사무엘상 24장

 

After Saul returned from pursuing the Philistines, he was told, "David is in the Desert of En Gedi." So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel and set out to look for David and his men near the Crags of the Wild Goats. He came to the sheep pens along the way; a cave was there, and Saul went in to relieve himself. David and his men were far back in the cave. The men said, "This is the day the LORD spoke of when he said to you, 'I will give your enemy into your hands for you to deal with as you wish.' " Then David crept up unnoticed and cut off a corner of Saul's robe. Afterward, David was conscience-stricken for having cut off a corner of his robe. 블레셋 사람과 싸우고 돌아온 사울은, 다윗이 엔게디 광야에 있다는 소식을 듣고, 온 이스라엘에서 삼천 명을 뽑아 거느리고, 다윗과 그의 부하들을 찾으러 '들염소 바위' 쪽으로 갔다. 사울이 길 옆에 양 우리가 많은 곳에 이르렀는데, 그 곳에 굴이 하나 있었다. 사울이 뒤를 보려고 그리로 들어갔는데, 그 굴의 안쪽 깊은 곳에 다윗과 그의 부하들이 숨어 있었다. 다윗의 부하들이 그에게 말하였다. "드디어 주님께서 대장님에게 약속하신 바로 그 날이 왔습니다. '내가 너의 원수를 너의 손에 넘겨 줄 것이니, 네가 마음대로 그를 처치하여라' 하신 바로 그 날이 되었습니다." 다윗이 일어나서 사울의 겉옷자락을 몰래 잘랐다. 다윗은 자기가 사울의 겉옷자락만을 자른 것 뿐인데도 곧 양심에 가책을 받게 되었다.

He said to his men, "The LORD forbid that I should do such a thing to my master, the LORD's anointed, or lift my hand against him; for he is the anointed of the LORD." With these words David rebuked his men and did not allow them to attack Saul. And Saul left the cave and went his way. Then David went out of the cave and called out to Saul, "My lord the king!" When Saul looked behind him, David bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground. He said to Saul, "Why do you listen when men say, 'David is bent on harming you'? This day you have seen with your own eyes how the LORD delivered you into my hands in the cave. Some urged me to kill you, but I spared you; I said, 'I will not lift my hand against my master, because he is the LORD's anointed.' 그래서 다윗은 자기 부하들에게 타일렀다. "내가 감히 손을 들어, 주님께서 기름부어 세우신 우리의 임금님을 치겠느냐? 주님께서 내가 그런 일을 하지 못하도록 나를 막아 주시기를 바란다. 왕은 바로 주님께서 기름부어 세우신 분이기 때문이다." 다윗은 이런 말로 자기의 부하들을 타이르고, 그들이 일어나 사울을 치지 못하게 하였다. 마침내 사울이 일어나서 굴 속에서 나가 길을 걸어갔다. 다윗도 일어나 굴 속에서 밖으로 나가서, 사울의 뒤에다 대고 외쳤다. "임금님, 임금님!" 사울이 뒤를 돌아다보자, 다윗이 땅에 엎드려 절을 하였다. 그런 다음에, 다윗이 사울에게 말하였다. "임금님은 어찌하여, 다윗이 왕을 해치려 한다고 주장하는 사람들의 말만 들으십니까? 보십시오, 주님께서 오늘 저 굴 속에서 임금님을 나의 손에 넘겨 주셨다는 사실을, 이제 여기에서 직접 확인하실 수 있습니다. 임금님을 살려 보내지 말라고 말하는 사람도 있었지만, 나는 임금님을 아꼈습니다. 절대로, 손을 들어 우리의 임금님을 치지 않겠다고 다짐하였습니다. 임금님은 바로 주님께서 기름부어 세우신 분이기 때문입니다!

See, my father, look at this piece of your robe in my hand! I cut off the corner of your robe but did not kill you. Now understand and recognize that I am not guilty of wrongdoing or rebellion. I have not wronged you, but you are hunting me down to take my life. May the LORD judge between you and me. And may the LORD avenge the wrongs you have done to me, but my hand will not touch you. As the old saying goes, 'From evildoers come evil deeds,' so my hand will not touch you. "Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea? May the LORD be our judge and decide between us. May he consider my cause and uphold it; may he vindicate me by delivering me from your hand." 아버지, 지금 내가 들고 있는 임금님의 겉옷자락을 보십시오. 내가 이 겉옷자락만 자르고, 임금님께 손을 대지 않았습니다. 이것을 보시면, 나의 손에 악이나 죄가 없으며, 임금님께 반역하거나 잘못한 일이 없다는 것도 아실 것입니다. 그런데도 임금님은 나를 죽이려고, 찾아다니십니다. 이제는 주님께서, 나와 임금님 사이에서 재판관이 되시고, 나의 억울한 것을 주님께서 직접 풀어 주시기 바라겠습니다. 나의 손으로는 직접 임금님께 해를 끼치지 않겠습니다. 옛날 속담에 '악인에게서 악이 나온다' 하였으니, 나의 손으로는 임금님을 해치지 않겠습니다. 이스라엘의 임금님은 누구를 잡으려고 이렇게 나오셨습니까? 임금님이 누구를 잡으려고 쫓아다니십니까? 한 마리 죽은 개를 쫓아다니십니까? 한 마리 벼룩을 쫓아다니십니까? 그러므로 주님께서 재판관이 되셔서, 나와 임금님 사이를 판결하여 주시기를 빌겠습니다. 주님께서 굽어보시고 나의 억울함을 판결하여 주시며, 나를 임금님의 손에서 건져 주시기를 빌겠습니다."

When David finished saying this, Saul asked, "Is that your voice, David my son?" And he wept aloud. "You are more righteous than I," he said. "You have treated me well, but I have treated you badly. You have just now told me of the good you did to me; the LORD delivered me into your hands, but you did not kill me. When a man finds his enemy, does he let him get away unharmed? May the LORD reward you well for the way you treated me today. I know that you will surely be king and that the kingdom of Israel will be established in your hands. 다윗이 말을 끝마치자, 사울은 "나의 아들 다윗아, 이것이 정말 너의 목소리냐?" 하고 말하면서, 목놓아 울었다. 사울이 다윗에게 말하였다. "나는 너를 괴롭혔는데, 너는 내게 이렇게 잘 해주었으니, 네가 나보다 의로운 사람이다. 주님께서 나를 네 손에 넘겨 주셨으나, 너는 나를 죽이지 않았다. 이것 하나만으로도 오늘 너는, 네가 나를 얼마나 끔찍히 생각하는지를 내게 보여 주었다. 도대체 누가 자기의 원수를 붙잡고서도 무사히 제 길을 가도록 놓아 보내겠느냐? 네가 오늘 내게 이렇게 잘 해주었으니, 주님께서 너에게 선으로 갚아 주시기 바란다. 나도 분명히 안다. 너는 틀림없이 왕이 될 것이고, 이스라엘 나라가 네 손에서 굳게 설 것이다.

Now swear to me by the LORD that you will not cut off my descendants or wipe out my name from my father's family." So David gave his oath to Saul. Then Saul returned home, but David and his men went up to the stronghold. 그러므로 너는 이제 주님의 이름으로 내게 맹세하여라. 너는 내 자손을 멸절시키지도 않고, 내 이름을 내 아버지의 집안에서 지워 버리지도 않겠다고, 내게 맹세하여라." 다윗이 사울에게 그대로 맹세하였다. 사울은 자기의 왕궁으로 돌아갔고, 다윗과 그의 부하들은 산성으로 올라갔다.
