One day Jonathan son of Saul said to the young man bearing his armor, "Come, let's go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not tell his father. Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men, among whom was Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod's brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD's priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left. On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a cliff; one was called Bozez, and the other Seneh. One cliff stood to the north toward Micmash, the other to the south toward Geba. 하루는 사울의 아들 요나단이 자기의 무기를 든 젊은 병사에게 말하였다. Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, "Come, let's go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the LORD will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few." "Do all that you have in mind," his armor-bearer said. "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul." Jonathan said, "Come, then; we will cross over toward the men and let them see us. If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,' we will stay where we are and not go up to them. But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the LORD has given them into our hands." 요나단이 무기를 든 젊은 병사에게 말하였다. So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. "Look!" said the Philistines. "The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in." The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armor-bearer, "Come up to us and we'll teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armor-bearer, "Climb up after me; the LORD has given them into the hand of Israel." Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armor-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armor-bearer followed and killed behind him. In that first attack Jonathan and his armor-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre. Then panic struck the whole army--those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties--and the ground shook. Saul's lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army melting away in all directions. Then Saul said to the men who were with him, "Muster the forces and see who has left us." When they did, it was Jonathan and his armor-bearer who were not there. Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God." (At that time it was with the Israelites.) While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand." Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords. 베냐민 지역의 기브아에서 망을 보는 사울의 파수꾼들이 건너다 보니, 수많은 블레셋 군인들이 아우성을 치며 이리저리 몰려다니고 있었다. 그러자 사울이 자기와 함께 있는 군인들에게 명령하였다. "우리 가운데서 누가 빠져 나갔는지 조사하여 밝혀 내어라!" 사람들이 조사하여 보니, 요나단과 그의 무기를 드는 병사가 없었다. 그러자 사울은 아히야에게 하나님의 궤를 가지고 오라고 말하였다. 그 때에는 하나님의 궤가 이스라엘 자손과 함께 있었다. 사울이 제사장에게 말을 하고 있는 동안에, 블레셋 진영에서 일어난 아우성 소리가 점점 더 크게 들려왔다. 그래서 사울은 제사장에게 궤를 가지고 오지 말라고 하였다. 사울과 그를 따르는 온 백성이 함께 함성을 지르며 싸움터로 달려가 보니, 블레셋 군인들이 칼을 뽑아들고 저희끼리 서로 정신없이 쳐죽이고 있었다.

Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan. When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit. So the LORD rescued Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven. Now the men of Israel were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, "Cursed be any man who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the troops tasted food. The entire army entered the woods, and there was honey on the ground. 블레셋 사람들 편을 들어 싸움터에까지 나왔던 히브리 사람들도, 이제는 돌이켜서 사울과 요나단이 지휘하는 이스라엘 편이 되었다. 또 전에 에브라임 산간지방으로 들어가 숨었던 이스라엘 사람들도, 블레셋 사람들이 지고 달아난다는 소식을 듣고, 모두 뛰어나와 블레셋 군인들을 뒤쫓으며 싸웠다. 그 날 주님께서 이렇게 이스라엘을 구원하셨다. 전쟁은 벳아웬 너머에까지 번졌다. 그 날 이스라엘 사람들은 허기에 지쳐 있었다. 사울이 군인들에게 "내가 오늘 저녁에 적군에게 원수를 갚을 때까지, 아무것이라도 먹는 사람은 누구든지 저주를 받을 것이다" 하고 맹세시켰기 때문에, 군인들이 모두 아무것도 먹지 못하였다. 거기에 있던 모든 군인들이 숲으로 들어갔다. 들녘의 땅바닥에는 꿀이 있었다.

When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out, yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath. But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened. Then one of the soldiers told him, "Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, 'Cursed be any man who eats food today!' That is why the men are faint." Jonathan said, "My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey. How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?" 군인들이 숲에 이르러서 보니, 벌집에서 꿀이 흘러나오고 있었다. 군인들은 맹세한 것이 두려웠기 때문에 아무도 그것을 손가락으로 찍어다 입에 대지 않았다. 그러나 요나단은 자기의 아버지가 군인들에게 그런 맹세를 시킬 때에 듣지 못하였으므로, 손에 들고 있던 막대기를 내밀어 그 끝으로 벌집에 든 꿀을 찍어서 빨아먹었다. 그러자 그는 눈이 번쩍 뜨이고 생기가 넘쳤다. 그 때에 군인들 가운데 어떤 사람이 나서서, 그에게 알려 주었다. "임금님이 누구든지 오늘 무엇을 먹는 사람은 저주를 받을 것이라고 하시면서, 모든 군인들에게 철저히 금식하도록 맹세를 시키셨습니다. 그래서 군인들이 이렇게 지쳐 있습니다." 그러자 요나단이 탄식하였다. "나의 아버지께서 이 나라를 어렵게 만드셨구나. 생각하여 보아라. 이 꿀을 조금 찍어서 맛만 보았는데도 눈이 번쩍 뜨이고 생기가 넘치는데, 오늘 우리 군인들이 적에게서 빼앗은 것을 먹고 싶은 대로 먹었더라면, 얼마나 더 좋았겠느냐? 그랬더라면 블레셋 사람들을 더 많이 죽이지 않았겠느냐?"

That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Micmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted. They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them, together with the blood. Then someone said to Saul, "Look, the men are sinning against the LORD by eating meat that has blood in it." "You have broken faith," he said. "Roll a large stone over here at once." Then he said, "Go out among the men and tell them, 'Each of you bring me your cattle and sheep, and slaughter them here and eat them. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with blood still in it.' " So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there. Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had done this. 이스라엘 군인들은 바로 그 날, 믹마스에서 아얄론까지 쫓아가며 블레셋 사람들을 쳐죽였으므로 몹시 지쳐 있었다. 그래서 군인들은 약탈하여 온 것에 달려들어, 그 가운데서 양과 소와 송아지를 마구 끌어다가, 땅바닥에서 잡고, 피째로 고기를 먹었다. 사람들이 이 사실을 사울에게 알렸다. "보십시오, 백성들이 피째로 고기를 먹어, 주님께 죄를 지었습니다." 사울이 말하였다. "당신들은 하나님을 배신하였소! 큰 돌 하나를 여기 나 있는 곳으로 굴려 오시오!" 사울이 또 지시하였다. "당신들은 백성에게 두루 다니며 알리시오. 이제부터는 누구든지, 소나 양을 내게로 끌고 와서, 이 돌 위에서 잡아서 먹도록 하고, 고기를 피째로 먹어서 주님께 범죄하지 않도록 하라고 이르시오." 그 날 밤에 백성들은 제각기 자기들이 차지한 소를 끌어다가 거기에서 잡았다. 그리하여 사울이 주님께 제단을 하나 쌓았는데, 이것이 그가 주님께 쌓은 첫 제단이었다.

Saul said, "Let us go down after the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive." "Do whatever seems best to you," they replied. But the priest said, "Let us inquire of God here." So Saul asked God, "Shall I go down after the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel's hand?" But God did not answer him that day. Saul therefore said, "Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today. As surely as the LORD who rescues Israel lives, even if it lies with my son Jonathan, he must die." But not one of the men said a word. Saul then said to all the Israelites, "You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here." "Do what seems best to you," the men replied. 사울이 말하였다. "우리가 이 밤에 블레셋 군대를 쫓아 내려가서 동이 틀 때까지 그들을 약탈하고, 한 사람도 남김없이 모조리 죽이도록 합시다." 그들이 대답하였다. "임금님이 좋으시다면, 그대로 하시기 바랍니다." 그러자 제사장이 사울에게 말하였다. "우리가 먼저 하나님께 나아가 여쭈어 보아야 합니다." 그래서 사울이 하나님께 여쭈었다. "내가 블레셋 사람을 뒤쫓아 내려가도 되겠습니까? 주님께서 그들을 우리 이스라엘의 손에 넘겨 주시겠습니까?" 그러나 하나님은 그 날 사울에게 아무 대답도 하지 않으셨다. 그러자 사울이 이렇게 말하였다. "주님께서 우리에게 응답하지 않으시니, 군지휘관은 모두 앞으로 나오시오. 오늘 이 허물이 누구에게 있는지 알아보겠소. 이스라엘을 구원하신 주님의 살아 계심을 두고 맹세합니다. 허물이 나의 아들 요나단에게 있다고 하더라도, 그는 반드시 죽을 것입니다." 그러나 군인들 가운데 어느 한 사람도 감히 그에게 대답하는 사람이 없었다. 사울은 온 이스라엘 군인에게 계속해서 말하였다. "귀관들은 모두 이쪽에 서시오. 나와 나의 아들 요나단은 저쪽에 서겠소." 군인들이 모두 사울에게 "임금님이 좋으시다면 그대로 하시기 바랍니다" 하고 대답하였다.

Then Saul prayed to the LORD, the God of Israel, "Give me the right answer." And Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the men were cleared. Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son." And Jonathan was taken. Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathan told him, "I merely tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now must I die?" Saul said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan." But the men said to Saul, "Should Jonathan die--he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head will fall to the ground, for he did this today with God's help." So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death. 사울이 주 이스라엘의 하나님께 아뢰었다. "오늘 저에게 응답하지 않으시니, 웬일이십니까? 주 이스라엘의 하나님, 그 허물이 저에게나 저의 자식 요나단에게 있다면 우림이 나오게 하시고, 그 허물이 주님의 백성 이스라엘에게 있다면 둠밈이 나오게 하십시오." 그러자 요나단과 사울이 걸리고, 백성들의 혐의는 벗겨졌다. 사울이 말하였다. "제비를 뽑아서, 나와 나의 아들 요나단 가운데서 누가 죄인인지를 가려 내시오." 그러자 요나단이 걸렸다. 사울이 요나단에게 물었다. "네가 무슨 일을 하였는지 나에게 말하여라!" 요나단이 그에게 대답하였다. "손에 들고 있던 막대기 끝으로 꿀을 찍어서 조금 맛보았습니다. 죽을 각오를 하고 있습니다." 사울이 선언하였다. "요나단, 너는 죽음을 피할 수 없다. 내가 너를 처형하지 않는다면, 하나님이 나에게 천벌을 내리시고 또 내리실 것이다." 이 때에 온 백성이 사울에게 호소하였다. "이스라엘에게 이렇게 큰 승리를 안겨 준 요나단을 죽여서야 되겠습니까? 절대로 그럴 수는 없습니다! 주님께서 살아 계심을 걸고 맹세합니다. 그의 머리털 하나도 땅에 떨어져서는 안 됩니다. 그는 오늘 하나님과 함께 이 일을 이루어 놓은 사람이기 때문입니다." 백성들이 이렇게 요나단을 살려 내어, 그는 죽지 않았다.

Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land. After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them. He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had plundered them. Saul's sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal. His wife's name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul's army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul's uncle. 사울은 블레셋 사람을 더 이상 뒤쫓지 않고 돌아섰고, 블레셋 사람도 자기들의 본 고장으로 돌아갔다. 사울은 이스라엘을 다스릴 왕권을 얻은 다음부터, 사방에 있는 원수들과 전쟁을 하였다. 그는 모압과 암몬 자손과 에돔과 소바 왕들과 블레셋 사람들과 맞서 싸웠는데, 어느 쪽으로 가서 싸우든지 늘 이겼다. 그는 아말렉까지 쳐서 용맹을 떨쳤다. 이렇게 그는 침략자들에게서 이스라엘을 건져 내었다. 사울에게는, 요나단과 리스위와 말기수아라는 아들이 있었다. 딸도 둘이 있었는데, 큰 딸의 이름은 메랍이고 작은 딸의 이름은 미갈이다. 사울의 아내의 이름은 아히노암인데, 아히마아스의 딸이다. 사울의 군사령관은 아브넬인데, 사울의 숙부 넬의 아들이다.

Saul's father Kish and Abner's father Ner were sons of Abiel. All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service. 사울의 아버지는 기스요, 아브넬의 아버지는 넬인데, 둘 다 아비엘의 아들이다. 사울은 일생 동안 블레셋 사람과 치열하게 싸웠다. 그래서 사울은, 용감한 사람이나 힘 센 사람은, 눈에 보이는 대로 자기에게로 불러 들였다.
