사무엘상 18장

 

After David had finished talking with Saul, Jonathan became one in spirit with David, and he loved him as himself. From that day Saul kept David with him and did not let him return to his father's house. And Jonathan made a covenant with David because he loved him as himself. Jonathan took off the robe he was wearing and gave it to David, along with his tunic, and even his sword, his bow and his belt. Whatever Saul sent him to do, David did it so successfully that Saul gave him a high rank in the army. This pleased all the people, and Saul's officers as well. 다윗이 사울과 이야기를 끝냈다. 그 뒤에 요나단은 다윗에게 마음이 끌려, 마치 제 목숨을 아끼듯 다윗을 아끼는 마음이 생겼다. 사울은 그 날로 다윗을 자기와 함께 머무르게 하고, 다시 아버지의 집으로 돌아가지 못하게 하였다. 요나단은 제 목숨을 아끼듯이 다윗을 아끼어, 그와 가까운 친구로 지내기로 굳게 언약을 맺고, 자기가 입고 있던 겉옷을 벗어서 다윗에게 주고, 칼과 활과 허리띠까지 모두 다윗에게 주었다. 다윗은, 사울이 어떤 임무를 주어서 보내든지, 맡은 일을 잘 해냈다. 그래서 사울은 다윗을 장군으로 임명하였다. 온 백성은 물론 사울의 신하들까지도 그 일을 마땅하게 여겼다.

When the men were returning home after David had killed the Philistine, the women came out from all the towns of Israel to meet King Saul with singing and dancing, with joyful songs and with tambourines and lutes. As they danced, they sang: "Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands." Saul was very angry; this refrain galled him. "They have credited David with tens of thousands," he thought, "but me with only thousands. What more can he get but the kingdom?" And from that time on Saul kept a jealous eye on David. The next day an evil spirit from God came forcefully upon Saul. He was prophesying in his house, while David was playing the harp, as he usually did. Saul had a spear in his hand 다윗이 블레셋 사람을 쳐죽이고 군인들과 함께 돌아올 때에, 이스라엘의 모든 성읍에서 여인들이 소구와 꽹과리를 들고 나와서, 노래하고 춤추고 환호성을 지르면서 사울 왕을 환영하였다. 이 때에 여인들이 춤을 추면서 노래를 불렀다. "사울은 수천 명을 죽이고, 다윗은 수만 명을 죽였다." 이 말에 사울은 몹시 언짢았다. 생각할수록 화가 치밀어올랐다. "사람들이 다윗에게는 수만 명을 돌리고, 나에게는 수천 명만을 돌렸으니, 이제 그에게 더 돌아갈 것은 이 왕의 자리밖에 없겠군!" 하고 투덜거렸다. 그 날부터 사울은 다윗을 시기하고 의심하기 시작하였다. 바로 그 다음날, 하나님이 보내신 악한 영이 사울에게 내리덮치자, 사울은 궁궐에서 미친 듯이 헛소리를 질렀다. 다윗은 여느날과 같이 수금을 탔다. 그 때에 사울은 창을 가지고 있었는데,

and he hurled it, saying to himself, "I'll pin David to the wall." But David eluded him twice. Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with David but had left Saul. So he sent David away from him and gave him command over a thousand men, and David led the troops in their campaigns. In everything he did he had great success, because the LORD was with him. When Saul saw how successful he was, he was afraid of him. 그가 갑자기 다윗을 벽에 박아 버리겠다고 하면서, 다윗에게 창을 던졌다. 다윗은 사울 앞에서 두 번이나 몸을 피하였다. 주님께서 자기를 떠나 다윗과 함께 계시는 것을 안 사울은, 다윗이 두려워졌다. 그리하여 사울은 다윗을 천부장으로 임명하여 자기 곁에서 떠나게 하였다. 다윗은 부대를 이끌고 출전하였다. 주님께서 그와 함께 계셨기 때문에, 어디를 가든지 그는 항상 이겼다. 다윗이 이렇게 큰 승리를 거두니, 사울은 그것을 보고, 다윗을 매우 두려워하였다.

But all Israel and Judah loved David, because he led them in their campaigns. Saul said to David, "Here is my older daughter Merab. I will give her to you in marriage; only serve me bravely and fight the battles of the LORD." For Saul said to himself, "I will not raise a hand against him. Let the Philistines do that!" But David said to Saul, "Who am I, and what is my family or my father's clan in Israel, that I should become the king's son-in-law?" So when the time came for Merab, Saul's daughter, to be given to David, she was given in marriage to Adriel of Meholah. Now Saul's daughter Michal was in love with David, and when they told Saul about it, he was pleased. 그러나 온 이스라엘과 유다는 다윗이 늘 앞장 서서 싸움터에 나가는 것을 보고, 모두 그를 좋아하였다. 사울은 （자기의 손으로 다윗을 직접 죽이지 않고, 블레셋 사람의 손에 죽게 하려고 마음먹고,） 다윗에게 말하였다. "내가 데리고 있는 나의 맏딸 메랍을 너의 아내로 줄 터이니, 너는 먼저, 주님께서 앞장 서서 싸우시는 '주님의 싸움'을 싸워서, 네가 정말 용사인 것을 나에게 보여라." 다윗이 사울에게 말하였다. "제가 누구이며, 제 혈통이나 제 아버지 집안이 이스라엘에서 무엇이기에, 제가 감히 임금님의 사위가 될 수 있겠습니까?" 하고 사양하였다. 그런데 사울은 딸 메랍을 다윗에게 주기로 하고서도, 정작 때가 되자 사울은 그의 딸을 므홀랏 사람 아드리엘과 결혼시키고 말았다. 사울의 딸 미갈이 다윗을 사랑하였다. 누군가가 이것을 사울에게 알리니, 사울은 잘 된 일이라고 여기고,

"I will give her to him," he thought, "so that she may be a snare to him and so that the hand of the Philistines may be against him." So Saul said to David, "Now you have a second opportunity to become my son-in-law." Then Saul ordered his attendants: "Speak to David privately and say, 'Look, the king is pleased with you, and his attendants all like you; now become his son-in-law.' " They repeated these words to David. But David said, "Do you think it is a small matter to become the king's son-in-law? I'm only a poor man and little known." When Saul's servants told him what David had said, Saul replied, "Say to David, 'The king wants no other price for the bride than a hundred Philistine foreskins, to take revenge on his enemies.' " Saul's plan was to have David fall by the hands of the Philistines. 그 딸을 다윗에게 주어서, 그 딸이 다윗에게 올무가 되게 하여, 그를 블레셋 사람의 손에 죽게 해야 하겠다고 혼자 생각하였다. 그래서 사울은 다윗에게, 다시 그를 사위로 삼겠다고 말하였다. 사울이 신하들에게 지시하였다. "당신들은 다윗에게 내가 다윗을 좋아한다고 말하시오. 그리고 당신들도 모두 다윗을 좋아한다고 말하시오. 이처럼 우리 모두가 다윗을 좋아하니, 임금의 사위가 되라고 슬쩍 말하시오." 사울의 신하들이 부탁받은 대로 그런 말을 다윗의 귀에 들어가게 하니, 다윗은 "나는 가난하고 천한 사람인데, 어떻게 내가 임금님의 사위가 될 수 있겠습니까? 그것이 그렇게 쉬운 일로 보입니까?" 하고 말하였다. 사울의 신하들은 다윗이 한 말을 사울에게 전하였다. 이 말을 들은 사울은 "당신들은 다윗에게 내가 결혼 선물로 아무것도 바라지 않으며, 다만 나의 원수 블레셋 남자의 포피 백 개를 가져와서 나의 원수를 갚아 주는 것만을 바라더라고 하시오" 하고 시켰다. （사울은 이렇게 하여, 다윗을 블레셋 사람의 손에 죽게 할 셈이었다.）

When the attendants told David these things, he was pleased to become the king's son-in-law. So before the allotted time elapsed, David and his men went out and killed two hundred Philistines. He brought their foreskins and presented the full number to the king so that he might become the king's son-in-law. Then Saul gave him his daughter Michal in marriage. When Saul realized that the LORD was with David and that his daughter Michal loved David, Saul became still more afraid of him, and he remained his enemy the rest of his days. The Philistine commanders continued to go out to battle, and as often as they did, David met with more success than the rest of Saul's officers, and his name became well known. 사울의 신하들이 이 말을 그대로 다윗에게 전하였다. 다윗은 왕의 사위가 되는 것도 좋겠다고 생각하였다. 그래서 결혼 날짜를 잡기도 전에, 왕의 사위가 되려고, 자기 부하들을 거느리고 출전하여, 블레셋 남자 이백 명을 쳐죽이고 그들의 포피를 가져다가, 요구한 수대로 왕에게 바쳤다. 사울은 자기의 딸 미갈을 그에게 아내로 주었다. 사울은 주님께서 다윗과 함께 계시다는 것을 알았고, 자기 딸 미갈마저도 다윗을 사랑하는 것을 보고서, 다윗을 더욱더 두려워하게 되어, 마침내 다윗과 평생 원수가 되었다. 그 무렵에 블레셋 지휘관들이 군대를 이끌고 침입해 와서 싸움을 걸곤 하였는데, 그 때마다 다윗이 사울의 장군들보다 더 큰 전과를 올렸기 때문에, 다윗은 아주 큰 명성을 얻었다.
