, 성문 관리로 임명하였다. 그러나 백성이 성문에서 그를 밟아 죽였는데, 왕이 그의 부축을 받으며 하나님의 사람을 죽이려고 왔을 때에, 하나님의 사람이 예언한 그대로 그가 죽은 것이다. 그 때에 하나님의 사람이 왕에게 말하였다. "내가, 내일 이맘때 쯤이면 사마리아 성 어귀에서는, 보리 두 스아를 한 세겔에, 고운 밀가루 한 스아를 한 세겔에 거래할 것이라고 말하였을 때에, 그 시종무관은 하나님의 사람에게 '비록 주님께서 하늘에 있는 창고 문을 여신다고 할지라도, 어찌 이런 일이 일어날 수 있겠느냐?' 하고 큰소리를 쳤습니다. 그래서 내가 말하기를 '당신은 분명히 그런 일이 생기는 것을 눈으로 직접 볼 것이오. 그렇지만 당신이 그것을 먹지는 못할 것이오' 하고 말하였습니다. 그래서 그에게 이런 일이 일어나게 된 것이며, 그가 성문 어귀에서 백성에게 짓밟혀 죽은 것입니다."
